Welcome everyone to another episode featuring the "Man of the Hour" and arguably the most comedic Head Coach in the history of rowing, Mr. Chris Clark, Director of Rowing at the University of Wisconsin. The former Head Coach of the Badgers Men's Rowing Team, Clark cemented himself as a legend in the rowing world. His overall demeanor, way of communicating and being to the point, is unlike any other. This man has absolutely no fear. A man of dignity, Coach Clark emphasizes the importance of team culture, the brute force of power needed to propel a rowing shell, and laying down the basics to affirm success on the water, as he once learned as a walk-on for the Pirates at Orange Coast College. OCC, most commonly known as Coast, a two-year junior college in sunny Costa Mesa, California, the men of OCC train down in Newport Beach, where Clark first took his rows as a young man, advancing himself to row for a year at Stanford Men's Rowing, then transferring across the way to the University of California, Berkeley where he completed his collegiate rowing career. Eventually rowing for the United States National Team, Clark knew that somehow along the lines he was meant to coach rowing, leading him to coach at the US Naval Academy, and then entering the doors of Porter Boathouse, calling it home since then. This podcast is one for the books, not only was it filmed in Coach Clark's legendary "mobile office" away from the wife and kids, and the boathouse entirely... it was on the side of the road, as he believed has better internet connection. We discuss the state of the recent World Championships in Belgrade, influence of Steve Gladstone, coaching Beau Hoopman, coxswains on the team, the walk-on culture at Wisco, becoming the new Director of Wisconsin Rowing from being the former Head Coach of the Men's Rowing team for many years, answering the posted "Q&A's", how to establish a team that is fully invested with one sole purpose, along with more topics. Stay tuned, sit back, and listen to intelligence. Welcome everyone to another episode of the For Stars Podcast, where today we hear from Southern California rower, 10-Time US National Team Member, and well-known sports filmmaker, Nick Trojan. We talk about his impact on Long Beach Junior Crew, the United States National Team, rowing at seven World Championships, and even spending a year rowing with Orange Coast College (the only junior college in America to have a competitive rowing team). Nick has always loved visual arts, even dating back to high school, so when he decided to take sports filmmaking to the next level, passion took over... and now paving the way for making rowing and the people involved more visible to the world. He currently has three documentaries available to the public featuring teams such as Harvard & Yale Heavies, as well as Cal Men's Rowing, with more in the books! Some of the documentaries he was working on, would have had an average joe quit and move on to something else, but Nick stuck with it and kept chasing his goal to put out superior work. The lessons that Nick learned at Long Beach Junior Crew was monumental, and in his words, "saved his life"... being taught foundations such as structure, commitment, and setting standards for himself in order to be elite. Rowing lightweight in high school and on the US National Team, Nick dabbled rowing heavyweight when it was available to him. We talk about the absence of lightweight rowing, meaning behind his nickname, living with host families, rowing at OCC instead of a four-year university, the simplicity of rowing, along with other subjects and future projects, so tune into this "Bucket of Bliss"!Be sure to follow him and check out his work!Instagram: https://instagram.com/sneeky_____YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@sneeky_Fit, Healthy & Happy Podcast Welcome to the Fit, Healthy and Happy Podcast hosted by Josh and Kyle from Colossus...Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifyXeno Müller - Elite Rowing Coach Make your rowing dreams real! Sam Herr & Julie Kibuishi met at Orange Coast College & became good friends. What's the surest way to initiate a heated argument between admissions professionals that boils over? Take a strong position on the use of test scores in college admissions. So that's what we're going to do - specifically, focus on the future of test scores. As always, we have two great guests to provide insights. Perry Robinson, Happily Retired School Counselor, and Vice President for Enrollment, and President of Wisconsin ACAC, talks about the history of the test-optional movement, weights test-optional and test-blind policies, and discusses how families are reacting to these changes. Kristoffer Toribio, Manager of International Admissions at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California, and President of International ACAC, weighs in on the international perspective, the right of passage the tests have become, and the role of tests in the rising direct admissions options. Any conversation about standardized tests with admissions professionals is interesting, so we hope you enjoy listening to these discussions as much as we enjoyed having them. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/adlunchcast/message

It's been over two years since a helicopter crash claimed the lives of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, three members of the Altobelli family and four others. Alyssa Altobelli was a teammate of Gianna's, and she was accompanied by her parents John and Keri. As it turns out, John was a legendary figure in his own right as the head baseball coach of Orange Coast College, a junior college in Orange County. In his 27 years at the helm of the program, John won over 700 games and four state championships. ESPN's Chris Connelly explains the mutual respect John and Kobe had for each other, and just how big of an impact John had on his team…and in his community. Learn more about your ad choices. (Photography by Tom Bonner, courtesy of Aquarium of the Pacific.) "We know what to do," says Aquarium of the Pacific President and CEO Dr. Peter Kareiva. He's talking about the ways communities can collaborate on combating climate change. And those activities will be the focus of a brand-new course which the Aquarium is offering, this autumn, in partnership with Orange Coast College. Entitled "Ocean Conservation and Community Science", the course is geared towards high-school students. Class sessions will happen at the Aquarium, two nights a week, starting August 30th, according to the Aquarium's website. The course is free to high-school students, who will receive three units of college credit. Labs and optional field trips will accompany the class sessions. A mission beyond the classroom (Photograph by Cassandra Davis, courtesy of Aquarium of the Pacific.) More importantly, though, the curriculum will provide discourse with conservation specialists and hands-on activities. The goals: to reach students who might otherwise not have the opportunity to discover their own personal connections with nature--and to give back to the community. That "giving back" element comes with encouraging the students to continue to act on that connection, long after the final class session has concluded. In fact, Dr. Kareiva, who will be the lead instructor, says the new course may very well open the door to careers which students hadn't previously considered. Dr. Kareiva and a number of conservationists will be sharing both their expertise. and the ways in which their talents led to their current career path. And these will be two-way conversations, with students encouraged to share their ideas and get involved in labs and hands-on activities. (Photograph by Eileen Delrosario, courtesy of Aquarium of the Pacific.) Arts-oriented students, especially, may be surprised to discover the ways their talents could fit into a science career with a focus on conservation. "I think everybody's a conservationist at heart," Dr. Kareiva explains. ("No one wants to destroy the planet.") While the course is currently full, Dr. Kareiva says there is a wait list available. In addition, his vision is an expansion of this class, to include other communities and universities, in the future. Dr. Kareiva offered a preview of the new course. discussed the Aquarium's conservation activities, and shared his perspectives on taking action to heal the environment. On this edition of Over Coffee® we cover: How Dr. Kareiva became inspired to focus his talents as a scientist on conservation; The goals of the new course and how it differs from a traditional "class"; What students will experience in "Ocean Conservation and Community Science"; Why "community conservation" is effective; The real-world interactive experiences available to students; How to get on the waitlist; How Dr. Kareiva has observed young Aquarium visitors connecting with nature; The ways in which we engage with conservation in a personal way; How programs like the new class can inspire youth to explore science careers that might otherwise have never occurred to them as possibilities; The roles arts-oriented students might want to consider in future conservation-oriented careers; How the new course reflects the ways in which the education field is evolving; Dr. Kareiva's future vision for the course; Our best chance at addressing the problems of climate change; How youth volunteers are applying their talents to conservation efforts; How an early study illustrated the power of effective communication in educating the public about climate change.
