How can education transform lives in underserved regions like Eastern Uganda? Education is a fundamental right, yet millions are denied access to quality learning. Learning Alliance recognizes that just throwing textbooks at children doesn't make learning happen. In addition to high-quality, localized materials, Learning Alliance is adding teacher training and ongoing coaching to ensure long-term impact. Robust evidence coming out of RCTs in Kenya has inspired this model, which is set to launch in Eastern Uganda in 2025. When I interviewed Learning Alliance Co-founder Ilana Kessler for my podcast, I learned how the project synthesizes her teaching background with extensive experience in scaling development work in East Africa. She isn't just someone flying into the region blind, she has worked in Kenya, Ghana, and Tanzania and thinks deeply about what her work means to East African people. Her scientific mindset, evidenced by the way she speaks about research and data, makes me bullish about how well the evidence elsewhere in East Africa might transfer to the Learning Alliance. I'm thrilled to see work that both honours the dignity of Ugandan people and stands to help millions. If Learning Alliance even partially realizes the promise that structured pedagogy holds, this could enable a better way of life for society in that region. Episode Overview: This episode features a deep conversation with Joshua Bicknell, co-founder of Balloon Ventures, exploring how the organisation evolved from a non-profit connecting young people with informal entrepreneurs to becoming a financial institution that's deployed over $14 million in loans to SMEs across Kenya and Uganda, while openly sharing portfolio data to prove the viability of SME lending as an asset class. Key topics: - The false gospel of universal entrepreneurship - Defining and creating "good jobs" - Blended finance and return expectations - The power of boring businesses - Data transparency in impact investing - Cash-based economies and digitalisation Notable points: 1. Their portfolio businesses represent 8% of Eastern Uganda's GDP—approximately 0.5% of the country's total GDP 2. The institution provides loans of $10,000-$200,000 bundled with 6 months of business support 3. They're helping validate that SME lending can be viable with the right approach to data and risk 4. Their model challenges the "have your cake and eat it" narrative in impact investing 5. They're open-sourcing portfolio data to encourage other institutions to enter the space Listen in for practical insights into how traditional brick-and-mortar businesses can drive meaningful economic development and job creation in East Africa's emerging markets. It's Tuesday, October 29th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Ugandan pastor and family burned to death A pastor and his family were burned to death in a house fire in Eastern Uganda, reports The Christian Post. The bodies of Pastor Weere Mukisa, his 25-year-old wife, Annet Namugaya, and their two daughters, 7-year-old Judith and 4-year-old Sylvia, were found consumed in a fire set in the early morning hours of October 13th. The pastor had been threatened by local Muslims for evangelizing among the local Muslim population. The pastor's brother said, “When the three young Muslims converted to Christ, my brother started receiving threatening messages that he should stop any contact with the three converts, and that the act committed is against the teaching of Islam to not join the religion of infidels.” Canadian government persecuting 74 Amish In other news, the Canadian government is persecuting 74 members of the Amish community in Ontario for their failure to download a Covid-19 app despite the fact they have no access to smart phones. The government has also placed liens on the Amish farms for those incapable of paying the fines. Russia has gained control of Donetsk, Ukraine The Russian army has gained control of 478 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in the ongoing war, mostly in the Donetsk region in the month of October. That's the first major gain since March of 2022. The Kiel Institue of the World Economy reports that the Ukrainian conflict has already drawn $128 billion from Europe and $92 billion from the US. Meantime, Russia is increasing its military budget by 25% to $145 billion in 2025 — a full 32% of the nation's government budget, reports Reuters. Archbishop of Canterbury compromises on Biblical sexuality The leading cleric in the Church of England, Justin Welby, was asked in an interview last week what he thought about acts of sodomy. The Archbishop of Canterbury approved of the sexual perversion in these words. WELBY: “Where we've come to is to say that all sexual activity should be within a committed relationship, whether it's straight or gay. In other words, we're not giving up on the idea that sex is within marriage or civil