Send us a textEpisode 177David Hockney has spent a lifetime looking. At people, at landscapes, at the way light bounces off water, at the possibilities of paint, pencil, and pixels. Few artists have ever been so restless, so endlessly curious. And yet, his journey—the journey that took him from a working-class childhood in Bradford to the sun-drenched swimming pools of California and back to the wild, rolling landscapes of Yorkshire—is one of both movement and return. This is not just the story of an artist. It is the story of a boy sketching on the streets of post-war England, dreaming of a world bigger than the one he was born into. It is the story of a student in 1960s London, pushing against the limits of what art could be. It is the story of a man who found creative freedom in Los Angeles, who captured love and longing in bold, clean lines, and who, even after heartbreak and loss, never stopped painting, never stopped seeing. His work is instantly recognizable—bright, playful, alive—but beneath the color is a deeper truth: a man who has spent decades obsessing over how we look at the world. And in doing so, he has changed the way we see it.This is the story of David Hockney.Support the showInsta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.com

An American edition was brought out by Charles H. Kerr in 1899, in the wake of the great Anarchist's first U.S. speaking tour; his Memoirs of a Revolutionist was also published (by Houghton-Mifflin) that year. A new edition in Kerr's “Pocket Library of Socialism” appeared in 1901; just after Kropotkin's second U.S. tour. (In Chicago, he had been introduced to a large audience by Clarence Darrow, a close associate of the Kerr Company.) Yet another Kerr edition in the 1910s went through many printings, and was still on the Kerr list well into the 1930s. Long unavailable in any U.S. edition, it is reprinted here in the standard English translation by pioneer British socialist H.M. Hyndman, whose lush Victorian prose ably captures the eloquence, fervour and charm of this celebrated revolutionary classic.     Revolutionary Classics     Charles H. Send us a textMahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Kali Dayton. Kali Dayton is an ICU nurse practitioner and like Gandhi, MLK Jr., and Parks, Kali is peacefully protesting the way ICU patients are cared for. Similar to the civil rights advocates before her, Kali fights for the rights of ICU patients. She believes they have the right to limited sedation, early mobilization, open communication, and family participation. Kali was born as a baby nurse into an Awake and Walking ICU in which ventilated patients received little to no sedation, were out of bed walking while intubated, and communicating through whiteboards, all with the crucial support of their families. Then she began traveling to ICUs across the country and found her patients automatically sedated if intubated, enduring long periods of immobilization, and if they were lucky enough to avoid death in the ICU, they were discharged to suffer PTSD and face long periods of rehabilitation.Kali is a self-described ICU revolutionist and is dedicated to educating both clinicians and families through her podcasts, "Walking Home from the ICU" for clinicians, and "Walking You Through the ICU", which is directed toward patients and families. Through her consulting business, Dayton ICU Consulting, she travels the country visiting ICUs helping them to become awake and walking ICUs. The revolution has begun. In the five-minute snippet: did someone say free time? Welcome to the eleventh of our eighteen shows celebrating the centenary of the Paris edition of Hemingway's book of vignettes, in our time.Listeners might be familiar with this vignette as the short story "The Revolutionist" from Hemingway's bigger collection In Our Time published in 1925.  How does the vignette characterize the post-WWI communist revolution and its revolutionaries as well as counter-responses in Hungary, Italy, and Switzerland? Why does the narrator seem to fixate on classical painters, particularly the work of Mantegna? What are the connections between this story and other Hemingway works like A Farewell to Arms? In this episode, we respond to these questions and many more as we delve into a vignette that often gets glossed over!  Join us as we explore in our time before it became In Our Time!

