Sam Clements is curating a fictional film festival. He'll accept almost anything, but the movie must not be longer than 90 minutes. This is the 90 Minutes Or Less Film Fest podcast. In episode 138 Sam is joined by film writer and producer Emily V. Gordon (The Big Sick). Emily has chosen Throw Momma From The Train (88 mins), Danny Devito's feature directorial debut. Released in 1987, the film stars Devito, Billy Crystal, and Anne Ramsey. Sam and Emily discuss her podcasting career with Kumail Nanjiani on The Indoor Kids, falling in love with Throw Momma From The Train on HBO, and what she would do if she ever met Danny Devito. It's back to the baseball diamond for Sports Movie February, as Erika and Paul take a closer look at 1993's The Sandlot. They get into how to play catch, how to make a s'more and how Benjamin Franklin Rodriguez is the world's most perfect child.
Welcome back, fuckbuddies! Ever mock up a hall pass or fake a headache to get out of dodgeball? Today, Jen + Lillian reflect on those seemingly innocuous childhood tendencies that, frankly... should have warranted a bit more adult intervention. With our collective goldfish memories, social withdrawal and chronic IBS, the kids are not, in fact, all right. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/allthefucks/message

Welcome back to SaysWhovia! Dan and Maureen are back on their bullshit, which means they are back on the bullshit of others. Ted Cruz is trying to get an actor to wrestle Jim Jordan, because that is the kind of sentence we have to say in 2020. A Republican congressperson gets COVID and just can’t work out how it could possibly have happened, since he’s only gone out constantly and been touching everything. Some states open. Nonsense abounds. But! There is also hope. Hope and change. There have been signs that the protests are having positive effects in regards to society, and non-positive effects in regards to COVID, which is a positive effect! Plus, good news from the Supreme Court? What the hell is going on? Dan and Maureen do not know, but they like it.But COVID is still very, very much with us, so Dan and Maureen go through the Says Who guide to saying no to all those people who want to go get drinks or something. No. Just say no.
In 2009 The New York Times ran a story about the New York Comedy Festival and the independent standup community that had become a hunting ground for late night shows looking for the next round of potential talent, citing Jenny Slate, Donald Glover, Aziz Ansari and Zach Galifianakis as formerly unknown comics lifted from the cramped rooms of obscure bars in hidden basements to a larger stage. The article’s new reference was a guy named Kumail Nanjiani, who “could be poised to follow… Or not.” On circumstance alone, “or not,” seemed more likely. Nanjiani grew up in Karachi, Pakistan (“not necessarily a very funny place”), raised Shia Muslim in a predominately Sunni nation. But a lot depends on how you see things. His dad was a psychiatrist (a fact he found inherently funny) with an inexplicable love of designer jeans (just blatantly funny). He got a taste of American comedy through movies his dad occasionally brought from the video store, and TV shows like Beavis and Butt-Head and Picket Fences. When he moved to the U.S. for college – and his own safety – he was most excited about being able to see movies and TV shows right when they came out. One of the first happened to be a Jerry Seinfeld comedy special on HBO. Nanjiani was 18 and had never seen standup before. A shy Computer Science/Philosophy double major, he finally worked up the courage to do a 30-minute set in his senior year. He walked on stage so nervous he could barely move, and walked off feeling ready for Letterman. Or at least Chicago. He got a day job and started doing standup at night, developing his first one-man show, Unpronounceable, which The Comic’s Comic called “a very personal and quite poignant work, punctuated by powerful punch lines.” It got him an agent and brought him to New York and the attention of the Times. Nanjiani never considered that comedy might not work out. He wrote standup material in the mornings, potential TV material in the afternoons and did open mics every night, twice a night if he could. Steadfastly refusing to look at the big picture, he focused only on each step. “What’s next? Now what’s next?” His wife has said she sometimes worried about paying rent, but never about his work ethic. The “nexts” started piling up quickly in the form