Episode 216 - Mpande and Cetshwayo's Shakespearean Drama Continues, it's all King Lear, Richard III and Macbeth

It's episode 216 and we are lurching back to the north east, to Zululand. The heat is building up, and the conflicted relationship between King Mpande kaSenzanghakhona and his son, Cetshwayo kaMpande, is growing more complex by the minute. But this being Zululand, that wasn't the only competition in town. There was an older son of Mpande, called Hamu, who was his first-born son by Nozibhuku, who in turn was the daughter of the much respected chief Sothondose of the Nxumalo people. If we turn our thoughts to the succession process of the AmaZulu which has always been a tricky trail, this episode will serve to illuminate the razor-sharp line royal heirs must walk. Sothondose you see was Mbuyazi's brother. And if you recall, Mbuyazi was the man who had been killed along with seven of his brothers and half brothers at the Battle of Nondokasuka by Cetshwayo. King Mpande had publicly referred to Mbuyazi as his heir apparent, and Cetshwayo thought he was a better candidate. The plot thickens. It more than thickens, it congeals like thick red blood, spattered many times this episode. There is a Shakespearian correlation between his epic tales and those of the AmaZulu, where both are interlaced with human truths. This week's tale is a mist-mash of Macbeth, Richard the third, Henry the Sixth Part three. Perhaps you could include others, but let's leave it at that for now. IN Zululand, Mpande was king and he was apt to change his mind about his heir apparent. Cetshwayo had worked himself into the position by dint of killing Mbuyazi, and had begun to refer to Mpande as ixegwana, little-old man. Or Oomie which is why calling some middle-aged men Oomie can get you into trouble. Hamu kaMpande was an insidious man, a persevering leader who wriggled about, an indulgent man according to oral tradition as well as the written descriptions we have of him. Flabby, with the immense thighs of the house of Senzangakhona. Hamu led the Ngenetsheni clan, and had supported Cetshwayo during the recent Civil War, where Mbuyazi had been defeated. That was the case even though his grandfather, Sothondose, was Mbuyazi's brother. In other words Hamu fought against his Great Uncle. Blood, it seems, isn't thicker than water—unless it's pooling in a cauldron of treachery and Macbethian dread. Hamu also resented his bad luck, descended from Nzibe who ranked behind Mpande's other sons. He liked to show off his bling so to speak, and gathered a massive isigodlo of women, 300 in all, and bragged about being quasi-independent of Mpande. Cetshwayo kept a beady eye on these two, and there were confrontations with them, one took place in 1857. But nothing was resolved. Initially, Mbuyazi's remaining brothers turned out to be more of a threat than Hamu and Maphitha, and this is where the Shakespearian blood letting began in earnest. Cetshwayo wanted to kill Mbuyazi's thirteen year old brother Mkhungo. Someone tipped off the teen that the death squad was on its way and he fled to safety in Natal across the Thukela River. Other members of his direct family were already seeling refuge there, his mom Monase and Sikhotha his half-brother. shake

Caroline Robinson - Jimmy Savile VictimSep 4, 2022In the 1970s in the UK, there can be few names which were as synonymous with childrens television than Jimmy Savile. Savile same to fame via Radio Luxembourg and Tyne Tees Television, eventually appearing on the BBC radio and television networks. He was lauded by politicians and other celebrities for his ‘tireless' charity work, but beneath the veneer of an eccentric show business DJ and philanthropist, lay a vicious and depraved pervert. Something which only came to wider public attention after his death.Ed's guest is Caroline Robinson, great niece to Savile. She tells how it was known what Savile was in the family, and she herself was victim to the abuse Savile dished out to others. Unlike others, though, Ms Robinson's silence was bought by both Savile lavishing gifts and support on her and the wish not to have the association to someone so famous suddenly removed from her family. ‘It made me proud to tell others my Great Uncle was Jimmy Savile' she said.Following Savile's passing in 2011, a sleuth of accusers – many unknown to each other – surfaced. Savile had allegedly sexually abused children in theatres, cars, private homes, BBC dressing rooms and almost no area was safe for him to be left alone with a child of either sex. His access to places like Broadmoor and Stoke Mandeville Hospital also gave suspicion that Savile may have abused patients and there is some evidence to suggest Savile indulged in necrophilia. The legacy of filth lives on; did the BBC mandarins know about Savile? Was his presentation from a distant studio in Manchester a move to make staff feel safer whilst not acknowledging complicity? This interview is about family. It's about having a secret; but it's also about how a slick, protected paedophile fooled a nation, how he betrayed parents, abused vulnerable and/or impressionable children and adults and how he was in plain sight all the time.Books: In Plain Sight: The Life and Lies of Jimmy Savile Savile - The Beast: The Inside Story of the Greatest Scandal in TV History: Singing with "Iron Maiden" - the Drugs, the Groupies...the Whole Story Victim Zero: Jimmy Savile tried to ruin my life. In this final full episode of Series Seven, host Andrew