partnership.” Some within the Anglican Church are now calling for the archbishop's resignation. Proverbs 25:26 points out that, “Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.” House sales hit lowest level since 1995 Annual sales of existing single family homes in the United States have dropped to the lowest level since 1995, reports The Wall Street Journal. That's almost 30 years ago! Buyers are revolting against high prices. For example, the median price of a condo is $360,000, up from $165,000 in 2013. Bitcoin, gold and inflation are up Bitcoin is hovering around $69,000, approaching an all-time high again, up 4.5% from three years ago. Gold is up 61% from three years ago, now selling at $2,740 per ounce. And inflation is up 16% over the last three years. Public profanity more common Profanity is more common in the public forum. A recent presidential candidate swore or cursed 13 times at a rally. On the local level, KPBS of San Diego analyzed the city's public meetings, and found an exponential increase in incivility, cursing, and swearing between 2020 and 2023. The number of uncivil exchanges in the public meetings increased from just two in 2008 to 167 in 2023. A recent survey produced by Harris X poll found that 68% of Americans over 65 years of age are bothered by the public use of profanity, and only 26% of 18- to 35-year-olds are bothered by it. Deuteronomy 5:11 issues the warning for all of us: “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.” Trump enjoys slight lead in all 7 swing states In the presidential polls, Trump leads Harris in Wisconsin by one point. Trump leads in Michigan by one point. Trump leads in Arizona by two points. Trump is half a point ahead in Pennsylvania. Trump leads in North Carolina by two points. Trump leads in Nevada by one point. And Trump leads Georgia by two points. Either candidate will need to win three or four of these seven swing states to take the election. Mel Gibson eager to depict Siege of Malta Actor and producer Mel Gibson met with the Prime Minister of Malta and the Film Commission to discuss a production of a film which would dramatize the historic Siege of Malta, reports The Times of Malta. Between the months of May and September of 1565, seven hundred knights defended the European continent from the island invasion of 40,000 Mohammedan Turks. Queen Elizabeth I had warned that, “If the Turks should prevail against the Isle of Malta, it is uncertain what further peril might follow to the rest of Christendom.” In the providence of God, the Hospitaler Knights, led by Jean Parisot de Valette, defeated the seemingly invincible Ottomans, and saved Europe. $1,075 given toward $4,185 goal to finish Pakistani orphanage well And finally, toward the $4,185 that we are trying to raise to help a Pakistani Christian orphanage housing 85 children dig a new 500-foot deep well to avoid the contamination of chemicals that compromised their 200-foot well, four Worldview families made a donation. Get more details in our October 28th newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Courtney and her children -- Stephen, Isaiah and Quintin -- in Coopersburg, Pennsylvania gave $75, Dick and Susan in Hoyt, Kansas gave $200, Meggan in Register, Georgia gave $300, and a couple in Ventura, California gave $500. That means we have $3,110 still to raise. Send your tax-deductible donation made out to Rio Grande Valley Prayer Center, their sister organization here in America. The address is 3106 Harmony Lane, Mission, TX 78574. In the memo, write: “Pakistani orphanage well.” The prayer center will then wire your money to a nearby bank in Pakistan to help build that well. Please email me at Adam@TheWorldview.com to let me know how much you wrote your check for so we can help complete this life-saving project. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Dear EA, please be the reason people like me will actually see a better world. Help me make some small stride on extreme poverty where I live -- by the end of 2024., published by Anthony Kalulu, a rural farmer in eastern Uganda. on April 12, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This message is for everyone in the global EA community. For all the things that have been said about EA over the recent past -- from SBF to Wytham Abbey to my own article on EA in 2022 (I have a disclaimer about this at the very bottom of this message) -- I am asking the global EA community to help me make only one small stride on extreme poverty where I live, before 2024 ends. Let's make up for all the things that have been said about EA (e.g., that EA doesn't support poor people-led grassroots orgs in the global south), by at least supporting only one poor people-led grassroots org in a part of the world where poverty is simply rife. Be the reason people like myself will actually see a better world, and the reason for people like us to actually see EA as being