Tonight's reading comes from Memoirs of a Revolutionist. Written by Peter Kropotkin and published in 1906, this story is the author's Autobiography as well as being his most well-known work. My name is Teddy and I aim to help people everywhere get a good night's rest. Sleep is so important and my mission is to help you get the rest you need. The podcast is designed to play in the background while you slowly fall asleep. For those new to the podcast, it started from my own struggles with sleep. I wanted to create a resource for others facing similar challenges, and I'm so grateful for the amazing community we've built together. This podcast is self-made and produced, which is why you'll hear a short ad at the beginning of each episode. These ads, along with support from subscribers and patrons, enable me to keep delivering this podcast for free to those who need it. Thank you to everyone who shared their words of gratitude with me during the week, whether through the website or their podcast app. Your messages mean the world to me. A special thanks to the new subscribers via Spotify for Podcasters and all existing subscribers and Patreon sponsors. Your support is invaluable. Of course, a massive thank you goes to the patrons on Patreon. Your monthly subscriptions allow me to continue producing more episodes. Without your support, this wouldn't be possible. My goal is to keep this podcast free and accessible to everyone. This is why you'll hear a quick ad from Spotify at the beginning of each episode. It helps generate financial support for the creation of the podcast. Support from listeners via Patreon and Spotify also plays a crucial role. If you find the podcast beneficial and would like to support it, here are a few ways you can contribute: • Follow the podcast in your app and leave a comment. • Become a subscriber for $2.99 a month to remove Spotify ads and support episode creation. • If subscribing isn't possible, an easy way to help is by leaving a review and rating in your podcast app. Even one sentence helps a lot. Hearing from listeners who find the podcast helpful is one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey. As always, thank you to all existing patrons on Patreon. Your support ensures that I can keep bringing out episodes for those who need them. Sharing the podcast with a friend who may need it is a fantastic way to show your appreciation and help others. AOC. The country continues to obsess over the bright light of the progressive caucus and most high profile member of “The Squad.” From day one, AOC has been the subject of harsh criticisms steeped in misogyny and class resentment; mostly from the right. Oftentimes, however, the criticisms have come from inside the Democratic Party establishment. Recently, however, she's been in the crosshairs of the far left end of the spectrum. Some of this isn't new, but it seems to be growing. Our series in Orthodoxy continues as we look at Chesterton's interesting perspective on wealthy people, the aristocracy, and placing too much trust in the government. He also points out the fundamental flawed assumption of progressivism: that things left to themselves will progress rather than decay. "Open-mindedness" does not automatically lead to "progress" and neither does revolution lead to better outcomes. He expresses a great deal of distrust for government and extols democracy as the best way to keep human sinfulness in check. The Christian understanding of human sinfulness ought to keep any aspirations to man-made utopia in check.  "We have said we must be fond of this world, even in order to change it. We now add that we must be fond of another world (real or imaginary) in order to have something to change it to." "The Evolutionist says, 'Where do you draw the line?' the Revolutionist answers, 'I draw it here: exactly between your head and body.'" "But all conservatism is based upon the idea that if you leave things alone you leave them as they are. But you do not. If you leave a thing alone you leave it to a torrent of change."  "This eternal revolution, this suspicion sustained through centuries, you (being a vague modern) call the doctrine of progress. If you were a philosopher you would call it, as I do, the doctrine of original sin. You may call it the cosmic advance as much as you like; I call it what it is -- the Fall." "I could never conceive or tolerate any Utopia which did not leave to me the liberty for which I chiefly care, the liberty to bind myself. Complete anarchy would not merely make it impossible to have any discipline or fidelity; it would also make it impossible to have any fun. The dissolution of all contracts would not only ruin morality but spoil sport."

