Dana and Tom with returning guests Kieran B (Host and Creator of the Best Picture Cast) and Jaylan Salah Salman (Film Critic for In Session Film, Geek Vibes Nation, and Keith Loves Movies) discuss the horror film Saw (2004) for its 20th anniversary: directed by James Wan, written by Leigh Whannell, music by Charlie Clouser, starring Cary Elwes, Danny Glover, and Ken Leung.Plot Summary: Saw is a horror film that takes a grim pleasure in its own sadism, positioning itself as both a grisly thriller and a twisted morality tale. At its core, the movie revolves around two men, Adam and Dr. Lawrence Gordon, who wake up in a dingy bathroom, chained to opposite sides of the room. They soon discover they are the latest victims of a deranged figure known as Jigsaw, a serial killer with a perverse mission: he doesn't just murder his victims—he forces them into life-or-death games where survival is determined by how far they are willing to go to save themselves.Director James Wan revels in pushing the audience's discomfort, presenting a relentless series of traps that are as much about mental anguish as physical pain. The characters' desperation is palpable, yet their choices feel less like genuine human decisions and more like pawns being moved by the screenwriter's hand. The result is a film that thrives on tension and shock but leaves little room for reflection.Chapters:00:00 Introduction to the Podcast and Guests02:47 Cast and Recognition for Saw04:54 Relationship(s) with Saw12:00 What is Saw About?20:45 Why Do People Like Horror Movies?28:37 Are There Any Good Horror Sequels?32:23 Plot Summary for Saw34:06 Did You Know?35:17 First Break36:10 What's Happening with Kieran and Jaylan39:46 Ask Dana Anything51:12 Best Performance(s)01:02:36 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)01:09:42 Second Break01:10:41 In Memoriam01:14:58 Tom Rant01:16:46 Best/Funniest Lines01:20:23 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:30:38 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:38:05 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:41:58 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:50:48 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:57:43 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total02:00:18 Remaining Questions for Saw02:10:10 Thank You to Our Guests and Final ThoughtsGuests:Kieran BHost and Creator of the Best Picture Cast; @bestpicturecast on X, IG, LetterboxdPrevious Episodes: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1957), Lost in Translation (2003),

Following the unexpected arrival of a ventriloquist dummy on his doorstep, and the sudden, violent death of his wife – two events that might be related – Jamie Ashen is arrested by Detective Lipton, a cop with a thing for electric razors. Lipton's also a by the books kind of guy who's convinced Jamie is responsible for his wife's death. But Jamie doesn't have time for games — he's determined to find out who or what killed his wife and tore her tongue out in the process. His search takes him back to his home town of Raven's Fair, where the superstitious residents suspect the spectral Mary Shaw, a long-dead ventriloquist, may be to blame. Seems Shaw was connected to the disappearance and ritual murder of families years back, then became the victim herself of a heinous crime. With Lipton on his tail, Jamie visits his aging father Edward, his young wife Ella, local mortician Henry and his demented wife Marion, who unspool a tale too fantastic to be true.  And slowly, the truth about Raven's Fair reveals itself to Jamie's unsuspecting, and for now human, eyeballs. Saw X is a 2023 American horror film and the tenth installment in the Saw film series, that serves as both a direct sequel to Saw (2004) and a prequel to Saw II (2005). It is directed and edited by Kevin Greutert and written by Peter Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg. The film stars Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith reprising their roles from the previous films, with Synnøve Macody Lund, Steven Brand, Renata Vaca, and Michael Beach. Set between the events of the first two films, John Kramer (Bell) travels to Mexico in hopes an experimental procedure may cure him, later discovering a scam within the operation. As retribution, he kidnaps those responsible and subject them to his trademark death traps. Originally intended to be the ninth installment of the series, the plot of the film was postponed in favor of a spin-off titled Spiral, from a story pitched by Chris Rock. A tenth installment was reported to be in development with Twisted Pictures in April 2021. Stolberg and Goldfinger, writers for the previous two entries of the series, announced they had completed the script in December 2021. Greutert, who had directed two other installments of the series and edited six, was also confirmed as the film's director. Charlie Clouser, who had composed all the previous films, returned to compose the score. Filming took place from October 2022 to February 2023 in Mexico City. Saw X was theatrically released by Lionsgate on September 29, 2023. It has grossed $57 million worldwide and received generally positive reviews from critics, with many describing it as the strongest entry since the first film while also singling out Bell's performance for praise --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcorn-junkies/message

Season 4 is here! Charlie Clouser (the Saw series, Nine Inch Nails) joins the show to kick-off the latest season. Charlie and I talk about not just his score for the latest Saw film - Saw X - but his work throughout the series, including the famous and essential "Hello Zepp" themes found in each film. Near the end, Charlie indulges me on my personal curiosity regarding the surprising number of 90s and early 2000s industrial musicians that have found their way into the film and scoring worlds, expanding it to cover the desire for filmmakers to bring in musicians on the fringes of music. During this, he hypes up a number of great composers and scores, something I absolutely love to see! Charlie's score for Saw X surprised me given the amount of melody, seemingly broader palette, and sheer variety throughout. It isn't necessarily surprising, given his fixation on finding the perfect array of sounds to bring onto each project - hand-picking them from his seemingly-bottomless well of sounds collected over the last 40 years. But there's also an extreme level of technical precision on these scores, with endless tempo changes so that the film and its characters seem to be constantly moving to the rhythm of his score. Saw X is currently in theaters, while Charlie's score, as well as many of his other scores, is available digitally on all major platforms.

