Cardone discusses her journey as a former college athlete and first-generation college graduate, including her start in Little League baseball! She has led the CCCAA through the unique challenges of the pandemic and she is currently expanding the organization to better serve the field, as well as gearing up for the exciting celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Title IX

This week on the ABCA Podcast we check in with ABCA/ATEC Pacific Association Regional Coach of the Year, Riverside CC head coach, Rudy Arguelles. Riverside CC is now in elite company having won their 5th CCCAA championship. Arguelles has been a part of all 5 championships as either a player, assistant or head coach. This year’s state championship moves Riverside into 3rd place and one win away from 2ndplace for California state championships. I had a chance to meet Coach Arguelles in Folsom, CA in May. I was extremely impressed with how he and the Riverside program carried themselves. Riverside plays with a team first mentality on both sides of the baseball. They had a .420 team on base percentage and 88 hit by pitches. Their pitching staff had over 8 strikeouts per 9 innings and they fielded .970. This is a heartfelt listen from two people who are passionate about the game of baseball. We are kindred spirits because we both wear are emotions on our sleeves. Brandy Huffhines had a decorated High School academic and athletic career.  During her basketball playing tenure at Rio Linda High School in California, she was a 3-time TCC Champion, 3-time all-conference player, and the TCC conference MVP her senior year in 2017.  Her team was the Division 3 San Joaquin Section champion in 2016. She was nominated as a Max Preps all-state player in 2017, Character Combine female athlete of the year in 2017, and Sac Bee all-metro in 2016 and 2017.  She is Rio Linda High School's all-time leading scorer and all-time assist record holder.  She was Rio Linda's high school Valedictorian graduating with a 4.3 GPA.She started her collegiate playing career at Sacramento City College and her accolades kept coming.  She earned Big 8 all-conference honors and was selected to the CCCAA all-state team.  In her sophomore season at Sac City she led her team to one of the best seasons in school history with one win away from attending the Elite 8 tournament.  She finished her career with the infamous stat trio of shooting 50% from the field, 40% from the 3pt line, and 80% from the FT line.   She was selected as Sacramento City College's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2019 and the CCCAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2019.  She graduated from Sacramento City College after 2 years with a 4.0 GPA and signed a full Division I basketball scholarship to Cal State University of Northridge where she will continue her playing career.She spends some time with us and giving us her insight on what it actually takes to push through barriers, go against the grain when many people in her life were telling her she wouldn't make it. But most importantly she shares how a student-athlete can keep things in perspective, be a leader both on and off the court and how she learned her incredible work ethic which drove her to her success. 

You probably are not a big junior college football fanatic if you are reading this.  Well, you might be given eTeamSponsor's partnership with the NJCAA and the CCCAA.  But most of you are probably not.  However, I would take a bet that many of you watch Netflix at least a few times a week, if not every night. If you are a sports fan, you've most likely seen Last Chance U come across the screen as a trending or recommended show.  I certainly did a few years back and became glued to the drama, heartbreak, and hope that the show offers. East Mississippi HC, Buddy Stephens will tell you he is not perfect.  The show's portrayal at times is so raw and tough to watch and doesn't always cast the multi-national champion coach in the best light. We first met at the 2018 NJCAA National Championship game at Pittsburg State University where the Lions and Coach Stephens went on to win their 5th title in the last 9 years. What I experienced at that week's festivities and witnessed during the game was a coach who was as a raw and as honest as he was on the show.  With no editing rights, the gentle, and tough love was shown for all the audience to see.

The Santiago Canyon basketball team had their season cut short and were one of the top-seeded teams in Southern California to win the state title. From their season ending abruptly, to their state tournament getting cancelled, Aj discusses how their team is moving forward during this pandemic.