Juliana Lumumba wrote a letter directly to Phillippe King of the Belgians with a special request: That the remains of her father be repatriated to his homeland so that he would no longer be, in her words ‘a hero without a grave.' Inspired by recent events to mark the Independence Day celebration of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tracy DW dedicates this podcast episode to the country's Revolutionist and first Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba. A man who was dedicated to making his country a better place to live and making a better life for his people but was tragically cut down before reaching his prime and fulfilling his promise. Despite the fact that The Congo was never a British colony, Britain had mining interests in the Congo's vast natural resources and this was seen as part of the wider process at work that conspired to remove Lumumba from power and ultimately bring about his demise. Adeyinka Grandson, president of the Young Yorubas for Freedom (YYF) revolutionist has been jailed for four and half years by a United Kingdom court over his social media posts against some ethnic groups in Nigeria. The west London man is accused and convicted for racial hatred with inflammatory messages encouraging violence in Nigeria.Adeyinka Shoyemi, 45, of Powis Terrace in Notting Hill, first came to the attention of counter-terror police in March 2019 after members of the public reported his posts on a social network targeting particular ethnic groups in Nigeria. The messages, posted by accounts under the name ‘Adeyinka Grandson', were assessed by a specialist group of officers in the Met's Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit (CTIRU).They found the posts, which had commentary encouraging attacks against certain ethnic groups, were in potential breach of the law .He was initially arrested at his home address in August 2019, with officers searching three properties linked to him and seizing various digital devices.Shoyemi was initially charged with six counts of inciting racial hatred and he was released on bail with a condition not to post any more social media posts which were threatening, abusive or insulting to any ethnic groups. He was later rearrested for disregarding the bail condition. Shoyemi was sentenced to four-and-a-half years' behind bars on Thursday. He was found guilty on November 30 of eight counts of inciting racial hatred after a trial at Southwark Crown Court.Commander Richard Smith, head of the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, said: “Our Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit – the first of its kind to be established anywhere in the world – was instrumental in identifying Shoyemi and his activity.“Over the last ten years, the CTIRU has been at the forefront of getting harmful content removed from the internet, and detecting and investigating potential terrorist-related activity online.“We continue to need the help and support of the public and I would encourage anyone who comes across material or posts that could be related to terrorism or violent extremist activity to report it to us, so that our specialist officers can take action where necessary.”

Today's Mold Talks guest is Erik Johnson, a U.S. veteran, advocate, podcast host, author, mold revolutionist, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome survivor. Erik has been an invaluable asset in pushing for change thanks to his deep history with both mold illness and chronic fatigue syndrome. Throughout his life, he's experienced mold exposure on several occasions and the drastic impact it has on health.Using this experience, Erik has dedicated his life to pushing the line forward when it comes to mold awareness, research, and related illnesses. After witnessing countless individuals suffer through the debilitating symptoms of exposure while still seeing little to no action taken to address this ongoing issue, he realized that change wasn't going to come easily. Still, those dealing with chronic illness deserve help, which is why he's spent years of his life researching, sharing his story, advocating for change, and shining a massive light on this worldwide issue.Today's Talk:In this episode of Mold Talks, Michael Rubino had the opportunity to speak with Erik Johnson and hear this mold revolutionist's amazing journey of living with exposure. His journey with mold began after his family started managing a hotel at an old stagecoach stop on the Sonora Pass in 1964. Erik said that he immediately realized he was in trouble after developing a list of chronic symptoms. Over time, his entire childhood would be impacted, from lack of energy and sociability to development and neurological issues.Eventually, they would find mold inside the walls of the hotel. That discovery introduced Erik to the idea of mold and started him on a journey towards awareness. For the next few decades, he would continue to experience mold in various places during his life after that initial onset of sensitivity. Even joining the army and moving to a base in Germany presented certain mold-related issues. A leak in the basement armory led to not only Erik experiencing chronic symptoms but his entire unit as well. While he battled exposure for some time, he eventually realized that he wouldn't be able to reenlist because of his failing health. In the following years, Erik would continue to notice "sick building" after "sick building" and the effects they had on the people inside. This was the initial spark for becoming a mold revolutionist. With a built-in sensitivity radar for mold in his own body, we slowly began to consider whether any of these buildings also had mold. At the time, he also became Dr. Paul Cheney's very first mystery illness patient during the Lake Tahoe epidemic in 1985. It was while trying to find answers during this outbreak that he realized how skewed the world was when it came to mold exposure and related illnesses. While they acknowledged the validity of a new condition, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, they failed to research and associate the illness with mold exposure. The entire scenario led to Erik's life's work in researching, advocating, and embracing being a mold revolutionist. Now, he spends his time starting conversations, sharing his story, writing, hosting his podcast Exposing Mold, and various other actions to shine a light on the mold epidemic.https://www.themoldmedic.com/https://www.allamericanrestoration.com/Learn more about Erik Johnson at:https://exposingmold.com/https://www.instagram.com/exposingmold/https://www.facebook.com/exposingmold

This episode is about Chapter 4, an excerpt from Pierre-Joseph Proudhon's "The Confessions of a Revolutionist", published in 1850. Proudhon was the first person to call himself an anarchist, and is also considered the founder of Mutualism, an ideology which Proudhon thought was "the synthesis of communism and property". This brings up some meta-commentary on the differences between "left anarchists" and people like Noam Chomsky. We map out some of the differences that seem to reveal large rifts between different types of anarchists and statists.

