Creator Talks proudly presents the husband and wife team of writer Paul Tobin and artist Colleen Coover. Together they created the costumed teen cat burglar Bandette. Bandette began as a digital publication in 2012 on Comixology through Monkeybrain Comics. It was nominated for four Eisner's Awards in 2013. Not long after, Dark Horse Comics collected the single issues into soft and hard cover editions. The next Bandette hard cover collection will be released by Dark Horse Comics on July 7th 2021 is Volume 4: The Six Finger Secret. I discuss with Colleen how she illustrates Bandette and the reason for her bold primary color choices. It would not be Creator Talks if I did not get personal with my guests so I ask the happy couple how they met. Did Cupid's arrow strike and was it love at first sight? Paul and Colleen once managed a comic book store in Iowa. Paul shares how he managed to build his comic book collection while he worked there as an employee and how comic shops have changed since the 1980s. He is also an avid comic art collector. Paul talks about some of his favorite pieces of art and why he considers himself lucky to have them. What is it about these artists' work that appeals to Paul? Which ones tuned him off as a youth but now from whom he has great admiration. His answers may surprise you. How has collecting art become an education itself for Paul and Colleen as creators? Paul and Colleen made several trips to France, which is the setting of Bandette's adventures. They share some of their special memories of France and later their decision to move from Iowa to Portland, Oregon for the sake of their careers. In closing I ask Paul and Colleen my Final Nine Questions including what they like to do for recreation, beverage of choice, pet peeve, missed opportunities and when they took a risk. Episode 38 is all about 'Small Favors' by Colleen Coover, a sexy, sexy comic that is also tons of fun. Justin Hall is back with us talking about one of his all-time favorites.
The creative team behind Wrassle Castle takes us inside the tale of a young wrestler on a quest to save her brother.
Sam Adonis (@realsamadonis) returns to the podcast to discuss his upcoming hair vs hair match against Blue Panther August 4th in Arena Mexico. We discuss the world-wide media attention he has gotten for his flag-waving American gimmick in Mexico and how that fits in with wrestling's history of xenophobic heels. We talk about the feud with Blue Panther and invoking the name and gimmick of the late Love Machine Art Barr and his feud 25 years ago in CMLL. We chat about his favorite opponents and partners over his year in Mexico, his upcoming trip to Japan and how things are going for his brother, WWE announcer Corey Graves. Sam is super busy these days, so we thank him very much for his time. Also, a quick shout-out to former podcast guests Colleen Coover and Paul Tobin, for their third consecutive Eisner Award for Bandette. You can hear them discuss it on episode 24. Congratulations to all the winners, some of whom are tentatively planned as future guests.
Another “Previews” in the pullbox means another look into our comics future! This first half of our expanded “Previews” coverage focuses on the catalog's Green section, the back half that just so happens to cover about 75% of comics publishers. What impending February 2017 releases catch Mike & Greg's fancy? 2000 AD at 40! Cadmus! Kolchalka uncensored! Humanoids! Forever War! Tank Girl! All that, plus how seeming verbosity can end up being economical, what publisher still puts out the 80s manga that Time forgot, Colleen Coover's naughty positivity, and much more! Definitively something for everyone in this top half of our two-part “Previews” walkthrough! Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. You can subscribe to it via iTunes or through the RSS feed at RobotsFromTomorrow.com. You can also follow Mike and Greg on Twitter. This episode is brought to you by Third Eye Comics. Lucas has been off jetsetting so rather than leave you without an episode this week, here's an awesome conversation with Colleen Coover and Paul Tobin, creators of the Eisner-winning catburglar-caper-comic Bandette, originally recorded last year for the Devotee podcast. Comics Manifest | Inspiring Interviews with Influential Creators in Comics
Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover are comic creators extraordinaire, they are truly a creative power couple and have won multiple awards for their collaborative creations. Titles that they have collaborated on include, the all ages comic Banana Sunday, the graphic novel Gingerbread Girl, and the multi-award winning comic series, Bandette.
The husband and wife creative team of Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover are getting ready to publish “The House of the Green Mask”, the third volume of their effervescent creation, that Audrey Hepburn of master thieves, “Bandette”. The series won two Eisner awards for best digital comics series in 2013 and this year. Bandette is a pert, teen-aged thief living a barely-closeted life of crime. She steals to delight herself, leaping across the rooftops of the city to tweak the noses and egos of the real bad guys. Bandette's setting is identifiably French — a Paris of the imagination— but it's time period is deliberately fluid. We talk with Tobin and Coover about the pleasures of fleshing out the world around a different kind of action heroine.
