Conversations with Musicians, with Leah Roseman

Edwin Barker is recognized as one of the most gifted bassists on the American concert scene. In this wide-ranging interview, you'll hear about how when he was still a student, he won a job with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and then at age 22, he was appointed to the position of Principal Bass of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a position he has now held for nearly 50 years. He shared memories of his mentors, and his valuable perspectives on learning and teaching the bass, playing in orchestra, conductors, auditions, acoustics and more. We're featuring his wonderful recent album of solo bass music, Basso Profundo, both J.S. Bach's Suite no. 5 and Weinberg's Sonata Op. 108. You can also watch this on my YouTube, and I've also linked the transcript, everything linked here to my website. It's a joy to bring these inspiring episodes to you every week, and I do all the many jobs of research, production and publicity. Please consider either buying me a coffee on my Ko-fi page, or ordering some of my merchandise. Growing up, Eric Dragonetti admired planes and saw himself becoming an aerospace engineer, designing jet engines.  It wasn't until he was touring colleges that he thought he might actually want to be a pilot instead.  After 4 years at University of North Dakota, Eric graduated as a certified flight instructor.  From there, he built his hours towards becoming an airline pilot. Eric loved flying commercial, until Covid came and shook things up.  While furloughed, Eric decided to do enough private lessons to pay the mortgage and eat Top Ramen.  When he did return to his commercial role, he realized the aviation market just wasn't the same and no longer worked for him.  The decision was clear, it was time to start his own flight school. What You'll Learn: What a discovery flight is and how to arrange one. How a chance meeting led Eric to attend University of North Dakota. The two biggest struggles Eric had when it came to starting a business. How top of the line avionics change the experience. Favorite Quote: “When you have a dream, you wanna go for it, you work for it.”

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Principal Bass David Daly has released a true epic debut album with a great title: Titanic Double Bass.  The title track of the album is an Irish air my Great Uncle Eugene played on the deck of he Titanic (thats right—David’s Great Uncle played on the Titanic!) as it left Ireland.  David also filmed an epic video at the crack of dawn on the cliffs overlooking where the Titanic had been. That alone makes for an incredibly cool story, but the whole album is great as well.  It features a premiere recording of a new piece David commissioned from an Irish composer named John Kinsella as well as a revised edition of the Eccles, a ‘Duetto’ for cello and bass by Dragonetti, and a performance of Schubert’s Arpeggione. David has created a lovely “behind the music” page on his site for each piece on the album, including the history of the piece, why he decided to record it, and video footage of the recording process.  We talk about the making of the album and all sorts of great stories surrounding it.  You’ll love it!   Links to check out: Buy the CD Buy on iTunes Erin’s Lament video (so cool!) and the story behind the piece David’s site   Contrabass Conversations is sponsored by: Upton Bass String Instrument Company Upton's Karr Model Upton Double Bass represents an evolution of our popular first Karr model, refined and enhanced with further input from Gary Karr. What makes bass rosin so soft and sticky is the addition of natural waxes and solvents. Basically, as these evaporate, your rosin becomes a dry, powdery and useless. Rosin Saver prevents this evaporation by completely saturating the air surrounding your rosin, The result is rosin that always feels and sounds great regardless of the weather, temperature or venue and vastly extends the life of rosin. We’re featuring an interview with Michelle Fiore this week on Contrabass Conversations. Michelle is the proprietor of Classic Contrabass, a shop in Wheeling, Illinois catering exclusively to double bassists. I’ve known Michelle for many years–she was involved for many years with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Winter Bassfest that I started several years ago. She does great setup and repair work, and she has an excellent selection of double basses for sale as well as quality rental instruments for students. Michelle had the opportunity to visit the Maggini exhibition in Italy a couple of years ago, an event which featured Dragonetti’s Gasparo da Salo bass from 1590 as well as several other Maggini double basses. She wrote an article about this exhibition last year for the International Society of Bassists‘ Bass World journal, and she discusses in detail some of her observations about these remarkable instruments in this interview. We also chat about instrument setup and how it differs for classical and jazz bassists, sound post adjustments, and many other topics.
