This is Dr. MaryAnn Diorio, novelist and life coach, welcoming you to another episode of Winning with the Word. Today is April 19, 2021, and this is Episode #11 of Series 2021. This episode is titled “Your Authority and Power in Christ” _______________________________ Have you had trouble getting some of your prayers answered? If so, this week's post and podcast may explain why. One of the key reasons we do not get answers to our prayers is that we ask God to do something that He has told us to do. Something which He has already given us the power and the authority to do. God is a God of law and order. He has established spiritual laws, and He will not violate those laws. Indeed, in cases relating to man's dominion on the earth, God has chosen to limit Himself. Brother Kenneth Hagin, who is now with the Lord, told of the time that Jesus appeared to him. While Jesus was speaking, a demon got between Him and Brother Hagin and started creating such a ruckus that Brother Hagin could not hear what Jesus was saying. As you can imagine, Brother Hagin was getting quite frustrated because he needed to hear what the Lord was saying to him. Finally, Brother Hagin blurted out, "Lord Jesus, please send this demon away. I can't hear a thing You're saying!" To Brother Hagin's great surprise, Jesus said, "I can't." Brother Hagin was astounded. "Lord, what do you mean You can't. You're GOD!" "Yes," Jesus replied. "But I have chosen to limit My power and authority on the earth because I have given it to man. You have to command the demon to leave." So, Brother Hagin commanded the demon to leave in the Name of Jesus, and the demon immediately left. As born-again Christ-followers, we have that same authority and power residing in us. A simple illustration will explain how the authority and the power of Christ in us work. Most of us have electricity in our homes. If you walk into a room in your house and it is dark, do you call the electric company to ask them to turn on the lights? No, of course not. You turn on the lights yourself. Why? Because the electric company has already supplied the electric power to your home, but it is up to you to flip on the light switch. If you don't flip on the switch, all the power coming into your house from the electric company will do you no good. Well, the same principle applies to us believers. God has given us the power and the authority to fulfill His Great Commission as He commanded us to do in the Gospel of Mark, chapter 16. That power is on the inside of us. God is the Electric Company. But we have to switch on the power inside us in order to heal the sick, raise the dead, and cast out demons. In other words, we have to flip on the switch of that power to get it flowing. If we do not switch on the power switch, nothing will happen, even though all the power we need is inside us. How do we flip on the switch? By faith. To expect God to flip on the switch is a wrong expectation. His job is to be the Electric Company, to supply the power of the Holy Spirit. He will not flip the switch for us. Why not?

Grace and Grit Grace: The enabling power and love of God (to believe, grow, and persevere) offered freely and undeserved. Grit: A trait of courage, resilience, perseverance, passion, and character which fuels people to reach an objective. Finding your “Why” Don’t Be Ashamed – Do the Work The Grace of God and the Big Why Paul’s Example of Grace and Grit When Suffering Hits Home Questions: What challenged you or encouraged you from the message today? Have you given thought to your “Why”? What motivates you? Have you ever felt ashamed or scared to share what you believe about Jesus? Why? How does the gospel motivate followers of Christ to live for Jesus and share the gospel? In what ways can Paul’s example encourage us to live more fully for Christ? Have you ever been disappointed or let down by other Christians? How does Paul handle being abandoned by other followers of Christ?
The Bible. It’s been called the foundation of our civilization, a sacred book, even our guide for life. Actually, it’s more than that. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” From ancient times, God decided that He would communicate with humans through language, the written word. He wanted us to have our history and His instructions for living in a form that we wouldn’t forget or lose. In effect, the Bible is like a mirror we can hold up and look into. Do we see a reflection of Christ? Have we spent time with God in prayer today? Are we helping share the Gospel in our daily walk? The Word of God is eternal. We can hold it in our hands, and read it and apply it to our lives. Do yourself a favor and read some of it today! Let’s pray. Lord, thank you for giving us your thoughts, and helping us know you better through your Word. Amen.
