Published to coincide with the poet's 85th birthday, Ash Keys (Jonathan Cape) presents a new selection of Longley's finest works. Born in Belfast in 1939, his verse inhabits the landscapes Ireland's west, at the same time occupying a space within a distinctly European tradition, ranging freely across the continent's histories, tragedies and triumphs. 'One of the most perfect poets alive,' writes Sebastian Barry. ‘There is something in his work both ancient and modern. I read him as I might check the sky for stars.'Michael Longley was joined for this reading and discussion by fellow poet Declan Ryan, whose most recent collection Crisis Actor is published by Faber.Get the book: https://lrb.me/ashkeyspodFind more events at the Bookshop: https://lrb.m/eventspod Hosted on Acast. Welcome back to The Vertical Space for a discussion with Declan Ryan, one of the co-founders of Ryanair and a serial builder of low-cost airlines. With commercial drone operations starting to gain momentum and the contours of future eVTOL operations becoming better understood, it is important to highlight the evolution of the low-cost airline business model and learn the lessons from this market. And we have just the right guest to take a deep dive into this fascinating topic.Dec takes us to the early days of Ryanair: how they viewed the market opportunity, how they chose to compete with legacy airlines, the strategic choices and early pivots, the mistakes along the way…and some very funny moments including negotiating an acquisition with British Airways. More broadly though, we discuss how low-cost airlines make money in a highly commoditized environment, the revenue opportunities, ways to remove cost from operations, and the role of technology in the relentless pursuit of operational excellence.Dec has been in the industry for a long time and what you'll hear from him is a sober, unfiltered view of the challenges and opportunities that the airline industry is facing, both today and in the near future. Throughout the conversation, we make references to AAM and ways in which the lessons learned in the low-cost airline business might inform eVTOL operations and drone operations at scale. There are many lessons that the AAM industry should embrace, mistakes it should not repeat, and Dec highlights those backing them up with personal experience starting, running, or being involved in a number of airlines around the world. We discuss many other topics such as decarbonizing aviation, supersonic air travel, how startups should pitch airline customers, advice to entrepreneurs, and much more.
In this episode of The EY Podcast: CEO Outlook Series, Deirdre Mortell, CEO of Rethink Ireland, joins host Richard Curran to talk about her passion for social change, the power of people to make positive impact, her vision for a better Ireland, and how this role is helping her to achieve it.From an early age, Deirdre Mortell wanted to ‘change the world'. A very active participant in student politics, Mortell left UCC with a Masters in Women's Studies but with no clear sense of what came next and “sort of fell into the non-profit sector and particularly into fundraising”. Today, she leads one of Ireland's largest social innovation funds, with almost €100m raised and 400 innovations backed.Rethink Ireland was created by the Irish government following the last economic crash with the aim of restimulating philanthropy during the recession. Having built high-performance teams for non-profits such as Oxfam, Barnardos and Headstrong, and co-founding The One Foundation with Declan Ryan, Mortell was appointed CEO of Rethink in 2014. Her mission is not just to fund the organisations tackling Ireland's critical social issues, it's also to transform the entire culture of fundraising and philanthropy in Ireland. They also discuss:· The most common “demoralising” myths about the non-profit sector· The culture of philanthropy in Ireland (‘D' grade, must try harder) and how Rethink Ireland is helping to improve it· Mortell's experience in student politics and setting up the political party, The Women's Alliance· Creating The One Foundation with Declan Ryan and what they managed to achieve in 10 years.· Rethink Ireland's manifesto 2030 – a vision for the Ireland we want to live in

Over the last 30 years Declan Ryan has been involved with creating multiple low cost airlines around the world. From Ryanair to Viva Aerobus, Tiger Airways in Singapore, Allegiant Air in the US, his instinct and ability in both investment and business are beyond doubt. In the first episode of this new series looking into Ireland's impact on the world of aviation, comedian Jarlath Regan meets the quiet Tipperary man who prefers to stay in the background. In many ways he exemplifies the quiet dominance of the aviation industry by the Irish. It doesn't stop at CEOs of the major airlines across the world - it extends to central control of the industry, governing bodies, regulators, ground staff, manufacturing and the airports themselves. The Irish own respect in the business and across this series of podcast interviews, you will learn why. To contact the show email irishmanabroadpodcast@gmail.com. A year into the Covid-19 era, the publisher Shearsman Books is putting out a new title, Poetry and Covid 19 – An Anthology of Contemporary International and Collaborative Poetry. It's edited by Anthony Caleshu and Rory Waterman, the idea being to pair 19 UK-based poets with poets from around the world to work on poems together. Between them, the writers reside in all of the world's permanently populated continents, recognising that the pandemic has truly hit us everywhere.' We have not one but two podcasts based on the book coming up, this month's and we'll put out another next month. The contributors to this podcast are Rory Waterman, who'll chair proceedings, a poet from Nottingham who has three collections published by Carcanet. Linda Stern Zisquit is an American-born Israeli poet and translator. And finally Declan Ryan, who was born in County Mayo, and who has lived mainly in London. His first pamphlet was published in the Faber New Poets series.

