Dito Montiel went from punk rocker to briefly a boxer, then a Versace/Calvin Klein model. His band Gutterboy signed a record deal with Geffen, followed by a period of homelessness. He rebounded by writing A GUIDE TO RECOGNIZING YOUR SAINTS, which became a film starring Robert Downey Jr., launching his directing career. His latest film, RIFF RAFF, follows a former criminal whose ordinary life is turned upside down when his old family shows up for a long-awaited reunion. In this interview, we talk about his approach to writing, working with actors, the importance of writing strong characters even for smaller roles, and his new film RIFF RAFF. Want more? It's a fun episode of BEHIND THE LENS as writer/director TIFFANY KIM STEVENS joins me in discussing her new quirky comedy TRIGGER HAPPY, plus my exclusive interview with director DITO MONTIEL talking about his latest dysfunctional family comedy RIFF RAFF. First up is my exclusive interview with director DITO MONTIEL talking the brilliantly conceived RIFF RAFF. Boasting an A-list cast led by Jennifer Coolidge and Ed Harris, along with Gabrielle Union, Lewis Pullman, Miles J. Harvey, with Pete Davidson and Bill Murray, RIFF RAFF is laugh-out-loud chaos with a wife, an ex-wife, a disowned son with a pregnant girlfriend, an innocent teen on the cusp of college, and a couple of gangsters named Leftie and Lonnie coming for them all. Needless to say, Leftie and Lonnie are played by Murray and Davidson, respectively. Listen as we break down the film and Dito's creative process covering everything from casting and character development to storyboards to cinematography to editing, as well as the film's kinetic energy and strong ensemble performances. Then I'm joined by writer/director TIFFANY KIM STEVENS talking about her outrageously fun and quirky comedic TRIGGER HAPPY; the tale of poor George Decker who dreams of escaping his boring and humdrum life and escaping to the Bahamas. But to do so means getting rid of his wife, crushing debt, his 9-to-6 job, and everything else that he believes has held him back and prevented his true bliss. A clever story that melds decades to create a timeless feel, Tiffany and I discuss character, story, production design, color palette, editing, and more. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Dito Montiel's upbringing in Astoria was filled with so many unique characters which affected him on a lot of different levels. His memoir, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, is a collage of these visceral experiences and how they shaped how he sees the world through music, writing and film. He wrote and directed the seminal film adaptation of his novel which won the Dramatic Directing Award at Sundance and received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Screenplay. Since then, his directorial efforts and ensuing filmography have expanded to include a number of interesting films including Fighting, Man Down, Empire State, The Clapper — based on his novel — Son of No One, featuring performances from Al Pacino and Ray Liotta; and Boulevard, starring Robin Williams in his final film role. In our conversation, we discussed the process of conceiving Saints and how the film was developed; being part of the New York Hardcore scene, particularly as a member the bands Major Conflict and later, Gutterboy; the influence of the Sundance Institute on his directing and writing techniques; and collaborations and friendships with Channing Tatum, Robert Downey and Tracy Morgan.Opening Credits: Jan-Michael Hökenschnieder x Fachhochschule Dortmund - Driving I Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0); Lemon Knife - Girl With the Cat Eyes I Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). John Leguizamo has been a force in the entertainment industry for over 30 years and still the storytelling freedom of independent filmmaking attracted him to team up with writer Dito Montiel. Facing the challenges of self-funding and financing and working with a low budget, their movie is more than a story to them. It is a part of the mission to represent their culture in the media, and show it in an accurate way. To make an independent film that would give a voice to the true story of the often overlooked, ignored and written-out communities of Miami youth. With all these pieces in play, they had to become chess masters of filmmaking.IFG is created by Framework Productions. He shares the keys to that depth of craft in a lively talk about his new film The Clapper (out now!), New York, family dynamics, personal history, and just going for it. He also reveals a few intense stories from being on set (and is ridiculously humble about the great performances he gets from actors). Film Editor and friend Jake Pushinsky (Man Down, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Fighting) invited me to record with him in his editing office on the Sony lot. Getting to visit a place so packed with film history was the cherry on top of an excellent talk about the mechanics of film storytelling, naturalism, and his longtime collaboration with Dito Montiel that has yielded 7 unique & powerful films already. We get technical on the amazing scene in Fighting, which squares off Channing Tatum and real-life badass Kung Le, how that very experimental fight harnessed the power of Kung Le without relying solely on a master shot, as well as how that film is proof Channing Tatum is both nuts and amazing. As a couple of San Francisco kids, we get candid about Robin Williams and what it was like for Jake to edit one of his final films, and his two-part, epic, upcoming Muhammad Ali documentary for HBO Films. There is also a very direct and intriguing formula revealed for how to avoid exposition! This is one for all storytellers, but most assuredly for serious cinephiles and those looking to up their game in crafting solid, naturalistic stories. Check out Jake's work on Netflix, Fighting and Silicon Cowboys, and find the rest of his work on Amazon Instant Video: A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, The Son of No One, Empire State, Boulevard, Man Down, Howl, Chops, 10 Years, The Making of a Father's Dream, and We Don't Belong Here. That's your homework, but you'll thanks me later! Follow Jake on twitter @jakepushinsky and go see the Clapper when it comes out dag nabbit! Follow director Dito Monitel on twitter @ditomontiel. Shia LaBeouf has certainly packed a lot into his relatively short 30 years on this planet. From child star to a franchise leading movie star. From avant garde artist to outspoken asshole. He’s been labeled a lot of things (some unfairly, some he’ll cop to quite willingly) and he’s not afraid to talk about all of it in this very honest conversation with Josh Horowitz on this week’s “Happy Sad Confused”. Professionally this has been a banner year for LaBeouf, earning widespread acclaim for his role in “American Honey” and now returning to his roots, re-teaming with filmmaker Dito Montiel for “Man Down”, a PTSD drama co-starring Kate Mara and Jai Courtney. LaBeouf discusses his changing priorities for his career, how he’s obsessed with chasing truth, why he considers himself a blue collar actor, and whether he could imagine returning to a “Transformers” or “Indiana Jones” movie. The answers, like LaBeouf himself, will likely surprise you. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Son of No One director Dito Montiel leads an all-star cast including Al Pacino, Channing Tatum and Ray Liotta. Dito tells host Robin Milliing he wrote the story based on his mean streets upbringing in Queens, New York. Dito says he had a pinch me moment directing these heavy hitting actors. "I wrote this hoping somebody would like it and then I get a call, 'Ray Liotta wants to meet me. Al Pacino wants to meet me.' I'm like, 'oh my God, how do I get a picture with them?!' After I gushed and went crazy it turned into, 'wow we're really gonna do something.'"

The almighty Dito Montiel Trilogy finally comes to an end with *The Son of No One*. And boy, does it go out with a whimper. Jake and Sin grapple with their hopes being crushed once again as they finally say goodbye to Dito Montiel (maybe forever). Topics of rumination include John Waters's Beefy Son, 30 Rock really just was straight up racist, huh?, and the dramatically mismangaling of the French language. Content warnings: animal death, murder, fucking cops again.

*Rocky*, *Ong-Bak*, *Bloodsport*. This is a list of great fighting movies. Not on this list? 2009's *Fighting*. Jake and Sin reckon with their crushing disappoinment of Dito Montiel's 2nd Channing Tatum outing with topics such as the joy of watching a college educated white guy get his ass kicked, the terrible example of romance that *Say Anything* has left in it's wake, and *Comedy Bang! Bang!* but make it martial arts.
