We may experience life in the eternal present, but history rides along with us. And the history inside our classrooms this semester at American River College was suddenly and without warning upended by the history under our feet: our primary classroom building, Davies Hall, was shuttered upon being declared a seismic risk. As mismanagement and managerial hubris combine to drive us deeper into an unthinkable administrative boondoggle, we once again pause to take ground readings, and assess the risks of collapse in the histories so often told. Concerned for the well-being of our students, we have declared several of these stories to be seismically unfit. From Davies Hall to the Haitian Revolution, and the great universe of storytelling beyond, join us for another rambunctious episode of History Against the Grain.
In The Heart of It All (Melville House, 2023), Christian Kiefer imagines a group of factory workers and their families living in a once vibrant Ohio town during the Trump era. The factory is the only place to work outside of Walmart, the grocery store, or a fast-food chain, and it's owned by Mr. Marwat, a Pakistani man whose wife helps in the office, while their teenagers embrace American life. The family is upended when Mr. Marwat's parents move in. The factory foreman, Tom Bailey, and his family's lives are upended when their sick baby dies. Their daughter Janey's life is upended when she befriends the only Black young man in the town. Mr. Marwat's secretary Mary Lou's life is upended when her mother moves into a nursing home and dies. All of their struggles are exacerbated by small injustices but eased by small kindnesses in this sweet and thoughtful glimpse into the lives of people just trying to get by. CHRISTIAN KIEFER's novels have appeared on best of the year lists from Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, and Booklist and have received rave reviews in The Washington Post, Oprah.com, the San Francisco Chronicle, Brooklyn Rain, Library Journal, Huffington Post, and elsewhere. He is the author of the novels The Infinite Tides, The Animals, Phantoms, and the novella One Day Soon Time Will Have No Place Left to Hide. Christian is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize for his short fiction and has enjoyed a long second career in music, under the auspices of which he has collaborated with members of Smog, Pedro the Lion, DNA, 7 Seconds, John Zorn's Naked City, Sun Kil Moon, Boxhead Ensemble, Califone, Cake, Kronos Quartet, Wilco, Low, Fun, Anathallo, and The Band, among many others. He holds a Ph.D. in American literature from the University of California at Davis and has served as contributing editor for Zyzzyva, fiction reader for VQR, and as the West Coast editor for The Paris Review. He teaches at American River College in Sacramento and is the Director of the Ashland University MFA. G.P. I'm Here for the Bath by P.E. RolitaI'm Here for the Bath was a labor of love for me to write. In the sixty plus short stories that I put together for you I shared not only the experiences of the people I served and their caregivers but my own as well. My life unfolded during the thirty plus years I cared for the dying and supported the people around them. My work as a hospice aide molded me, shaped me and guided me in ways I could not have imagined. I honor the people I cared for and the people I worked with in these pages. I have not seen another book written in this way by a caregiver like me. EnjoyPeter Rolita was introduced to the teachings of Ernest Holmes and Louise Hay when he had the honor of caring for a Religious Science Certified Practitioner and her husband before they made their transitions . Peter began attending services at Foothill Center for Spiritual living in Auburn California and in July of 2017 completed his studies and was himself licensed as a RScP, Peter has worked in healthcare for over 30 years and has certifications in the state of California as a CNA, CHHA and has a LVN license as well.Peter considers himself a caregiver and has embraced opportunities to be at the bedside in a variety of private homes, hospitals and nursing homes. Peter has been employed as a hospice aide at Kaiser Permanente for over 20 years most recently working out of their Roseville branch. Peter completed his Associate Degree from American River College in 1997 and also earned a certificate of completion from their Gerontology program. Peter is a member of LGBTQ community and has served his community volunteering as a board member for a variety of organizations including; Foothill Center for Spiritual living, Servant Hearts, and Prime Timers.Peter currently shares a home in Carmichael California with his life long friend Emma Blake who chose the illustrations for "I'm Here for the Bath". Being in nature can have a powerful effect on our body and mind. It's like a tonic for our well-being. Research has found that it reduces blood pressure, stabilizes our heart rate, and decreases the production of stress hormones. In this week's episode, both our storytellers discover just how therapeutic nature can be. Part 1: Geography and Environmental Sciences Professor John Aubert is having a hard time connecting to his now teenage daughter. Part 2: Sarah Luchini may be in over her head, literally, as she tries to cross a river while hiking on the Appalachian Trail. John Aubert is a Professor of Geography and Environmental Sciences at American River College in Sacramento, CA. After realizing that his family and friends were finally getting tired of hearing his stories, he was ecstatic to discover that he could tell them to strangers! He has taken the stage at numerous Moth Story Slams and has been a featured storyteller for Capital Storytelling, Story Collider, Six Feet Apart Productions, and Artists Standing Strong Together. In addition to storytelling, John's other interests include movies, hiking, fly fishing, and volunteering in his community. Sarah Luchini is Marketing Specialist at Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park. She is responsible for coordinating the Institute's internal and external marketing efforts to grow awareness and engagement, as well as developing and implementing marketing plans in support of the organization's mission to inspire science, learning, and community for a changing world. Prior to joining Schoodic Institute, Luchini worked as Lead Graphic Designer at Downeast Graphics & Printing, a print and graphics studio where she worked seamlessly in print and web-based design. Luchini holds a Bachelors of Fine Art degree from Lesley University College of Art & Design, with a background in fine art and art history. Her work has been shown in exhibitions throughout Maine, Boston, and Florence, Italy, and she has worked in art galleries in Massachusetts and along the Maine coast. Rona brain be damned we had a fun episode tonight chatting it out with @travis_cannady the creator of @betteroffzine and all-around film wizard. He shared how he got started with film and his experiences being a living dip dunk machine processing films for lots of folks in Northern California. We got into aspects of social media, what's been going on with Instagram, and some thoughts around the up-and-coming Grainery app. He also got into his zine making, some of the projects and challenges he has had in the wild world of zines. He has a few projects coming out so make sure to check out the links in his bio to stay abreast of things.