Our yearly show with Engaged Family Gaming, where we talk about what video games might be on your kids’ wishlists. 00:00 Fact for 412 412 is the area code for Pittsburgh (and they seem really proud of it). The most people washing dishes simultaneously is 412 and was achieved by Henkel (Algeria) and Pril-Isis, in Algiers, Algeria, on 16 June 2017. https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/112306-most-people-washing-dishes-simultaneously Sponsor Message If you want some help finding solid footing underneath you, or help finding the right step to leap to the next level, head to firstmovefinancial.com/familygamers to schedule a quick phone call and see how First Move can help. 0:04:30 What We’ve Been Playing – with November Monthly Report! Anitra: 54 plays of 28 unique games. H-index: 4 (Chit Chat, Trio, INK, Leaders, Odin) – and Andrew is the most played-with person by a huge margin! Andrew: 40 plays of 18 unique games. H-index 4 (Chit Chat, Leaders, Odin, Trio). 35 games together with Anitra! Pretty much everything was 2 players or 5 players. Check out our recent reviews for INK and Odin.LeadersJungo (check out our review!)Logic & LoreS’mores Galore Roast & WriteFor Sale 0:10:40 The Family Gamers Community Welcome to our newest community members on Facebook! In these darkest days of the year, let’s share some light with each other. Stop in and say hello. #Backtalk We asked what you like to do with your family that ISN’T boardgames. A few of you answered on the #backtalk channel on the Discord and in our Facebook community. 0:19:00 Video Games with Engaged Family Gaming Stephen Duetzmann helps us with the best video games to give this year, via the Engaged Family Gaming holiday list. But first we talk about videogames we’ve been playing: Dogpile (on Steam)Metroid Prime 4Dredge (more info)Hollow Knight: Silksong (which Andrew just finished – more info) 0:36:00 Consoles PS5 or Xbox Series X – They are very expensive and not focused on family-friendly titles. Not recommended unless you really want it for games you can’t get elsewhere. 0:37:15 Multi-platform Games Civilization VII – the rough edges have been sanded off. Pick a leader, but jump to different civilizations in each age. Plays pretty well on any console and on PC, but if you have a Switch 2, buy it for that system, so you can use the mouse controller. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown – turn based tactical game that still forces you to move forward like a typical side-scrolling brawler. Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar – cozy “farm and town” game with engine-building. Has a week cycle as well as a day cycle. Sonic Racing: Crossworlds – good if you don’t have Mario Kart. Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted 0:45:00 Playstation Exclusives “Playstation didn’t put out anything that didn’t involve mass-murder.” Ghost of Yotei – only for grownups, but gorgeous. nothing else really new, but Astro Bot, Final Fantasy VII, and Spider-man 2 are still great choices. 0:46:50 Xbox Exclusives Also not much new that isn’t “headshot-central”. But Star Wars Outlaws is updated and even better than it was last year. 0:47:45 Nintendo Switch / Switch 2 Both consoles are good choices: Switch 2 is very cool. Original Switch is the value choice, and those games will still work if you decide to upgrade later to the Switch 2. Mario Kart World Donkey Kong Bananza Also recommended: Metroid Prime 4 – if you liked Metroid Primeand Kirby Air Riders “If you get a Switch 2, don’t limit yourself to just Switch 2 games” – get older original Switch games, too. A lot of them have been updated for the better graphics of the Switch 2, and they’ll be great! 0:53:00 Online Play and Online Sales You need to do the math and decide if these are worth it for your family. Good alternative to buying a single game if you don’t know what game your recipient would want. Nintendo Switch Online – $80 for up to 8 users (don’t all have to be in the same location), even cheaper if you only need one user. This is absolutely necessary to play online AND gives you access to a bunch of older games. XBox Game Pass – probably not worth it JUST for kids. Worth it for Andrew & Anitra, where we have many people all taking advantage. PS Plus – again, needed for online play. Minimum $80/year for the Essentials plan. As always: If you're buying a console for a holiday present, do NOT leave it in the box! Don't forget to set it up before Christmas! (Plug in, connect to the internet, download updates, install a game or two. You might need to update the firmware on the controller.) It's a much more effective surprise if it's ready to play on Christmas morning. And don’t forget about free to play games like Fortnite or Disney Speed Storm! Those are good to add ahead of time so they can play right away. And don't forget about The Family Gamers holiday gift guide, too! We're dropping this episode ON TIME in order to let you know that Grand Theft Auto 6 has been delayed. What can we possibly do to fill ONE ENTIRE YEAR until it's released? Well, off the top of my head: we could play a bit of Simpsons Fortnite, we could try the demo for Dogpile, we could review the new Tears of the Kingdom prequel Hyrule Warriors - Age of Imprisonment, and then we could record a podcast about all of those things... That should take us 365 days or so, right? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The world went topsy turvy this week as Halo was announced for the Playstation 5 and Ben was in Adelaide. Thankfully, one of those things has been rectified and so we're back together chatting about recent games news and reviewing our new obsession Ball X Pit, as well as Once Upon A Katamari, Keeper, Cloverpit, and the demo for Dogpile. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Omar Kelly joins and tries to sift through the Dolphins struggles. Meanwhile, the national media continues to criticize the Miami Dolphins and it seems Grier, McDaniel, and Tua's days might be numbered with the Dolphins.
