Everything Is Beautiful and Everything Hurts by Josie Shapiro. Winner of the inaugural Allen and Unwin Commercial Fiction prize to try to encourage and recognise more local commercial fiction. A very worthy winner - I loved it - about Mickey Bloom who's a shy, awkward, dyslexic kid who doesn't fit in anywhere - and then she discovers running and it's the one thing she's good at. Eventually though, it all wears her don and she gives up, until after the death of her mother when it becomes cathartic. Set against the background of the Auckland marathon it's beautifully done - I'm not a runner, never have been and never will be but I loved it.  The Wager by David Grann. Nonfiction - In 1740, a British Man O' War named HMS Wager set sail in search of a Spanish galleon reputed to be carrying vast amounts of treasure. An initial crew of 250 men set out but after ferocious storms around Cape Horn, running aground off Patagonia, starvation, disease and bitter infighting, only 145 survived – and many more died as one group abandoned the other and both went on to further hardship. I used to wonder at the decay of popular music in all of its forms. Why wasn’t anyone writing beautiful music? It seemed almost as though they had lost the ability. And then I read what Robert Bork wrote about the music in question in Slouching Towards Gomorrah: The obscenity of thought and word is staggering, but also notable is the deliberate rejection of any attempt to achieve artistic distinction or even mediocrity. And suddenly, it all became clear to me.It is not merely that they can no longer write music as such. It is even that they will not. The problem is that they have come to hate beauty, to despise art. There is a spirit of pure hatred in what is called art and music today. For decades now, artists and musicians have tried to shock the bourgeoisie with trash only to find the bourgeoisie adapting its taste to trash and becoming, now, nearly un-shockable. The objective is not to advance art. It is to trash art, to make art ridiculous.Rollo May said that when men lose the power to love, they often substitute what he called power over or dominance. And there can be no doubt that many have lost the power to love. And everything that was beautiful, we have come to hate. It doesn’t take a very vivid imagination to grasp what is going on when an artist wants to urinate on Christ, to throw dung at the mother of Jesus. There is a hatred there of staggering dimensions. And it is a hatred that is very old. A hatred that probably predates man’s presence on the earth. Whence cometh this chaotic, destructive, hateful, violent, excrement-obsessed spirit? More important, where is it going?

Ray Stevens is known mostly as a musical funnyman, no surprise really considering the novelty songs that he took to the top of the charts during a successful string of hits that dominated the radio waves throughout the 1960s. These days, songs such as “Ahab the Arab,” “The Streak” and “Gitarzan” might not find favor with those of a politically correct persuasion, but back in the day, they established Stevens as an artist with a clear affinity for sarcasm and satire. Indeed, after a career that spans some 65 years, Stevens remains committed to the cause of keeping his listeners entertained and engaged. After beginning his musical journey strictly as a songwriter, he got his big break when he was signed to Mercury Records in 1961, and it was there that he gained fame not only for the aforementioned comedy classics, but also with several “serious” songs as well — among them, “Everything Is Beautiful” and “Misty.” They were both big crossover hits that helped to establish him as both a country superstar and a reliable purveyor of pop songs suitable to be shared with any type of audience. These days, at the age of 82, Stevens remains as active as ever. I question whether believing that everything happens for a reason is really just a manic and delusional avoidance of truth, honesty and sadness. Earlier this year, New York-born Puerto Rican MC Princess Nokia (real name: Destiny Nicole Frasqueri) released not one, but two albums: the perfectly-titled Everything Sucks and Everything is Beautiful. Finding the beauty in everyday situations can help you hear God’s message clearer. Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” After a death of a close one, which Robby is currently going through, finding beauty helps him get through tough times. People reaching the age of Medicare enrollment sometimes have a hard time seeing the beauty of it, and it can hurt them in the long run.   According to Hans, people already on Medicare don’t really complain. They see the beauty because it is paying their bills and they are receiving great coverage. People not yet on Medicare experience confusion and become angry, which makes it much harder to be able to make informed decisions regarding Medicare. They are failing to see the good that Medicare is going to provide. While it is not necessary to ignore the bad aspects, especially the costs, it is necessary to remember that there is always some good. One “good” thing Medicare did for Robby is cover his father's $175,000 hosipital bill before he passed!   Robby talks about how his father did not appreciate Medicare when he had it because he was paying too much for his supplement. He didn’t know he could switch his supplement 365 days a year; he kept the same supplement throughout his life that he signed up for when he turned 65. It is so important to remember to shop around constantly, Hans recommends every 2-3 years, to make sure you are not overpaying and can see the good in Medicare.  It is also important to have this conversation with your parents.
