Episode 700 is a milestone — and Jimmy and Tyler marked it by getting off their chairs and going on location. They recorded this one inside an airplane hangar at TK1’s facility in the Lincoln, CA, sitting down with Garrett to finally get the full story on a company they’ve been recommending for years. Most SnailTrail listeners know TK1 for one thing: sway bars. But the real story is wilder than that. TK1’s founder Tony didn’t start in aerospace — he started in off-road racing, building tube chassis under the Rocky Equipment name. After the 2008 crash hit the racing industry hard, the business pivoted. A bush plane owner who’d tried mounting Fox off-road shocks to his aircraft got denied by Fox over liability concerns — so he called Tony. That conversation launched what would become TK1’s aerospace division. Today, TK1 does everything from billet aluminum sway bars to aviation landing gear shocks to titanium components — all machined in-house, all in Sacramento. Garrett walks Tyler and Jimmy through what actually makes TK1’s sway bars different: every bar is custom-spec’d for your vehicle, your suspension setup, your use case, and your goals. The conversation gets technical — how diameter and arm length affect torsion rate, how sway bars interact with front-end articulation, why a stiffer rear bar can actually free up your front axle, and how TK1’s pneumatic adjustable sway bar concept would let a King of the Hammers racer change stiffness between the desert lap and the rock section. Tyler shares his own hard-won lesson after a spine block came loose on Kermit and he suddenly understood — from behind the wheel — what sway bars actually do. Jimmy walks Garrett through Samantha’s build specs to start the process of ordering her sway bar. His setup — a custom link rear, T100 axle, and goals still being dialed in — highlights exactly the kind of conversation TK1 has with every customer before they cut metal. This week, Jimmy and Tyler catch up on two very different 4Runner projects — and somehow both of them involve things that were bent, broken, or seized in ways nobody’s seen before. Jimmy’s 4Runner “Samantha” is making progress. He spent the week fabricating temporary shock towers out of scrap steel, getting the shocks roughly mounted, and articulating the suspension to figure out how much travel he’s actually working with. The verdict: he needs to raise the shocks about a half inch, the bump stops are in the right ballpark, and the Panhard bar collision he was worried about looks like it won’t be an issue once the setup is dialed. He also talks through the surprisingly useful difference between working with metal vs. wood — and why metal scrap is genuinely hard to throw away. Tyler’s 4Runner “The Mule” went to Jason at OCD Innovations for a full teardown, and what they found was wild. The pinion bearing had seized and welded itself to the housing — which is what caused the axle lockup and the subsequent catastrophic failure. The good news: the Mile Marker hubs actually survived and held. The not-so-good news: basically everything else needed replacing — lower links (bent aluminum), upper link bracket, CV joints (Metal Cloak), steering kit (Sidetrack Off Road), DOM tubing for the track link and Panhard bar, and a driveshaft joint that exploded and saved the front diff case in the process. The one remaining unknown is the rear diff. Jason is being thorough — almost comically so — and the mule is back on four wheels, running under its own power. Registration still has to happen, which means blinkers, safety inspection, and a Switch-Pros wiring job are all still on the list. They also get into a deep conversation on lithium battery setups — starter battery vs. auxiliary battery, how alternators interact with lithium BMS shutoffs, and why Tyler is landing on a Dakota Lithium battery with a DC charger as his power management strategy. Off the trail: Jimmy went and saw *Project Hail Mary* in theaters and loved it (verdict: great home watch, doesn’t require the big screen). He ran a 10K at the Run Rockland event and surprised himself with a 9:45/mile average. And both Jimmy and Tyler took a moment to geek out over the Big Boy steam locomotive #4014 rolling through Roseville — 1.2 million pounds, 133 feet long, 7,000 horsepower, and apparently enough to stop traffic and make kids forget trains exist in favor of radio towers. Recently, I read an interview with an author who talked about how much children loved her book and how they tell her this. It annoyed me. It may have been good marketing, but it sure didn't feel like good human-ing, you know? When you're interviewed by a reporter or when you do a school visit, as a children's book author, you have the ability to toot your own horn or you have the ability to toot someone else's. This interview I read sort of sent me into a spiral of ick. So, lately I've been thinking a lot about how to get more of my very long work day to not feel like work and how to make consistently enough money writing things to keep the family afloat. Monday, on the blog, we talked about the Zone of Genius, a phrase I kind of hate and also the Flow State, which I'm much more into. This is just about places where work feels good, where it feels right. What doesn't feel right to me is tooting my own horn. And here on the podcast, I thought about how all this is really overcomplicating things. I am a fan of over complications, right, Shaun? But life and happiness is really all about doing what you love. It's about going for that and seeing what happens if you put the time in. Not about shouting "LOOK AT ME! I AM SUCCESSFUL!" Unless that's what give you joy. It's about doing what you love but also taking the steps to learn more and more about what you love, about listening to other people, about helping other people and also helping yourself by learning. The best writers see outside themselves and into the lives and emotions, the yearnings, the obstructions, the needs and conflicts of others. The best storytellers know that stories aren't about just them. Writers can do this. You've got to put in the time and go after your dream. You've got to stop worrying about the market and your niche and do the things that put you in that flow state, the things that give you joy. You just have to start. If you love writing, write. Share it. That's it. But please don't be an egotistical ass about it. It's okay to communicate and focus on people who aren't yourself, even if you're an artist. Make it a habit to write and make it a habit to share what you write. And ask people to follow you wherever you are (substack, word press, x, medium, whatever). It's okay to ask. Don't constantly ask. Don't only ask, but it's okay to write and make money at it. Recently, I've been on a bit of a Tim Denning kick, he's a writer and blogger. And he has an interesting bit about the habits of quiet winners. He writes about how they don't do media, don't flaunt their success, make fun of themselves, give credit to others. It's pretty interesting to me because it's how I was raised and it's also like that Lori McKenna song Tim McGraw sang, "Humble and Kind." But one of the coolest bits in his blog is this: "Doing their work is what they like doing, not being noticed for doing their work. The meaning from their work cuts so deep that if a loud human being understood it they would give up their life and start again." Our random thought came from here. THIS CREATOR ON YOUTUBE MADE A VIDEO CRITICIZING #OBRA FOR SEVERAL THINGS. Sorry about that all caps thing. I think rightly, he called her out on her two cozy friendship with hashtag harveywinestein, who turned out to be basically a serial rapist in Hollywood;n but he also attacks the iconic feel good talk show host for not supporting hashtag Michael jackson, when he was going through some court cases involving his #pedophilia type activities with young boys. Oops sorry, belated trigger warning. :-( third, He suggests that over school for girls leadership in South Africa was involved in sex trafficking, without offering any proof of that whatsoever. Taken altogether, this particular YouTube show seems to me to be part of a smear campaign against oprah. With theaters across the world closed and movies sitting on shelves, movie studios like Universal, Sony, and Disney have each taken their own approach to navigating the new world order.