Tedy Bruschi is the latest national media member to come out and rip the Miami Dolphins, specifically Mike McDaniel saying the man that is going to take you to championships is the exact opposite of McDaniel.
This week on Thumb Cramps, Oct! New Release Tobers! cannot be stopped as they're joined by Ethan Taylor to look at Yooka-Replaylee for the Nintendo Switch 2, Ball x Pit for the PS5 and a whole bunch of demos for Steam Next Fest (Reanimal, Don't Stop! Girlypop!, The Seance of Blake Manor, Skate Story, Tingus Goose, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Painkiller, Dogpile). Stephen A Smith joins in on the Dolphins dogpile saying they need to fire Mike McDaniel. Joe and Hollywood discuss whether Tua has lost respect of the locker room.
The NFL looks a little different than expected with the Colts and the Buccaneers at the top of the NFL with 5-1 records. The local and national media continue to rip the Miami Dolphins after their 1-5 start and Tua's continuous controversial comments. Hollywood's Headlines includes Belichick's clownshow, college basketball's preseason top 25, and Taylor Swift's new docuseries.
This week on Thumb Cramps, Oct! New Release Tobers! continues with all three hosts, Joel, Jackson and Ruby Innes, finally together in the same room to check out the freshest releases in gaming! Join them as they look at Pac-Man World 2: Re-PAC for the Steam Deck, Megabonk for the Steam Deck and Baby Steps for the PS5 plus maybe a little hidden review for the keen eared listeners out there. On the roadways, the highways, communication with the other drivers of multi-ton vehicles is an imperative! As you look at the steering wheel, on YOUR left had side of the steering column is a stick…a MAGIC TALKING STICK! When that stick is pushed down, it talks to the OTHER DRIVERS on the road communicating your intention to turn LEFT. Cool, right? I KNOW! If YOU push that selfsame stick UP, it lets the others driving near and around you that you intend to turn RIGHT! Most of these magic sticks will turn themselves off once the maneuver is done. If YOURS doesn't have that powerful a-magic left in it; help it out by returning it to its center position after making your turn. This will also communicate to the drivers around you that you truly have an idea as to what you are doing behind the wheel. If not, we have to figure you are just an asshat! It had to be said! After Mark's time with COVID, the first day he was free to go outside, the area was covered with the smoke of distant wildfires. Another bout of smoke has rolled in to the Twin Cities just in time for the release of this episode. The club spends this Nice Thinking episode talking about the making of Glom, and discussing their feelings about pitching and publishing board games. They discover that Mark and Stephen dread pitching, but Ellen thinks it can be fun (it's her superpower). This section is about Dale, who edited this episode.I did write most of the Glom cards, but that was really playing to my superpower of brainstorming lots of ideas, very quickly. The club mentioned...that I have a full time job - TRUE...that I have to deal with the club's crap - TRUE...cats - TRUE - I volunteer at a cat shelterFor 'Dogpile!' the game - I thought up 100 dog names - EASY and I have been thinking up ~20 cat names a week (my superpower right?)Finally, they share the story of how Mark no longer edits every episode, and that's how Dale got to title this episode and add a section of episode notes about cats.GLOMGlom launched on June 14th, 2023. It is available for purchase now!Our official Glom hompage. This section is about cats. It's kitten season and the cat shelters are full - please consider adopting a cat (or other animal, but you should really consider a cat or two). The city of Minneapolis Animal Care and Control has been waving cat adoption fees on select days. Every government on the planet announced last week an ambition to regulate artificial intelligence. Nate Jones and Jamil Jaffer take us through the announcements. What's particularly discouraging is the lack of imagination, as governments dusted off their old prejudices to handle this new problem. Europe is obsessed with data protection, the Biden administration just wants to talk and wait and talk some more, while China must have asked ChatGPT to assemble every regulatory proposal for AI ever made by anyone and translate it into Chinese law. Meanwhile, companies trying to satisfy everyone are imposing weird limits on their AI, such as Microsoft's rule that asking for an image of Taiwan's flag is a violation of its terms of service. (For the record, so is asking for China's flag but not asking for an American or German flag.) Matthew Heiman and Jamil take us through the strange case of the airman who leaked classified secrets on Discord. Jamil thinks we brought this on ourselves by not taking past leaks sufficiently seriously. Jamil and I cover the imminent Montana statewide ban on TikTok. He thinks it's a harbinger; I think it may be a distraction that, like Trump's ban, produces more hostile