This week marks a historical landmark....as Conor Tallon found out from Crawford art gallery curator Michael WaldronThe Widow (Mrs. Terence MacSwiney, Lady Mayoress of Cork 1920) by John Lavery is a remarkably stark portrait. Only the face and neck of its subject emerge from the background and dark clothing. Her parted red lips, brimming eyes, and flesh described in light and shadow convey dual emotions – mourning and hope.By the time this portrait was painted a century ago, in 1921, Muriel Murphy MacSwiney (1892-1982) had been catapulted onto the world stage in the aftermath of her husband's death by hunger strike. In that same year, she attended the Abbey Theatre's production of Terence MacSwiney's most prophetic play, The Revolutionist. Such was the sympathy for her loss and Ireland's independence that, in 1922, she became the first woman to be granted the freedom of New York City.Muriel had first met Terence in 1915 at the home of Aloys and Tilly Fleischmann. They married against her family's wishes on 9 June 1917, the day after she came into her inheritance, and their daughter Máire was born a year later. In her widowhood, Muriel continued her interest in left-wing politics and, in 1926, had a second daughter, Alix, with the French Marxist academic Pierre Kaan (1903-1945).In 1928, this portrait was donated by the artist along with his Sketch for the Funeral of Terence MacSwiney (1920).The Widow (Mrs. Terence MacSwiney, Lady Mayoress of Cork 1920) by John Lavery is featured in CITIZEN NOWHERE | CITIZEN SOMEWHERE: The Imagined Nation until 5 April. Many people have turned to their own or community gardens during this period, growing vegetables and flowers, nourishing body and soul. Gardening centers have been among the first essential businesses to reopen. Sales of seeds have soared. Piet Oudolf isn't surprised.” Piet Oudolf ("Peet Ow-dolf") quotes from the transcript: "I think every day is an experience, because there's always something you will like, and it's not only about the plants. It's also about the light and the movement. Once you touch the plants and just start to work with them, there's a big chance that you get lost in the world of plants and that you want to experience more of gardening. You can think while you're gardening. You can think about life and how to follow up after this crisis. But at least people want to go to places where I normally would go to, to gardens and to parks. And I think that people will realize that we, as human beings, need that, to feel good. What I say for people that just start gardening, I think anything that you see at the garden center that you like can be a good start — to become a serious gardener."   Alright, that's it for today's gardening news. Jeanne was the first woman to have circumnavigated the globe as part of the expedition, which was led by Louis Antoine de Bougainville.  Beret was able to join the expedition after posing as a valet to the expedition's naturalist: Philibert Commerçon. Before the expedition, Jeanne had been employed as Commerçon's housekeeper. A few years later, his wife died, and Jeanne took over the management of the household and began a personal relationship with Commerçon. Commerçon had poor health, and it was likely that he needed Jeanne to join him on the expedition because he needed her assistance. Jeanne was an excellent botanist in her own right. When the ship stopped in Rio de Janeiro, an old leg injury prevented Commerçon from collecting specimens. Thus, it was Jeanne who ventured out into the tropics and returned with the lovely tropical vine that would be named to honor the expedition's commander: Bougainvillea.   1810  Today is the birthday of one of America's most prominent horticulturalists – Horatio Hollis Hunnewell. Horatio was staggeringly wealthy. He was a railroad financier. But he also had a lifelong love of nature and gardening. When Horatio purchased over 40 acres of land along the eastern and southern shores of Lake Waban ("Wah-bin"), he built a magnificent estate there. He had married Isabella Pratt Wells, and he decided to call his impressive home Wellesley in honor of his wife's maiden name. When it came time for the nearby town and college to settle on a name, they also chose the name Wellesley after discussing the matter with Horatio, who happened to be the most generous benefactor of the city. The Hunnewell estate was so large