Brought you in partnership with Budget Tyres Autocentre and 360 Chartered Accountants. We are delighted that the latest former Robin to join us on the Red Robin HeritageCast is Kris Welham. Kris Welham was born in Hull in March 1987 and came through the club's Academy set up to make his first team debut at Leigh towards the end of the 2006 promotion-winning season. With a home play-off semi-final just about in the bag, coach Justin Morgan elected to rest some first team regulars for the trip to Leigh, and both Kris and brother Liam were given their debuts on the wings that day – the only instance in Rovers' history of two brothers making their debuts in the same game. From there Kris went on the represent the club with great aplomb with Chairman Neil Hudgill stating that 'not only has he been a tremendous player for Hull Kingston Rovers, he's also been a great ambassador for the club.' In all, Kris Welham made 191 appearances for Rovers, scoring 102 tries. He was a strong and pacey centre, who for several seasons was Rovers most potent attacking threat in the three-quarter line. He has made most Super League appearances for Rovers, 165, and has scored most tries, 89. After leaving Rovers for pastures new Kris has gone on to forge a successful career with him playing for Salford in the 2019 Challenge Cup Final and Super League Grand Final. He recently signed for Sheffield Eagles after playing for Featherstone Rovers in the 2021 'Million' pound game and combines playing part time and working as a pest controller.

Cal, Ben and Eithan return with Episode 7 of the Rugby League review, welcoming special guest Ben Jones-Bishop of the York City Knights onto the podcast prior to his trip to Wembley this weekend for the 1895 cup final against Featherstone Rovers. A Leeds Rhinos academy product, Jones-Bishop opens up on his career so far, from the highs of winning Grand Finals to the lows of having to sit out of the game due to the discovery of blood clots on his lungs. A player with such success across his career and now 32, playing part-time while running a property business but simultaneously trying to lay past Wembley demons aside by lifting a cup under the arch with Championship outfit York to offset two previous defeats in finals there. An interview certainly not to be missed. In addition to Ben's interview, the lads preview both the Challenge Cup and 1895 cup finals respectively. Can Castleford Tigers really lift their first Challenge Cup since 1986 by surprising St Helens, and can York upset the odds against hot favourites Featherstone Rovers in the pinnacle of cup competitions for the lower tiers? Elsewhere, there's a round-up of some Super League and Championship games in recent times, including Wigan's first win in six over Huddersfield, and Salford's thrashing of a youthful Cas side away from home. With the second tier not having any action this weekend due to the 1895 cup final, Super League does take centre stage in the previews for games coming up in the near future, Catalans Dragons looking to do a double over Leeds and extend their lead at the top of the table in the process. All this and more in the Rugby League Review.

Davies was on the scoresheet again earlier this week as the Dragons eased past Huddersfield Giants, making it 10 wins in 11 games. There's also round up of the last week across the Super League and Betfred Championship, with games being postponed, cancelled and re-arranged seemingly everyday at the moment. Warrington made it six wins in a row with a thumping victory over Wigan, Leigh lost out again and are now winless in 13 Super League games while Featherstone Rovers' dominance in the Championship continued. Transfers are being made across the world of rugby league ahead of the next campaign, Warrington and Castleford Tigers the front runners in that field at the moment. The word ‘legend' is bandied about a lot – but it's really the only one you can use to describe Andrea Dobson. She was just sixteen years old when she made her debut for the Great Britain rugby league team. Little did anyone know at that point that Andrea would become a stalwart of the game, playing in four World Cups and captaining England at the 2017 tournament in Australia. And by the time she stepped away from the international scene, she had more England caps than anyone who had come before her. Andrea still plays in the Women's Super League for Featherstone Rovers, and has just taken up a new job as the Rugby League Development Officer for the city of Sheffield. And honestly, this is a brilliant chat with an all-round legend of the game. We talk about getting your start in the game at such a young age; balancing an international career with the trials of everyday life; some of the ignorance that was attached to being a gay woman in the sport by those on the outside of it; retirement and her plans for when that moment comes; her new role; and so, so much more. This is a cracking episode we really think you're going to like. All Blacks second five-eighth Sonny Bill Williams has reportedly been offered a staggering $9.7m deal to return to rugby league after the Rugby World Cup.The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that the 34-year-old, who came off the bench in Saturday's World Cup semifinal defeat to England, has been offered the two-year deal to play for the Toronto Wolfpack in Europe's Super League. The Canadian franchise is funded by Australian mining billionaire David Argyle and will make its debut in the Super League next year after winning promotion by beating Featherstone Rovers in the second division final.According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Williams has also received multi-year, multi-million dollar offers from overseas rugby clubs. His contract with New Zealand Rugby comes to an end at the conclusion of the Rugby World Cup. The All Blacks play Wales in the bronze final on Friday night which is expected to be Williams' final test for New Zealand. The two-time World Cup winner fronted an All Blacks press conference yesterday in Japan and when asked to reveal his sporting future Williams said: "Soon bro, soon, we're just trying to finalise that."Williams also appeared to brush off recent reports that suggested he would be joining the Sydney Roosters in a coaching capacity next year.Sonny Bill Williams talking at an All Blacks press conference yesterday. Photo / Mark MitchellWolfpack head coach Brian McDermott previously said Toronto wanted to bring in a "David Beckham-type player" and that Williams fit the bill."Our club would want to have a name that's absolutely international that everybody would recognise and help the profile of our game, very much like David Beckham did for Major League Soccer," McDermott added."But he would have to be a very good player as well, he's got to be able to do the job that I want him to do. There would be no token player or just a headline-grabbing player."While he wasn't prepared to talk about his future in yesterday's press conference, Williams offered some insight into the next All Blacks coach with Steve Hansen stepping down after the World Cup.Williams was asked about Ian Foster's credentials and rather than endorse the All Blacks attack coach he instead opted to make a strong push for the inclusion of a Māori or Pacific Island coach within the All Blacks set-up.Blues assistant Tana Umaga and successful Japan coach Jamie Joseph are two such figures, while Blues head coach Leon MacDonald has played for the New Zealand Māori, and Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger has Tahitian and Samoan heritage.Dave Rennie, a man who Williams shares close ties with after they won two Super Rugby titles at the Chiefs, has Cook Islands heritage but he is thought to be close to signing on to replace Michael Cheika at the Wallabies."When it comes to that there are going to be a few guys putting their heads up isn't there? By a few reports I may have to put my hand up too because I'm stepping into coaching," Williams said with a smile."Good luck to everyone who puts their hand up and tries to step into that role. There are a lot of coaches who will be leaving at the end of this year."One thing I would probably put to NZR is it would be good to see a Pacific Islander or Māori in the coaching system that would have a bit of influence because the way the game is going and is today, there's a lot of Māori and Island boys that play for the All Blacks."I'm just thinking how can we get a lot more out of those boys. I know there's a bit of space there for that growth."

