We rarely cover movies here at Switched On Pop. But after seeing Ryan Coogler's new vampire musical Sinners, we knew we had to make an exception. The movie is an ode to Black music. Throughout its over two hour runtime, the film pays tribute to the blues: nodding to the musicians, instruments, and melodies that make it a foundational genre in the American musical canon. There's also Irish folk vampires, original music from Ludwig Göransson, and a whole lot of history – perfect for Charlie and Nate to sink their teeth into. NOTA EDC. 4,5 estrellas

Send us a textA stunning achievement in genre filmmaking, "Sinners" transports us to the Mississippi Delta of 1932 where twin brothers find themselves caught between supernatural evil and the harsh realities of Jim Crow America. Ryan Coogler's masterful direction elevates what could have been a standard vampire tale into something truly extraordinary – a rich, textured exploration of brotherhood, community, and survival against impossible odds.Michael B. Jordan delivers what might be his career-best performance, portraying twins Smoke and Stack with such distinct personalities that you'll forget you're watching one actor in dual roles. The brothers return to their hometown with dreams of uplifting their community through music and business, only to face threats both supernatural and all-too-human. When Irish vampire Jack O'Connell arrives with his coven, promising eternal life but demanding blood sacrifice, the brothers must decide what they're willing to sacrifice to protect their people.Shot on breathtaking 70mm IMAX by cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw (the first woman to use this camera format), every frame feels like a painting that deserves to be studied. The film embraces darkness in ways few mainstream movies dare, creating a visual language that enhances both the horror elements and the historical setting. Ludwig Göransson's blues-infused score weaves throughout, becoming as essential to the storytelling as the dialogue itself. What makes "Sinners" truly special is how it refuses to be contained by genre expectations. Coogler seamlessly blends horror, drama, action, and even musical elements without ever losing focus on the emotional core of his story. The supporting cast shines throughout – Haley Steinfeld brings fire and strength, newcomer Miles Catton impresses in his debut, and Delroy Lindo delivers gravitas as Delta Slim. Yuami Masuku's portrayal of a hoodoo practitioner adds another layer to this richly textured world.Don't miss this landmark film that critics are calling the most original and exciting theatrical experience of the year. See it in IMAX if possible – your eyes, ears, and heart will thank you.Support the show

Horror Movie Talk

This week we review Ryan Coogler's Sinners. Is this movie cursed, or is Horror Movie Talk cursed? Stay tuned to find out. Synopsis Sinners stars Michael B Jordan and Michael C Jordan as twin brothers Smoke and Stack returning from Chicago with ill gotten gains to their hometown in rural prohibition era Mississippi. They immediately work on establishing their own juke joint to entertain and profit off the locals. They go around town recruiting old friends and relatives to help and successfully have a grand opening. When the music pierces the time and space as it is prone to do, it captures the attention of nearby evil… things. Wacky hijinx ensue. Review of Sinners Ryan Coogler writes and directs his first horror film coming off of his success with blockbusters like Black Panther and Creed. Here he obviously draws inspiration from Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn, where it feels like one genre and then suddenly shifts into a horror film. However, we are given fair warning from the opening scene that shit is about to go down. There is a lot going on in this film. It explores a lot of ideas about good and evil, guilt, exploitation, racism, the transcendence of music, and pro tips on how to eat pussy. Not all of these themes are fully explored or necessarily land, but I have to respect the ambition and swing for the fences attitude of Coogler with this film. The film does have a great cast, with fully fleshed out characters and relationships. It spend a lot of time with the setup so that when the killing starts to happen there are real stakes (no pun intended). It feels like a Stephen King novel in the best way. A large element of the film is the music, with several musical sequences featuring blues, folk music, and weird afro-blues-rock-hiphop-pop fusion. The musical director on the film is swedish composer Ludwig Göransson, which is probably the most promising new film composer in recent years having scored The Mandelorian, Oppenheimer, Black Panther, and more. In my opinion, he is out of place here, and a lot of the musical score seems out of place and distracting. For a film about delta blues and juke joints, they seem almost embarrassed to include a lot of it. Overall, the film was very good. It held my attention, features a setting and characters that are interesting, and delivers some great monster moments. Score 9/10