the true purveyor of the most good. FYI: I come from a community that purely depends on agriculture for survival. For this reason, the things that count as producing "the most good" in the eyes of people like me, are things like reliable markets for our produce etc, as opposed to things like mosquito nets, deworming tablets etc that EA might view as creating the most good. About me: My name is Anthony, a farmer here in eastern Uganda. My own life hasn't been very easy. But looking at people's circumstances where I live, I decided not to sit back. Some clue: Before COVID came, the World Bank said (in 2019), that 70% of the extreme poor in Sub Saharan Africa were packed in only 10 countries. Uganda was among those ten countries. Even among those 10 countries, according to the World Bank, Uganda still had the sluggishiest (i.e., the slowest) poverty reduction rate overall, as shown in this graph. Even in Uganda: Eastern Uganda, where I live, is Uganda's most impoverished, per all official reports. Our region Busoga meanwhile, which has long been the poorest in eastern Uganda, has since 2017 doubled as the poorest not just in eastern Uganda, but also in Uganda as a whole. In 2023, The Monitor, a Ugandan local daily, said: "Busoga is the sub-region with most people living in a complete poverty cycle followed by Bukedea and Karamoja. This is according to findings released in 2021/2022 by Mr Vincent Fred Senono, the Principal Statistician and head of analysis at the Uganda Bureau of Statistics". Even in Busoga itself, our two neighboring districts Kamuli & Buyende, being the furthermost, remotest area of Busoga on the shores of Lake Kyoga, have the least economic activity, and are arguably Busoga's most destitute. In short, while Uganda as a country is the very last in Sub Saharan Africa in terms of poverty reduction, our region Busoga is the worst in Uganda, and even in Busoga, our 2 twin districts Kamuli & Buyende, being the remotest, are simply the most miserable. Help us see some good before 2024 ends: I am asking the global EA community to help the Uganda Community Farm (the UCF), a nonprofit social enterprise that was founded by me, to accomplish only two goals before 2024 ends. Please be the reason people like us will actually see a better world. Goal one: Size of Long Island. That's, expanding the UCF's current white sorghum project to cover every village in Kamuli & Buyende - a 3,300 sq km region the size of Long Island (New York). Since 2019, the UCF has trained many rural farmers in Kamuli & Buyende, in eastern Uganda, on white sorghum. Our goal right now, is to expand this work and cover every village in Kamuli & Buyende, with white sorghum. Kamuli & Buyende are two neighboring districts in Busoga, Uganda's most impoverished reg...

Growing up in Eastern Uganda, Nyombi Morris' life has been dictated by climate disaster. At the age of 9, awful flooding hit Nyombi's town, and his family was forced to move to Kampala, the capitol of Uganda. From there, he's gone on a serious journey and overcome a number of obstacles to get to where he is, including going back to school after years out, getting onto the job ladder by managing footballers' social media, and now living the challenges of being a young, Ugandan man trying to speak up. More people are talking about how the effects of climate change are felt unevenly around the world. Nyombi has experienced these effects firsthand and has used that experience as motivation to try and stop what happened to him, happening to others. It is obvious to say that his story is inspiring, but what feels most important about Nyombi's message is that he has the real-life experience of being part of the climate crisis, and those voices need to be represented. A pre-warning that Nyombi was in a shared space while recording in Kampala. So, at times, his audio is unclear. But it doesn't take away from his fascinating story into working on climate issues.

Today you get to be a fly on the wall of a consulting session between myself and a coffee producer in Uganda. The Coffee Gardens is a newer project of coffee producers who have partnered with select coffee farmers in Eastern Uganda. They currently work directly with 300 small holder farmers. They have a micro-processing station in the foothills of Mount Elgon. This episode might be most relevant to a coffee producer, so if you know any, please pass this episode along to them. Especially if they are curious about using yeast to control their fermentations. Today we cover how to process undesirable cherries, we talk about the challenges in scaling up from a small trial to full scale lots. We also discuss yeast usage in very rural settings, is it even appropriate? At what volume should a producer consider using yeast? Even if you’re not a coffee producer I hope you will listen to the questions and concerns of a coffee producer and better understand their reality.
