The UK's Building Safety Act requires high-risk buildings to maintain comprehensive fire safety cases - living documents that identify hazards, mitigate risks, and establish clear accountability for building safety. This is the subject of my discussion with Chris Mayfield and Martyn Ramsden from OFR.• Safety cases differ from fire strategies by being owned by the building's accountable person rather than consultants• The Principal Accountable Person must take responsibility for preventing fire spread and structural failure• Safety cases must document hazards, protective measures, and management systems• The approach draws from lessons in high-hazard industries following disasters like Piper Alpha• Safety cases should follow a logical structure: building description, safety management, hazard identification, safety measures, emergency procedures, and conclusions• Bow tie diagrams help visualise threats, consequences, and barriers in a way all stakeholders can understand• For new buildings, safety cases integrate with the "gateway" approval system• Existing high-risk buildings (over 18m/7 stories with 2+ dwellings) must have safety cases ready for inspection• When properly implemented, safety cases create cultural change by helping everyone understand their role in safety----The Fire Science Show is produced by the Fire Science Media in collaboration with OFR Consultants. Today, I'm beyond excited to share a truly rare and special opportunity: a conversation with UK climbing legend Paul Ramsden. The Piolets d'Or—often called the Oscars of mountaineering—is the highest honor in alpine climbing, awarded to only those who demonstrate the pinnacle of style and commitment in the mountains. With past recipients like David Lama, Mick Fowler, and Hayden Kennedy, the award emphasizes ascents done in ‘alpine style'—no bolts, no portaledges, no siege tactics. Just you, your partner, and what you can carry on your back as you tackle an unclimbed wall on an unclimbed mountain. And Paul Ramsden? He holds five Piolets d'Or—the most of any climber in history. For Paul, style isn't just about the ethics—it's the heart of his climbing philosophy. His unwavering commitment to ‘alpine style' is how he authentically experiences the mountains. It's a pure test of his ability to move efficiently, confidently, and quickly over technical terrain in extreme high-altitude environments. What makes Paul even more unique is his aversion to the spotlight. Despite his unparalleled achievements, he has stayed largely out of the public eye. Beyond the write-ups he and his partners have contributed to the American Alpine Journal, there's almost no available information about him. In fact, this might very well be the first time Paul has spoken openly about his life, his climbs, and his distinct approach to the climbing world. It's truly an honor to have the chance to share his story. This conversation is split into two parts. In Part I, we'll get to know Paul—where he came from, what shaped him, and how he became the climber he is today. Then in Part II, we'll dive into the specifics of each of the five individual climbs that earned him the Piolets d'Or. So, get ready for 2 and a half hours of stories, lessons, insights, and life lessons with the legendary Paul Ramsden.----Don't forget to check out our full video episodes on Youtube! The TCM movement is growing but we need your help to spread the word! This podcast episode of "Hustle and Flowchart" features a fascinating interview with Sam Ramsden, creator of the hit podcast "Silly Stories for Kids" and owner of an electrical business. Sam shares his journey from an electrical business owner to a successful podcaster. We also explore how he balances work, family, and creativity seamlessly, along with insights about his stories, inspirations, and the importance of positivity. What This Episode is About: Sam Ramsden joins us to discuss his unexpected podcasting success, how he infuses creativity into different aspects of his life, and the importance of understanding and nurturing unique family dynamics. His podcast, "Silly Stories for Kids," has taken off in unexpected ways, reaching almost 1.5 million downloads. Sam balances his electrical business, Ramp Electrical, with creative storytelling for children. He delves into his past experiences and influences, revealing how his father and father-in-law significantly impacted his trajectory. Unplanned Success Through Creativity Sam Ramsden, originally running an electrical business, never predicted the massive success of his podcast, "Silly Stories for Kids." This podcast started as a fun project for his children, encouraged by his father-in-law. It quickly gained traction, achieving nearly 1.5 million downloads within a year. Sam shares how he uses "Suno," a music AI, to create personalized songs for people at work and social gatherings, enhancing his storytelling endeavors. One interesting quote from Sam: "What started as bedtime stories has become a global phenomenon, all thanks to family encouragement and a bit of fun."  