Ryan Coogler's new film, Sinners, is now out in theaters, and with this film getting incredible critic and audience scores, we just had to check it out for ourselves to see if it's REALLY as good as everyone is saying it is. With that being said, we went full SPOILERS with this review, so if you haven't seen the film yet, you have been warned!Ryan Coogler's Sinners is a genre-defying Southern gothic horror set in 1932 Mississippi. Michael B. Jordan stars in dual roles as twin brothers Smoke and Stack, WWI veterans who return home to open a juke joint with their musically gifted cousin Sammie (Miles Caton). Their dream of creating a safe haven for Black culture is shattered when a sinister force—led by an Irish vampire named Remmick (Jack O'Connell)—descends upon their community, turning the opening night into a battle for survival.Blending supernatural horror with themes of racial injustice, cultural appropriation, and artistic legacy, Sinners is Coogler's most personal and ambitious film to date. Shot in large-format IMAX and featuring a haunting score by Ludwig Göransson, the film has earned critical acclaim for its bold storytelling and powerful performances.Follow us on all our socials! linktr.ee/overunderpodSupport the podcast on Patreon! patreon.com/overunderpodJoin our Discord server! discord.gg/Zqev7jEnXzBusiness Inquiries: overunderpodcastshow@gmail.comGrow your YouTube channel w/ VidIQ!vidiq.com/r?code=9cFKKLPodcast Hosts: Dylan DeAngelis and Jason GongIntro/Outro Music: Leva - The Vortex (Instrumental Version)Socials ---> https://linktr.ee/overunderpod

Director Ryan Coogler is back to deliver us more goods on the big screen with his latest original film, of course with Michael B. Jordan, Sinners. The trailers for this film have been absolutely fascinating and the hints over the years of Coogler's next project being an original and a horror film were extremely exciting to me. That's because I don't think he's made a single movie below the 'great' level. I enjoy his two Black Panther films immensely and about equally. The two more impressive outings in his career so far though have been his debut feature Fruitvale Station, a heartbreaking true story, and one of the greatest sports films of all-time: Creed, a legacy sequel that managed to top anything that had come before... and the original Rocky won Best Picture! Coogler is one of the best working directors, as I've clearly established, and him managing to make a high-budget, genre-blender and still managing to maintain the rights is just such a boss move, while the very easy next step for him would have been to continue immediately with what would've been a surefire hit in Black Panther III. Anyhow, is this movie as good as the rave reviews so far have indicated? Find out in this NON-SPOILER review!Sinners:Written and Directed by: Ryan CooglerProduced by: Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, Sev OhanianExecutive Producers: Pete Chiappetta, Rebecca Cho, Will Greenfield, Ludwig Göransson, Andrew Lary, Anthony TittanegroCo-Producers: Tina Anderson, Kenneth YuAssociate Producer: Ammar MohamedMusic by: Ludwig GöranssonDirector of Photography: Autumn Durand Arkapaw Edited by: Michael P. Marvel's 2018 film Black Panther not only broke box office records, it also changed perceptions of Black superheroes and African culture. As the first film to feature a Black superhero, the film's director and writers wasted zero time taking up space in an industry that traditionally lacks BIPOC representation. Joining the team was Ruth E. Carter, whose skill in blending African-American history and contemporary culture through fashion, combined with her determination to showcase Black excellence, won an Academy Award in 2019.rnrnrnNow through April 6th, Clevelanders will have the opportunity to be up close to the outfits created by Carter, in conjunction with the Cleveland Orchestra's performance of Ludwig G?ransson's Oscar-winning score from Black Panther on March 28-29. It is a rare opportunity to see what it looks like when communities can tell their own stories through their creativity, and shift narratives for lasting change.

The first film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU), it was directed by Ruben Fleischer from a screenplay by the writing team of Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, along with Kelly Marcel. Tom Hardy stars as Eddie Brock and Venom alongside Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, and Reid Scott. In the film, struggling journalist Eddie gains superpowers after becoming the host of an alien symbiote, Venom, whose species plans to invade Earth. Following Venom's appearance in Spider-Man 3 (2007), Sony Pictures attempted to develop a spin-off film based on the Venom character, which was stalled due to issues with the company's ongoing Spider-Man franchise. In March 2016, work began on a new version that would start a new shared universe featuring the non-Spider-Man Marvel characters that the studio possessed film rights to. Sony also originally intended for the Venom film to share the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), but ultimately distanced the film from Spider-Man. Sony's Columbia Pictures produced the film in association with Marvel Entertainment.[5] In March 2017, Rosenberg and Pinkner were set to write, with Fleischer and Hardy added in May; Marcel subsequently joined to rewrite the script. Filming took place from October 2017 to January 2018 in Atlanta, New York City, and San Francisco. The film was primarily inspired by the comic book miniseries Venom: Lethal Protector (1993) and the story arc "Planet of the Symbiotes" (1995). Ludwig Göransson was hired to compose the film's score, marking his second Marvel film after Black Panther (2018). Venom premiered at the Regency Village Theater on October 1, 2018, and was theatrically released in the United States on October 5. Despite receiving generally negative reviews from critics, Hardy's performance and the character's relationship with Venom were praised, and the film became the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2018, earning over $856 million worldwide and setting several box office records for an October release. It is followed by two sequels: Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which was released on October 1, 2021, and Venom: The Last Dance, which is scheduled for release on October 25, 2024. Venom: Let There Be Carnage is a 2021 American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Venom. The sequel to Venom (2018) and the second film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU), it was directed by Andy Serkis from a screenplay by Kelly Marcel. Tom Hardy stars as Eddie Brock and Venom alongside Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, Reid Scott, Stephen Graham, and Woody Harrelson. In the film, Eddie and the alien symbiote Venom must face serial killer Cletus Kasady (Harrelson) after he becomes the host of an offshoot of Venom named Carnage. Venom was intended by Sony Pictures to be the start of a new shared universe, and plans for a sequel began during production on the first film. Harrelson was cast to make a brief appearance as Cletus at the end of Venom, with the intention of him becoming the villain Carnage in the sequel. Official work on the sequel began in January 2019, with Hardy and Harrelson confirmed to return along with Marcel as writer. Serkis was hired as director that August, partly due to his experience working with computer-generated imagery (CGI) and motion capture technology, which was an important part of portraying Venom and Carnage in the film. Filming took place at Leavesden Studios in England from November 2019 to February 2020, with additional filming in San Francisco in February. The title was announced in April 2020. Marco Beltrami was hired to compose the film's score, replacing Ludwig Göransson from the previous film.