So North America is now officially part of the Super League family after the gallant part timers of Featherstone Rovers failed to overturn the full time might of the Toronto Wolfpack. Brian McDermott asks everyone to embrace his team but we wonder who the chairmen of the other clubs were cheering for during the game? Now is the time for player transfer speculation and who better to start with than the Kiwi King Sonny Bill Williams. And as Salford prepare for the short walk over to Old Trafford what do they need to do to avoid the losers long walk courtesy of St Helens in the most unexpected combination of teams for the seasons finale. Featherstone Rovers are but 80 minutes from a season in Super League, and once the travel fatigue of the game in France wears off they can look forward to a schlep to Canada to settle their new season’s plans. As Toronto prepare their strategy for the Featherstone visit, should the Super League be now demanding the Wolfpack’s fulfilment of criteria for SL status or, is it up to Robert Elstone’s men to be even asking such questions? And, are former NRL players good value for money or simply over priced journeymen? Matt Shaw is joined for the big debate by Rugby League entrepreneur Ricky Wilby, Huddersfield Giants MD Richard Thewlis and Wolfpack advisor Martin Vickers to discuss all this and more on Rugby League Back Chat

The future of reserve grade Rugby League could be given a rather large boost as clubs plan to amalgamate players into a meaningful gaming structure which can only be good news for players and spectators alike, can’t it? Should clubs be docked points for crowd trouble?Featherstone Rovers have an opinion on this as expressed by the club’s Chairman. And for a game renowned for its speed, why are those players intent on slowing it down not punished from the off, or could that be construed in itself as negative officiating? In discussion with host Matt Shaw are League Express editor Martyn Sadler, Featherstone Rovers Chairman Mark Campbell and the RFL’s Interim Chief On-Field Officer, David Rotheram.

Should clubs be held financially liable for the actions of so called fans as in the case of Featherstone Rovers and their £10k fine. Womans Rugby League sets sights on the World Cup but can we expect full time players any time soon? I went to school with Graham (or Wiggy as we called him). He was two years younger than me but we usually played in the same rugby team. We both played county rugby and both got trials for Leicester Tigers youth team. One of us got in and the other is me. 12 years on from those trials I played a game of Rugby League for Yorkshire Water against Yorkshire Electricity. My opposite number was the Featherstone Rovers first team centre. I got marmalised. I split my lip in a friendly "cuffing" incident, damaged my hand in a retaliatory incident, and took a kick to the knee. I hobbled home and turned the TV on only to see Wiggy playing for England and shaking hands with my hero Nelson Mandela. We didn't play in the same team anymore. I sat and wondered at how far he'd come. I shouldn't have wondered. He was dedicated to this. There was no way he wasn't going to succeed in Rugby. He spanned the professional and amateur eras, he played for Tigers 398 times, played for England 54 times and played for the British and Irish Lions 3 times. He was forwards coach for Tigers, England, the British and Irish Lions and now Georgia. Fierce on the pitch, funny in the changing room, and one of the most humble people I know. I'm proud to have played with him, and to call him my mate. This is a long one, well it would be - it's two old school mates having a chat 32 years after they last played together.
