This week, when we return to our normal format we are joined by Community Pharmacist Dr Berwyn Owen. Berwyn is a pharmacy proprietor and prescriber in North Wales. Formerly a Chief Pharmacist and a member of the General Pharmaceutical Council he is well placed to discuss what the future of medicines management looks like through the lens of community pharmacy.  Drawing on his wide ranging experience which includes stints in pharmaceutical research and as Programme Director for the Medicines Management programme for the NHS, we explore how the NHS is going to cope with the growing burden of chronic disease, and how pharmacies at the heart of communities could develop to provide so much more care. This is a joyous meander through Berwyn's career and his own plans for the creation of a healthcare hub at the heart of his village in Penygroes. “You've lifted this town” is how one of his patients described the effect the developments are having.Steve is away this week and so we are joined by the Fourth Apothecary, Clare Howard. Dubbed the superbug pandemic, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been recognised by the World Health Organization as one of the top 10 public health threats facing humanity. Effective antibiotics underpin modern medicine and yet, it takes just two to three years for new antimicrobial medicines to become ineffective against superbugs. Worryingly, the innovation pipeline for new antibiotics is stagnating. An estimated 10 million people globally will die each year by 2050 from infections that can be readily treated today. To mark this year's World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, MTPConnect and its Australian Antimicrobial Resistance Network (AAMRNet), has launched the second of its Fighting Superbugs reports, Fighting Superbugs: Ensuring Australia is Ready to Combat the Rise of Drug Resistant Infections, prepared in response to the Australian Parliament's report, The New Frontier – Delivering better health for all Australians. The independent report developed by Evohealth presents nine recommendations, urging immediate action to enhance the availability of new antibiotics and equip the Australian healthcare system to fight the superbug pandemic. Hosts Caroline Duell and MTPConnect's Andrew Bowskill co-chair of the AAMRNet discuss AMR with two of the reports' authors - Former Chair of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee Emeritus Professor Lloyd Sansom, a renowned pharmacy academic, policy advisor and researcher and Renae Beardmore, Founder and Managing Director of specialist health advisory firm Evohealth and former Chief Pharmacist for the ACT. On this episode Steve shares with us why pediatrics is such an exciting field to work in, including the challenges, the opportunities, and the sheer joy of working with pediatric patients. We also discuss the importance of understanding the unique needs of paediatric patients and the need for pharmacists to be comfortable with the uncomfortable as we don't always have a clear answer.