Your generous patronage can empower ParaPower Mapping for years to come: patreon.com/ParaPowerMapping Using SK Bain's "The Most Dangerous Book in the World: 9/11 as Mass Ritual" as a kind of critically paranoid grimoire, we survey the strange numerological, mythological, & occult synchronicities mutual to 9/11 & 3/22, not excluding the fact that two of the infamous Bush Crime Family architects of the first were also Bonesmen, and that the latter coincidentally occurred on the same Yale Secret Society's high holy day. I'm talking about Skull & Bones. We begin to splay out some of the evidence I've been compiling in my sus Christopher Nolan dossier, including the fact that his production designer is Aleister Crowley's nephew (lending credence to this notion that the film "Tenet" could be evoking both 9/11 & 3/22, as the 9/11 mass ritual was rich w/ Crowleyian imagery & some would argue functioned, in part, as an homage or invocation of the Beast 666) and we also illustrate Chris Nolan + Nathan Crowley's working relationship w/ under-fire MIC contractor B o e i n g during "Tenet" filming, who loaned them 4 helicopters & sold them a 747 they crashed into the side of a fabricated Oslo Airport (again evoking 9/11). We dig in deep on how "Tenet" was based on the two dimensional acrostic or magic square known as the Sator Square, and that its historical use as a talisman or charm and its numerological properties (which we proceed to locate in various aspects of the Crocus attack) is further evidence supporting this notion that "Tenet" presaged the Crocus attack & that it may even be a televisual component of some sort of mass brainwashing MegaRitual stretching from 9/11 to 3/22—perhaps intended to reify the earlier psyop false flag & the War on Terror that it birthed through Crowley's Law of Reversal. We talk about how the Sator Square is made up of palindromes and how there are exactly 8228 days b/w 9/11 & 3/22, in other words a numerical palindrome, further underlining this idea that the two attacks could combine into a kind of occult palindrome. We talk the material particulars of the Crocus attack: some of the sus inconsistencies like the feeble security presence on the day, the fact that the developer behind the Crocus shopping center & concert hall is an Azerbaijani billionaire Russian oligarch who has acted as the liaison b/w Putin & Trump in the past, and purported crypto payments for the attackers. We begin to parse some of the differing analysis of the deep event... Including the Russian FSB's assertions that it was Western intel & Ukrainian backed and the conflicting claiming of responsibility by ISIS-K, which a Dutch-owned expat paper in Russia and NATO bureaucrats have been repeating ad nauseam. We illustrate just how curious it is that the US Embassy's warned citizens to avoid "concert halls & shopping centers" approx two weeks prior to the attack, a prescient alert that smacks of plausible deniability. And we muse about how the Nolan film "Tenet" is like a recruitment advert or promotional propaganda for an elite secret society w/in Western intelligence that has self-assigned the task of ensuring that history remains on its deterministic rails, and how its celebration of spy agencies combined w/ quasi-Crowleyian occult trappings gives off a distinctly esoteric fascist vibe... A kind of Blavatsky-esque ideology of Chosen One/ Ascended Master supremacy that results in the forming of this shadow bureaucracy that controls the flow of time & a single man assuming the mantle of arbiter of all things. Using SK Bain's The Most Dangerous Book in the World: 9/11 as Mass Ritual as a kind of critically paranoid grimoire, we dig into the strange numerological, mythological, & occult synchronicities mutual to 9/11 & 3/22, not excluding the fact that two of the infamous Bush Crime Family architects of the first were also Bonesmen, & that the latter coincidentally occurred on the same Yale Secret Society's high holy day. I'm talking about Skull & Bones. We begin to splay out some of the evidence I've been compiling in my sus Chris Nolan dossier, including the fact that his prod designer is Aleister Crowley's nephew (lending credence to this notion that the film "Tenet" could be evoking both 9/11 & 3/22, as the 9/11 mass ritual was rich w/ Crowleyian imagery & some would argue functioned, in part, as an homage or invocation of the Beast 666) and we also illustrate Chris Nolan + Nathan Crowley's working relationship w/ under-fire MIC contractor B o e i n g during Tenet filming, who loaned them 4 helicopters & sold them the 747 they crashed into the side of a fabricated Oslo Airport (evoking the Pentagon on 9/11). We explain how Tenet was based on the two dimensional acrostic or magic square known as the Sator Square, and