Welcome to this episode of HALO Talks, where host Pete Moore sits down with Bryce Berry, a New York native whose career led him from Westchester County to the mountains of Salt Lake City, and eventually to building a powerhouse presence in the Gold's Gym franchise network. Bryce shares his entrepreneurial path, starting with the unexpected lessons learned from running Dairy Queen stores, before moving into the health club industry and launching some of the largest and most successful Gold's Gym locations in Colorado, Wyoming, and Washington. From the intricacies of site selection and gym operations to adapting to changing market dynamics and member expectations, Bryce reveals how he's created "rainmaker" clubs by offering standout amenities like expansive weightlifting and cardio areas, basketball courts, racquetball, pickleball, and innovative tanning and recovery services. He digs into the evolving branding landscape of fitness franchises, the role of pricing strategy, and why the Gold's Gym name still carries significant weight in local communities. Listen now to hear Bryce's insights on building thriving gyms, the impact of market trends on business decisions, and how his commitment to quality and member experience is shaping the future of fitness for the next generation of club-goers. Key themes discussed Gold's Gym franchise growth and operations. Site selection strategies for gym locations. Importance of brand recognition in fitness industry. Pricing models and market positioning for gyms. Community amenities: Basketball, pickleball, saunas, recovery. Private equity partnerships and business structure. Adapting gym facilities to trends in strength and cardio equipment. A Few Key Takeaways: 1.Strategic Growth and Site Selection: Bryce talks about his career path from Westchester County to building a network of Gold's Gyms, detailing how he strategically drew a 300-mile radius around his home and used his knowledge from previous business ventures (like a book bindery) to select prime gym locations. His hands-on, boots-on-the-ground approach to site selection set the foundation for successful club launches. 2. Gold's Gym Brand Equity: Bryce highlights the enduring power of the Gold's Gym brand. Despite new competitors and rebranded gyms popping up (such as VASA, EoS, and Fitness Connection), he argues that Gold's still has strong recognition and credibility with consumers. People know Gold's Gym, which translates into excitement, loyalty, and ongoing business success. 3. Mid-Range Pricing Wins: Berry defends the decision to position his clubs in the mid-price range, emphasizing that this "middle" is where the majority of the market is. Instead of chasing ultra-low-cost volume or high-end exclusivity, his strategy is to deliver great value for a reasonable price, which has continually proven successful in the communities he serves. 4. Amenity-Rich, Community-Focused Clubs: The Gold's Gym facilities in Colorado, Wyoming, and Washington are designed as urban or suburban "country clubs" with oversized footprints (some over 50,000 sq ft). Bryce invests heavily in amenities like basketball courts, racquetball, pickleball nights, dry saunas, and top-of-the-line equipment to create a vibrant community feel and cater to a broad clientele. 5. Innovation and Adaptation for Younger Members: Bryce discusses a current trend he's seeing with younger members (especially ages 18–40) favoring strength and cardio equipment, recovery spaces, and high-quality gear such as the Matrix treadmill. He's focused on adapting his clubs to these preferences, particularly with recovery rooms, oversized saunas, and best-in-class equipment—which has helped him attract and retain this growing demographic.

