Join us for a transformative episode of The Mic Drop Club as we team up with MVA and its incredible programme manager, Dawn Apcar, who brings her wealth of experience and passion for community work to the forefront of the discussion. Dawn's journey began when she left school after her A-Levels, unsure of her career path. She soon found her calling in the NHS, working as a Pharmacy Technician for nearly a decade at All Saints Hospital. However, after having children and gaining insight into the lives of people struggling with substance misuse and HIV, Dawn knew she wanted to do more—especially outside the hospital setting. This realization led Dawn to a new role as an outreach worker with NHS Addiction Services, where she supported ex-offenders and sex workers, helping them reclaim their lives and empowering them to make positive changes. Her passion for advocacy continued as she moved into a position with KCC, where she engaged with service users to give them a voice in shaping the support they received. After a brief break from over 25 years in public service, Dawn returned to full-time work in the voluntary sector, managing community-driven projects focused on health and well-being. Now, as the MVA Programmes Manager, she leads initiatives like the Befriending Program, supporting lonely and isolated individuals in Medway, and other projects aimed at tackling health inequalities. In this episode, we explore: Dawn's inspiring journey from the NHS to the voluntary sector and how her personal experiences fuel her passion for community work. How MVA's Befriending Program is making a tangible difference in the lives of isolated individuals by offering them human connection and support. The power of listening and creating safe spaces for people to regain their confidence and take control of their lives. Through engaging conversations with host Douglas Hamandishe, Dawn shares how small actions, like a weekly phone call, can change lives. She also dives into her philosophy of giving people the opportunity to get involved in something meaningful, make positive changes, and ultimately transform their own lives. Whether you're looking to volunteer, work in community development, or just need some inspiration, this episode is packed with insights from Dawn's rich career and the life-changing impact she is making at MVA.   Don't just live life. Through these expansions, HSD will offer students multiple pathways to success after graduating from high school: Immediately entering the workforce in the field of healthcare; Pursuing an associate degree; or Enrolling in a four-year college or university. All three options promise jobs that are high-wage and high-demand in the growing, diverse healthcare industry.  HSD offers five CTE Health Science programs: Century High School Health Science, Glencoe High School Health Science, Hillsboro High School Bioscience Technologies, Hillsboro High School Sports Medicine, and Liberty High School Health Sciences. We look forward to the positive outcomes this grant and its associated projects and activities will have for students across the district.  Our featured video highlights the importance of student voice! Student voice was a foundational component of the development of our new Strategic Plan, and will continue to be in the years to come. For that reason, we asked some of the students who participated on the Student Voice Strategic Planning Team to record a video for HSD students, letting them know how important it is for them to respond to the annual Strategic Plan survey in May. Information received through the survey is analyzed along with student achievement, attendance, graduation, and other quantitative and qualitative data to help us monitor progress and modify our actions as we strive to meet our improvement goals. Check out the video on our website. There will be no school for all students on Monday, January 15th in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Today, the institution has six campuses across the state, online classes, and two early learning centers in Lafayette and Alexandria. Noah is an advocate for all post-secondary educational offerings and is active with One Acadiana's Workforce Development Strategy to ensure that local employers can find skilled workers that fit market needs. Unitech staff partner with their students at Unitech to ensure that the soft skills needed to stay employed are learned while training for their new career. "There is a universal truth among all hiring managers: they want to hire people who make their lives easier, not harder. So when you're interviewing for a job, your goal is not to tell them how great you are. Your job is to convince them that you are the answer to their problems and you'll make their job easier." The majority of students at Unitech are studying allied health field courses. Classes offered include Dental Assisting, EKG/Phlebotomy technician, Medical Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, medical billing and coding, as well as Massage Therapy, IT Technician, IT Support Specialist, and Early Childhood Ancillary Certificate. At any given time there are approximately 1100 students enrolled in what Noah calls a "rolling program of enrollment" that allows students to start classes each Monday. Noah's mom, Deanna, created this model to allow students to start a new career and obtain an education as soon as possible. Unitech held its first graduation for the Unitech Leadership and Development Institute in October 2023. Noah is active in the community and serves as President of the Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana. He was honored in 2022 as an Acadiana Top 20 under 40 Award Recipient. Noah Brandon spoke of his understanding of the importance of intentionality when dealing with others. Most of us carry around fears and insecurities, and it can show in our actions if people don't know us. Especially as you move up the career ladder. Our insecurities can shape how people size us up. We may be shy but it can come off as aloofness. People may think, "You're the guy in charge....you're not supposed to be insecure!' He believes that if you look at people with love instead of fear, it really changes the whole dynamic. "If I look at others and give them the benefit of the doubt.....it becomes so much easier to interact with people." He designs vaccine programs, participates in medical billing, and spreads public health information in and out of the pharmacy. In the process, he shows just what techs are capable of. Whether you're a tech yourself or a full-time pharmacy owner, Parker offers helpful advice and proves how you can use the tech effect to your advantage.