Martin meets Morag Peers - an award-winning professional genealogist who specialises in researching the lives of the people of Scotland. He hears how she got hooked on family history, how she ended up going professional, and her love of using passport records to trace family and world history.THE LIFE STORY - JOSEPH CLARKEMorag has chosen to tell the story of her 2x Great Uncle, Joseph Clarke. He was born in Kelton in 1846, into a family with long roots in the area. However, when the 1861 census arrives, he's just 14 years old and listed on a sloop ship named 'George and Jane' and apprenticed to a wool merchant.Morag traces Joseph's travels from Liverpool in England, to Chilé, Australia, China, and countless trips between these locations. Whilst his wanderlust takes him around the world and back, sadly it didn't last for long, and Joseph is taken ill on board the ship the Dundonald. Despite the help of the Captain, his illness continues to develop and he died. Morag has been able to view the Captain's log of the voyage, and discovered that the exact latitude and longitude has been recorded, and being far away from home, the location of his burial at sea is recorded too.  THE BRICK WALL - MARGARET LAUGHLAN  Morag is looking for help with her 2x Great Grandmother Margaret Laughlan who was born in 1841 in Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland to two Irish immigrants. Unfortunately, her last name has been subject to many variants which hasn't helped in Morag's research. Morag knows that Margaret had two illegitimate daughters - Margaret and Agnes, but there is no clue to the father's name (or names), and Margaret senior remains living with her parents through the censuses.Unfortunately, DNA testing has not provided many matches at all, and so that leaves Morag wonderingWere Margaret junior and Agnes sisters or half sisters?Who was/were their father(s)?If you think that you can help Morag with a clue or a research idea, then you can contact her at her website www.glasgowgenealogy.co.uk or the email address she gives in the episode or alternatively, you can send us a message and we'll pass it straight on to her. In the meanwhile, Morag is fascinated by Andrew's offer of help, but neither of them are expecting it to be such a moving experience...- - -Episode Credits:Andrew Martin - Host and ProducerMorag Peers - GuestSend us a Text Message.Thank you for listening! In the fifth episode of Series Seven, host Andrew Martin meets anthropologist and Welsh professional genealogist, Dai Davies, and finds out how they got hooked on researching family history, the challenges of researching Welsh family history from afar, and their thoughts on how the genealogy community could become a better place.THE LIFE STORY - DAVID DAVIES Dai has chosen to tell the life story of their 8x Great Uncle, David Davies who was born in 1754 in a small parish near Lampeter in West Wales, and was the son of tenant farmers and Wesleyan Methodists. Dai was excited to discover this person in their tree, as David Davies was a highly influential educator, minister, and political poet in Wales during the 18th Century. He is known to have had a school in Castell Hywel, and was a minister at Llwynrhydowen Chapel. His work to translate English into Welsh for the newly literate communities, resulted in him even being described as 'improving into Welsh' on the popular poem by Thomas Gray - 'Elegy Written In A Country Churchyard'.  However, sometimes his political thoughts on the rapidly changing world around him, including the French Revolution, would cause controversy.THE BRICK WALL - DAVID THOMAS It's the family of Dai's 7x Great Grandfather David Thomas (brother-in-law of the above David Davies), that has them stuck for answers.Dai has found 76 records attributed to David Thomas, and knows about his life between 1757 and his death in 1816, Lampeter in Ceredigion, Wales, but Dai has found no trace of David Thomas' parents or siblings. Who were David Thomas' parents?Who were David Thomas' siblings?Where was David Thomas pre-1757? If you think that you can offer Dai a research clue or idea, then you can email them on the address they give in the episode, or find them at @GenealCymru at Twitter. Recollections - Paul McStay   Paul McStay was born on 22nd October 1964 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Grand-nephew of former Celtic team captain and manager Jimmy McStay, playing for Celtic was in the family blood. A hotly tipped youth prospect Paul McStay was a member of Celtic Boys Club who burst onto the football scene in remarkable style when he hit two goals and was man of the match as Scotland schoolboys defeated their English counterparts at Wembley in front of a live TV audience in June 1980. He signed for Celtic aged seventeen and made his senior Celtic debut in a 4-0 home Scottish Cup win over Queen of the South on January 21st 1982. Part of a great Celtic dynasty – his Great Uncle's Jimmy and Willie were both Hoops greats while brothers Willie and Raymond also played for the club – Paul McStay seemed almost destined to write his name into Celtic folklore….   Enjoy