that when the Hunnewell children grew up, seven of the nine had homes built on the property - right next to their parent's original house. Aside from the impressive homes, Horatio added many magnificent features to the estate, including a pinetum with over 325 specimens of conifers. Hollis Honeywell made the following remark in 1899 about his trees, "No Vanderbilt, with all his great wealth, can possess one of these [trees] for the next 50 years, for could not be grown in less time than that." And, Horatio also installed the very first Topiary Garden in America at Wellesley. He referred to it as the Italian Garden, and it was ideally situated along the shore of Lake Waban. When it came to the Topiary Garden, Horatio went all out. Whenever he had guests, Horatio would have them hop aboard a large authentic Italian Gondola boat complete with an authentically dressed gondola man. After they glided up to the Topiary Gardens, they would stop and take a tour. Horatio's shores rivaled that of Lake Como in northern Italy. It's difficult to fathom how much attention this one-of-a-kind garden received from the public. Thousands of visitors from all over the country came to Wellesley just to see the topiary garden firsthand. Many more took in its beauty through photographs and engravings published in the most popular periodicals of the time. To this day — a century and a half later — the Hunnewell Topiary Garden is among the most spectacular sites in the region. There are a few stories about Horatio I discovered during my research. The first is that Horatio and his friend Nathaniel Thayer Jr. brought the game of tennis to America. The second story is that Horatio was the first person to cultivate and popularize rhododendrons In the United States.   1864  Today is the anniversary of the death of the botanist Benjamin Lincoln Robinson. In 1892, Benjamin was appointed the curator of the Asa Gray Herbarium at Harvard. When Benjamin took over, both the herbarium and the library were in dire straits. Benjamin brought in funding and expanded the herbarium. Today, the Gray Herbarium and library are still housed at Harvard at 22 Divinity Ave. In 1899, the first issue of the New England Botanical Club's journal, Rhodora, was published. And, Rhodora's first editor was Benjamin.   1881  Today is the anniversary of the death of the botanist and the father of British plant geography Hewett Cottrell Watson. In recognition of his significant contributions, the botanical society of the British Isles named their journal Watsonia. Beginning in 1834, Hewett was one of the first botanists to research plant evolution. Hewett's work also paved the way for a new science now known as ecology. When Darwin created his theory of evolution, he was standing on the shoulders of curious early evolutionists like Hewett. Darwin's popularity and success overshadowed the folks like Hewett, who came before him. Yet, it's evident that when Hewett read Darwin's Origin, his reaction was one of wonder... and also self-reflection. He spent his adult life trying to reach Darwin's conclusion. Now, as an older man, he could see the match he had lit being passed to a true torch-bringer. After reading the origin, Hewett wrote to Darwin. Hewett's letter is a part proud dad, part awed fan, and yet, he still takes time to advise Darwin on areas to improve or take heed. In two different passages, Hewett points out that Darwin had succeeded where he had stopped short, saying Darwin had figured out the quo modo or the method to knit the strings of the theory of evolution together. Hewett's letter to Darwin is quite something to read – even after all this time: 21 Nov 1859 My dear Sir Once [I started] to read the ‘Origin’ I could not rest [until] I had galloped through [all of it]. I shall now begin to re-read it more deliberately. Meantime I am tempted to write you [my] first impressions… 1st. Your leading idea will assuredly become recognized as an established truth in science, i.e. “natural selection”. (It has the characteristics of all great natural truths, clarifying what was obscure, simplifying what was intricate, adding greatly to previous knowledge). You are the greatest Revolutionist in natural history of this century, if not of all centuries. 2d. You will perhaps need … to limit or modify, ... the principle of ‘natural selection’. 