BREAK: RINGLING BROS_FINAL STORY 1: Cobb Court Clerk Plans to Return $84K in Passport Shipping Fees Cobb Superior Court Clerk Connie Taylor plans to refund nearly $84,000 in improperly collected passport shipping fees, a controversy stemming from her pocketing expedited shipping charges, which is not allowed under state law. This refund, pending board approval, follows years of scrutiny over Taylor’s collection of over $425,000 in passport fees as personal income. The issue also sparked a Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe and legislative efforts to increase transparency. Taylor’s office has faced additional criticism for severe dysfunction, including a botched software change in 2024 that disrupted court operations. Despite these challenges, Taylor was reelected in 2024. STORY 2: Historic McAfee House Sold for $1, will be Relocated The historic Robert McAfee house, built in the 1840s, will be relocated to Ball Ground, Georgia, after being sold for $1 by Cobb Landmarks to Lee and Brittani Lusk, experienced renovators of historic homes. The Lusks plan to restore the home as a private residence, adhering to historic preservation standards. The move, costing an estimated $75,000-$100,000, with renovations around $200,000, must be completed by May 15. Originally located in Cobb County, the house has significant historical value, including its use as a Civil War headquarters. A preservation easement will protect its historic integrity. The current $750 million SPLOST cycle ends in December 2027. Commissioners aim to finalize project lists by April 2026, focusing on road improvements, stormwater infrastructure, sidewalks, and community projects. Rising costs from inflation may push unfinished 2022 SPLOST projects into the new package. Public feedback sessions are planned for early 2026. Mableton, transitioning to cityhood, observes closely as its services depend on the mediation's outcome. STORY 2: Cobb Scholl Board to Set Milage Rate The Cobb County Board of Education is set to decide on maintaining a flat millage rate of 18.7 mills for 2024, despite rising property values expected to bring in an additional $54.96 million in tax revenue, a 7.32% increase from last year. While this won't increase taxes, homeowners could see an average increase of $255.17 in property taxes for a $450,000 home. Debate among board members includes potential implications of rolling back the millage rate to mitigate tax hikes, amid community concerns over tax burdens and budget allocations already in place. Public input will influence the final decision at tonight's meeting. STORY 3: Cobb Denies Austell Man Selling Antiques from Home This week, the Cobb Board of Commissioners rejected Edwin Stafford's request to operate an antique store and yard sale from his home on Austell Powder Springs Road. Stafford sought a 24-month permit to sell antiques on weekends after complaints from neighbors and businesses about his previous unauthorized sales. Despite Stafford's plea that this business was his livelihood, Commissioner Monique Sheffield cited ongoing violations of county codes and noted that Stafford's activities didn't fit the area's development plans, which aim to attract more structured businesses. The board unanimously denied Stafford's application, leaving him to consider alternatives for sustaining his business. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Proposed East Cobb Whataburger Deferred The Cobb Board of Commissioners voted 4-0 to extend Whataburger's request for a site plan change for a new restaurant at the former O'Charley's location in east Cobb. The fast-food chain, aiming to establish its fifth Cobb County location, faced delays due to incomplete architectural landscaping plans. Issues arose regarding compliance with Cobb County Tree Ordinance parking lot tree standards, requiring adjustments such as additional parking lot peninsulas. The proposed site plan conflicts with prior land-use restrictions prohibiting fast-food restaurants and drive-thru services, stipulated in a settlement with Sembler Retail and Sembler Family Partnership in 1999. The matter will be reconsidered at the next zoning hearing on August 20. STORY 5: OUT AND ABOUT: 5 Things to do This Weekend in Cobb County—July 19-21 The Southern-Fried Gaming Expo, Atlanta's 11th annual gaming convention, takes place at the Cobb Galleria Centre and Renaissance Waverly Hotel & Convention Center this weekend. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for June 13th Publish Date: June 13th Commercial: From the Ingles Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Thursday, June 13th and Happy 70th Birthday to actor Tim Allen. ***06.13.24 – BIRTHDAY – TIM ALLEN*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Marietta Names Beam New Police Chief Marietta School Board Hears Last Pitch to Stop Student Phone Use 3 Alcohol Ordinance Changes on Marietta's Radar Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on whether honey is an added sugar. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Marietta Names Beam New Police Chief Interim Police Chief David Beam was officially named as the new chief of the Marietta Police Department by a 4-0 vote. Beam, a 38-year veteran of the department, had been serving in various leadership roles, including interim chief from 2006 to 2007. His priorities have included recruitment and retention of officers, successfully reducing vacancies from 29 to 4 since taking over. With extensive experience and qualifications, Beam expressed gratitude for the appointment and aims to uphold the department's legacy of service to the Marietta community. City Manager Bill Bruton expressed confidence in Beam's abilities, citing his long-standing dedication and proven results within the department. STORY 2: Marietta School Board Hears Last Pitch to Stop Student Phone Use The Marietta Board of Education is considering a plan to limit middle school students' access to cellphones and smartwatches using pouches locked by magnets throughout the school day. Superintendent Grant Rivera presented the final proposal, emphasizing a comprehensive approach involving community engagement and IT strategies. Stakeholder feedback has largely been positive, with students even offering insights. The district plans to partner with various institutions for research opportunities to measure the policy's effectiveness. The proposed $100,000 purchase of pouches and magnets will be voted on next Tuesday, with additional costs for securing magnets in classrooms. Community input will be sought before the final decision. STORY 3: 3 Alcohol Ordinance Changes on Marietta's Radar The Marietta City Council is set to discuss three proposed changes to its alcohol ordinances, including allowing specialty wine shops to sell wine by the glass, permitting businesses to offer carry-out, curb service, and delivery of unopened alcoholic drinks, and allowing downtown merchants to sell liquor in the public right-of-way during city-sanctioned events. The changes aim to loosen restrictions on alcohol sales on the Marietta Square. The proposed revisions would expand the scope of the Ancillary Wine Tasting License to allow for consumption on premises, costing $541, and enable businesses to sell alcohol for carry-out and delivery. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back. Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Cobb Calls Referndum on 30 year Tax to Fund Transit Cobb County is set to vote on a 30-year 1% sales tax for public transportation on November 5th. The referendum, approved along party lines by the Board of Commissioners, aims to raise $11 billion for transit improvements. Supporters argue it's necessary for growth and congestion relief, while opponents question its cost and effectiveness. The tax would fund an overhaul of Cobb's transit system, including rapid bus routes and on-demand "microtransit" services. Community outreach is underway ahead of the referendum, with voters asked to decide on the tax's imposition and associated debt issuance. STORY 5: Out And About: 5 Things to do This Weekend in Cobb County—June 14- 16 The Cobb County NAACP is hosting its 21st annual Juneteenth Celebration on Marietta Square from Friday through Sunday. The event features family-friendly activities, entertainment, and food, with free admission. Additionally, Marietta History Center hosts a monthly pop-in event with this Saturday's theme being "Cultures of Cobb." Frog Rock Brewery in Austell will host a benefit concert on Saturday, with ticket sales supporting Sweetwater Creek State Park. For Dolly Parton fans, there's "Dolly Days of Summer" at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre in Marietta, featuring trivia, music bingo, and a costume contest. Smyrna's North Cooper Lake Park will screen "Back to the Future" on Saturday for a Father's Day showing. Registration is required, and tickets cost $10 per family. Don't listen to this one with kids in the car, folks. Did these three just become best friends? Yes, they did. Kaitlyn and Out & About's Pat McAuliffe and Joey Camasta hit it off in KB's Nashville studio right off the bat, starting by discussing the extreme lengths they would go to stay youthful. The hangover definitely isn't stopping Pat & Joey as they get into everything with KB from the origins of their nicknames Nana and Trish, how they ended up getting stuck together on their pod, and their most mortifying hookup experiences ever. And, we're absolutely not yucking anyone's yum as we hear about what goes down in the gay hookup scene… AKA things that make Kaitlyn feel extremely vanilla. They also have a full conversation with a bot about The Bachelor, make plans for a petal tavern and for KB to join their live show (both of which came to fruition), and end with a very important news announcement and toast. He/she/they, alle Pronomen erlaubt!
For the first time, we leave the confines of Jeremy’s flat and go OUT AND ABOUT!Yes, this week’s sodcast is an Outside Broadcast as we travel back to London from a gig with Robin Ince in Berkhamsted and presumably irritate the living shit out of the rest of the passengers. It was actually only intended to be a mini-sodcast but, luckily, the train stopped just outside Euston and we all ended up missing our connections so as a result it’s one of our longest ever! So, if you love the idea of being stuck on a train with three noisy and increasingly incoherent bastards, then you, my friend, are in luck!