of TV appearances on The Colbert Report, Saturday Night Live, Portlandia, Franklin & Bash, Veep and too many others to mention. Small movie roles (Collider called his scene in 2013’s The Kings of Summer the funniest part of the movie) started as a trickle and became a steady downpour – sixteen from 2013-2016 alone. In the biggest bit of karmic fortune, Mike Judge, whom Nanjiani had idolized since his Beavis and Butt-Head fandom, cast him as one of the stars of his hit series Silicon Valley. “When I was casting, I was looking for actors you could believe were really intelligent programmers but were also able to play the comedy of it all,” Judge told The Washington Post. “I thought he was fantastic.” As Dinesh Chugtai he veers between sarcasm and charm, and a blend of ambition and insecurity you might expect in a Pakistani immigrant programmer trying to be cool – and maybe a Pakistani immigrant comic who actually wasn’t very good at his five-year tech day job. We’re guessing Nanjiani sees the humor in that one, too. That kind of exposure can be heady stuff, but Nanjiani never let writing and standup take a back seat to his increasingly packed schedule (or his proudly geeky video game and X-Files podcast passion projects). In 2014 he co-founded The Meltdown, a Comedy Central standup series filmed in the back of a comic book store, featuring his loose, unrehearsed banter with co-host Jonah Ray, and guests like Nick Offerman, Marc Maron, Rachel Bloom, Fred Armisen and Reggie Watts. His second special, Beta Male, premiered on Comedy Central in 2013 to raves. From A.V. Club: “Kumail Nanjiani could easily be ‘that guy.’ He could be the Pakistani guy, joking about his otherness in America, his life growing up as a Muslim in Karachi. He could be the videogame guy, playing off his excellent podcast, The Indoor Kids, which caters to the thriving crossover crowd of gaming and alt-comedy nerds. But he’s not. He can weave those themes into his act without it feeling shticky.” Or too narrow. That praise grazes what he’s called the elephant in the room. His Muslim upbringing does play a role in his work, perhaps more unavoidably now than ever. But as his career progressed, Nanjiani determined not to ignore it, but also not to commoditize it or take roles that exaggerated it. His comedy became wider and his talent more apparent. He is relaxed and observational on any number of topics, and a master of setup, his build to a joke often funnier than the punch line itself. He has a comic’s timing and a storyteller’s ear. That sense for story finally made him turn to the biggest one in his own life. He penned an account of how his real-life girlfriend's serious illness jolted him into maturity and coming to terms with his conservative parents. His (now) wife Emily V. Gordon co-wrote the script, Judd Apatow produced, Michael Showalter directed, and Nanjiani went to acting class in order to play a fictionalized version of himself. The Big Sick sent studios scrambling at Sundance this year (Amazon won for $12 million); Variety wrote that he and Gordon “…mine their personal history for laughs, heartache, and hard-earned insight in a film that’s by turns romantic, rueful, and hilarious. It’s a no-brainer to connect with art-house crowds who like their comedies smart and funny, but this one deserves a shot at the multiplex, too. Where most movies might be content to follow the culture-clash comedy through its typical ups and downs, The Big Sick proves to be a far messier affair, and all the more rewarding for it.” Nanjiani recalls the first joke he ever wrote: “I wrote about how I always wanted to have a unit of measurement named after myself, because all the cool scientists had one. Then I’d do an act-out of a submarine commander telling his crew to turn the torpedoes up to 5 Nanjianis.” If you’re measuring in laughs, better turn it up to 11 Nanjianis.
Supervegan Brian and David Theobald III were expecting to chat with Amoeba this episode but were given the special treat of also being joined by her Mom, Cursy Smurf Erica. Both on one episode! We talked about: What do Nerds do when they can't go outside? In these interesting times it's important to still socialize and have fun. We talked bout how we accomplish that and had the very special bonus of a 6th graders perspective. Listener's Note: Amoeba is getting much better at podcasting as she realized, if she wants to listen to the episodes, she will blow her own eardrums out if she screeches. Much better audio this time.

