We need more representation of what women of color millionaires look like, women of color investors, hotel owners...it's so important to have that representation because I think that's the thing that makes a lot of people have that light bulb go off in their head, and they are like, okay - I could do this too. - Jannese Torres It gave me different perspectives as to why it's important to have residual income coming in. Because when the world hits sometimes it hits you hard. It comes fast and furious, sometimes in threes. - Jatali BellantonBeing a woman of your word and really understanding the importance of relationships have helped me throughout my career, and it's something I value very dearly. Today's guest has more than 14 years of experience in the lodging industry. She also has a passion for people and pineapples. Davonne Reaves is Founder/Hospitality Strategist at The Vonne Group. She is also the author of How To Buy A Hotel - Roadmap to Hotel Ownership. Davonne joins host Dan Ryan to talk about her journey in hospitality and what it all means to her. Takeaways: Owning a hotel requires a lot of work, you have to keep up with the land and raise capital and hire staff among many other things. When starting your own business, you want to start small and work your way up to becoming a bigger company. When looking at buying a hotel, you want to know the surrounding community and have them feel comfortable with you. People are what make the hospitality industry so special and unique, most people will stay at a hotel for the human connection and interaction. You need to know your purpose, if you don't have a clear purpose for your business that it will not last. Knowing how to invest the right money into the right places for buying a hotel can help you to financially be all set. There will always be people who don't believe in your dream or help you along the way, so it's important to have thick skin and move past it. Quote of the Show: 18:52 “You could automate the hospitality industry as much as you possibly can, it's the people, it's even some people who would prefer to stay in a hotel over an Airbnb, just because of the human connection and that human interaction.” Links: Twitter: https://twitter.com/thevonnegroup LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davonnereaves/ Website: https://thevonnegroup.com Book Link: https://www.amazon.com/TIDBITS-EMERGING-PINEAPPLE-PROFESSIONAL-DEQUAN/dp/1791966365 Shout Outs: 3:50 ACS 4:05 Hyatt 4:42 Jessica Meyers 31:30 Shannon Steel 31:45 Dr. Mina James 31:58 Andre Arbrieten 57:35 Skift 57:39 Highgate 57:41 JLL 58:43 Swiss Hotel Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419 Podbean: https://www.defininghospitality.live/ Youtube : https://youtu.be/ZLMSqY07U2Q

How does the average person come to own a hotel? Did you know that 50% of the motels in the US as owned by Indian Americans? As a 33-year-old, today's guest purchased a Hilton hotel. Until I met Davonne Reaves, I had never thought of purchasing a hotel as a business or even as an investment.
This episode with Jessica Myers was powerful! The turning point for Jessica was when she got her 5-year plaque to recognize her years of service at her job. She also noticed someone receiving a 20 year plaque at the same job. At that moment, she decided that chasing a 20-year plaque was not the path she wanted to pursue. It was perfect timing because she attended a real estate conference shortly after where she learned about wholesaling. Starting out as a wholesaler allowed her to develop her ability to find and analyze deals. With the help of a mentor, she was able to close her first four deals. Starting off with wholesaling allowed her to build up the next egg that helped her to leave her job. From there she got into AirBnb rentals, revitalizing communities in Brunswick, Georgia, additional real estate investments and more. Next on Jessica's goal list was hotel ownership. She reconnected with her friend, Davonne Reaves and decided to pursue their goal of hotel ownership. Their firm closed on a $8.3 million dollar hotel in El Reno, Oklahoma which is two hours away from Tulsa, Oklahoma. In this episode, we discuss hotel ownership, getting started in real estate, future plans and more. How to find herIG- @itsjessicamyersHighlights1) Never give a contractor all of the money for a job upfront. The annual employee turnover rate in the U.S. hospitality industry is 70 percent. When compared with 10 to 25 percent at other industries, the rate at which people leave hospitality jobs is at a “disastrous level,” said one of the experts we interviewed about recruiting and retaining employees. In this episode of Lodging Leaders, we report exclusive data on retention and turnover rates. Guests also offer practical solutions to the problem, including better managing labor costs to be able to give employees a pay raise. Overall, the experts agree that creating awareness about the opportunities to build a meaningful career should be the central strategy to recruiting and retaining employees. We feature Ron Mitchell CEO of Virgil Holdings, which owns Hcareers, a recruitment website; Del Ross, chief revenue officer at Hotel Effectiveness, which helps hotels manage labor costs; Davonne Reaves, CEO of The Vonne Group, a hospitality consulting firm; and Sarah Smart, vice president of global recruitment at Hilton Worldwide.
