Many marketing agencies talk about what you are not doing and what you need to be doing. Not a lot of them practice what they preach. Why is that? In this episode, Jesus brings on Chris Roche who is the CEO and Founder of Catalyst Consulting - a revenue and pipeline growth-focused marketing agency. Roche began his entrepreneurial journey after college, launching a SaaS company to help facilitate the research and communication from high school athletes to college coaches/recruiters. After scaling that company to a successful exit, Roche headed up marketing and sales for Iron Forge - a custom software development shop, scaling their revenues from $250,000 to $3,000,000 in annual sales. Roche founded Catalyst 12 months ago with the simple goal of taking his unique sales/marketing skill set and working with a small group of B2B SaaS companies.

Welcome to Episode 71 of Good Will Hunters from the Development Policy Centre. This episode is focused on the impact COVID19 will have on both developing countries and the aid and development sector. This week, I spoke on ABC’s Radio National Saturday Extra Program, on the topic of the Pacific and COVID19. https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/saturdayextra/ In today’s episode I’m speaking to Fiona Tarpey and Chris Roche. Fiona Tarpey is the Head of Advocacy for the International Programs Department of the Australian Red Cross. She is also Co-Chair of ACFIDs Development Practice Committee. Chris Roche is the Director of the Institute for Human Security and Social Change at La Trobe University, and a Senior Research Partner of the Developmental Leadership Program. Chris and Fiona jointly authored an article for the Devpolicy blog this week, titled ‘COVID19, localisation and locally led development: A critical juncture’. In sum, the article argued that COVID19 will force a large-scale transformation of the international development sector, and that this may actually be a good thing for local and international actors in the long term. https://devpolicy.org/covid-19-localisation-and-locally-led-development-a-critical-juncture-20200323/ Int he interview, Fiona, Chris and I discuss why a reimagining of the development sector could be a good thing, including why restrictions on travel mean that local organisations suddenly have a more critical role to play. We discuss whether the development sector is equipped to work digitally, and subsequent to that, whether local organisations and local governments in the Pacific are adequately skilled and resourced to manage this new workload. We also talk about the expected downturn in funding for the international development sector, including both NGOs and contractors, before finally discussing what will happen if developing countries including in the Pacific need economic bail-outs. Lastly, I ask Chris and Fiona whether, given the unprecedented scale of health and economic impacts that COVID19 is causing, is there any way that developing countries come out of this better than before? I’ve also written an article on the support developing countries will require due to the sudden and complete loss of tourism revenue - https://www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpreter/no-planes-cruise-ships-crucial-regional-industry-will-need-aid We’ll continue to bring you coverage of the impact of COVID19 in our region as well as for the aid and development sector. If there’s anything you’d really like us to address, please get in touch. Devpolicy Blog also continues to provide extensive coverage of COVID19 impacts on aid and international development, and in the Pacific and in Asia. Check it out at Devpolicy.org, and subscribe to their daily email and fortnightly digest here https://devpolicy.org Enjoy, Rachel and the GWH Team

As a form of weed control in crops reducing row spacing can have a significant impact on weed populations. By reducing crop row spacing the biomass of the weed are reduced but what's even more important is weed seed numbers are dramatically reduced. These were key messages delivered to grain growers at a Weedsmart conference where Paul McIntosh from the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative was a speaker. Also addressing the growers was a farmer from NSW who told of his experience with overcoming a serious weed issue on his property by reducing crop row spacing. This week’s episode of “WisBusiness: The Podcast” features Chris Roche, founder and CEO of RecruitChute. This Whitewater startup connects promising high school soccer players with college programs, giving each a chance to create their own pages and search for potential matches. After nearly two years of growing a pilot platform, Roche is planning to launch a commercial version of the product on Dec. 15. “It works; it beats other companies,” he said. “People tend to appreciate that we’re soccer exclusive.” Roche explains that the recruiting process for sports like football, basketball and baseball is very different from soccer. Rather than looking at different sports, Roche decided to take the company international. “We just signed a contract yesterday with a company that’s going to be taking us to all the professional clubs in Europe,” he said Thursday. “They will be using RecruitChute as a way to help their athletes come to America and play college soccer.” Roche, who grew up in Manchester, England, has played soccer his whole life, including for UW-Whitewater’s Division 3 team. When considering his options after secondary school, he knew he wasn’t good enough to join the professional leagues, but wanted to keep playing all the same. “The beauty of playing college soccer in America is you are a student athlete,” he said. “At the end of the four years of playing, you also have a degree, which is something you can never take away from someone.” In Europe, players going through professional academies can often get dropped around age 17, and left with no degree to fall back on. That makes college soccer in the United States a uniquely attractive option for these players. “How do you recruit a player from Hungary when you’re ... here in New Jersey? There’s no way of doing that,” he said. “Whereas with this, now you can recruit players worldwide from your office. That’s really the direction that we want to move to.”
