In this episode of The Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast, I'm joined by the incredible Kelly de Geus: an amazing horsewoman known for her ability to train horses the piaffe in a light, soft, willing, biomechanically correct way. Kelly de Geus is a dedicated horse trainer and coach from the Netherlands, who has been captivated by horses for as long as she can remember. For over a decade, Kelly's main focus has been on training horses herself, developing a specialty in teaching horses to piaffe and passage in hand. This is always a result of optimal communication and body use, and never a quick fix or trick. Having trained over 1000 horses in hand, Kelly now primarily focuses on sharing the knowledge she gained by doing so, thereby helping more people (and, in turn, more horses) feel better, improve posture and optimise performance. I first reached out to Kelly for online lessons years ago after being mesmerised by how light and happy her horses looked in the piaffe. At the time, she didn't have online resources, but she agreed to help me through online lessons and I was blown away by her approach. She taught me that that piaffe is reflection of correct basics, and that there are a sequence of things that need to be in place before the piaffe is possible. Her values in training horses align closely to my own so I am so happy to share her voice with the horse world. In this episode, we cover: ✨ The true purpose of piaffe as a diagnostic and gymnastic exercise (it's more than just fancy footwork and it's not a ‘circus trick'!) ✨The importance of conncection, communication, & biomechanics ✨ Common mistakes & how to know if your horse is ready to start training the piaffe ✨ The groundwork that sets the foundation for collection ✨ Adjusting her training approach to different horses ✨The role of positive reinforcement in her training ✨Plus so much more! If you've ever dreamed of training the piaffe, this is THE episode for you!

Isabell talks about the training and movements appropriate for a young horse headed for Grand Prix. She explains that riders should look for a horse with three good gaits and no weaknesses in those gaits. They must have a good mind, a willingness to work, elasticity and freedom in the shoulder. With this horse, they start in walk, and she asks the rider to help the horse maintain the rhythm of the walk even through the corners. As they move to the trot, Isabell points out that swing is needed, and that each horse will need to be worked according to their age and level.Members of Dressage Today OnDemand can watch the full video here:https://ondemand.dressagetoday.com/programs/werth-2017-world-cup-dressage-showcaseTo watch more with Werth and many other respected professionals, sign up for a free 10-day trial with subscription. This episode of RIDE WITH JANICE takes on a slightly different style. We're calling it INTERVIEWS WITH JANICE. Meet Alejandro Salazar from Florida. Alejandro is an FEI jumping and dressage rider and USDF Gold medalist specializing in the training and instruction of hunter, jumper and dressage horses and riders in the Gainesville/Ocala. He is available for clinics anywhere in the US and Latin America. He is the first trainer in the United States to be certified as a trainer by both USDF up to 4th level and USHJA and has ridden as an international competitor in both Grand Prix Dressage and Grand Prix jumpers throughout his riding career. Alejandro's passion for horses and riding began when he was a young boy in his homeland of Costa Rica. Now as a professional trainer and competitor, his enthusiasm, expertise and dedication to the sport he loves is demonstrated in all aspects of his programs -- from elevating the abilities and performance of seasoned competitors to starting the young horse under saddle. Janice Dulak met Alejandro through, of course, horses... After considering selling NOVI (one of Janice's horses) to a friend, Alejandro came to ride Novi and check out his suitability. It was after watching him ride Novi, that Janice decided to keep him AND Alejandro! After her first lesson she knew Alejandro had a like-minded approach to horses and teaching... "It was magic. I loved the simplicity of his teaching. It was all about what I teach! Basics!" Ever since, Alejandro has come to help out with riding and training all of Janice's horses... This interview was recorded in 2011 when Sheila Wilcox was in the early stages of Alzheimer's and confined to a home in Oxfordshire, England where she was to stay until her death on June 9, 2017. Sheila Wilcox was born on March the 12th, 1936 in Sutton Coalfield near Birmingham in England. Despite not being born into an equestrian family she persisted from an early age with a determination that was to become the driving force of her success. She embarked on her riding career at the age of four with half crown spent four pony rides on the beach near Blackpool. And despite the shortages of war convinced her parents that she was treading a path to her future that shaped the sport of eventing for the inclusion of women in the Olympics success in the show ring began with winning the champion hack title in 1953 at White City. But it was a visit to the European Championships with her brother John a year later that convinced her that her future lie in eventing and that consistency at the top level was attributed to fitness and conditioning a trademark which she was to make her very own. By 1956 she had caught the British team selectors eye with the partnership she had established with High and Mighty. However because women were not allowed in the Olympic Games High and Mighty were sold to become available for the Stockholm Games. But unsoundness denied him a place on the team and Sheila brought him back. Her record of three consecutive wins at Badminton Horse Trials is unsurpassed following her debut there in 1956 with High and Mighty where they finished runner up. They went on to take this prestigious four star title in 1957 and 1958. Sheila returned to take her third title a year later with Airs and Graces. She also won Little Badminton in 1964 riding Glenmore. Sheila competed in the 1957 European Championships with High and Mighty earning both team and individual gold medals. Two years later they also won a European team gold medal. Sheila competed successfully for several years winning eight major titles. However a fall in 1971 at the Tidworth Horse Trials left her partially paralyzed and she gave up eventing to focus on Grand Prix Dressage with success on Sun and Air in the mid 1970s. She took on the job of coach to the Canadian team leading up to the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games and including the 1975 Pan American Games. Sheila is the author of two books three days running published in 1958 was the first title ever written on the sport of eventing. The Event Horse was published in 1973 became a definitive work on the preparation and competing of the event horse. Sheila is divorced and has one son. Portrait of a Legend celebrates the lives of elite sportswomen who have become icons while impacting other areas of women in sport. In this archived interview that was recorded in 2011, Chris Stafford talks to British Sheila Willcox who was a pioneer in the sport of Eventing. She became the first woman to achieve international success paving the way for women to be included in the Olympic Games. Her foundations in the Pony Club and the show ring launched a career which proved that men and women can compete on equal terms. She holds the record at Badminton Horse Trials for three consecutive wins from 1957-9. Sheila added individual and team European Championship titles to her record before a devastating fall resulting in a broken back changed the course of her career. She went on to focus on Grand Prix Dressage and later became coach to the Canadian Eventing Team leading up to the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. This is a story of determination and the will to overcome personal and professional adversity. Visit us online at www.wispsports.com and follow us @WiSP Sports.