Gather ‘round, True Believers. We’re getting all geeked up for the Rose City Comic Con, Sept 10–11. It’s always a hot ticket, given the critical mass of comics creators making their home around these parts now, but we were especially charmed by this year’s crop.Image Comics Moving to Portland - 1:10We start things off with some breaking news. Rumors have been flying that we were the first to confirm: Image Comics is moving to Portland. Image is the third largest publisher in the industry with annual sales around $50 million. Relocating is kind of a no-brainer, given the pool of high-powered Image creators already living here. We explore what sets Image apart (and makes it a prime team-up with Portland), before sitting down for an exclusive interview with the company’s publisher, Eric Stephenson.Bandette Steals Hearts, Jewels, Awards - 10:53The husband and wife creative team of Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover are getting ready to publish “The House of the Green Mask,” the third volume of their effervescent creation, “Bandette.” The series won two Eisner awards for best digital comics series in 2013 and this year. Bandette is a pert, teen-aged thief living a barely-closeted life of crime — the Audrey Hepburn of master thieves. She steals to delight herself, leaping across the rooftops of the city to tweak the noses and egos of the real bad guys. We talk with Tobin and Coover about the pleasures of fleshing out the world around a different kind of action heroine.Blast Off For Bitch Planet - 19:07Kelly Sue DeConnick is riding high with a comic series she created that made a lot of best-of-the-year lists for 2015, and continued going strong this year. “Bitch Planet” is about an all-female, interstellar prison colony in a not-too-distant future. Society sends women there for a variety of crimes — collectively categorized as non-compliance. We talk to Kelly about how she handles the series’ satirical edge, and chat with artist Taki Soma, who did a single-issue story for the series last winter. If you like what you hear in this week’s show, the extended version is right here on our Soundcloud feed. The Loveliest Horror Story of the Year - 27:30Portland comic book artist Tyler Crook and writer Cullen Bunn are behind the series “Harrow County,” a tale of a gentle teenage girl named Emmy, whose coming-of-age is overshadowed by her realization that she’s connected to a deceased witch named Hester Beck and a wide range of ghosts and spirits. We talk to Crook and Bunn about the gorgeous watercolors and heavy psychodrama they use to bring the story to life. “Harrow County” was nominated for an Eisner award for Best New Series, and it’s been optioned for development as a TV series on Syfy Channel.Comic City USA - 38:09Oregon’s comic book community is part of a much wider mosaic of creative work — animation, political cartooning, comic strips. Think Out Loud recently talked to some of the minds behind the Oregon Historical Society’s new exhibition covering artists in all these disciplines, Comic City USA. We hear from long-time creators on the Portland scene Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett and OHS curator Lori Erickson. You can hear the entire conversation here.Good Guys Win: Ibrahim Moustafa - 43:08We listen back to our February interview with artist Ibrahim Moustafa. He’s racking up a string of solid titles, including his widely-read Himalayan thriller, “High Crimes”, with Chris Sebela. He also shares some news about his brand-new series for Stela Comics — a spy thriller called “Jaeger”, about a French-Algerian agent hunting down Nazis in a post-World-War-II setting. Stella series are designed specifically for smart phones, which posed new kinds of challenges.
The 2016 Eisner nominations were just announced and several have rightfully gone to the creative team of the exceptionally charming "Bandette", artist Colleen Coover and writer Paul Tobin. They both take the time to talk to Wendi about the thrilling fun and whimsy of "Bandette" and how to create such a unique and timeless take on their interpretation of Paris. They discuss what makes a good heist story, their European comic influences, the endearing nature of Audrey Hepburn, as well as their previous collaboration "Gingerbread Girl" and Tobin's work on such comics as "Colder" and "Plants vs. Zombies".
Colleen Coover (@colleencoover) and Paul Tobin (@paultobin) join the show to talk about their award-winning comic Bandette, its origins and influences. We also talk about all-ages comics and their work on them, past work including Batman '66, Marvel Adventures and I Was the Cat. We also talk about Paul's forthcoming novel, How to Catch an Invisible Cat, out March 1. Then we talk soccer, including the MLS Champion Portland Timbers and NWSL Portland Thorns, Barcelona vs Real Madrid, the pantomime behavior of Jose Mourinho and the dilemma of liking players on teams you can't stand. In the second segment, Mark reviews two new Marvel titles: Illuminati by Josh Williamson Williamson__Josn) and Shawn Crystal (@shawncrystal) and The Vision by Tom King (@TomKIngTK) and Gabriel Hernandez Walta (@ghwalta).
Our intrepid hosts are joined by the delightful Colleen Coover to talk growing up comics, winning an Eisner, and her wonderful comic "Bandette."

I was honored to host this spotlight panel focusing on the careers of Kathryn and Stuart Immonen from their beginnings in the late 1980's black and white independent comics scene in Toronto. We talk about their first joint project Playground a punk rock murder mystery , and subsequent work for Vortex Calibre and Revolutionary Comics .They also go in-depth about their new graphic novel Moving Pictures from Top Shelf, which collects the entire story that was first presented as a weekly web comic. Kathryn promises more Patsy Walker/Hellcat in the near future. Stuart also discusses the prospects of more Nextwave from himself and Warren Ellis, and his current work on New Avengers with Brian Bendis.
We're back from our Labor Day break with artist and writer Colleen Coover. Our topic is "All Ages," as we talk to Colleen about writing for both younger and older audiences, ranging from the younger themed Banana Sunday to her more adult-oriented title Small Favors. We also talk about how our habits of comic buying and reading have changed since childhood, and have a long, detailed discussion about what it's like working for Marvel, the distinctive traits of a monkey, and the concept of new jack swing. Also, a special guest stops by to address a hater.
