We were joined this week by former San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin (3:55-53:40). We discussed how his childhood experiences led him to become a public defender and then to launch a longshot bid to become the District Attorney of San Francisco, his historic election and becoming one of the faces of progressive prosecution in the country, the politics behind his eventual recall from that position, and the current state of progressive prosecution in the U.S.

Former San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin on Meaningful Reform of Our Criminal Justice System

In Part Two of my conversation with Chesa Boudin, we explore how his experiences as a child have informed his approach to criminal justice, and his efforts to seek reforms to how we engage with both the accused and the victims of crime. We also discuss the importance of communicating – both providing data and sharing stories – to help people understand context and demand policies that keep us all safer. And we touch on the challenges of actually implementing change in the face of the status quo. Chesa Boudin is former San Francisco DA and now founding executive director of the newly created Criminal Law & Justice Center at UC Berkeley School of Law.

Why was San Francisco reformist District Attorney Chesa Boudin recalled? Who was really behind it? What does it mean for the future of the reformist DA movement? And what's next for Chesa? We ask Chesa himself. District Attorney Chesa Boudin was sworn in as San Francisco District Attorney in January 2020 to implement urgently needed reforms to our criminal justice system. Chesa personally understands the impact of incarceration; both of his parents were incarcerated throughout his childhood. Despite tremendous obstacles, Chesa graduated from top schools, became a lawyer, and dedicated his career to public service. Chesa's personal experience with parental incarceration inspired him to dedicate his career to making our country safer and more just by working to reform our criminal justice system. Chesa is a Rhodes Scholar who graduated from Yale Law School. After obtaining his law degree, he worked as a law clerk to the Honorable M. Margaret McKeown of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and later for the Honorable Charles Breyer of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. As an attorney, Chesa has litigated more than 300 felony cases including murder, attempted murders, shootings, stabbings, home break-ins, drug sales, kidnappings, and auto burglaries. Under Chesa's leadership, the San Francisco District Attorney's Office has increased its prosecution rates; expanded victim services; and added new prosecution units, all while making investments to reduce recidivism and redirect towards education and employment. Chesa believes we must hold accountable those who violate the law; and he also recognizes that we are all safer when we can and address the root causes of crime to prevent crime before it happens. District Attorney Boudin's innovative work has focused on three main areas: 1) centering and increasing support for crime victims and survivors; 2) ensuring equal justice under the law; 3) developing new programs and reforms to ensure a more fair and just criminal legal system. Chesa, his wife, and their newborn son live in the Sunset District of San Francisco. A fourth-generation dairy farmer fears that possible climate initiatives could threaten independent farmers and their ability to provide for the U.S. food supply. The new district attorney in San Francisco announced Wednesday a new policy revoking plea offers for drug crimes made under ousted DA Chesa Boudin in an effort to crack down on rampant fentanyl dealing happening in the liberal city's notorious homeless camps as well as just steps away from schools. More than 80% of pistol-packing perps were put back on the streets after getting busted for gun possession in New York City this year, Mayor Eric Adams said. The first grain ship to leave Ukraine and cross the Black Sea under a wartime deal passed inspection Wednesday in Istanbul and headed on to Lebanon. Ukraine said 17 other vessels were “loaded and waiting permission to leave,” but there was no word yet on when they could depart. It's become a familiar scene at public meetings in California and across the nation — speakers or members of the public who, determined to have their voices heard, wind up disrupting public meetings.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

San Francisco, which has seen a decades-long exodus of Black residents, now has a Black mayor, police chief, district attorney and president of the Board of Supervisors. Yet Chronicle columnist Justin Phillips says that the city's Black residents are not well represented in meaningful ways. He explains in a conversation with host Demian Bulwa that Black politicians must navigate a political structure that wasn't created for them to succeed. And he argues that moves toward more moderate or conservative policies, such as arresting street drug users and replacing DA Chesa Boudin with Brooke Jenkins, stand to perpetuate long-standing inequities. | Unlimited Chronicle access: sfchronicle.com/pod Learn more about your ad choices. How Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg could get removed from office Embattled Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is facing mounting calls to be ousted — especially in the wake of his soft-on-crime counterpart DA Chesa Boudin getting bounced from his job. But unlike the recall vote against Boudin in San Francisco, which saw 60% of fed-up voters rejecting his progressive politics, the power of removing a district attorney in New York falls to the governor. “If the governor has information that [a] district attorney is not properly fulfilling his or her duties, she then can request that an investigation be conducted,”... Hi Gang:  Happy Friday! This evening we will consider my two most recent articles. FrontPage Magazine published my latest article on June 8, 2022:Sanctuary Cities Now Provide Sanctuary For Deadly Illegal Drugs- The NYC Health Dept. shows how to use them “safely” and on June 6, 2022 US Incorporated published my article: Biden Seeks End to Title 42 While Closing Federal Training Center Because of COVID. We will also consider the June 8, 2022 Associated Press article: San Francisco ousts liberal DA Chesa Boudin in heated recall. Violent crimes have surged across America, particularly in cities controlled by the Radical Left.  While there have been calls for gun control however, we need to gain control over criminals and that begins with effective law enforcement. It has never been more important that we truly learn how to speak with our fellow Americans in non-confrontational but in fact-based effective and persuasive ways.  Immigration is one issue that should unite all Americans- if all of the facts were made known. Please read my articles. All across the country today we have primaries - including in California. But the one thing I am following the most today is Prop H in San Francisco, where billionaires, conservatives, and corrupt tech leaders have banded together, and donated millions of dollars, to stop San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin. It's a waste and an abomination that it has even gotten this far. Not only is Chesa a brilliant DA, he's a good, ethical, moral human being. Conservative Californian's continue to abuse the recall system when they can't win in the general elections. It's a waste of time and money. If you are in San Francisco, or know somebody who is, PLEASE encourage them to vote NO on Prop H to stop the recall of Chesa Boudin.

