POPULARITY
The massive variety of human sexual interests is a little mind-boggling. As what we consider to be sexually typical continues to be expanded and shaped by the internet and popular culture, psychologists are making efforts to research kinks and members of the kink community like never before. Join Ella Rhodes in conversation with Liam Wignall (Senior Lecturer at Brighton University and committee member of the BPS's Sexualities Section) about his work exploring community in these underground spaces, links with neurodivergence, and the ways modern technology is transforming the scene — as well as research into it. We also chat with Dr Kate Marks, a Clinical Psychologist who works with those involved in kink communities, about her impressions of the emotions, social consequences, and even therapeutic echoes that run through these subversive engagements. This episode discusses sex, sexuality, and the stigma and struggles that can come alongside it. As such, it may not be suitable for all audiences. Listener discretion is advised. This month Money on the Left is joined by the folks behind the MUSICat project, an online music streaming service for public libraries designed to share heterogenous local music with local community members. We speak with Preston Austin and Kelly Hiser from Rabble, the company behind MUSICat, as well as with Racquel (“Rocky”) Mann, who coordinates the MUSICat service with Edmontonians as Digital Initiatives Librarian for Edmonton Public Library. Launched by the Madison Public Library in 2014, MUSICat has since been adopted by public libraries, including in Pittsburgh, Nashville, Fort Worth, New Orleans, Edmonton and elsewhere. Artists who share music via MUSICat are paid for their work with library funding and are granted other substantial forms of support through the library system. MUSICat serves as an inspirational model for mobilizing public institutions and forms that can provision communities in diverse and locally sensitive ways. Exploring what we at Money on the Left have called a hermeneutics of provision, we affirm public libraries' critical function as creative stewards and producers of regional public cultures. Special thanks to Edmonton artist Jill van Stanton for the album art used in our episode graphic. Thanks also to the Edmonton musicians, whose work is spread liberally throughout this episode. Featured tunes include: Shout Out Out Out Out, “Never the Same Way Twice”; Souljah Fyah, “8 Days of Summer”; Farhad Khosravi, “Escape”; Denim Daddies, “Roadrunner”; and The Tsunami Brothers, “Stink Bug.”* Thanks to the Money on the Left production team: William Saas (audio editor), Mercedes Ohlen (transcription), & Emily Reynolds of The Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art (graphic art)Visit our Patreon page here: https://www.patreon.com/MoLsuperstructure

So what are these "underrated recovery hacks", you ask? The majority of people I speak to who are struggling with BPD symptoms tell me how badly they want to change. They know their "toxic" patterns. They know the cycles they continue to repeat that continue to sabotage their change at peace and intimacy. They KNOW. But here's the thing: it's really f*cking hard to change your behavior. Let me tell you the biggest lesson I've learned in my journey so far: changing your beliefs = changing your behaviors. In today's episode, we'll challenge a lot of the deeply held beliefs that might be holding you back. I'll discuss why my current social media break might become a permanent decision, how major social networks are transitioning from “social media” to “recommendation media,” and how this can affect our emotional regulation. I'll also address a recent (somewhat critical) review on the podcast from someone who finds empowerment in the BPD label. This review inspired me to expand upon why I will continue to be outspoken regarding the (potentially) harmful and damaging impact of BPD diagnoses and how our cognitive biases can get in the way of our recovery process. I finish by discussing a few voicemails and emails from listeners. Topics include improving communication skills, developing a “growth mindset,” stopping obsessing over our partner's social media activity, and starting fresh in a relationship after BPD symptoms have eroded trust and intimacy.

Episode Recorded October 18, 2021. Kiko Denzer deftly mixes clay, food, and carving together with a dash of philosophy to bake in the fires of this next conversation. It's a departure from our typical format, but Kiko has a welcomed perspective of craft and lifeways that doesn't often show up in the craft world. He has spent most of his life teaching others how to build earth ovens, creating sustainable buildings and publishing books. Throughout the show we visit the role of craft in everyday life, the value of investing in one's local community, and most importantly, how we're all just walking bellies. If you don't know about the organization, they help homeless individuals and those facing relational poverty rebuild their social support systems through connecting them with loved ones and friends. Emily had a conversation with us about the different ways Miracle Messages re-connects these individuals with their loved ones. Some of the ways they do this are through video calls, text messages and mainly phone calls. This is a great way to help these individuals feel human, seen and valued. This is Episode 23 of PsychCrunch, the podcast from the British Psychological Society’s Research Digest. In this episode, Emily Reynolds, staff writer at Research Digest, explores modern psychology’s relationship with race and representation. It’s well-known that psychology has a generalisability problem, with studies overwhelmingly using so-called “WEIRD” participants: those who are Western and educated and from industrialised, rich and democratic societies. But how does that shape the assumptions we make about participants of different racial identities or cultures? And how can top-tier psychology journals improve diversity among not only participants but also authors and editors? Our guests, in order of appearance, are Dr Bobby Cheon, Assistant Professor at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and Dr Steven O. Roberts, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. Episode credits: Presented and produced by Emily Reynolds. Script edits by Matthew Warren. Mixing and editing by Jeff Knowler. PsychCrunch theme music by Catherine Loveday and Jeff Knowler. Art work by Tim Grimshaw. Research mentioned in this episode includes: How USA-Centric Is Psychology? An Archival Study of Implicit Assumptions of Generalizability of Findings to Human Nature Based on Origins of Study Samples Racial Inequality in Psychological Research: Trends of the Past and Recommendations for the Future Toward a psychology of Homo sapiens: Making psychological science more representative of the human population