Suno Music AI: Suno The Role of Family and Personal Influences Sam's family plays a crucial role in his podcasting journey. His father-in-law suggested starting the podcast, which turned out to be a brilliant idea. Sam's passion for storytelling and creativity stems from his childhood, influenced deeply by his father. He emphasizes how positive influence and support from family members can profoundly shape one's work and creativity. Key takeaway: Supportive relationships and following one's passion can lead to unexpected success and personal fulfillment. Balancing Work, Life, and Creativity Managing an electrical business and running a successful podcast isn't easy, but Sam Ramsden does it with remarkable balance. Despite his busy schedule as a father of four, he finds joy in spontaneous creativity, often attributing it partly to ADHD, which he considers a superpower in storytelling. He shares that having a supportive wife helps him stay on track and manage his time effectively. Sam's wise words: "Balancing family, business, and creative endeavors is really about knowing what's important and giving time to those things." Handling Business Challenges Running Ramp Electrical presented many unforeseen challenges, especially during the COVID pandemic, which resulted in lost contracts and personal losses, including the passing of Sam's mother. These experiences have taught him valuable lessons about resilience and prioritization. Sam believes in learning from mistakes and emphasizes the importance of systems and processes, though he admits to needing help in consistently following them. Quote for inspiration: "Think of mistakes as lessons that guide you towards bigger success. Sometimes what not to do is just as important." Mental Health and Personal Growth Sam emphasizes the importance of mental health and seeing a psychologist to realign thoughts and provide self-grace when things don't go as planned. He compares mental health check-ups to regular servicing of a vehicle. This approach not only helped Sam maintain balance but also enabled him to bring more joy and positivity into his life and work. Key lesson: Taking care of your mental health is crucial for maintaining balance and gaining perspective, much like maintaining a vehicle to ensure it runs smoothly. Understanding and Communication Understanding one's thought processes can greatly enhance communication and empathy. Sam encourages asking others to describe their thinking processes to understand them better and reduce misunderstandings. He highlights that everyone thinks differently, and understanding this can help in fostering better personal and professional relationships. Example shared: Sam's nephew thinks in pictures, which was a revelation for Sam and helped him connect better with his nephew.  "Untethered Soul" by Michael Singer: Untethered Soul Resources from Episode Listen to Silly Stories for Kids Try Suno for yourself and send us the fun songs you create Check out the Yoto Players for your kids Conclusion Sam Ramsden's journey from an electrical business owner to a successful children's podcaster is inspiring and filled with valuable lessons. Emphasizing the importance of family, mental health, and understanding individual thinking processes, Sam's story teaches us that success often comes from following passions and staying true to personal values. Whether balancing work and life or handling business challenges, Sam's experiences offer a wealth of insights. We meet Mary Ramsden to discuss her new solo exhibition Desire Line, opening this week at Pilar Corrias, London.Captivated by the sheer range of ideas and images that a passage of paint can convey, from a tuft of grass to a soaring patch of sky, Ramsden revels in the boundless versatility of her medium. The artist brings a range of references to this new body of work, including English landscape painting, the subtle palette and chromatic intelligence of Les Nabis painters Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard, and a keen engagement with poetry and literature. Ramsden's title, Desire Line, refers to a phenomenon whereby a path emerges through spontaneous and habitual use, whether in a park, pasture or wilderness.Based in North Yorkshire, many of Ramsden's recent paintings reflect the textures of the local landscape as well as the qualities of northern light. The artist considers paint earthy, modest and infinitely adaptable, with the capacity to conjure atmospheres, images and metaphors, all within a single set of brushstrokes. Dark oxygen (all works 2024) evokes a moonlit landscape, with patches of cool lilacs and silvery blues and greens. Touches of rust and warm colours mark the edges, while the whole painting seems to be embraced by a quivering penumbra. If Dark oxygen has a wintry chill, a sense of abundant, generative life characterises the surface of My desire is not a thinking. In a haze of peachy orange, as if bathed in the light of a sunrise, sections of paint emerge on the canvas like patches of lichen or moss, sedately moving with their own inner force or rhythm. Both paintings express a distilled and unearthly beauty, reminiscent of a mythical landscape conjured by Gustave Moreau, though fractured and emptied of narrative. At the same time, these are meditations on paint itself; each canvas a multivalent space for Ramsden to revel in the ambiguity and potential of her surfaces.Fascinated by how Bertolt Brecht would