On any given Sunday, if a pastor asks by a show of hands how many in the congregation consider themselves followers of Christ, most would raise their hands. But if he followed up that question with: "And how many of you know what it means to be a follower of Jesus today?" - the number of raised hands would drop considerably. Maybe even to none. Why? Because our view today of following Jesus is a far cry from what it meant in the time of Jesus. Think about it for a moment. Today, following Jesus means agreeing to a set of doctrinal facts, going to church regularly, tithing, volunteering for some service ministry, adhering to a moral code, and reading and praying as often as we can. But in the New Testament, following Jesus meant something quite different. Jesus said, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me" (Matt. 16:24). Note the components of His invitation. First, it begins with a conditional clause, if, like a classic if / then statement. "If you desire to come after Me, then these are the conditions." Next, we have self-denial or self-subjugation to God. "If you desire to come after Me, the first condition is to deny yourself." And finally, we are now privy to the degree to which self-denial must take place. "If you desire to come after Me, the first condition is to deny yourself even to the point of death, and a horrific death at that." And only then does Jesus say, "and follow Me." First, meet the conditions, and then "follow Me." But What About Desire Exactly. The entire invitation of Jesus hinges on the word, desire. If you desire, then do the following. If you don't desire, then this message must not be for you. Which begs the questions, what is your desire regarding following Jesus? And is your desire great enough to pay the price necessary to meet His conditions? Ouch. This is where it often gets personal. In order to fully understand all of what Jesus said when He revealed His conditions of following Him, let's look at this invitation from all three Gospel accounts. Only then can we fully understand all the implications and the Cost of Discipleship (to quote Bonhoeffer). The following is from Matthew 16:24-25, Mark 8:34-35, and Luke 9:23-24: Then Jesus (MK) called the people to Himself (LK) and said to them all, (MK) with His disciples also, (MT) "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross (LK) daily, (MT) and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake (MK) and the gospel’s (MT) will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul (LK) and is himself destroyed or lost? (MT) Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? (MK) For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes (LK) in His own glory, and (MT) in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works." Today, we will primarily focus on the issue of desire. What is your desire regarding Christ? Have you counted the costs of a deeper relationship with Him? Are you ready to pay the price? No matter what that price might be? Are you paying any price right now for your commitment to the Lord? Do you know if it will be much different in the future? Are you tired of taking two steps forward and then losing ground once again because you desire something less than all of His fullness manifested in your life? If so, then keep listening. The following is a study on our Desire to Follow Christ.

The Pharisees complain that Jesus’ disciples are harvesting by picking grains. vv.25-26. Jesus reminds them of 1 Sam 21 when David’s men entered the tabernacle and ate the consecrated bread. The Lord’s day is a blessing not a burden. v. 28. Jesus, as Lord of the Sabbath, puts himself in the place of God. Should Christians observe the Lord’s Day? We should rest – even as NT believers, we should do good as well. God rested on the 6th day, not because he needed it, but to set an example for us. It does not earn favor with God, but it does help us trust God instead of striving. We need rest for our own good: spiritually, physically, mentally We need time to honor and love the Lord. Mark 3:1-6 Jesus Heals on the Sabbath v. 2. The Pharisees’ minds were set on finding something to accuse Jesus. v. 4. Jesus’ mind was on mercy toward a crippled man. v. 5. Jesus was angry (indignant) and grieved at their hardness of heart. Jesus example: It’s always right to do good. If we would follow Jesus well, we will look for opportunities to help others, to show mercy and compassion on them, to care for the sick and the poor.

Have them read the gospels, let them come face to face with Jesus. Mark 2:18-22 – Question About Fasting v. 18. John’s disciples and the Pharisees asked why Jesus’ disciples do not fast. v. 19. Fasting is a somber activity – Jews were only required to fast 1/yr: Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). Pharisees fasted 2/wk. Jesus says his coming is like a wedding celebration. “This is not a time for fasting, but celebration – the bridegroom is here.” OT refers to God as Israel’s husband (Isa, Eze, Hos). Jesus is the bridegroom at whose coming we should rejoice. v. 20. Jesus introduces an odd twist – The bridegroom will be taken. When you consider what your sin cost, you will fast and mourn. There will be times when Jesus is hidden – that will be time in life for fasting. Mark 2:21-22 Jesus came to make things new. Jesus doesn’t fit into your box. New patch and old cloth. New wine and old wineskin. In the ancient world the skins of goats were used to hold wine. They were flexible and strong and allowed the new wine to ferment. An old wineskin becomes brittle and weak. The new patch and new wine are incompatible with the old. Jesus is the new patch/new wine. He is not an add-on to your life. The Pharisees represent the old cloth, old wineskin. They were concerned with religiosity, justifying themselves. The Law was fulfilled at Calvary when the perfect sacrifice was offered. The practices of the old covenant have to be thrown out, the new has come. APPLICATION: The question is not whether or not you’ll make room for Jesus in your life. The question is whether you will forsake your old life for new life with him. Mark 2:23-28 – Lord of the Sabbath vv. 23-24. What is the usefulness and relevance of movement and posture in corporate worship? This is the second in a series on this topic inspired by a chapter in “Participating in Worship” by Craig Douglas Erickson. Today we look at the issue of standing. We are very well used to standing in church services. But how we thought about its purpose? Do we know why we stand? There are many postures for prayer, but the most common in the old Testament is standing: Exodus 33:8, 10; 1 Samuel 1:26; Psalm 134; Matthew 6:5; Luke 18:11-13. Jesus stood to pray and expected that his followers would do so also (Mark 11:25). The people of God stood to listen to God as he spoke to them (Exodus 19:17; Nehemiah 8:5). Jesus stood up to speak and to read in the synagogue (Luke 4:16). Why do we stand? I would suggest that we stand to indicate three things: 1. Respect. It’s customary to stand when someone to whom you wish to show respect comes in to a room. Military personnel stand at attention when receiving orders. Those in a courtroom stand when the judge enters. 2. Readiness. When standing one is ready to move, to act, to serve. 3. Confidence. Quoting Eriksson, “As a posture for prayer, standing signifies the freedom and dignity of the new covenant. Adopted as God’s children, Christians may stand before God confident that they have been redeemed. Moreover, standing expresses the confidence of Christians as they await the final coming of the Lord. As the elect, they will be able to stand when God appears (Malachi 3:2). Enraptured in heaven, they will stand before the Lamb (Revelations 7:9; 15:2). With these thoughts in mind, perhaps we should consider more carefully when we stand in a corporate worship context. Should we stand for the reading of Scripture? Would it be helpful to stand together at the end of the service and receive an exhortation to go out into the world to act for Christ? Might it be healthy to vary our prayer postures at different points in the service and include standing as one way to exult in the confidence we have in Christ? Have you tried something like this? Have you seen something like this done well? Please add your comments on this week’s topic. We learn best when we learn in community. Do you have a question about teaching the Bible? Who am I? What gives me worth? We're told to be who we are, but this can lead to identity confusion. It creates a crushing burden because God did not create us to find out our own identity. He has given us an identity, in Christ. We come to be in Christ through faith. We are chosen, forgiven, and given the Holy Spirit. Are you in Christ? Have you experienced the abundant love and grace that God lavishes on us through Christ? Our sin separates is from God, so it’s only in Christ that we can be forgiven and redeemed and be brought into a right relationship with God. Through a union with Christ, we become heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ. Nothing outside of Christ will give any satisfying identity or give you worth.