Host Scott Fisher opens the show with David Allen Lambert, Chief Genealogist of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and AmericanAncestors.org. The guys begin with the story of a Canadian man who learned from a newspaper birth listing from the early 1950s, and DNA, that he had been switched at birth. Then, one of the oddest stories of the year… a married couple is freaking out because they learned that they share ancestors eight generations back! Then, a cannon ball has shown up at a beach in Rhode Island. You won't believe where the finder is keeping it. At Colonial Williamsburgh, a dig has revealed a remarkable new find at a spot that David has walked over countless times. And finally, Europe's oldest publication has been dated at over 2,300 years old. Next, in two parts, Fisher visits with Dr. Nick Barratt, best known in the UK for his hosting and research on four seasons of “Who Do You Think You Are?” In his own research, Nick has discovered that his paternal grandmother's brother was a spy for the Soviet Union leading up to World War II! Hear how he discovered this shocker, how it has impacted him and his immediate family, and how it has changed his understanding of how he presents information he provides to others. Then, David returns for another couple of rounds of Ask Us Anything. That's all this week on Extreme Genes, America's Family History Show!

There are 2 types of people when the Doctor diagnoses them with Cancer.  The first person who hears they have 6 months to live, says, "Watch me. I'm going to live 6 years!"  This happened to my Great Uncle.  He got diagnosed with cancer at 68 and he said, "Fuck this, I'm too old to fix this."  He's 91 years old.  The second type of person that hears they have cancer and only 6 months to live, says, "Oh no! I'm gonna die. I'm a victim."  You have no idea how powerful your thinking is.  How a man thinketh, so shall he be.  You are more powerful than you know.  If you focus on getting better, you're going to be better.  If you focus on getting sicker and dying, guess what's going to happen?  You've got to stay positive and keep your mind in the right state so you can be strong and power through anything.  If you can think it, you can be it.  I've known people who got that diagnosis and went to a vegan diet and killed cancer.  Everything is possible good or bad.  It just depends on where you allow your mind to take you.  More life or an early grave....it's your decision.  #RiseAbove    HOW TO GET INVOLVED:  This planet is based on an algorithm and with every positive action, there is an adverse reaction.  Ryan Stewman rose and overcame a life of addiction, imprisonment, divorce, and circumstances that would break the spirit of the average human being.  He went on to create a powerful network of winners and champions in life and business creating a movement quickly changing lives one day at a time.  Learn more at: www.JoinTheApex.com   Check out this show and previous killer episodes of the ReWire Podcast in Apple Podcasts.

Scott and I talk about his career and innovative mindset, aptitude for tackling complex business challenges from a fresh perspective, and Creative brand stelekon. Show Notes Were you an "action sports" kid? I was, I grew up in Huntington Beach. One would say sort of the epicenter. But growing up there, you had no idea it was the epicenter. But you know, we skateboarded everywhere. We did BMX, we surfed. Which wasn't only an action sport; it was just sort of that way of life. That was what we did as kids. You must have been creative from a young age. Is that a family trait? I have a Great Uncle who is, but other than that, it sort of skipped most of the generations prior to me. I have a first cousin who's very creative. He's also an action sports guy, Taylor Steele, who made, made surf movies and sort of that created that momentum generation. He's also very creative as far as illustrating and video creation production. So yeah, I don't know where I got it from, but it hit me hard and fast, and as a kid, I was always with a pencil. What was your first commercial creation? I would personally draw things, and then all through school, elementary, middle, and high school, I was the guy drawing the covers of the yearbooks. And then as a young person, I would do holiday windows around the neighborhood. People wanted Santa painted on the windows for the holidays or Halloween. I would do things like that for some extra pocket money as a kid. I was always repainting all my hot wheel cars, and my brother and I used to like to make those old Revell models, painting those, trying to make 'em look realistic. Mm-hmm. I was always doing, trying to do something creative. Did you work with an agency before starting STELEKON? I have not; I never worked for an agency. I take it back, in college, I worked with a very small agency and did a lot of creative work for them as an intern and then a short-term employee, but then quickly started doing my own little agency work. Anybody that needed creative work I did it to help pay for school. I put myself through college. I originally studied architecture. That's kind of really what I want to do. So you'll get this, I would. I did a lot of overlays for builders, and I did a lot of study models. You know, white study models, architecture models for builders locally to show how intrusive the building would be in the natural environment. So I did a lot of that stuff. It was just a way to make some money to help pay for school, help eat while I was in school. And, you know, I did logos for everybody. I did everything I possibly could to make some money. My first big career move was I interviewed at Oakley as a young, fresh college graduate, and while there, I met some interesting people, and they put me together with the other two people that sort of got Dragon off the