The San Francisco school district is in the middle of a financial reckoning, forced to reconcile a significant drop in student enrollment with years of delayed responses to the growing operational costs. This isn't just a San Francisco problem—it's a glaring example of the challenges facing large school districts nationwide. Today's conversation centers on the hard truth: there simply aren't enough students to support the district's bloated infrastructure, and drastic measures are needed to avoid insolvency. In this episode, we dive into the heart of the matter with Supryia Ray, a candidate for the San Francisco School Board and a passionate advocate for real reform. The voters' response has been clear—they want a board made up of citizens who will make the tough calls to rebalance the budget, build a professional and capable teaching corps, and, most importantly, prioritize the needs of the students. This is a conversation not just about San Francisco, but about the future of public education across the nation.
As a new school year kicks off, San Francisco Unified School District faces several big challenges including pending school closures set to be announced later this month. The district, with a budget of $1.3 billion for this fiscal year, has been overspending for years as enrollment has declined. With its financial reserves running dry, district leaders and school board members have to wrangle in spending to close a $420 million deficit or confront a state takeover. We'll talk to SFUSD Superintendent Matt Wayne and other experts about the district's financial problems, what could happen next, and take your questions. Guests: Jill Tucker, K-12 Education Reporter, San Francisco Chronicle Mark Sanchez, commissioner, San Francisco School Board of Education - San Francisco Unified School District Matt Wayne, superintendent, San Francisco Unified School District

One of the three San Francisco school board members appointed after this year's recall is already facing calls to resign. The member, Ann Hsu, made a racist statement in a candidate questionnaire ahead of November's election, saying that one of the biggest challenges for marginalized students, “especially in the Black and brown community,” was their “unstable family environments” and lack of family support and parental encouragement. Hsu has apologized, but her future is uncertain. Chronicle reporter Jill Tucker tells host Demian Bulwa why the controversy has touched many nerves in the a school system struggling with wide racial disparities in achievement. | Unlimited Chronicle access: sfchronicle.com/pod Learn more about your ad choices. Five months after city voters tossed out three school board members in a landslide recall, things have changed. The board, once lambasted for infighting and focusing on issues like renaming schools, is vowing to pivot back to a core issue — student performance. And the challenges are great, including disparities among racial groups and soaring absenteeism. Just 58% of students were deemed proficient in reading last year. Chronicle education reporter Jill Tucker tells host Demian Bulwa why members of the beleaguered board are also simply trying to learn how to do their jobs better. | Unlimited Chronicle access: sfchronicle.com/pod Learn more about your ad choices. Maria and Alice discuss the critical efforts underway by President Biden and our NATO allies to prevent war in Europe as Russian President Vladmir Putin threatens to invade Ukraine. And the debate continues over the recall election to oust three members of the San Francisco School Board. Parents are outraged over the lack of focus on re-opening schools in the COVID era. Plus - former President Donald Trump is facing more legal woes, what does this mean for the midterm elections and his decision to run in 2024? In this week's meaningful moment, Alice and Maria share words of understanding from Christine Miles, author of "What Is It Costing You Not to Listen?"
The San Francisco School Board has decided to delay the application process for picking a new superintendent until the end of March, following the recall of three board members, who will be out of office before then. The board of Supervisors voted to place a recall reform measure before voters this June and passed an ordinance allowing renters to set-up tenant unions with the same negotiating powers of labor unions. We'look ahead on the city calendar on proposals to allow easier police surveillance of events in real time and how much you pay for garbage collection.
While the Biden White House waits nervously to see if Russia invades Ukraine, perhaps in the next few days, the biggest political story this week that took place was as local as it gets. In San Francisco, where voters, by an overwhelming margin, recalled three school board members. Why? Incompetence and frustration to be sure over the board's decision to keep public schools shut down all last year over Covid even as schools elsewhere were opening. But perhaps even more the recall vote was a rejection of the board members progressive woke agenda. In the name of racial justice the board was looking to rename schools. Even those named after Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. It had ended merit based admission to one of the city's elite high schools because it lead to too many Asian-American students and not enough African-American and Hispanics getting in. That vote has been seen as a wake up call for Democrats when the eyes of some have too often embraced the progressive agenda that has alienated voters across the political spectrum. Washington Post columnist Matt Bai joins us to talk on why the woke agenda has alienated him and what the radical drift of both political parties could mean for the country's future. It might well be on its way to becoming the most widely read Torah commentary of our time—and by non-Jews as well as by Jews." — Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, bestselling author of Jewish Literacy Why do so many people think the Bible, the most influential book in world history, is outdated? Why do our friends and neighbors – and sometimes we ourselves – dismiss the Bible as irrelevant, irrational, immoral, or all of these things? This explanation of the Book of Exodus, the second book of the Bible, will demonstrate that the Bible is not only powerfully relevant to today's issues, but completely consistent with rational thought. Do you think the Bible permitted the trans-Atlantic slave trade? You won't after reading this book. Do you struggle to love your parents? If you do, you need this book. Do you doubt the existence of God because belief in God is “irrational?” This book will give you reason after reason to rethink your doubts. The title of this commentary is, “The Rational Bible” because its approach is entirely reason-based. The reader is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. As Prager says, “If something I write does not make rational sense, I have not done my job.” The Rational Bible is the fruit of Dennis Prager's forty years of teaching the Bible to people of every faith, and no faith. The City is actually suing the School Board to compel them to re-open the schools in compliance with State Law.