Can modern eyes (and hearts) blinded by digital-age special effects take in the Transfiguration of Christ? Have we lost the ability to be stunned into silent reverence before God's glory? Twenty-Seven Degrees Whats Your Spiritual Temperature January-26-2019 Its 27 degrees this morning here in Loganville Georgia. Leviticus 6:12 The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 1. Whats your “Spiritual Temperature?” 2. How are you keeping your relationship with Christ above 27 degrees? 3. How are you staying connected? 4. Whats your “desire,” temperature to know Christ? 5. Whats the temperature of your willingness to be intentional in staying connected to Christ? 6. Whats your strategic temperature in the “How” you are keeping your spiritual temperature above 27 degrees? 7. Whats your willingness to be held “accountable,” do you have a circle of accountability partners? 8. Whats your “transparency,” temperature? 9. Whats your spiritual “attitude,” temperature today? I was sitting near our fireplace when I noticed a red hot ember dropped from the fire and it laid off to the one side by itself. It didn’t take long before the red hot ember started to smolder, lost its red hot glow, became dimmer and dimmer and eventually no longer was giving off heat. John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. Leviticus 6:12 The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 Do not quench the Spirit. Do not put out the Holy Spirit's fire! Stay Connected! “The Maximum you are willing to give, will always determine the Minimum your get back.” Desire, Intentional, Strategic, Accountability, Transparency, and Attitude Romans 12:1-2,11 1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. First, Detachment - Write out a list of that defense mechanisms you are attached to. What triggers your response to Christ? Have a conversation (Prayer) with God to show you what your attachment labels are! Anger, Forgiveness, addictions? “We are to detach from the accolades of the world and receive ourselves as Gods’ beloved. Detachment finds its true home in attachment to Jesus only” (Calhoun,2005) Second, Submission - Submission is definitely not popular however submission leads to spiritual maturity (growth). It will align you with God’s Will and freedom. John 3:30 He must become greater; I must become less.” Third, Obedience - Intentional, and eager t! o be obedient. Be accountable! Be teachable! Be approachable! Surrender yourself too Jesus! You cannot do this alone! We are saved by grace and it is only by God working first in us to work through us. Be accountable, submit to one another, we are called into relationships as Jesus was relational. Be Strategic, Be Intentional, Be Accountable Leviticus 6:12 The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. Closing Prayer. Project 938 Small Groups Guide Sermon Based When Love Comes to Town: October 21, 2018 What stood out in the Bible about this week’s sermon? What stood out to you most about the sermon as a whole? What was the application of this week’s sermon for our church? What was the application of this week’s sermon for your personally? Community Question: What is it that you really want? What would people say about you (are you good, bad, nice)? Read Ephesians 3:14-21 as a group and write down what you observe about the passage. Talk about initial observations/questions of the passage as a group and then transition into these questions. In his prayer, Paul prays that “Christ may dwell in your hearts.” Experiencing love is an experience of closeness, because love is local. Who are you closest to? What is your proximity to Christ? Have you prayed that God’s love would enter your heart? Paul prays that “he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being.” If you pray for additional strength, how could that bring you closer to God’s love? Where do you need strength in your life? When do you feel the fullness of God’s love the most? How might you be able to limit your consumption of the “fillers” in your life (TV, social media, ambition, etc.) to experience his fullness more? We tend to overestimate what we can do in a week and underestimate what God can do in a year. Paul says that God can do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine. What does that statement mean to you? How does the word “immeasurable” add weight to this prayer? How has God done more in your life than you could have imagined or asked?