ground. Dragon Optical was a sunglass, moto, goggle, snow goggle apparel accessory brand. And I was on the creative side. I did the logo; I did all the ads and all the marketing. Tell us about STELEKON. How did that come to life? I think because I'm an artist, I love drawing, and I'm into the creative side of things, I felt classified as a nerd, I would say. Cause I love movies, and I love comic books because I always liked the way they looked and loved the drawing and, you know, was super aspirational. Have wanted to draw for a comic book company. I go to Comicon all the time. And it's sort of a, you know, it used to be sort of a secret, nerd culture, and I think that's sort of gone away. It's become sort of main mainstream now. And creative and clever, and I've always enjoyed drawing and being a part of that, that sort of, that sort of genre. I never had an art tag name. I've been an illustrator and stuff. I never had a tag name. And all my friends, you know, that are street artists all have these really cool tag names. Right. And when my son was super young, one Halloween, there was a bunch of skeletons out in front of a house, and he said, dad, look at all the stelekons, and just as a, you know, a, a three-year-old, uh, mistake. And I said this is perfect. I'm going to awesome trade trademark and get the URL and get everything about it because now I have a name and I, you know, all social handles. Cause it's not a real word, but it sounds like a real word, but it isn't. And that was sort of how I got the name started. What is the inspiration behind the irreverence aesthetic of STELEKON? I think the irreverent side of things is just really just to be, you know, they've been, I don't wanna say persecuted, but they've been looked at as outcasts. When in fact, there's probably more of them now than there is the hardcore, I bet collectively; they're smarter than the rest of us. And so the references just kind of makes it more fun and realistic. It makes it more human and connected to what they're about. What I gathered as the key to your superpowers is your innovative mindset and aptitude for tackling complex business challenges from a fresh perspective. How have those evolved over your career? Architecture is probably right on the border of, or right in the middle between, the right and left brain. Because you're, you gotta be creative, but it also has to work. But I also can use my analytical side too. And I've always considered myself a renaissance cause I was really good at math as well and really good at business acumen and understanding how to get things done. But with a creative hook because I am creative and I've always been a big believer in it's always another way to do this. Maybe even six other ways. Let's look at the different ways to get this, whatever problem, whatever issue, whatever hurdle it is done. Let's find another way to get it handled. And then also, how can we turn this into a positive? We connected on LinkedIn when I liked a post where you wrote, "I've become fascinated with the new 'know-it-all' but 'never done anything' business generation in the world today." How do you think that has manifested in our society today? I've come across quite a few of them, and to me, it's maybe a little bit of envy, but also a little bit of, I don't wanna say disgust, but a little bit of like, eh come on. I think this generation was told they could be anything they wanted. There are no rules. You know, everybody gets a participation trophy, and so they have just this unbridled confidence. And so they can essentially, I'm gonna be a CEO by, by 22 and retired by 30 and a billionaire. Wow. I don't know. That's, that's actually quite a feat. I don't know how that's gonna happen, considering you don't have a job yet, but you're telling me how I should be running my business and you've never even had a job. And then they all claim it. I don't know about you, but I get an email a day and a message a day on LinkedIn from somebody that's gonna tell me how to build my business, they're an E-commerce guru, and I look at their profile and say, this person graduated yesterday right from college, never had a job, but yet he's gonna try to tell me who's got 25 years in this industry, how to grow my business. Now there are some new tactics I can learn. But hey, let's, you know, let's tone down the confidence a little bit. Do you have any suggestions and/or advice for folks wanting to get into creative work? Yeah, I mean, it's a lot of fun. I've guest lectured at San Diego State and Palomar College and at Southwestern College down by the border about creative stuff and expectations. It's a great field. Obviously, the most dedicated bubble to the surface that just with any business. So my thought is, I always tell 'em just know as much as you can. How are you improving your skillset? Every day, every week, every month, every year. And I'm not saying that you're taking classes, but what are you doing to improve your Photoshop, your eye? Right. And I'll tell you, the people that come in that have an artistic eye to start with have an advantage. If you were able to hang a huge banner at the front of one of the tradeshows, what would it say? Individual, we are strong, United we are invincible and Find your path. Ignore the noise. Feed your mind Do you have any daily routines you have to keep your sanity, health like meditation, exercise, walking the dog, etc I have a cat. It's my coworker and likes to go in and out the same door every