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. So I thought I'd take Thanksgiving off this year and advantage to dig up this classic, apparently Thanksgiving-themed, episode of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast — yes, that’s what it was called back in November of 2015. I haven't heard this one in a while. But I looked at the list of clips - some of these shows aren’t even around any more - and I look forward to taking this journey back in time with you when the show was only a little more than four years old. Now-executive producer Marc Hershon was the host, I was the associate producer, and the show was still using the P word when referring to itself. I'll have a fresh batch of clips for you in two weeks. Until then, let's get to remembering together… • • • (Original blog content from November 23, 2015) What? Me, Marc Hershon, your host and toaster pastry? Back within a week with another installment of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast? Yes, it’s true. This is Succotash Clips, Epi 120. And we have a Thanksgiving Feast of comedy podcast clips for you. It’s a veritable spread of different flavors and — given the humor in some of them — truly a groaning board of a clip buffet in store for your ears this time around. We’ve got The All-Seeing Guys, Bitter Sound, Ear Goggles, Ice & The Face, The McCue Report, Primalcast, The Reigning Lunatic, Rob & Slim, The Vince Wylde Show and Who Charted? In addition to that earload, we’ve got a visit to the Podcast Graveyard, courtesy of our associate producer Tyson Saner, who also harvested a number of the clips we’ve got on hand. We also have another double dose of our Burst O’ Durst with political comedian and social commentator Will Durst, a rummage around the ol’ Tweetsack, and a brand new Henderson’s Pants commercial. Other than our ads from Henderson’s Pants, Succotash remains fitfully sponsor-free. The good news: you aren’t burdened by listening to those pesky ads. The bad news: money to keep this show going basically comes out of my pocket. You can help out with one of several methods, all done by visiting our homesite at http://SuccotashShow.com. You can click on the Donate button and shoot us some moolah. You can click on the Amazon banner at the top of the page and buy stuff at Amazon, then they give us a slice off the top. Or you can click on the link to our Succotashery and purch some merch, a percentage of which comes back to us after they print up whatever you buy. Or you can keep on listening to this show for free and just know that, in the back of my head, I’m thinking you’re just an electronic freeloader. No guilt, no judgement, though. The Clips Ear GogglesSo you might remember when I announced on this show earlier this year when the 10-year-old podcast known as Sibling Rivalry celebrated its decadeness was re-branded as Ear Goggles. I ran into 2/3’s of the hosting team – Jeremy Grater and Susan Black – last September at the 4th Annual Los Angeles Podcast Festival. Host #3 – Aaron Ristrow – lives on the East Coast, as opposed to his Seattle-based compadres. I chatted with them, which we featured during the PodFest upload frenzy, and they chatted with me for their show, which just dropped recently. The Rob & Slim Show Just this last week I was a call-in guest on the LIVE partycast known as The Rob & Slim Show. They’ve been retweeting our stuff the past few months and I had just had Tyson clip me off a chunk of a recent show but, I figured as long as I was going to be on their show, we may as well use THAT clip. Rob and Slim — I haven’t been able to find much else about them or the other voice that seem to float around during their ‘cast — run a 3+ hour live whoop-de-doo, in the style of a morning radio show as they put it and they cover the gamut of topics that are fresh in and around the news. Plus they drink. How can you lose? The Bitter SoundThis clip comes to us from The Bitter Sound, uploaded directly to us by host Davian Dent. He and sidekick Matt Bubbles managed to get OUR booth announcer, Bill Heywatt, to call in for a visit. (I can’t get the guy to stand still in Studio P long enough to do another Boozin’ With Bill segment yet these jokers get him just like that. I even pay the guy’s salary!) Oh well. If the only way we can get Bill on the show is with him being slightly tanked and yammering on a clip from someone else’s show, so be it. The Reigning Lunatic Friend-of-Succotash Geoffrey Welchman, who was the former host of the now-kaput Inverse Delirium podcast, came roaring back after a time away from Podcastland with a brand new offering! The Reigning Lunatic is a scripted situation comedy about a crazy king and his hapless servants and subjects. Geoffrey asked me to play a part in the series opener as Sir Jerry, and I, being an audio whore, was only too happy to comply. Ice & The FaceSo we had several direct uploaded clips this week (through our upload link at http://hightail.com/u/Succotash) including one from someone named Rick. His cover note with the upload reads: “Hello, my name is Rick, and I had a conversation with someone on twitter today from Succotash. I said I would provide a five minute clip from our comedy show, Ice and The Face, for your show. This clip is from episode #75 - 10.9.15. We hope you enjoy it! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email or twitter DM if you like. You're show is awesome, and we very much appreciate your interest and are looking forward to hearing back. Thank you, Rick” Cool. Thanks, Rick! Who Charted?I’m not sure we’ve ever featured a clip from this next show before. Not sure why. Who Charted? has been around forever and is quite beloved. They cover the hits that are charting in music and movies, with lots of comedy guests. The hosts are Howard Kremer and Kulap Vilaysack normally, but in this episode clipped by our Associate Producer Tyson Saner, Kulap is off, replaced by guest co-host Emily V. Gordon, who hosts another podcast – The Indoor Kids – with her husband, Kumail Nanjiani. Their guest is James Adomian, who’s gotten some attention lately because of his Bernie Sanders impression. The Vince Wylde Show Tyson harvested us a clip from a new-to-me show, The Vince Wylde Show, part of the AM Podcast Network. (Not sure what that is, but the AM comes from the network founder, Adam Mulholland.) The Vince Wylde blurb on the homesite reads, “The Radio Show with Attitude, Humor, and great production. From Schizophrenic Studios on the 36th Floor of the FMI Building.” I don’t know where the Fmi building is, either. In this clip, Vince and his partner on the show, a guy named Ben sample some soft drinks from a company called Carbonated Atrocities. Bottoms up! The McCue Report There’s a show from the Boston area that reached out to Tyson Saner directly, which is another way to go if you’re looking to be clipped on our show, called The McCue Report. It features comedian Jim McCue interviewing interesting and entertaining people, according to their homesite. The show’s been chugging along for about a year and a half now, and is part of Boston Comedy Festival Radio. In this clip, which was furnished to Tyson via Twitter, McCue chats with his guest, standup comedian Al Park, about working on the road. The All Seeing GuysOur man in Great Britain, Davian Dent, when he’s not producing his own podcasts – The Bitter Sound and Strange Times – is out looking for other fun stuff to put in his ears. This time he’s sent some of it along to us. It’s a clip from a show I’ve not caught yet, called The All-Seeing Guys, and features two blokes — are guys still called blokes in England? — named Greg and Joe. As I said, a cornucopia of podcasts for your Thanksgiving week listening pleasure. Take us with you on that long drive to the relatives' house or listen while you're digesting on the couch after stuffing your face. And for those of you NOT in the United States, have a great Thursday and Friday. Whether you're celebrating Thanksgiving or not, remember that I don’t care if you pass the turkey or the stuffing or the pumpkin pie, but I will always thank you for passing the Succotash! — Marc Hershon (Ending original blog post.) • • • And that was a show-sized clip of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast, as the soundcast Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast used to be known. I really enjoyed hearing that episode again I don't think I'd heard it since it was first uploaded and like a Thanksgiving turkey should be, that episode was absolutely what you could refer to as being well-stuffed. I don't really have anything else to add except to say thank you to Marc Hershon, Bill Heywatt, Joe Paulino, Scott Carvey, and you - the listener. Thank you for listening, Happy Thanksgiving and thank you for passing the Succotash. – Tyson Saner

Whether you're celebrating Thanksgiving or not, remember that I don’t care if you pass the turkey or the stuffing or the pumpkin pie, but I will always thank you for passing the Succotash! — Marc Hershon

Today the Indoor Kids welcome their old pal Trevor Moore, member of The Whitest Kids U Know and obsessive gamer, to talk about how he plays video games versus how his wife plays them. Also they get lost in the Twitter game and cannot stop.
Today Kumail and Emily welcome their good friend Adam Dorsey to the show. Adam used to be a video game tester and is also really into Amiibos, so he is uniquely qualified to be an Indoor Kids guest. Also he's awesome.
Feast your ears on Radio Destructoid episode 055 - MAGFest 13 or: Burning Man for Indoor Kids! This episode has Conor sporadically recording bits of randomness from MAGFest 13, being joined by Mr. Mxyxptlk (former host Aaron), drinking too much, and talking to anyone that would say a few words! Apologies for the sound quality, but this was all done on a phone in the middle of thousands of people. That said, enjoy!
Welcome to The Indoor Kids! Today you're getting another Kumail and Emily episode, where they discuss recent movie trailers, Superbowl stuff, Fifty Shades of Gray, and also play you some of their favorite video game commercials from the 90s.