“Travis Cannady is a photographer born and raised in Sacramento, California. He studied Fine Arts at American River College from 2012 - 2017. This is where he found his love and appreciation for film photography while working in the darkroom. While not limiting himself to any one genre of photography, the current focus of his work is on documenting the mundane of everyday life. Other than photography, Travis has found a passion for zines. That includes collecting them from other photographers and making zines of his own work. Also at the beginning of 2021, Travis wanted to share this passion for zine making by starting a new film photography publication in a printed format called Better Off Zine. These zines feature work from a different photographer in each issue with the goal of giving an opportunity for photographers in this ever-growing film community to share their work and to make it accessible to as many people as possible.”Follow Travis at https://www.instagram.com/travis_cannady/Check out Better of Zine https://www.instagram.com/betteroffzine/Photography Chat is a weekly Instagram Live @merlindb hosts every Thursday at 5pmPST/8pmESTGive me a follow if you want to see the episodes live https://www.instagram.com/merlindb/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/photographychat/donations

In this special Father's Day episode, LDF host Dan Wotherspoon interviews his dad, Jim. James Richard Wotherspoon has lived a remarkable life. Born blind (as was his brother, Robert), Jim has achieved quite a lot in his 87-plus years. He became one of the first (if not the first) blind person to earn the rank of Eagle scout. He and his brother both mainstreamed at Berkeley High School, where he excelled in his courses, as well as music and chess. He then attended the University of California at Berkeley where he earned his doctorate in history (as well as met his wife, Beverly, and started a family). They then all moved to Sacramento, California, where he taught history at American River College for 43 years. In addition to his life triumphs, he faced many setbacks as well, including a heartbreaking divorce and reactions from church leaders, ultimately staying away from activity for 35 years. He is fully back and involved now, and most impressive of all is his attitude and the spirit of grace and forgiveness that radiate from him. You'll be glad you listened in!
Books, death, food, quaranTINIES, coming out, living your authentic life, Maya Angelou, buying lamps, Attitus Fitch, meeting your soul mate later in life, gay weddings, work-life balance, cheese drawers, being a great dad, the 80s, and getting your first born married. What a ride this episode is, as well as Brian's life. Brian is a dear friend of mine and has always been. Or at least as long as we can remember anyway. He and his late wife were always great hosts and I have fond memories of scooting around San Francisco with them and man could Diane drive a stick in that hilly city! I've yet to meet his husband, but it is something to look forward to, with cheese, of course. Brian is one of the most wise people I know. Brian Knirk had a career running restaurants in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1990's. The birth of his children changed his priorities and searching for work/life balance began teaching. Brian is department chair for Culinary Arts & Hospitality Management at American River College in Sacramento. In 2013, after the unexpected death of his wife and with two kids in high school, Brian began deep self-reflection that led to living authentically. Brian believes that if you listen and allow it, the universe will guide you. The result has been a joyful journey. And he's another Doctor, PhD, but doesn't talk about that much. In this episode, we talk about dropping out of school, what it takes to style a person, and working with bigger brands for the first time. Hey guys, it's Uli, welcome to the Full Circle Show Josh is a personal stylist who wants to make you look good. He first started Styling in July 2018 attending American River College while working at Taco Bell. Wanting to keep himself busy before school and work, he would style his friends and family asking for little to no compensation. A year into styling, he caught his first big break when asked by Ulises to help style 8 models for a Fashion Show. The rest was history. After receiving a certification in Fashion Retail and spending 1 semester at Sacramento State, he knew school wasn’t for him. Saying goodbye to what he hopes was his last time attending school, Josh knew he wanted to focus just on styling. After completing his largest photoshoot under Bearpaw, he plans on doing more commercial work and styling business people Connect with Josh: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jfpersonalstyling/ If you want to connect with us: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fullcircleshow/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5s1V7qNaLx-ojxOMrQO7bw --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thefullcircleshow/support

Journalists and V:RC contributors Kris Hooks and Luis Gael Jimenez join Anthony to talk about American River College's scare over a reported gunman on campus, the rise of Sacramento MMA fighter Josh Emmett and Sacramento State graduate Ryan Coogler's major blockbuster Black Panther. Luis and Kris also spend a significant amount of time trying to dunk on Anthony's Magic: The Gathering habit, but his taste is immaculate, so nothing sticks. Music provided by Little Tents, a great Sacramento band that is, unfortunately, no more. But you can still give them money! Check out their album, it rules.
