On this episode Razib talks to Jesse Singal, a journalist who has covered the social science beat for the last decade. Singal has an undergraduate degree in philosophy from University of Michigan and a master's in public affairs from Princeton. Currently a freelance journalist who writes his own Substack, Singal-Minded, and contributes to Blocked and Reported with Katie Herzog, Singal is formerly an editor at New York Magazine. His first book The Quick Fix: Why Fad Psychology Can't Cure Our Social Ills, covered the replication crisis. Razib and Singal first talk about what he learned, and unlearned, during his time as a reporter at New York Magazine, especially social psychology results that were long on glamor but short on robustness. They discuss how long we've known that social psychology had a problem, and whether it still hasn't reformed itself. Singal also reflects on his role in publicizing sexy findings, and how journalism has taken steps to be more careful lately. They also address some of the specific findings that came out of early 2010's social science, from implicit bias to power posing. Next, Razib asks Singal about youth gender medicine, and the major controversies over the last few years. Singal discusses the differences between female to male transitions as opposed to male to female, and relates the whole domain back to the replication crisis and the lack of good research. They also discuss political and social aspects, and where Singal sees youth gender medicine going in the next few years.
Interview with Anik Singal In this podcast interview on Power Your Profits, Anik Singal, a successful entrepreneur and CEO of Lurn Inc., shares his story of resilience and transformation after a difficult 18-month investigation by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Despite building a $40 million company with a strong reputation, Singal was hit with a $2.5 million FTC settlement that cost him an estimated $15 million in total losses, including a pending acquisition. He reflects on how the experience, which was even more mentally and emotionally draining than a life-threatening health crisis, has shaped his new mission of helping entrepreneurs navigate compliance and avoid legal pitfalls. Singal now focuses on educating others about FTC regulations, offering valuable lessons learned from his experience while rebuilding his business. His message is one of service, resilience, and the importance of understanding legal compliance in entrepreneurship. It's estimated that this year, on average, 76 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer every day. In Canada, prostate cancer makes up 22% of all cancer diagnoses in men. However unlike many cancers, prostate cancer is a condition that you can live and even thrive with. Here, Dr. Peter Nord and Dr. Rajiv Singal hear from two Medcan clients who were diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer here at Medcan. Hear about their experiences, how you can prevent prostate cancer, and why a diagnosis does not have to hold you back from living a long and happy life. F., Shneider, N. A., Bradshaw, E. M., Elyaman, W. Abstract: Recent murine studies have highlighted a crucial role for the meninges in surveilling the central nervous system (CNS) and influencing CNS inflammation. However, how meningeal immunity is altered in human neurodegeneration and its potential effects on neuroinflammation is understudied. In the present study, we performed single-cell analysis of the transcriptomes and T cell receptor repertoire of 72,576 immune cells from 36 postmortem human brain and leptomeninges tissues from donors with neurodegenerative diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimers disease, and Parkinsons disease. We identified the meninges as an important site of antigen presentation and CD8 T cell activation and clonal expansion and found that T cell activation in the meninges is a requirement for infiltration into the CNS. We further found that natural killer cells have the potential to negatively regulate T cell activation locally in the meninges through direct killing and are one of many regulatory mechanisms that work to control excessive neuroinflammation. The Second Radio Synchrotron Background Workshop: Conference Summary and Report by J. Singal et al. on Wednesday 30 November We summarize the second radio synchrotron background workshop, which took place June 15-17, 2022 in Barolo, Italy. This meeting was convened because available measurements of the diffuse radio zero level continue to suggest that it is several times higher than can be attributed to known Galactic and extragalactic sources and processes, rendering it the least well understood electromagnetic background at present and a major outstanding question in astrophysics. The workshop agreed on the next priorities for investigations of this phenomenon, which include searching for evidence of the Radio Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, carrying out cross-correlation analyses of radio emission with other tracers, and supporting the completion of the 310 MHz absolutely calibrated sky map project. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.16547v1

