Toward the end of this year's Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning documentary “Porcelain War”, one of the directors and main subjects of the film, Slava Leontyev, says, “Ukraine is like porcelain. Easy to break but impossible to destroy.” Slava, along with his wife, Anya, create beautifully crafted “porcelain beasts” that used to be their main professional focus. Amidst the constant battle against the Russian invaders, Slava, Anya, and their friend Andrey Stevanov (the film's DP) see a world around them that is broken, but, through the courage of their resistance, cannot be destroyed.   Thanks to Amos Cochran of Edit/Score for hosting our 2024 Sundance interviews.  Edit/Score is a new music library with an innovative approach to finding music for your film.   Listen to the library and learn more at editscoremusic.com    The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.   Follow: @brendanbellomo and @anyaslavaporcelain on Instagram @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter

END AD---" "ar's event marks the first as festival director for Egyptian filmmaker Amir Ramses, who was appointed earlier this year, as well as industry head Reem Allam. Ramses was tapped just weeks after Egyptian producer Mohamed Hefzy stepped down as festival president, after a four-year tenure in which he helped to revamp the long-running event. Hefzy was particularly instrumental in expanding the fest's international reach, bolstering ties with counterparts overseas, and launching an industry component that has quickly established itself as one of the leading platforms for filmmakers from the region. The festival's 44th edition, which runs until Nov. 22, unspools amid a crowded fall calendar of Arab fests, running parallel to Marrakech (Nov. 11 – 19) and on the eve of Saudi Arabia's splashy Red Sea Film Festival, which hosts its second edition in Jeddah from Dec. 1 – 10. Meanwhile, Egypt's El Gouna Film Festival, which for five years had occupied a late-October slot and brought a touch of star power to the Red Sea resort town, was put on pause this year. Its future is uncertain. Speaking to Variety on the eve of opening night, Ramses — who was the artistic director in El Gouna from 2017-2021 — described a spirit of healthy competition among the region's festivals, who he sees less as rivals than collaborators working toward a common goal of bolstering Arab cinema. “We're talking on a weekly basis about where we are, how we can support each other,” he said. “It's not about taking the lead. You can't build the region on one strong festival. We complement each other.” In his first year in Cairo, Ramses has nevertheless been keen to secure the kind of lineup that helped land El Gouna on the map. Along with the regional premiere of “The Fabelmans,” he's helped attract a strong slate of titles already making waves on the international festival circuit. Among the films celebrating regional premieres in Cairo are Carla Simón's Berlin Golden Bear Winner “Alcarràs”; Alice Diop's Venice Grand Jury Prize and Lion of the Future award winner “Saint Omer”; Alejandro Loayza Grisi's Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner “Utama”; Sally El Hosaini's Toronto opening film “The Swimmers”; and a host of award winners from this year's Cannes Film Festival, including Lukas Dhont's Grand Prix winner “Close,” Jerzy Skolimowski's Jury Prize-winning “EO” and Riley Keough and Gina Gammell Camera d'Or winner “War Pony.” At the same time, the longest continually running showcase of Arab cinema will look to shine a spotlight on the region's emerging and established talents. In the international competition, Egyptian director Ahmad Abdalla's “19B,” which celebrates its world premiere, will screen among 14 titles vying for the festival's Golden Pyramid, including Lebanese director Ali Cherri's Cannes Directors' Fortnight player “The Dam.” Ahmad Abdalla's “19B” has its world premiere in the festival's international competition. Almost daily, the news media report on a new refugee crisis or a tragic border crossing attempted by those fleeing desperate circumstances in their home countries for the promise of a better life elsewhere. Danish filmmaker Jonas Poher Rasmussen takes the measure of one such story in his remarkable new documentary “Flee”, which gives a blow-by-blow, first-hand account of a young Afghan refugee named Amin who faces a perilous journey before finally making it safely to Denmark. Jonas and Amin became friends in high school, but it was not until years later that Jonas had even the slightest idea of all that had happened to Amin and his family. Why did Amin finally decide to tell his story? How did Jonas respect Amin's desire to stay anonymous, while at the same time portraying his story not only accurately and completely, but also visually? How did a filmmaker who started out with an idea for a short film, eventually take on an incredibly ambitious, multi-layered animated feature? Recently, Mike and Ken had the opportunity to ask Jonas about his special relationship with Amin and delve into Jonas' own creative odyssey. “Flee” captured the 2021 Sundance Grand Jury Prize and is now being heralded as a serious contender for this year's Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. NEON releases the film in theaters starting on December 3rd. Hidden Gem: Trollkarlen

Filmmaker Jesse Moss talks about his new documentary “Mayor Pete” with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. “Mayor Pete” is available worldwide on Amazon's Prime Video. This riveting film takes viewers inside Pete Buttigieg's historic campaign as the first openly gay democratic Presidential candidate's bid for the highest office of the United States. From the earliest days of the campaign to his unexpected triumph in Iowa and beyond, this documentary reveals an intimate insider's inquiry of what takes place behind the scenes in a significant political campaign and how it impacts the lives of those involved. We all know Buttigieg's story from a little known Mayor from South Bend, Indiana to his Presidential bid for the White House and his Biden Administration appointment as the first openly LGBTQ Cabinet member in U.S. history as U.S. Secretary of Transportation. In this film Moss provides a modern cinéma vérité experience that explores the reality of what takes place behind the curtain in a high profile political campaign including the emotional roller coaster ride it provided for Buttigieg's staff, family, friends and especially how it affected his relationship with his husband Chasten. “Mayor Pete” has been making the film festival circuit to rave reviews and is directed, written and produced by Moss in collaboration with writers Jeff Gilbert, Amanda McBaine and produced by Dan Cogan, Amanda McBaine, Jon Bardin and Laurie David. We talked to Jesse about his inspiration for taking on this must-see film “Mayor Pete” and as a fierce gay ally his spin on our LGBTQ issues.  Jesse Moss is an Emmy and Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning director. His last film “Boys State” co-directed with his wife Amanda McBaine premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The film was awarded the Grand Jury Prize and released by Apple Original Films and A24. The film was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary and nominated for two Primetime Emmys. It won the 2021 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Documentary. Moss has twice been nominated by the Directors Guild of America for Outstanding Directorial Achievement. “Mayor Pete” will be released globally by Amazon Studios on Prime Video November 12th.  For More Info… LISTEN: 500+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES

Winner of the 2020 Sundance Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema Documentary, the film launches in virtual cinemas through Kino Marquee starting Friday, August 28. EPICENTRO is an immersive and metaphorical portrait of post-colonial, “utopian” Cuba, where the 1898 explosion of the USS Maine still resonates. This Big Bang ended Spanish colonial dominance in the Americas and ushered in the era of the American Empire. At the same time and place, a powerful tool of conquest was born: cinema as propaganda. In his latest film, Hubert Sauper explores a century of interventionism and myth-making together with the extraordinary people of Havana—who he calls “young prophets"—to interrogate time, imperialism and cinema itself.