Each insight is redolent with the potential to transform leadership dynamics within the agribusiness context.Key Takeaways:Being intentional means crafting clear goals and expectations, and ensuring those are brought into action "by design."Establishing trust within the team and with customers is pivotal for business success and fostering a sound company culture. An extensive onboarding process, potentially spanning a year, is vital to setting new team members up for success.Regular virtual meetings and annual in-person gatherings can help build and maintain a strong team dynamic, even with a geographically dispersed sales force. When transitioning into a sales role or entering a new market, embracing change and leveraging past experiences can lead to significant personal and professional growth.Notable Quotes:"To be intentional as a leader to me would be setting clear goals, setting expectations, and then, making sure you're putting those expectations into action." - Don Sutton"We really empower our salespeople... They know what they need to do; they're professionals." - Don Sutton"We went through this book as a sales team and broke down each chapter and how it relates to our jobs... establishing trust... has really helped our company." - Don Sutton on "The Speed of Trust" by Stephen Covey"You can't get distracted by everything else that's going around you because there's a lot of that, the distractions that can drain your time." - Don Sutton"Leading indicators vs. lagging indicators... we're not paying attention to the leading ones that are going to make us long term successful." - Mark JewellJoin us for the full episode to explore the intricacies of intentional leadership with Don
Zvi Goffer is a former finance executive and father who was inspired to take action when planting the seeds of college education in the minds of his two kids. His idea for Campus VR took root when he brought his kids to his alma mater, a state school in New York . . . which unfortunately didn't do a good job representing themselves on their website. Wanting to do more than just show pictures, he decided to take action and figured there had to be a better way to engage kids in the modern era versus just "point and click." Zvi dove into the VR world, learned it from the ground up and they actually ended up building their own robot! Campus VR has since evolved into a game-changing platform for top colleges and teams around the country. He discusses the power of VR in creating immersive experiences and how it can revolutionize the way businesses attract and engage potential clients. Pete and Zvi dive into the future of VR tech, its potential impact on various industries, and serves as a captivating exploration of entrepreneurship and innovative thinking. On the importance of college being accessible and VR aiding in the athlete recruiting process, Zvi states, "You shouldn't have to have a certain amount of money in your bank account, or be in a certain geographical location, or worry about the convenience of your parents being able to take you on a trip and miss work or whatever. These should not be hindrances [in the college decision process.] Some key moments: Introducing kids to college through personal experience. Discovered potential in VR; gathered support from investors. Research, niche market, athletic facilities showcase success. Show gym experience through VR for marketing. Collegiate NIL lets sponsors advertise in videos. Don't assume an idea is already utilized. A few key takeaways: 1. VR in Education and Athletics: Zvi founded Campus VR and offers a unique VR experience for college campuses. He identified the need for a more engaging way to showcase campuses to prospective students and saw potential in using VR to excite students about attending college. Additionally, Campus VR created immersive experiences for showcasing athletic facilities at top-tier programs, enhancing the recruiting process. 2. Entrepreneurial Insights: Zvi shares his journey as an entrepreneur, emphasizing the importance of never assuming an idea is already being utilized. He emphasized the value of conducting thorough research, staying committed to the long-term vision, and being open to innovative ideas. 3. Virtual Tours for Health Clubs: The conversation explored the potential application of VR technology in health clubs to provide highly interactive virtual tours. This could showcase workout classes, facilities, and studios to attract and excite prospective members. The discussion delved into the cost and potential sponsorships for creating VR experiences as well. Click here to download transcript. Dom Giordano, WPHT host and former teacher, has dedicated much of his daily show toward parents who are taking it into their own hands to push back against school boards that have a negative impact on their children. This has culminated in a weekly podcast on education, Readin', Writin', and Reason, which has allowed wonderful relationships to develop between Giordano, educators, and parents throughout the country who are speaking out against overbearing school boards. First, Dom welcomes in Pennsylvania State Senator Scott Martin, who helps to unpack his proposed Senate Bill 1278, which aims to limit sexual content in Pennsylvania schools, but has been twisted and called Pennsylvania's version of Florida's ‘Don't Say Gay Bill.' Sen. Martin breaks down exactly what is in the bill, explaining why he and others have taken up this fight, and tells that it does things like protect children from incredibly sexual imagery that wouldn't be exposed to children anywhere else. Then, Dom welcomes in a student by the name of Daniel, who emailed the show after he alleges he lost his internship at a local Fitness Club for his political views, after he expressed his support for former President Donald Trump when being pressed by students. Daniel, who grew up in Reading, PA, traveled from Texas to take an internship in Philadelphia as a youth tennis coach, hoping to bolster his resume with experience at the very respected Club. Last Friday, he was working with students when they asked him who, between Biden and Trump, he preferred. Daniel tells us that he felt the need to tell the truth, which made it back to parents, who seemingly demanded that he be terminated for his political views. After catching wind of the story, Jim Worthington, owner of the Newtown Athletic Club, was disappointed to hear of the injustice and was generous enough to offer his help to Daniel. Jim tells Dom that he's disappointed to report that the NAC doesn't have tennis courts, but would be happy to either provide him employment in another field or help connect Daniel with plugged in individuals in the tennis industry.
