Episode 72 features your hosts getting caught up, while somehow falling behind. Movies, games, and TV, oh my! (Including Peter Jackson's “Get Back”, “Being The Ricardos”, Spider-Man: No Way Home, West Side Story, Townscaper, and Phil's new tabletop puzzle organizer!). We hope you can handle it! Phil has a Samuel Adams Amber Lager and John drinks two different whiskeys: Phil plugs another podcast he's worked on: Northwoods Baseball Sleep Radio. He did some ads for it, including one featuring our very own narrator, Ed Unclehat! We talk about James Bond movies (more to come on this in a later episode), and brainstorm possible new 007 movie titles. Tim and Tay talk ambiguous and not-so-pretentious art films in this discussion on David Lowery's The Green Knight. SynopsisThis adaptation of the epic Arthurian poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight tells the tale of Gawain as he embarks on a quest to make a name for himself in the eyes of King Arthur's court and all of Britain. The Green Knight stars Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, and Ralph Ineson, was written and directed by David Lowery, and first hit theatres July 30, 2021. The Green Knight is available to rent on Google Play. Scene [57:18—104:27]Beaten, battered, and mentally defeated, Gawain enters a small seemingly abandoned cabin to rest. Quentin Tarantino's ethos was once described, efficiently, by the online writer Film Crit Hulk thusly: “Never hate a movie.” That ethos never had a better distillation than the film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood except for one joyous example — its novelization. On this episode I'm joined again by Tyler Coates and Ted Haycraft to discuss the expansion of the beloved movie. We talk:- the “literary” value of Tarantino's prose;- how Tarantino mixes film criticism with that prose;- which character benefits most from the novel's expansion of the film;- and why part the value of Tarantino releasing something new is his promotional circuit interviews.Also:- The reputation the 2019 film has developed two years out;- the (innocuous?) oddity of there being no people of color in the movie;- how the movie will likely age if its historical context is forgotten;- and the fates of the characters after the end credits and last page.Tyler Coates is currently an editor for the Hollywood Reporter. Past work has appeared in The Awl, Brooklyn Magazine, Esquire, GOOD, Gothamist, Nylon, Out, Town & Country, and the Village Voice. His work can also be found out at his website. The paperback novel of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is currently available from Harper Collins.
Indiana Jones may have been a staple of their childhoods, but neither Jonathan Divine nor Mike Overstreet often returned to the series' second entry. On today's episode we talk about the new and our first Pixar film, Onward! We go into depths on how the film was successful and what could've been done to make this film better. We reference Film Crit Hulk's article about Onward and expand on the aspects that really spoke to us. Along with that we talk about other sibling Pixar movies like Brother Bear & Frozen (among others) and how it matches up with this film.

Spike Lee életművével foglalkozó blokkunk második darabja a Do the Right Thing (Szemet szemért), egy brooklyni utcasarok egy napjáról szóló 1989-film. Mikor mondhatjuk egy filmről a székünkben való fészkelődés és kínos pillantások nélkül, hogy “fontos darab”? Mi a helyzet a hasonlóan kényelmetlen “provokatív” jelzővel? Hogyan viszonyul az 1986-os She's Gotta Have It könnyed hangvételéhez a Do the Right Thing? Hosszan beszélünk a film megtévesztően szórakoztató első kétharmadáról, mielőtt megpróbálnánk megmászni azt a morális hegyet, amelyet a finálé dózerol elénk. Mi különbözteti meg Spike Lee alkotását más, társadalmi problémákat, rasszok közti ellentéteket feldolgozó filmektől? Segítségül hívjuk Roger Ebertet is, hogy rendet tegyünk a lelki világunkban, de Spike Lee is megmondja a magáét azokról, akik szerinte hibásan értelmezik a Do the Right Thing csúcspontjának történéseit.