Producer of The Meltdown, co-host of The Indoor Kids podcast and former couples therapist Emily Gordon joins the festivities this week to talk about rage oranges, webcams, Jesse making three Subway trips in a day, why rocket science is so damn hard, co-ed fraternities, people trying to get free therapy at parties, Emily's blog, decorating your house with Dave Kloc posters, astronomy sleuths uncovering the origins of Monet paintings, Brooks being cast in an upcoming movie, schizophrenia actually being eight different disorders, dating the person in front of you, algae that makes us idiots, the films of Dwight Yoakam, the Magnolia scene filmed in our neighborhood bar, out-of-date Philae comet-landing news, a robot that makes you think there's a ghost behind you, the Third Man Factor experienced by mountain climbers, British accents vs. American Southern accents, Jesse and Andy's counseling breakthrough, working with your spouse, the video game nostalgia of Ready Player One, and game recommendations including Splatoon, Unfinished Swan and Spirits.

Emily Gordon is a writer, performer, producer and host of the podcast The Indoor Kids (also on Nerdist). She is also a former therapist, and in recovery from hating herself! Emily and Dave discuss what makes one hate oneself, and what one does to combat it -- the walls put up and the facades presented. They also discuss getting better! And feeling better. And the road to being a happy person. They laugh a lot. Like a whole lot.
Today we are joined by the wonderful Griffin McElroy (Polygon, Maximum Fun) to talk about the wonders of E3- what were the trends? What fell flat? What got everyone excited? Let's find out! Next week, you'll hear the Indoor Kids con diary from E3, as they took their trusty tiny recorder to all the parties and demos, but had too much fun with Griffin to include it here!
Welcome to the final time capsule episode of The Indoor Kids (relax, that just means we're going back to all-new episodes next week!), and by far one of the most thought-provoking episodes we've ever done. This one was recorded in 2013. We welcome Tom Bissell, video game critic turned video game writer, to talk about how wrong he was in approaching video game criticism. Plus you also get Kumail and Emily, in the here and now, talking about our week in entertainment consumption and everything else worth discussing.
Howdy hey there, friends and neighbors! You're reading the companion blog entry for Epi87 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. (Just 12 episodes left until we hit 100, which will mark the end of Season 1. What can I say? Long seasons. Kind of like the winters in Game of Thrones…) In addition to a barrelful of podcast clips this episode, I had a fascinating chat with Geoffrey Welchman. I announced last week that GW was folding up the tent on Inverse Delirium, his 4-year-old podcast, which he has done. So then I thought it might be insightful to find out what led him to that decision and it is – so we’ll hear that in a little bit in addition to the final message to his listeners that he posted this past week. We also have our Burst O’ Durst segment with comedian Will Durst, a classic Henderson’s Pants spot, the Tweetsack segment, the 10 Most Active Shows In The Stitcher Top 100 Comedy Podcast List and, of course, our obligatory nod, salute, or genuflect to the boys (Dean Haglund & Phil Leirness) over at the Chillpak Hollywood Hour podcast, who just said goodbye to their 7th year in podcasting and mentioned us along the way. I also contrast and compare the old and the new theme songs for the Hob The Troll podcast. The 10 Most Active Shows in Stitcher's Top 100 Comedy Podcasts List Here's where we look at the ten podcasts that have moved up or down the Stitcher Top 100 Comedy Podcast chart in the past week. AT MOVED37 SModcast >> Jay & Silent Bob Get Old -1154 Jordan Jesse Go +1256 This Week In Blackness Radio +862 The Artie Lange Show -1069 Harmontown +1170 Thrilling Adventure Hour +1180 The Dana Gould Hour +2385 The Beige Phillips Show +886 Straight Outta Lo Cash +697 Nick DiPaolo -7 The Clips Chillpak Hollywood HourTo mark their anniversary, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness have just moved their operation over to Blogtalk Radio, which doesn’t change things for the listener but gives them a nice solid production base. Monster PartyBack in Succotash Epi53 I interviewed my friend and comedian Matt Weinhold who had, at the time, been experimenting with a new podcast idea that he and buddies James Gonis, Shawn