Hey everyone and welcome back to Eggs. This week we have special guest, SEO wizard, and entrepreneur, Vikas Singal. Also known as Sam, Vikas is the creator of SamBlogs a digital marketing firm based in India. Unlike your typical SEO agency, SamBlogs creates a unique experience for their clients that addresses their challenges and caters to their business needs with clarity, simplicity, experience, and most importantly honesty. From a small village in India, and with a background in mechanical engineering, Vikas has long been entrepreneurial. In 2008, he started his first marketing agency in Mumbai but unfortunately — or fortunately — it failed. It was a devastating blow, but also became one of the most profound learning experiences in his life. Just a few years later Vikas discovered digital marketing and realized he'd found his calling. Working independently at first, then rapidly growing, he discovered he had a unique understanding of SEO — or search engine optimization. He developed his knowledge and in short order launched SamBlogs, which has become one of the top digital marketing agencies in India. It's been a wild ride, and we can't wait to dig in. Vineet Singal, co-founder and CEO of CareMessage, a messaging platform for health safety net organizations, joins Dominique and David to share why he created CareMessage out of his original work in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood. He talks about why he turned down a scholarship to medical school to continue this work, and why he is so passionate about helping underserved populations manage their conditions and take responsibility for their health. Vineet describes how CareMessage grew from a Stanford undergraduate project to become the largest patient engagement program in the United States and discusses the types of data held by CareMessage and other healthcare clinics, as well how as how they ensure their HIPAA compliance. It's common to see tech journalists make proclamations about how the internet has fundamentally changed the ways that we think, interact, and most importantly, argue with one another. It's also common to see them herald the arrival of a “new science” that promises to provide technical answers to all questions and solve all problems that come with the “disruptive” technologies that have “revolutionized” our world. But has the internet really caused such a drastic divergence from how we operate offline? And do we really need a “new science” for studying things like argument and disagreement, especially when already-established disciplines like rhetoric, philosophy, and the conspicuously named argumentation theory have been studying these topics for millenia? On today's episode, we offer a re:joinder to an infamous 2019 article in The Atlantic by Jesse Singal, entitled “The New Science of How to Argue--Constructively.” In the article, Singal profiles a man who claims to have invented a “new science of disagreement” - the Swedish blogger John Nerst, a self-proclaimed polymath who cut his teeth in the “Intellectual Dark Web”-adjacent, hyper-rationalist online blogosphere. Nerst's “new discipline,” which he calls “Erisology,” claims to have invented a series of tools to help people better navigate arguments and disagreements online. In reality, as we point out, Nerst has merely stumbled into concepts and theories that have been debated by theorists of logic and argumentation for centuries, such as stasis theory, ideographs, and “bracketing” social difference in public deliberations. The distinction, we find, is that Nerst's and Singal's vision of a new culture of disagreement is reliant on rationalist rules that belie an authoritarian social and political agenda. We also discuss how privileged men react when their ideas are challenged for the first time, Jesse Singal's beleaguered Twitter mentions, and what this article truly reveals about the nature of the internet: its power to elevate bloggers to the status of credentialed, peer-reviewed academics, as long as their ideas are laundered through online op-ed columnists. In the spirit of generosity, here is Nerst's follow-up blog explaining & defending his ideas: “A Defense of Erisology”Works and Concepts Cited in this Episode:re:blurb on Stasis Theoryre:blurb on IdeographsFahnestock, J., & Secor, M. Jesse Singal, a New York-based writer, talks to Quillette's Jonathan Kay about the reaction to his controversial cover story for The Atlantic about transgender adolescents. Among other things, Singal interviewed a number of adults who have "detransitioned"—had a change of heart about switching genders after undergoing irreversible medical procedures. This provoked accusations of "transphobia" from trans activists, who argued that highlighting these cases would make parents and mental health professionals needlessly sceptical when reacting to children's self-diagnosis of gender dysphoria and make it more difficult for those children to get medical treatment.