Once in the air, we learn how it was far from an easy ride to keep Viva flying high but — the pandemic notwithstanding — the company now seems to be cruising, with the doyen of low-cost carriers, Ireland's Declan Ryan (see https://anchor.fm/brendan-corrigan/episodes/Declan-Ryan-Viva-Air-is-in-a-good-position--unlike-Avianca-ednc73), playing a major role in that. *Thanks to Viva Air, we have a free flight to give away. This weekend all eyes were on the small ball with the Senior Hurling final between Carrick Hurling and Cluainín Iomaint of Manorhamilton on Saturday afternoon. Carrick Hurling secured their 33rd county senior title with a 1-20 to 0-21 win after extra time and Breifne Earley caught up with their coach Olcan Conway, captain Cathal McCrann, goalscorer Stephen Goldrick and man of the match James Glancy after their victory. Cluainín's Declan Ryan shared his disappointment after they probably edged the encounter but ending up on the losing side. Sean O'Heslins Ballinamore slipped up in their bid to secure a league final place when despite a number of scorable chances late in the game they were unable to close a single point gap to get the draw they needed to reach the final. Mohill, their opponents yesterday will now face St. Mary's Kiltoghert in the league final next Saturday afternoon in Avantcard Pairc Sean MacDiarmada. Breifne spoke to Shane Quinn & Liam Keenan from Mohill as well as Keelan McHugh of Sean O'Heslins after the game. Niall Morahan and Sligo Rovers were on the losing side of a 2-1 scoreline against high flying Derry City in the Showgrounds on Saturday evening for the last home fixture of this season. Rovers took the lead early in the encounter but were unable to hold on to their lead and eventually lost out by the odd goal in three. Both Glencar / Manor and Carrick Town recorded 4-3 victories in the Sligo / Leitrim & District League over the weekend while local referee Emma Cleary has been selected to act as 4th official for the Women's Senior FAI Cup Final in which Dearbhaile Beirne will feature for Peamount United. In what was a disappointing weekend for Rugby, Matthew Earley was unable to prevent his Sligo Rugby side slipping to a 20-15 defeat to Wanderers in Dublin on Saturday in Division 2B of the All Ireland League.
As one of the founders of Ryanair and multiple airlines across the globe, Declan Ryan is one of the most influential people in the aviation industry. Not one for the limelight, Declan gave Jarlath a rare interview this week to discuss his life, career and why Irish people tend to dominate the business of flying. Declan explains why he never wanted Ryanair to be called 'Ryanair' (5:00), the dirty tricks of Aer Lingus who ran out of money trying to 'kill' them (36:00) while also telling some toe-curling stories about the challenges of recruitment (Patreon Full Length Version Only). From why he thinks it was a huge mistake to not sell Ryanair to Aer Lingus (46:00), to why the Irish soar to new heights in aviation (25:00), his hilarious recollection of the dreaded weekly meetings with Michael O'Leary and his father (17:00) and much more, this is a one off conversation with a true great of Irish business.
