This week I'm reading from Douglas Charles Hodgson's book 'Spiritual Revelations from Beyond the Veil: What Humanity Can Learn from the Near Death Experience'.Spiritual Revelations from Beyond the Veil: What Humanity Can Learn from the Near Death Experience decouples spirituality from a religious context and perspective. It examines the intriguing accounts of people who have undergone a near-death experience (NDE) and what was revealed to them while outside their physical bodies. What those people vividly described went well beyond what can be found in religious scripture. The NDE accounts contain descriptions of Heaven and the higher spiritual realms, what interconnectedness/oneness means, the eternal nature and liberation of the soul consciousness, the gift of free will and its purpose, the nature of soul agreements, the universal laws of attraction, reincarnation, and cause and effect (karma), the nature of positive and negative energy, the significance of the death of our physical body as well as our spiritual rebirth and life review. The study and collation of more than 500 NDE accounts, and the identification of common observations and insights drawn therefrom, culminated in the writing of this book. Going beyond the current NDE literature, which mainly examines the historical, religious, philosophical, scientific and medical aspects of this phenomenon, Spiritual Revelations from Beyond the Veil concentrates on the important messages brought back from beyond the veil for humanity's knowledge and benefit. Some of the learnings, observations and insights from the Other Side presented in this book are truly remarkable, and in a few cases, they test the limits of human, Earthly comprehension.BioDouglas Hodgson is a dual citizen of Canada and Australia and a retired lawyer and Dean and Professor of Law residing in Perth, Western Australia. He undertook postgraduate legal study at the University of London before embarking on a 35- year career in higher education in Canada, Australia and New Zealand as a teacher, researcher, scholar, author, human rights advocate and university administrator. His areas of expertise include Public International Law, International Human Rights Law, International Humanitarian Law, Civil Law and Causation Law. Professor Hodgson has authored and published 30 peer reviewed law journal articles and five books.Professor Hodgson's professional networks included the Australian Academy of Law, the Council of Australian Law Deans, the Global Law Deans' Forum and the Australian Research Council. He also served as an advisor to the Australian Red Cross, editor of several law journals and as a member of various university human research ethics committees. He is a regular attender and alumnus of the Oxford Round Table where he has delivered addresses on the concept of an international rule of law, the protection of children's international human rights and the challenges of religious fundamentalism in the public school system from a human rights perspective. As a complement to his work on religious discrimination issues in the educational field, he developed a keen interest in studying and comparing the scriptures of the world's faiths and distilling therefrom common and unifying spiritual principles upon which these great and diverse religions are based, ultimately inspiring him to write Transcendental Spirituality, Wisdom and Virtue: The Divine Virtues and Treasures of the Heart. His interest in transcendental spirituality has strengthened and expanded in his retirement years to include the so-called “near-death experience” and what humanity can learn from those who have returned from beyond the veil and recounted their experiences and observations. This has led to the writing of Spiritual Revelations from Beyond the Veil: What Humanity Can Learn from the Near-Death Experience in which these observations and insights have been collated, analyzed and commented upon.If you wish to reach out to Douglas, you are welcome to do so by connecting with him on his email address: dchodgson53@gmail.comhttp://tinyurl.com/5btrzdmuhttps://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/pastlivespodcast

The recent High Court decision in Qantas v TWU [2023] HCA 27 focussed on the question of how the general protections in the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) work in circumstances where employees did not presently have particular workplace rights (in that case the right to take industrial action), but would have those rights in the future if not for the adverse action being taken.  While that analysis has rightly been the subject of a lot of interest, the outcome in that case turned on the other key concept in general protections claims – the “reverse onus” where employers need to prove that an unlawful reason did not form a substantive part of their reason for taking the action.  In Qantas, it was apparent that there were clear and appropriate commercial reasons for taking the action that occurred.  The question for the Court at first instance was whether Qantas was able to discharge its burden. In this episode of the Podcast, Emily Haar and Erin McCarthy discuss how legally-defensible decisions are best made, whether by a Board, the Executive, or others down the “decision-making chain”, drawing on a number of recent (and not so recent) cases in the general protections space, including Barclay, BHP Coal, Kodak, Claremont Coal, Australian Red Cross, Wong v NAB, and Serpanos.  Being intentional about the process, as well as what is considered, and what is documented, in making a decision will best protect employers in the case of a legal claim.

The international armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine has revealed a knowledge gap across the global financial sector regarding exposure to armed conflict, reiterating an already pressing need to deepen corporate understanding of international humanitarian law (IHL). Although there is mounting pressure on companies to conduct structured and informed heightened human rights due diligence when investing or doing business in conflict-affected contexts, more must be done to effectively embed IHL and conflict sensitivity into corporate policies and practices. In 2022, Australian Red Cross engaged Deloitte Australia to undertake a review of the extent to which the Australian financial sector incorporates IHL and conflict-related considerations in investment and operational decision-making. In this post, Australian Red Cross Legal Adviser, Fauve Kurnadi, and Australian lawyer, Adaena Sinclair-Blakemore, discuss some of the findings from this report, including risks and trends in the Australian financial sector and the growing relevance of IHL to financial institutions, as well as what certain actors like the Responsible Investment Association of Australasia are doing to address IHL knowledge and implementation gaps that exist across the sector.

Welcome back to the second episode we recorded over in the West during our quick visit to Perth. In case anyone has been waiting for an example of someone who didn't have to leave the law to find their yay, my dear friend Amy Barber is your woman. As you'll hear, her legal career would have been my dream career if business hadn't fallen into my lap and I am continually in awe of her resilience, open-mindedness and sense of social justice. While she too started out in corporate law at the same firm as two time Seize the Yay guest Samantha Gash for whom we were both recently bridesmaids, Amy shifted quickly towards the realm of international and humanitarian law to build one of the coolest careers I've encountered. Amy's first step out of corporate was a dramatic one into the United Nations as a prosecutor in the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. From there, she has worked in East Timor, Cambodia and Liberia and developed a keen interest in military law in the process. On returning home to Australia to settle down with her husband and start a family, she has also joined the Army Reserves part time as a legal officer (now officially Captain Barber) and works full time as legal counsel for the Australian Red Cross so also has some insights into the bushfire relief work the organisation has been doing. (In her spare time, she teaches yoga in a women's prison - I mean, seriously). She is endlessly fascinating and I hope you enjoy as much as I did. + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Join our Facebook community here + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!
