Former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters has been a longtime supporter of the Palestinian people, as well as a harsh critic of fascism. But now that Gaza is under attack Waters is being criticized as an antisemite — to the extent that his music publisher has severed ties with the aging rocker. Guest host Russell Dobular is joined by Due Dissidence's Keaton Weiss to discuss how misplaced and insincere the criticism of Waters is as the Zionist lobby seeks to silence its prominent detractors. Plus segments on journalist James O'Keefe's latest undercover exposé, President Biden's dustup with Texas Governor Greg Abbott over the border and the announcement that Biden is finally planning to visit the site of the train derailment and chemical explosion in East Palestine, Ohio. Also featuring Kurt Metzger and Stef Zamorano!
Welcome to the episode 21 of "Women In The Music Industry", a podcast that shines a spotlight on the remarkable women who are breaking barriers and making their mark in an industry that has long been dominated by men. Today's episode features my dear sweet friend, International Music Publisher & Songwriting Coach, Suzan Koç! Her career in the music industry started as an intern at Warner Chappell in Paris in 1989 after meeting Nesuhi Ertegun, co-founder of Atlantic Records with his brother, the legendary Ahmet Ertegun. In 7 years she worked her way up to be the Director of International Creative and signed rising Swedish pop group Ace of Base (50 million records sold). In 1996, she moved to New York, where she was VP of Creative for Hit & Run Music (Phil Collins, Genesis) where she met songwriter Shelly Peiken (“What A Girl Wants” (#1), “Bitch (#2)) and landed cuts with Reba McEntire, Brandy, and *NSYNC. She then became the VP of Writer Development at BMG Publishing in 2001. Since 2008 she has mentored songwriters through individual online workshops (see suzankoc.com). Notable alumni include MILCK (whose song “Quiet” was the anthem of the 2017 Women's March and garnered 15 million views in 48 hours). She also teaches music publishing, songwriting, and creativity classes at UCLA Extension and Musician's Institute. Today we feature the incredible Kim Temple - a Juno-nominated musician who wears a few different hats in the Canadian music industry. Kim is head of the publishing and sync division at Six Shooter Records, a 23-year-old women-owned and women-led company based in Toronto. She is President of High Priestess Publishing, a joint venture created in partnership with Six Shooter whose core values are firmly aligned with those of the LGBTQ2S+ and racialized artist communities. Kim is also Senior Manager of Programming & Industry Relations at Music Publishers Canada which is the non-profit national trade association for music publishers. In her role there she oversees the Women In The Studio national accelerator, designed to support and uplift female-identifying, non-binary and gender fluid producer-songwriters. She also leads international song camps and B2B trade missions in key export territories. She currently sits on the music advisory committees for City of Toronto and Ontario Creates. Earlier this month she was presented with two awards at the Guild of Music Supervisors Sync Awards: Best Indie Label Sync Team and Sync Artist of the Year for Tanya Tagaq.

All of his life, Mike had been born and raised surrounded by music. Mike's musical journey first began by playing the ukulele at eight years old. Self taught, Mike found himself enjoying the splendors of music by joining of the Ukulele club in Elementary School. In Middle School, Mike picked up the trumpet and also started playing percussion. In High School, he took on the French horn. It was not until after he graduated from High School that he switched over to playing the guitar. As Mike's music career evolved, he went on playing live music regularly in Hawaii; mainly working the Waikiki circuit. In 2012, Mike Izon moved up the ladder and had won the Kollaboration Star Award and performed at the MNET Asian Music Awards Red Carpet Ceremony, in Hong Kong. When he returned to Hawaii, Mike had won another award of musical excellence at the Hawaii Stars Awards, in 2013. In 2018, Mike Izon had released his first major commercial hit, “Purple Haze.” In 2019, he and his music publisher had composed the hit, “Brown Sugar Girl,” which was featured on CBS's Magnum PI in 2019. Since then, Mike Izon has been a steadfast supporter for his community including ALS Cure Fundraising events and projects. Now in 2021, Mike returns stronger than ever by hitting the waves with his new post Covid feel good Island pop hit, “Summer Days Are Here Again!” Mike Izon's goal is to one day win a Grammy based on his steadfast message of aloha and his gifted talent from life's trials and tribulations; all within his world of music. Bobby Pileggi, his music publisher quotes, “there is no doubt that one day Mike Izon will win a Grammy for not only himself, but mainly for Hawaii Nei!”

If you've ever wondered what music publishers do on the “record side” of the music industry, you're going to find out on this week's episode of TAXI TV! Publishing executive Andrea Torchia has been in the music business for her entire adult life. She's the daughter of legendary record producer, Denny Diante, and learned how to pick hits at a very early age. Here's an excerpt from her bio: While other teenage girls might have enjoyed sleepovers, Andrea was evaluating playbacks at Devonshire and Conway studios. When her dad would bring boxes of demos, the two listened intently. “As he would break them down, I was his secretary,” Andrea remembers. “I might write ‘Lyrics not strong enough in the hook, ‘needs a bridge' or ‘double chorus not necessary.' I learned all about song structure.” While barely out of college, she began working in A&R, promotion and publicity at Chrysalis/ EMI while learning the music publishing business. As Creative Manager at Rondor Music Publishing, she represented contemporary and classic catalogs including the iconic songs of Gerry Goffin and Carole King. As Senior Creative Director of Zomba Music Publishing, she placed songs, connected writers and artists, and facilitated a roster with Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Macy Gray, and Justin Timberlake. At Universal Music Publishing, named Senior Director of Creative Services, she formulated relationships for Ron “Neff-U” Feemster, Harvey Mason Jr., and Lamont Dozier among others, while attaining covers for the company's extensive repertoire. Her valuable industry experience led to her appointment as Vice President, A&R for TAXI Music, where Andrea achieved multiple label, film television and commercial placements for the company's songwriters. Tapped as Vice President, Creative, with Razor & Tie Music Publishing, she worked the company's multiple format catalogs, while guiding creative input and fostering partnerships both domestically and internationally. Two long-term consulting endeavors – with pop powerhouse Rock Mafia Recordings, and 1111/Universal Music Publishing, a co-venture with 16- time Grammy winner David Foster, preceded her tenure as VP Creative with the U.S. division of the Japanese company Avex. Andrea expedited a diverse roster ranging from the legendary Burt Bacharach to her signee, hit songwriter-producer Tommy Brown, whose number one Billboard debuts included “Thank U Next” and “7 Rings” for Ariana Grande, plus songs and productions for Juice Wrld, Meghan Trainor and many others. It was at Avex that Andrea signed The Attire, sparking their transformation into a modern pop duo. Post Avex, she continued the artist development process as co-founder and Senior VP, Creative at Base Station Media. Don't Miss This Episode! We're really excited to have Andrea join us so we can get a real insider's look at what goes on behind the scenes at huge publishing companies today, and how things in the publishing world have evolved over the last decade or two!