Wonder who recorded it and how old they were. "Superbeast" - Humphrey, Zombie, Charlie Clouser 3:40 3rd single, released June 3, 1999Sounds like all Zombie songs; heavy and abrassive. Very 90's/2000's sound. The video is hilarious. "Dragula" - Humphrey, Zombie 3:42 Lead Single from the Album, Released Aug 24, 1998Gerat song, catchy riff, I will always associate this song with The Matrix. The audio clip "superstition, fear and jealousy" heard at the beginning of the song is a sample of dialogue from the 1960 horror film The City of the Dead (also known as Horror Hotel), and is spoken by Christopher Lee "Living Dead Girl" - Humphrey, Zombie 3:21 Second Single released Feb 16, 1999I didn't realize I knew this song, never knew the name of it. Again, all sound similar. Heavy and gritty. "Perversion 99" - Humphrey, Zombie 1:43This is a different song, def not what I expected. Just an instramental break. Sounds like commercial music or elevator music. It sounds VERY much like some phone hold music. "Demonoid Phenomenon" - Humphrey, Zombie 4:11Again, very heavy, but still catchy. Good video; it's a lot of filmed concert footage, and tons of topless girls. though, they were blurred. So much kenetic, chaotic energy. I can imagine they put on a good live show. "Spookshow Baby" - Humphrey, Zombie 3:38This one isn't as chaotic and messy as the other tracks. It's a good calm down track after the previous one. "How to Make a Monster" - Humphrey, Zombie 1:38This has a totally different sound. It's not as industrial. Almost punk-ish. But back to the chaos and energy. Sounds like it was recorded live or in a tin can. Weird sound. "Meet the Creeper" - Humphrey, Zombie 3:13Back to the Zombie sound; heavy, industrial, dark. "The Ballad of Resurrection Joe and Rosa Whore" - Humphrey, Zombie 3:55I like the intro, build up. It's not as metal/heavy as the others. There it is. "What Lurks on Channel X?" - Humphrey, Zombie 2:29I mean... It's kinda more of the same. I know he's saying different words in each song, but they mostly sound the same. "Return of the Phantom Stranger" - Humphrey, Zombie 4:32Obviously Zombie is into classic horror, and the organ opening of this song pays to that. This is more bareable since it's not so chaotic; but still heavy and dark. When the first Saw premiered in 2003, it rattled the foundations of the horror genre -- not just for its pioneering of gruesome, high-concept gory horror of a type that would come to be known as 'torture porn', but for its perversely iconic musical soundscapes. "Hello Zepp," with its grungy buildup and cacophonous, rising strings, quickly became a staple of the long-running Saw series, which is now in its ninth installment with 2021's Spiral: From the Book of Saw. Central to those disturbing melodies is composer Charlie Clouser, who got his start in the world of industrial music, working with the likes of Rob Zombie and Nine Inch Nails. He's scored every film in the Saw series since, one of the few creatives to stick around for every installment of Jigsaw's brutal, moralistic mindgames. With Spiral, though, it's a whole new ball game, with a new bag of tricks to set it apart from the grungier takes of Saws past. A soft continuation of the series, the Chris Rock-starring sequel takes a hard left into crime thriller territory, as a beleaguered beat cop (Rock) tracks down the culprit of a series of copycat murders one hot summer weekend. Clouser keeps the screeching metal more confined to the tongue-ripping "trap" scenes in favor of a warmer, more noir-tinged palate to suit the '70s-esque cop thriller direction in which the film dabbles. And yet, when he needs to, he plays the hits -- particularly a new version of "Hello Zepp," which sounds familiar but, in keeping with the series, has its own musical twists. For the podcast, I sit down with Clouser to chat about his loyalty to the series, the history of "Hello Zepp," and the ways in which Spiral changes the game. Spiral: From the Book of Saw is currently in theaters, and you can listen to the soundtrack on Spotify and other streaming services, courtesy of Lakeshore Records.

Charlie sits down for this All Access interview to discuss his path to a career in music, his techniques, what he learned from his career in music before composing, and of course we explore some of Charlie’s scores including his most recent one for Spiral: From The Book Of Saw.   Charlie discusses his early childhood and how he ended up on the music path, including his days as part of Nine Inch Nails and working with other artists. We look at Charlie’s first foray into scoring for visual media with the TV series Fastlane. Charlie then tells the story of how he got the job to score the first Saw film.   We discuss the evolution of the Saw franchise and what it’s like being one of the only people to have worked on all 9 films, and how to play within a horror franchise’s formula. Charlie talks about working with the various directors who came into the franchise and how he approached the industrial sound that the films needed. We also discuss how Spiral is branching away from the formula and how it required a different approach with the music.   We tackle topics like scoring against sound effects, finding the right tones and atmosphere, working with directors, scoring television, and where he thinks the entertainment industry is heading towards during these times of change.   Charlie is one of the most fun and insightful people to have a chat with, and his ability to wear many hats has proved to make him a versatile storytelling force.   A Film.Music.Media Interview | Produced & Presented by Kaya Savas

I quickly found he has done so much more throughout his career. He started his production career working under the legendary Charlie Clouser (Nine Inch Nails) on a Helmet record and the score for the first Saw movie. He quickly started producing his own records including Danny Worsnop (Asking Alexandria), Night Riots, Moon Fever and many more. Did I mention he also works with Dee Snider of Twisted Sister?
