It's Time to Jingle and Mingle at Umhlanga's Mega Festive Market! The Umhlanga Festive Market is getting ready to open to the public – and it's going to be a weekend to remember. The festive market is hosted by the Umhlanga Residents and Ratepayers Association (URRA), a non-profit organisation dedicated to making Umhlanga an amazing place to live, work, and play. From Friday, 13 December to Sunday, 15 December, the Umhlanga Spare Centre will transform into a winter wonderland, featuring more than 110 vendors selling everything from unique gifts to delicious treats. That's not all, though. This festive market will also include a milkshake festival for the kids (and let's be honest, the young at heart), and cheese and wine tastings for the grown-ups. In addition, there will be Christmas carols and performances by local musicians and dancers. The thrill of the game, the hard hits, the big plays, the rivalries—we wait all year for this. It's the heartbeat of fall.  But behind the touchdowns and tackles, there's a conversation we can't afford to ignore. As much as we love this sport, we can't turn a blind eye to the growing concerns around traumatic brain injuries—injuries that have changed the lives of countless players, from the pros to the youth leagues. In the first week of the new season, two young people, Caden Tellier, 16, of Selma, Alabama and Cohen Craddock, 13, of West Virginia, died of traumatic brain injuries. While we don't have all the details of their tragic injuries, it is a stark reminder of the risks players take when they step onto the field. In this episode, Your Doctor Friends dive into the other side of the excitement—the risks that come with those bone-crushing hits. We tackle topics such as whether the type of helmet matters, what those weird sponge-like helmet covers actually do and how tackle football compares to flag football (spoiler alert, this 2021 study by the CDC and published in Sports Health, found that youth tackle football players experienced FIFTEEN TIMES more head impacts than their youth flag football players).  We also give you tips on how to be mindful of signs of concussion or more serious brain injuries. Techstars Startup Weekends Techstars Startup Weekends, lasting 54 hours, offer unparalleled experiential education for both technical and non-technical entrepreneurs. From Friday night pitches to Sunday night demos, participants engage in brainstorming, business plan development, and prototype creation, all aimed at fostering action, innovation, and education. The overarching theme of the recent event has been the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Social Innovation. Now that a great weekend in sports is finally wrapped up join me as I break down the past 72 hours that was. From Friday's slate of games that saw teams from each conference of the NBA fighting for playoff seeding, to a great UFC 300 card, and of course, Sunday's NBA games that concluded the 2023-2024 regular season. The family and I spent our weekend in Sacramento attending the final two home games for the Kings and rode the rollercoaster of emotions that came with it, from blundering another huge lead on Friday night to dominance on Sunday afternoon. I'll tell you why our fate was sealed Thursday and where we stand now that the dust has settled. No matter who your favorite NBA team is "The Stage Is Set" for the play-in scenarios and soon the NBA Playoffs as a whole. The road near our house is under construction, causing traffic snarls for over a year, and completion this year is unlikely at the work rate seen this weekend. Two days are dead quiet on the construction site. From Friday night to Sunday night, workers do everything except build the new highway: family time, sports, and recreation. Why? Because road construction is a job. These people may be good, or even the best at what they do. But at the end of the day, making a road is just a job that doesn't call you when the road develops a pothole. Veterinary medicine is a calling, a passion, that drives people to do extraordinary things, such as commit to healing animals at any moment, despite the personal cost. Today, however, veterinary medical organizations are spending a lot of time working to change the profession to meet the perceived needs of veterinarians. Ignored are the animals and their owners. I discuss in this podcast rather than adjusting to the social norms and a balance of work and life goals, vet schools and professional organizations should focus on returning to the passion of helping horses and their owners. The obstacles to returning to passionate care seem insurmountable: debt, low pay, and the social perception of family over job. And to this last thought, family always trumps job. But is being a veterinarian a job? Only if horses are robots. Being a vet, especially a horse vet, is a calling that is not for everyone and does not fit the standard social patterns of today. It is similar to deciding to have a child or committing to a relationship; it is a commitment to passion, and there are no days off. I finally offer the only solution - Enjoy every moment with every horse and accept the challenges and hardships, as nothing is better than helping horses (and their owners) thrive in a human world. If you are faithful to your calling, your friends and family will understand, but never forget them and deliver to them your all when you can. You will always satisfy your family if you remain passionate about giving to others.

It's one of the jewels in Auckland's crown, but for the past four months only locals have been able to visit the black sand surf Mecca of Muriwai. From Friday, that's finally going to change. Auckland Council announced this afternoon that the cordon on the corner of Waitea and Oaia roads will be lifted at 6am Friday. Cordons will remain in place on Domain Crescent and Motutara Rd, and most of the walking tracks will still be off-limits, but visitors will be able head to the local businesses and of course to visit the famous beach. Wisconsin is one of those places that lives in the imaginations of Americans largely in the form of caricature. Full of cheese curd eating, beer loving, Harley riders, the state rarely gets the respect it deserves. In reality, Wisconsin is all of those things and so much more. I grew up 90 minutes south of Milwaukee but it might as well have been a totally different country. Chicago is Midwestern in the way that non-alcoholic beer is beer, in name only.  Wisconsin, on the other hand, is pure Midwest. From Friday night fish frys to the homey environs of supper clubs and a relatively laid back sense of community and good spiritedness, Wisconsin is the heart of the Midwest for me.So today I'm excited that in the latest episode of Beer Travelers we're making our way to one of the great overlooked gems in the American craft beer scene: Milwaukee, Wisconsin.To help lead us through this town's glorious and storied beer scene we have two fantastic local guides. Chris Drosner is a long-time beer writer and editor covering Wisconsin and Milwaukee specifically. He's written the Beer Baron column for the Wisconsin State Journal, the daily newspaper in the capital city of Madison. And it's through this column that I first got to know Chris and his take on the Madtown and greater Wisconsin beer scenes. More recently, Chris moved to Milwaukee, where he is now the executive editor of Milwaukee Magazine. Joining Chris to help us on our tour of Brew City this week is Bobby Tanzillo, the senior editor at OnMilwaukee.com, where he writes about beer, whiskey, history, and architecture. He's the author of a half dozen history books, including several about beer and its history in Milwaukee.