that its historical use as a talisman or charm and its numerological properties (which we proceed to locate in various aspects of the Crocus attack) are further evidence supporting this notion that Tenet presaged the Crocus attack & that it may even be a televisual component of some sort of mass brainwashing MegaRitual stretching from 9/11 to 3/22—perhaps intended to reify the earlier psyop false flag & re-calcify the War on Terror that it birthed through Crowley's Law of Reversal. We talk about how the Sator Sq is made up of palindromes and how there are exactly 8228 days b/w 9/11 & 3/22, in other words a numerical palindrome, further underlining this idea the 2 attacks could combine into a kind of occult palindrome. We even find time to talk about 3/22 & the Crocus terror attack's proximity to this imminent solar eclipse on April 8th, which will coincide w/ the launching of 3 NASA rockets named after the Egyptian chaos serpent Apep & the booting up of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. We talk about how both of these imminent events are rife w/ Crowleyian symbolism & significance, trotting out AC's ritual for Apep (which talks about child sacrifice & vampirism, grimace), Jack Parson's shadow over the rocket launch, & CERN's well-documented appreciation for esoterica & eschatological shit (see the statue of Shiva outside their complex, etc). We unpack 3/22's material inconsistencies & other sus evidence: the anemic security presence; the fact Crocus City Hall's name evokes a Hermetic etiological myth w/ sacrificial connotations; how the Azerbaijani Russian oligarch developer who constructed the venue has liaised w/ Trump on behalf of Putin in the past; the conflicting false flag rhetoric being put forward by both Russian intel & the Western media outlets who serve as propaganda arms of the hegemon that seeks to Balkanize said country; etc. Sub to the Patreon to view the full notes. Episode 35 - SPOILER Review: Oppenheimer (2023)Two special guests, Papa Hozour and Kathy Garber, join me today to talk about the latest Christopher Nolan epic which seems to be on a clear path to sweep at the upcoming Oscars. After years of success at Warner Bros, his major minor tantrum over the disaster that was the movie “Tenet” and Warner Bros and its irresponsible rollout, Nolan seems to have found his stride at Universal Pictures taking up this “lower budget” ($100 million) feature and within that budget Universal giving him carte blanche on how to deliver that film. I don't hide that I don't exactly see this Director in the best light and yet it is what it is - I absolutely loved the film “Oppenheimer”. Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt (doesn't get talked about enough for this movie) and so many others that make up this amazing cast. No actor (no matter how big or small their scene is) has their screen time wasted in this film. Ludwig Göransson (Composer), Jennifer Lame (Editor), Hoyte Van Hoytema (Cinematographer), Christopher Nolan (Writer/Producer/Director) - the entire team behind the camera also played key roles in catapulting this movie to being a brilliant epic that has endless rewatchability.“Oppenheimer” is available to stream on Peacock and is available to rent and or purchase on all platforms.  This is a public episode. Ludwig Göransson is one of the most accomplished and distinctive film composers of the 21st century. In 2020, after working on the movie Tenet together, acclaimed director Christopher Nolan hired Göransson to score what has become one of the biggest movies of 2023: Oppenheimer. Ludwig, who emigrated to Los Angeles from his native Sweden in 2007, has racked up dozens of writing, producing and scoring credits. He started out working in TV and he eventually started scoring films with his old college friend Ryan Coogler. Ludwig composed music for all of Coogler's hit movies including Fruitvale Station, the Creed series, and both Black Panther films—the first of which won him the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2019. On today's episode Justin Richmond talks to Ludwig Göransson about his incredible body of work as a composer and producer. He explains how his rigorous musical training in Sweden prepared him to write the complex sections of the Oppenheimer score. Ludwig also plays some of the more moving sections of the score for us in effort to show us how he came up with one of the best soundtracks of the year. "Oppenheimer" finally releases in various formats, including IMAX 70mm, at select locations this weekend. The latest film from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Christopher Nolan marks the second time he's collaborated with Academy Award-winning composer Ludwig Göransson ("Black Panther") following their work on "Tenet."