3d. Now [that] these novel views are brought… before the scientific public, it seems truly remarkable how [we didn’t see them sooner].. A quarter-century ago, you & I must have [had]the same state of mind... But you were able to see & work out [the theory], … while I failed to grasp it. ... How greatly this...will shock the ideas of many men! very sincerely | Hewett C. Watson to C. Darwin | Esq. Darwin Correspondence Project, “Letter no. 2540,” accessed on 26 April 2019, http://www.darwinproject.ac.uk/DCP-LETT-2540   1895  On this day, a photo of the horticulturist and Reverend William T. Hutchins of Indian Orchard, Massachusetts, appeared in the Springfield Republican. William is remembered for his book called "All About Sweet Peas," published in 1892 by the Burpee Seed Company. Five years later, William wrote another book for Burpee calledSweet Peas Up-to-Date.William's writings were used as promo material for Burpee, and customers positively received them. Incredibly, Burpee distributed fifty thousand copies of "All About Sweet Peas." In August of 1898, The Star-Gazette out of Elmira New York reported on a talk that William had given about the history and culture of sweet pea. “Mr. Hutchins said that the flower is a native of Sicily, and is widely cultivated there, but in late years it has come into popular favor in America, and is now raised in nearly every part of the country.  The speaker mentioned some of the rare varieties and told how they are obtained…  He also gave a most interesting description of the gardens of Mr. Eckford in England, whose cultivation [of] about seventy-five of ...the choicest sweet peas have been given to the flower lovers of the world.” And, in 1950, Charles H. Curtis, the editor of the Gardeners' Chronicle, wrote, “Fifty years ago, a parson from Indian Orchard, Massachusetts, stood on the platform in the Lecture Hall of the Crystal Palace. He was the Rev. W. T. Hutchins, an enthusiastic grower of Sweet Peas, who had a voice as sweet and persuasive as the fragrance of his subject. I can hear him now.”  One of my favorite articles featuring William was published in The Atlanta Constitution on March 31, 1991. The title of the article was "Oh, Sweet Peas, Please Climb Above My knees" and was written by Laura Martin. Laura dug up this quote by William, who said that the sweet pea has "a fragrance like the universal gospel." And, regarding the sweet pea, Laura wrote, “Finding a plant with outstanding beauty and fragrance is a treat. Many roses, of course, offer this combination, but easier and far less demanding are old-fashioned sweet peas, which will trail and climb in your garden while emitting a delicious scent. Common name: Sweet Pea . Botanical name: Lathyrus odoratus.” The Greek word lathyros means pea or pulse, and the Latin word odoratus means fragrant. Today, Japanese varieties have the most abundant blooms, and some Australian varieties are frilly. Sweet peas are a long-lasting vase flower, which makes them quite popular with florists and brides. Finally, in terms of floriography, or the language of flowers, sweet peas convey bliss and pleasure. They also mean saying goodbye after having a good time. Nothing says thank you like sweet peas. Finally, of the sweet pea, John Keats wrote: Here are sweet peas, on tiptoe for a flight;  With wings of gentle flush o'er delicate white,  And taper fingers catching at all things,  To bind them all about with tiny rings.   Unearthed Words July 27 is Take Your Houseplants for a Walk Day - a silly, light-hearted day that brought to mind these nonsense poems.   One fine October morning In September, last July The sun lay thick upon the ground The snow shone in the sky The flowers were singing gaily The birds were full in bloom So I went down to the cellar To clean the upstairs room — Anonymous   There should be no monotony In studying your botany; It helps to train And spur the brain-- Unless you haven't gotany. Bernadette was a professional gardener and urban gardening advocate. She founded the Greening of Harlem Coalition in 1989. Her efforts transformed Harlem, bringing flower gardens and green spaces to areas previously covered by concrete and neglect. It was Bernadette Cozart who said, “Instead of taking children on field trips to see farms and gardens, why not bring nature into the community? I don't think it's fair that they should have to go outside the community to have that experience of seeing things grow.”