judicial rulings. Nate unpacks the California Court of Appeals' unpersuasive opinion on law enforcement use of geofencing warrants. Matthew and I dig into the unanimous Supreme Court decision that should have independent administrative agencies like the Federal Trade Commission and Securities and Exchange Commission trembling. The court held that litigants don't need to wend their way through years of proceedings in front of the agencies before they can go to court and challenge the agencies' constitutional status. We both think that this is just the first shoe to drop. The next will be a full-bore challenge to the constitutionality of agencies beholden neither to the executive or Congress. If the FTC loses that one, I predict, the old socialist realist statue “Man Controlling Trade” that graces its entry may be replaced by one that PETA and the Chamber of Commerce would like better. Bing's Image Creator allowed me to illustrate that possible outcome. See attached. In quick hits: I update listeners on the fight over renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and the FBI's search of its 702 database for messages about Congressman Darin LaHood (R-Ill.). It's far from a scandal, and it may show that the whole effort to treat such searches as shocking privacy intrusions is bogus. Hackers have claimed deep access to Western Digital systems. The good news is that they seem unable to encrypt it all, so they're relying on doxing threats to earn the ransom they want. The Indian government has given itself authority to “fact check and order the deletion of social media posts. Nobody thinks that's a good idea, but when I ask whether it's all that different from the CDC/social media alliance that suppressed true information during COVID times, Jamil disagrees. If you've missed our conservative catfights, this is a taste of things to come. It's our second climb into the scruff as your nice hosts continue development on "Dogpile!" We've updated the rules and did a lot of work toward defining the properties of a full prototype deck, consisting of 100, or 150... or maybe 250 unique cards? However many it ends up being, we're looking forward to part 3! Prompt Keep working on "Dogpile!" Game type Card game Player count 2-4 Setup Shuffle a standard 52-card deck.Deal 5 cards to each player.Set the remaining cards aside; this is the draft deckFor the first round, assign the "player one" indicator to the person who most recently played with a dog.TermsTurn: One player's action.Round: Once around the table (each player takes an action).Draft Deck: The pile of dog cards you draw from each round.Dogpile: This is where the dogs that you're able to recruit into your pack will end up.Pack Leader: The card drawn from the Draft Deck once per Round.Player One: The first player to lay their cards face-down next to the Pack Leader card in each round. The First Player status is indicated with a First Player token that rotates clockwise at the start of each round. Strays: The discard pile. Rules Objective: Get as many dogs into the Dogpile as possible! How to playDraw a card from the draft deck and place it face-up in the center of the table. This is the Pack Leader card.Without talking about what's in their hands or what cards they're playing, all players select and number of cards from their hand to lay face-down around the Pack Leader. Each player lays their cards face-down in clockwise order, starting with the First Player.Players can lay down any number of cards up to the full complement of their hand.If a player decides to not lay down any cards (skipping their turn, essentially), then skip to Step 3 below. Remaining players' turns are forfeit. After all players have put their selected cards face-down, all players reveal their cards at the same time.Once all cards are revealed, determine whether the group of dogs (the Pack) will join the Dogpile or become Strays. For the pack to join the Dogpile, every revealed card on the table (players' face-up cards and the Pack Leader card) must be physically "connect" to form a single unbroken shape, consisting entirely of legal connections. As of the recording of episode 275, cards can be connected by number or suit.Cards connected horizontally must be 1 number different (up or down) from the connected card. (Numerical values are 1-13 where Ace = 1 and King = 13).Cards connected vertically must be of the same suit.Cards cannot connect diagonally, and if two cards are physically touching, they must legally connect. The two Jokers are "wild" in that they can adopt any suit or number, but like a Scrabble tile, all cards connected to a Joker must connect based on a single, newly adopted value.Clear the table by placing the group of dogs in the Dogpile, in the Strays. Optionally, the pack of Strays may be tossed randomly about the room. Then, begin the next round. At the start of each subsequent round, players refresh their hands up to 5 with newly-drawn cards, and the Player One token is passed clockwise.Continue steps 1-6 above until the timer rings. How many dogs did you get in your Dogpile?
