In 2017, David Leavitt drove to the Northern Cheyenne reservation in Montana to adopt a baby girl. A few years later, during an interview with a documentary filmmaker, Leavitt, a wealthy Utah politician, told a startling story about how he went about getting physical custody of that child. He describes going to the tribe's president and offering to use his connections to broker an international sale of the tribe's buffalo. At the same time, he was asking the president for his blessing to adopt the child.That video eventually leaked to a local TV station, and the adoption became the subject of a federal investigation into bribery. To others, the adoption story seemed to run afoul of a federal law meant to protect Native children from being removed from their tribes' care in favor of non-Native families.  This week on Reveal, reporters Andrew Becker and Bernice Yeung dig into the story of this complicated and controversial adoption, how it circumvented the mission of the Indian Child Welfare Act, and why some of the baby's Native family and tribe were left feeling that a child was taken from them. This episode was produced in collaboration with the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. She attended BYU as an undergraduate in Economics and then went to J. Reuben Clark Law School. One the first day of law school Chelom met David Leavitt and they married after their first year of law school. Chelom practiced family and estate law for years and then returned to get her Master's degree in Marriage, Family, and Human Development. In 2010 Chelom was invited to be a Fulbright Fellow in Ukraine and teach in Schevshenko University in Kyiv. She also ran a research study in Ukraine on how religious and secular traditions were associated with couple and parent-child relationship well-being.Chelom Leavitt received her PhD from Penn State. She is an Assistant Professor at Brigham Young University. She studies healthy sexuality in committed relationships and focuses on how mindfulness during sex may be associated with positive outcomes for both men and women. Dr. Leavitt's work on sexual mindfulness included an intervention to teach couples how to be mindful during sexual experiences. This research taps into how the sexual experience is full of meaning, emotions, as well as physical sensations.Additionally, Dr. Leavitt's examines how women experience and contribute to sex differently than men–and that's great for both women and men! Sua obra principal é o romance Grande Sertão: veredas, uma obra prima da literatura universal. Muitas de suas obras foram ambientadas pelo sertão brasileiro, com ênfase nos temas nacionais, marcadas pelo regionalismo e mediadas por uma linguagem inovadora (invenções linguísticas, arcaísmo, palavras populares e neologismos). Sem dúvida um dos grandes da literatura brasileira.Eu não poderia deixar de lembrar do Grande Guimarães Rosa, mas o tema da nossa coluna desta semana é sobre outra pessoa muito importante. E eu começo, antes de falar dele, com uma pergunta: computadores podem pensar? Essa pergunta foi feita por aquele que é considerado o pai do computador, Alan Turing, que Neste domingo, dia 23 de junho comemorou-se seu aniversário de 107 anos de nascimento.Sim, vamos falar de ciência, afinal, a ciência também faz parte da cultura de um povo. Alan Mathison Turing foi um matemático, lógico, criptoanalista e cientista da computação britânico. Foi influente no desenvolvimento da ciência da computação e na formalização do conceito de algoritmo e computação com a máquina de Turing, desempenhando um papel importante na criação do computador moderno. Foi também pioneiro na inteligência artificial e na ciência da computação. Turing foi um dos primeiros a pensar na possibilidade de uma maquina se tornar inteligente e criou um modelo teórico para um computador universal, a máquina de Turing que já citei e é a base teórica do computador moderno além de todos os dispositivos computacionais como tablets, smartphones entre outros.Ele foi um dos responsáveis por descobrir o local exato onde as tropas nazistas estariam em 6 de junho de 1944 (descriptografado as mensagens alemãs), que culminou no desembarque de 155 mil soldados aliados na Normandia, fato que entrou para a história como Dia D já citado em uma coluna anterior. Ele fez isso participando do desenvolvimento de um computador eletromecânico, chamado de “Bombe” que conseguia descriptografar as mensagens cifradas pela máquina “Enigma” alemã que eram interceptadas mas eram incompreensíveis. Ajudou, portanto, os aliados a venceram a guerra de forma efetiva e crucial.Seu legado não se limita aí. Hoje ele dá nome a uma lei inglesa, criou o teste usado para testar a qualidade da inteligência artificial e tem contribuições importantes na biologia. Um verdadeiro gênio e polímata moderno!Turing foi um incrível matemático e seus estudos se tornaram base para a tecnologia atual. O matemático foi perseguido, humilhado em público e impedido de acompanhar estudos sobre computadores, por ser homossexual numa época que isso era considerado uma doença e também um crime na Inglaterra. Para não ser preso, foi obrigado a aceitar um tratamento com hormônios femininos (castração química), o que fez crescer seus seios e o levou a uma terrível depressão (e o ouvinte achando que a cura gay por hormônios é algo que loucos proferem hoje em dia).Depressivo, com crises de ansiedade e angustiado pelo tratamento humilhante recebido, mesmo sendo um herói de guerra, Turing se suicidou por envenenamento de cianeto, comendo uma maçã, semanas antes de seu aniversário de 42 anos.Infelizmente o mundo perdeu um de seus maiores gênios do século XX, cujos estudos alteraram (e ainda alteram) a maneira como o mundo se desenvolve. Em 10 de setembro de 2009, após uma campanha de internet, o primeiro-ministro britânico Gordon Brown fez um pedido oficial de desculpas público, em nome do governo britânico, devido à maneira pela qual Turing foi tratado após a guerra.Em 24 de dezembro de 2013, Alan Turing recebeu o perdão real da rainha Elizabeth II, da absurda condenação por homossexualidade. Se não fosse pelo preconceito tosco e atroz teríamos o gênio científico de Turing por muitos e muito anos a mais e ele teria contribuído bastante para a humanidade. I first met Glen David Gold when he was on a reading tour for his second novel, Sunnyside, which happened to be the name of the neighborhood where I lived at the time; that wasn't the only reason we hit it off, but we did, and so I was excited when I found out he was publishing a memoir, I Will Be Complete. I spoke to him in the summer of 2018 about his family history, how he'd tried to deal with it by writing fiction in his twenties, and the path toward eventually finding the right literary structure through which to tell the story. One of the first things I mentioned is how perfectly it illustrated that famous Philip Larkin verse about what your parents do, which eventually brought us to a discussion of how some relationships simply can't be fixed. We also talked about how working on I Will Be Complete has made Glen a more confident writer, and the newly honed skills he's been able to take back to his fiction. Plus the story of how David Leavitt became his literary archnemesis, until he actually went to a David Leavitt reading...

Michael Ferguson has written a fascinating book review of two recent biographies on the famous mathematician and cryptographer Alan Turing - who recently received a royal pardon following his prosecution for homosexuality in the 1950's.
