We have a returning guest this morning, Dana Murray, Environmental Sustainability Manager for the City of Manhattan Beach. Dana leads environmental sustainability policies and programs for the city, including climate resiliency, coastal adaptation planning, reducing plastic pollution, expanding the green business program, native habitat restoration, and climate change mitigation. Dana represents the City of Manhattan Beach as an Alternate on the Board of Directors for the Clean Power Alliance of Southern California, and is a member of Green Cities California and the Urban Sustainability Directors Network. Dana was formerly the Senior Marine Scientist and Coastal Policy Manager at Heal the Bay where she worked on science and policy issues related to coastal habitats and marine wildlife in California. She developed Los Angeles' MPA Watch citizen science monitoring program, assessing how people use L.A.'s underwater parks, and served as the Co-Chair of the Los Angeles Marine Protected Areas Collaborative. We will talk about the history of Sloopy's, how Peter Kim and the restaurant have adapted during the pandemic and doing business in the North End of Manhattan Beach. It certainly has different offerings and its own personality up there. Sloopy's has been around since 1967, the name per se. It was originally called the Hamburger Shack when it was established in 1950 by the original owner, Mary Brown. In 1964, the Lucas family purchased it, and renamed it Sloopy's in 1967. My wife and I purchased Sloopy's in November of 1989, so we've owned it for over 30 years. Peter Kim was in finance/investment banking until his wife got sick in 2009, from there on I have been running it. My wife, Helen Kim, is fine now to the point where she's been helping me as well as my grown kids who work a primary job. Both of us grew up in LA. Peter in Glendale, and Helen in Van Nuys. Peter went to school at UC San Diego. His kids are grown. Son is working at Oracle corp. The oldest daughter is also at Oracle. And my youngest daughter is a Senior at the University of Michigan. Stephanie opened The Waste Less Shop in Manhattan Beach in November 2019 in an effort to help her community reduce waste from their households outward. She realized that accessibility and advocacy is a crucial step in creating a greener future and opened the shop to help empower others to take action in their daily lives. Customers can shop online or visit the store to purchase plastic-free household goods and even bring their own containers to refill products like laundry detergent and shampoo in bulk. Before being elected Co-President, she had held many chair and board positions, but her favorite role was always working with the Holiday Homes Tour team, where she held the positions of Facilitator, Event Co-Chair for 3 years, and Director. Ashley's years of experience helped take the vision of a virtual tour and make it a reality. As Co-President, it is her hope that the Sandpipers' organization continues to grow and increase their philanthropic and community outreach programs to make the South Bay a better place for everyone. Our guest this morning is Attorney Mana Bolourchi. Mana has been practicing law for over 15 years. Her practice includes a focus on commercial real estate transactions. She frequently represents landlords and also represents tenants in commercial leasing transactions. Much of her work includes leasing of office and industrial space. She also handles some retail space leasing. Mana's practice also includes some general business matters. Her clients range from large organizations and other entities with asset and property managers as well as smaller businesses and individuals. She is a partner at Laquer, Urban, Clifford and Hodge LLP. Mana graduated high school in 3 years, received her BA from UC Berkeley and her JD/MBA from Pepperdine University. She grew up in the Bay Area and has lived in Manhattan Beach since the late 1990s/early 2000s. Mana primarily works from her home office in Manhattan Beach and is a big advocate for supporting local businesses in Manhattan Beach. In her spare time, Mana maintains an active lifestyle, including running, strength training and beach volleyball. She also (attempts) to surf on occasion. We have a returning guest this morning, Dana Murray, Environmental Sustainability Manager for the City of Manhattan Beach. Dana leads environmental sustainability policies and programs for the city, including climate resiliency, coastal adaptation planning, reducing plastic pollution, expanding the green business program, native habitat restoration, and climate change mitigation. Dana represents the City of Manhattan Beach as an Alternate on the Board of Directors for the Clean Power Alliance of Southern California, and is a member of Green Cities California and the Urban Sustainability Directors Network. Dana was formerly the Senior Marine Scientist and Coastal Policy Manager at Heal the Bay where she worked on science and policy issues related to coastal habitats and marine wildlife in California. She developed Los Angeles' MPA Watch citizen science monitoring program, assessing how people use L.A.'s underwater parks, and served as the Co-Chair of the Los Angeles Marine Protected Areas Collaborative. Our guest this morning is Manhattan Beach resident and artist, Kathleen Keifer. Having grown up in Chicago, Kathleen fell in love with California when she moved to Malibu in 1996. Primarily a “colorist,” there is a consistent point of view across her contemporary landscapes, pop art, and figurative work. She began painting at a young age and studied art at the University of Notre Dame and the Art Institute of Chicago. Her entrance into the fine art world in 1996 was a sold-out solo show at McLean Gallery in Malibu. Her next ten Malibu exhibitions launched her into the LA art world, with paintings featured in LACMA and MoMA. In her most recent work, she has arrived at a distinctive style of overlapping colors and textures that was described by LA magazine as “fluidly capturing pop culture in a tapestry of layered color.” Kathleen was recently selected by WS Games/Hasbro to create a limited edition, collectible, Monopoly Game focused on California called ”California Dreaming”. The game was released last week and each and every aspect of the game features Kathleen's original art. Our guest this morning is Altaf Amlani, owner of Blue Diamond Jeweler. Altaf grew up in Uganda and Kenya, received his education in England and came to the US at the age of 18. He is a third-generation jeweler. His father opened their jewelry business in the United States in 1974 where Altaf worked alongside his father together and learned the business. At that time, they were a strictly wholesale business. He enjoyed meeting with store owners and their customers and started to realize he enjoyed working directly with the public. Eventually, Altaf took over the business and made improvements, one of which was selling their jewelry to the public. Today, Blue Diamond Jeweler has a five star rating and has consistently been voted number one jeweler on the west side. This year included! They sell fine jewelry with a focus on custom engagement rings. Having their own manufacturing site, they create the beautiful pieces you see in their stores. Their focus is to create an everlasting bond with our customers.