eight seconds, so it keeps me on my toes. I'm an outdoorsy person, so I'm always doing something. Exercise in particular, as we age, exercise becomes more and more and more important. Especially when you try to go back and do the things you did as a youth, you snowboard, whatever it is, and you're like, man, I just don't have the knee strength or whatever it is anymore. So I just try to stay in shape, and my wife and I try to walk every day. Do you have any favorite books or books you give as gifts? I wish I could say yes. I don't. My wife is an avid reader. I mean, she's reading books all the time. And I get ripped by everybody in my family that I haven't read a book since college. Not true. But that's the joke. In the 1970s in the UK, there can be few names which were as synonymous with childrens television than Jimmy Savile. Jeff earned a doctorate degree in Parapyschology from UC Berkley and was the grand prize winner of the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies (BICS) Essay contest, making the best case for life after death and consciousness outside the brain, entitled “Beyond the Brain”. He is the author of the books, The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems and The PK Man and is the host of the New Thinking Allowed show. Jeff provides nine lines of evidence for proof of the afterlife in the essay and we talked about several of them, to include Near Death Experiences (NDEs), mediumship, reincarnation, instrumental transcoummication, possession and more. He also described an experience he had in his early 20s, where he believe he was visited by his deceased Great Uncle in his dream and communicated with him. Jeff stated that this experience was so profound that it led him into his work and study Parapshychology. He is the only person in the US to ever receive a doctoral degree in Paraphsychology from an accredited university. Jeff also discussed with me things like psychokineses, which wrote a book about and poltergeists, all are also topics that help make the case for life after death. A young Claudia Bierschenk lived at the edge of a world called the GDR, in a village surrounded by hills, valleys and thick forests. Her great uncle lives in the Forbidden Zone, the area where the East German border is a few metres away from West Germany. This is where the villages are like ghosts towns and inhabitants need special permits to enter.Claudia provides a vivid and unique description of entering the Forbidden Zone for the first time after being granted special permits to visit her Great Uncle on his 80th birthday. His house is the last house before the final border fences and Claudia describes  up close to the fences, while her grandfather tells her about “rabbit discos”…We also hear more of her life in this isolated area, including strange sports activities and Claudia's experience of being trained as a 12-year-old Para medic. We end the episode talking about how she and her family experienced the momentous events of 1989 when the border opens, and East Germans are free to cross into West Germany. Claudia has distilled these stories into a book, Never Mind, Comrade, published by Tangerine PressDon't miss our previous episode with Claudia here https://pod.fo/e/137f1eCold War history is disappearing; however, a simple monthly donation will keep this podcast on the air. In this episode, we catch up with John Hasbrouck, the owner/distiller of Just Rum based in Sandy, Oregon.  We met in person at last year's Miami Rum Renaissance Festival, but we first learned about them from the YouTube channel "Just Drinking".  John starts with how he got into making rum by inheriting a pot still from his Great Uncle to his distilling process and maple barrels. Also about taking feedback from the rum community. In Four Sips or Less:Neat or on iceFan of the Goonies movieIs Sloth chained up in your basementFavorite thing about Sandy, OregonCheck out their links:https://justrum.com/https://www.facebook.com/JustRumhttps://www.instagram.com/justadistilleryinc/Don't forget to check out our site and linksDrums and Rums websiteFOLLOW us on Facebook, YouTube,  InstagramVisit Club Tiki at   https://www.clubtikico.com/ to order rum-based cocktails in a can. This episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast is a very special one. John takes a little road trip and records this episode with his great uncle Harvey. Harvey was born in 1939 and lived most of his life within a stones throw of the Red River in both Oklahoma and Texas. Harvey has done a little bit of everything through out his life. He began farming cotton at a shockingly young age, he was hauling cotton gin equipment on a truck to west Texas before he was old enough to have a drivers license, and even helped out with a gold mining venture for a short time. While all of that was going on he also got his pilots license, drove a mail truck, and came surprisingly close to catching a state record fish. Harvey talks about what he hunted before their were any deer in the area, and how he vividly remembers seeing his first whitetail doe. Oddly enough his first ever deer was a mule deer he shot in Canada, and that's a memory he will never forget for more than one reason. He tells all kinds of stories from hunting and fishing, and even a great story about pulling a jet through downtown Ada. You will want to listen to this episode over and over again, and will be laughing all the way through. ‍ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