Sheridan, and Larry Strohe – all Hollywood writers – had done on video where they drank adult beverages and talked about one main subject: Monster movies. Well, now Monster Party is an ongoing thing and in the most recent episode, the boys and guest Dana Gould sunk their teeth into vampire movies. In this clip they ponder the origins of Blackula. NerdistLast week I reviewed the Nerdist with Chris Hardwick and Jonah Ray – Matt Myra wasn’t on this particular episode, where they interviewed director/actor/writer Jon Favreau, who has a new movie out that he both directed AND starred in called Chef. In this clip, they talk about spoilers and puzzle over the etiquette of how long you should wait before talking about a show. IllusionoidOne of my favorite podcasts continues to be Illusionoid, which is an improvised science fiction comedy podcast out of Toronto. I’ve interviewed the three guys – Paul Bates, Lee Smart, and Nug Nahrgang (the best name is podcasting) – before and met them when they were in San Francisco for the SF Improv Festival last year. Haven’t played ‘em for a while though, so here’s a clip from their recent LIVE episode from Comedy Bar in Toronto, along with their special guests Craig Anderson, Ashley Comeau, and Kyle Dooley of Bad Dog Theatre. Hob The TrollSome TV shows used to have very specific theme songs – think about things like the Addams Family – or an even better example in this case is Gilligan’s Island, where the theme song changed after the first season to include mentioned The Professor and MaryAnne instead of referencing them simply as “all the rest”. Hob The Troll is a show that is hosted by a character that pops up at Renaissance Faires around the country. He sings and does comedy and is easily the happiest, non-goat-eating troll around. In podcast form, Hob The Troll features guest characters, often played by actors and comedians, such as Mark Gagliarti’s King John. He recently upgraded his show’s opening theme song, both versions of which are so specific that I thought it would be fun to contrast and compare. And then I play a short clip with Hob and Corey Eno Ruffin, the guy who did the new theme song for the show. Crunch Time ShowI got a note and a request from Wayne “Crunchie” Baglin, co-host of the Crunch Time Show (along with his wife The Scully), a podcast that looks at a myriad of geekiness, from games and movies to anything else that geeky nerdlings enjoy. They have a feature on the show called the "Random 5" where their showboard computer asks 5 random questions which you answer, then you get to ask one of your own. So Wayne asked if I’d play the Random 5 and here’s what happened… The Bonn & Obo ShowIt’s been a long time coming but Epi9 – NINE! – of the Bonn & Obo Show has finally dropped. It’s a pretty inventive show BUT, since Bonn and Obo seem to rarely – if ever – get along, it take awhile to get those shows out. This last one took a solid YEAR. Which is why Bonn moonlights on The Strange Times Show as well. In this clip, Obo has had enough disrespect from his mic mate, Bonn, and decides to file a complaint. Cashing In With TJ MillerHave you had a chance to catch Silicon Valley, the new Mike Judge comedy on HBO yet? Really funny, at least for those of us that live within spitting distance of the real Silicon Valley. And TJ Miller is one of the best parts of the show. He also can’t seem to showing up as a guest on the Cashing In podcast, which is probably why they’ve subtitled it With TJ Miller. Comedian Cash Levy hosts and TJ does what he does best, which is to wreak havoc. The Dork ForestJackie Kashian and her show The Dork Forest continues to root out the well-known and semi-well-known who are into sometime some obscure or even archaic stuff. This snippet comes from her Epi227 with guest Emily Gordon – co-host of the Indoor Kids with husband Kumail Nanjiani. Jackie and Emily chat about comedy and mental health. Center City ComedyA quintet of Philadelphia’s comedians - H. Foley, Kevin Ryan, Tom Cassidy, Reggie Conquest, and Andrew Schiavone – belly up to the mic and deliver up jokes, insults, and opinion about a variety of topics for Center City Comedy. The clip they sent in starts off about playing school basketball then sidetracks into a discussion about one of the guy’s long-lost classmates, a discussion which then disintegrates into unstoppable, contagious giggling. All right, it’s time to saw goodbye to Epi87. Until next time, don’t be afraid to shop at Amazon by using the oh-so-handy banner at the top of our SuccotashShow.com page.