have his characters change costumes to foreground the drama's illusory nature, Ramsden likewise conceives of different passages of paint as characters that might, with a simple shift of emphasis or the viewer's perspective, become something new. The same section of a painting might evoke a stony field or a pool of dappled light, a cracked patch of ice or a window at night. Another touchstone for the artist is Robert Motherwell, who, like Ramsden, adapted many of his titles from poetry, and considered abstraction a kind of universal language capable of communicating both powerful emotions and complex thoughts. The exhibition will be accompanied by a booklet with an essay by novelist and essayist Daisy Hildyard and a poem by Danielle Wilde.Desire Line runs until 11th January 2025 and is now open at Pilar Corrias, on Savile Row, London. What do you want to do? This is not just about finding a hobby. He emphasizes the importance of easing up on the demands we're putting on ourselves about what comes next. Our first step is getting our handle on our head and our heart. From there he offers: · Decide who you want to be now that the kids are gone. ·  Have a vision for the future. ·  Do some of those ‘retirement' things NOW, don't wait! We're not in a crisis, we're in an identity EVOLUTION. If you think you're in a “Challenging time”, remove the lle in the middle of CHALLENGE and what you have is CHANGE. This episode is my response to Layne's video about seed oils. Due to the pervasive mainstream support for seed oils, I believe it's extremely important to shed some light on the hidden truth behind these oils. There is a lot of conflicting evidence on seed oils out there. Looking at the totality of the evidence can be very misleading, so we must look at the details. By thoroughly breaking down each trial from Layne's video, we can see massive flaws in the methods and designs of each study. Trans fat consumption by the control group and multifactorial interventions in the experimental group were the primary confounding variables. In this video, Paul references several studies suggesting different ways in which seed oils are harmful to humans. He always appreciate differing views and these discussions because it's how we all learn. He has hope that a respectful debate will happen in the future so that we can dive deeper into this important subject. He strongly believe that seed oils are evolutionarily inconsistent, these are not the fats that humans have evolved on. In fact, we have evolved by consuming ample amounts of animal fats, rich in saturated fats. Saturated fats have been shown to lower markers of heart disease and they are an amazing source of essential vitamins like A, D3, K2, E. It's always meat / organs / fruit / honey / raw dairy. This is an ANIMAL-BASED diet, and I believe this is the most optimal diet for humans on the planet. However, it really only gained attention after a more recent re-analysis by Ramsden et al., which in recent years has been used as supporting evidence for the idea that increased polyunsaturated fat (PUFA), and specifically linoleic acid, in addition to reduced saturated fat intake, can increase heart disease risk. This was based on the findings that substituting linoleic acid in place of saturated fat increased all-cause, CVD and CHD mortality. This is of course counter to prevailing consensus and guidelines in this area, which routinely show reduced risk on replacing SFA with PUFA. Could this trial undermine the common conclusions that replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat decreases heart disease risk? In this episode Alan and Danny discuss some of the crucial aspects to understand about this study and what it means for what conclusions can be made about the impact of PUFA broadly, and linoleic acid specifically, on our health.

"There have been seasons and periods of my NCAA journey where it hasn't felt fun. To me then it's like, Why are you doing it? Otherwise, it's just painful… The fun part is warming up with my teammates and chatting on the cool down about whatever drama happened with their friends that day. This year at camp when we sat down as a women's team to think through what we want out of this season, that was a big part of our conversation. We want to be successful, absolutely. That's a top priority here. But how we go about doing that is up to us." 2023 NCAA 1500m champion Maia Ramsden, a junior at Harvard, just signed a NIL deal with On. In this episode, you'll get to hear a bit more of her story as she's lived in so many awesome places including New York. New Zealand (which she represents internationally), Fiji, the Solomon Islands, Ethiopia and now Cambridge. She had an amazing season that included a personal best of 4:08 to win the NCAA title in Austin. She's also having a really great cross country season that included a sixth-place finish at the Nuttycomb Invitational in Wisconsin, which is considered one of the deepest races of the year. She'll be one to watch at the upcoming Ivy League Championships, NCAA Regional Championships and the NCAA Championships in Charlottesville next month. This was a super fun episode and I'm sure you'll be rooting for Maia and the Harvard ladies in the coming weeks.
