Joining Big Lou in The Sports Lounge Today - Special Guest: Dave Dennis! Born and raised in Western Sydney, Dave Dennis is one of the most respected figures in NSW rugby history. Dennis was picked for the Australian school's side in 2004, the beginning of a long and decorated representative career. The lock/backrower made his Super Rugby debut for the Waratahs in 2007 and was a mainstay of the team for the better part of a decade beyond that. His form in Super Rugby earned him a Test debut in June 2012, with Dennis featuring against Scotland and going on to play 18 Tests over 18 months. He most recently played for the Wallabies against Wales in Cardiff in 2013. Dennis was appointed Waratahs captain in 2013 but poor fortune struck in the 2014 season with the much-loved NSW figure suffering a season-ending knee injury. That setback meant Dennis had to watch on as the Waratahs collected their first, and only to this point, Super Rugby championship. After 107 games for the Waratahs, Dennis moved to the UK at the end of the 2016 season. The forward found success in England, playing for the Chiefs in the Premiership. Exeter won the competition in his first season with the club and featured heavily in the European and English tournaments during his four seasons with the Premiership powerhouse. Dennis proved an inspiring signing to captain the Giltinis in their debut season. He set standards both as a durable, high-performing forward and as a fine leader of men. Its time for Wrestle Plug to get even dirtier and the only way to accomplish that is by welcoming Dave Dennis to the podcast! A frank and honest man with a frank and honest take on professional wrestling, Dave got into the business at a very late age but already finds himself deep in the ideals of loyalty, clashing schools and character vs technical performances. In our 152nd podcast we have an awesome interview with Waratahs Captain Dave Dennis and then go straight back to wanging on about the super rugby finals
We opened with a prerecorded interview with Nefertina Abrams, Royal House of Makeda Productions, and Melame Gange, ModeAfrika apparel, (first aired 7/2/2014) re: Ubuntu-Faqir Simunye or Pan African Love and Unity Festival on its concluding night, July 4, 2014, 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Humanist Hall on 27th Street, in Oakland. We open with Gange's “African Suns.” We then play a segment from an interview with Civil Rights Movement architect, Dave Dennis, who is just returning home from a successful 50th Anniversary Conference at Tougaloo College in Mississippi. The goal of the conference was to answer the following questions: What were the lessons learned? How do they apply to today's challenges? What is the next phrase? How will an appropriate response be developed for the next phase? While speaking to Mr. Dennis about the conference and current issues on the stove top boiling over presently like Voter's Rights and Educational Opportunity, especially for black youth as access to higher education still is not either the norm or representative of the majority of black families, Mr. Dennis the first in his family to graduate from high school. 50 years later, I meet students in my classroom who are the first to graduate from high school and college. Next steps obviously include access to college education and programs in place to address the attrition rate among black men. Ironically, the issues around voter's rights are expiring as state's reevaluate residents' rights and make certain residents ineligible or make voter registration difficult and access to the polls another hurdle in society where historic memory is a tragedy of youthful ignorance and social apathy. Music: selections from Meklit and Quinn and Melik Hadero; the Nile Project: Salaam Nubia from Aswan and Tezete; Melame Gange's African Suns and Dancing Partner.