On June 7, 2022, San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin will face a recall vote. The campaign to remove him from office is backed by wealthy donors and has strong support from different communities, but it's not deeply rooted in fact. The basic premise for the recall: critics claim that crime is on the rise, and the DA's embrace of decarceration — a policy that seeks to reduce the number of people we send to jail — is directly to blame. However, in 2021, just 4.2% of the incidents that were reported to SFPD resulted in an arrest, and many residents grumble that the police are on a wildcat strike. To learn more about what's really driving this recall, I interviewed Boudin and Mission Local Managing Editor Joe Eskenazi.

This week on Everyday Injustice we are joined by Tinisch Hollins, Executive director of Californians for Safety and Justice. She's been an opponent of the San Francisco recall. Tinich Hollins said previously, “My position today against the recall is rooted in the belief that the failures of the criminal justice system, and even the failures of this current SFPD office do not begin or end with Chesa Boudin's leadership.” She said, “I support him because he has been responsive to the needs and the priorities that were set out by our community. Overreliance on the criminal legal system has had a disastrous impact specifically on the black community, not just in San Francisco, but throughout this country.” She said, “We need more than reliance on jail and policing to deal with the social issues that are underlying drivers of crime chase.” She added, “I do not recall a time where any other DA's offices were largely successful in any way, because we know the systems are broken and failing.” Listen as we discuss the problems of San Francisco and why in her view, removing Chesa Boudin is not the answer.

The murder of George Floyd has sparked a momentous, national wave of protests and calls for police reform. Activists across America and around the globe are now asking the same question: How can elected officials effectively respond to this moment? San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin was elected in 2019 on a platform of criminal justice reform, with the goals of ending mass incarceration and eliminating cash bail. He has responded to the social unrest by doubling down on his efforts to reduce racial disparity, as he understands that people of color are disproportionately affected by crime and police brutality. Elected during the historic 2018 midterms, Rep. Ayanna Pressley is a leader of the push for criminal justice reform in Congress. In late 2019, she introduced the People's Justice Guarantee, a radical reimagining of the American criminal legal system that would center the conversation of reform around the voices of the people most impacted by injustice in America. Join DA Boudin and Rep. Pressley at INFORUM and The Commonwealth Club, where they will discuss police accountability, their roles in the future of police reform and this pivotal time in American culture. San Francisco's newest top prosecutor Chesa Boudin first experienced the criminal justice system as a toddler, when his parents were convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. This transformative experience left an indelible mark on Boudin, who has dedicated much of his life to criminal justice reform. After graduating from Yale, becoming a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford and earning his J.D. from Yale Law School, Boudin began work at the San Francisco Public Defender's Office. While he handled over 300 felony cases, Boudin never prosecuted a single case, instead favoring to work directly with victims of crimes and families of prisoners. After a tightly contested race in 2019, Boudin emerged as DA-elect of San Francisco, where he hopes to make significant changes to a broken criminal justice system. With a focus on reducing mass incarceration and recidivism and increasing opportunities for restorative justice, Boudin is part of a larger trend of progressives appointed to top prosecutorial positions in cities that hope to end policies such as cash bail, the war on drugs and racial disparities in sentencing. I had the good fortune of interviewing San Francisco DA Candidate Chesa Boudin, right before the Nov 5th election. District Attorney for San Francisco is an incredibly powerful position (just ask Kamala Harris!) from which many lives will either be saved and given a second chance, or more bodies (black, white, brown) will continue to be fed into the carceral system. Moreover, if a truly progressive DA, like Chesa is elected it will allow him to enact policies (notably an end to cash bail) that will challenge the rest of America to emulate, exceed or at least consider what changes could be made to the US criminal justice system, that would focus less on CRIMINAL and more on justice. Chesa was kind enough to join the Arts of Travel Podcast to discuss his vision on how he wants to reform criminal justice; and willing to take tough questions. We discuss homelessness, mental health, the work of Ruth Wilson Gilmore (prison abolition), The work of Virginia Eubanks (predictive algorithms and tech), and activists like Standing Rock and J20 For more on Chesa, I highly recommend checking out his website (and if you're in San Fransisco, volunteering!) you can find that here: https://www.chesaboudin.com/ And for articles used to research this interview, I highly recommend: • https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/17/magazine/prison-abolition-ruth-wilson-gilmore.html • https://www.yalelawjournal.org/forum/the-punishment-bureaucracy • https://lausan.hk/2019/reading-guide-police-prison-abolition-hong-kong/ • https://theappeal.org/san-francisco-deputy-public-defender-chesa-boudin-announces-run-for-district-attorney/ PS: Its the position of Asia Art Tours that many DAs (such as Cy Vance, Eric Holder, Kamala Harris and others) , claim to be 'progressives' when they are anything but! We despise DA's like Vance, Holder and Harris, who will happily punish the weak but are terrified of prosecuting the powerful, and dare to call themselves "progressive". Though we support Boudin now, should he turn out to be a timid, milquetoast, DA, we will happily invite critics on to excoriate his record. For now he has our support... but we'll be watching to see if his words on the campaign trail, match his deeds if he makes it into office).
