This week's guest is a man more used to asking the questions - the writer and broadcaster Clive Anderson. A former barrister, Clive turned to comedy and wrote for the likes of Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones before gaining radio & television fame as the host of top improvisational comedy series Whose Line Is It Anyway? He then went on to present a series of chat shows and interviewed some of the biggest stars on the planet, including Spike Milligan, and it's this that we take as our starting point. Clive talks about his career and many of the shows and people he's been involved with, including WLIIA, Loose Ends, If I Ruled The World, Peter Cook, Tony Slattery, John Sessions, Graeme Garden and Keith Allen. Recording of a debate at the Battle of Ideas festival 2023 on Sunday 29 October, at Church House, London. Subscribe to the Academy of Ideas Substack for more information on the next Battle and future events: https://clairefox.substack.com/subscribe INTRODUCTION At the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Comedy Unleashed's show, featuring Graham Linehan, was cancelled because the venue did not ‘support his views' and his presence would ‘violate their space'. The edgy spirit that used to characterise the Edinburgh Festival Fringe specifically, and stand-up comedy more generally, seems to have evaporated. There was no outcry from comedians attending the festival and very few publicly expressed even the mildest of support for free expression in the arts. Earlier that year, Nigel Farage was debanked by Coutts, for expressing views that go against the bank's ‘values'. Despite the bankers themselves having admitted fault, comedian Omid Djalili publicly sided with the elite bank. When comedians see no problem with using the denial of banking services as a form of punishment for holding certain views, how can they claim that they are ‘punching up'? Why do comedians increasingly side with the Establishment? How can comics say that they are ‘punching up' when they support the people being ‘cancelled' by corporations? As society becomes more authoritarian, where is the satirical response and creative backlash? Emma Barnett hears from one of the women alleging she was assaulted by Russell Brand. Speaking for the first time since accusations became public, 'Alice', who has accused Russell Brand of sexual assault when she was a teenager, says Brand's emphatic denial of the allegations of rape and sexual abuse against him is "insulting". 'Alice', who had a relationship with Brand when she was 16 and he was 30, says she wants to start a conversation about changing the age of consent. On her first day back at the Woman's Hour helm after maternity leave, Emma gets some advice and reflection from someone who returned to work after a similar break, the global literary force that is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Author of bestselling books including Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, plus essays and short stories, she has just released her first children's book, Mama's Sleeping Scarf. You'll no doubt be familiar with the book Frankenstein - but how much do you know about its author Mary Shelley? That's a question that led director, Lucy Speed, and producer, Deborah Clair, to write, direct and produce their new play that's about to start touring in the UK. Conception - Mary Shelley: The Making of a Monster tells the story of a journey of self-discovery, as the Frankenstein author returns, years later, to Lake Geneva where she wrote her famous novel. The play is hitting the stage around the 200th anniversary of the first publication of the novel under Mary Shelley's name - having originally been published anonymously. Artist and author Fleur Pierets embarked on a performance art project with her wife, Julian, in 2017, aiming to get married in all the countries where same-sex marriage was legal at the time. But their dream was cut short when Julian was diagnosed with late-stage brain cancer in early 2018 and died six weeks later. It's a story Fleur has put down on paper in her book, Julian, which has just been translated into English and released in the UK. Since the 1980s, the comedian and actor Doon Mackichan has been a TV regular, starring in programmes like Two Doors Down, Smack the Pony and Brass Eye. She has also played plenty of roles on stage. She dissects how today's culture still expects women to adhere to stereotypes, some of which she refuses to act out, as described in her memoir, My Lady Parts. Emma Barnett speaks to Samaneh Savadi, an Iranian feminist activist who specialises in international law. A new independent standards body, the Creative Industry Independent Standards Authority, is being set up in the UK so that concerns over behaviour can be raised and investigated confidentially. Emma talks to its CEO, Jen Smith. Sarah-Jane Nichols, former BMX racing world champion, talks to Emma about qualifying for the world championships 36 years after she first retired from the sport. Since the 1980s, the comedian and actor Doon Mackichan has been a TV regular, starring in programmes like Two Doors Down, Smack the Pony and Brass Eye. She has also played plenty of roles on stage. Doon talks to Emma about her recollections of those parts and dissects how today's culture still expects women to adhere to stereotypes, some of which she refuses to act out, as described  in her memoir, My Lady Parts. Explicably, the nonce one. In the grand tradition of Brass Eye, our resident pedophile expert, Helen, talks us through why they did their BA dissertation on pedophiles and pedophile rehabilitation, and how it's made them the superstar they are now.We talk about the construction of sexuality, Lacanian notions of desire, Epstein's flight logs, and flesh out our theory that money makes you a nonce. Plus, we libel ourselves! What could be more fun! In all seriousness, this is an episode about pedophiles and child sexual assault, so it inherently comes with a big content warning. The series was created and presented by Chris Morris, written by Morris, David Quantick, Peter Baynham, Jane Bussmann, Arthur Mathews, Graham Linehan and Charlie Brooker and was directed by Michael Cumming.Originally planned as a spin-off from The Day Today (1994), the pilot (then called Torque tv™) was passed on by the BBC. Channel 4 commissioned a new pilot, which would become called Brass Eye (mixing together the titles of two popular current affairs shows, Brass Tacks and Public Eye). The series satirised media portrayal of social ills, in particular sensationalism, unsubstantiated establishmentarian theory masquerading as fact, and creation of moral panics, and is a sequel to Morris's earlier spoof news programmes On the Hour (1991–92) on radio and The Day Today (1994) on TV. The series stars Morris's The Day Today colleague Doon Mackichan, along with Gina McKee, Mark Heap, Amelia Bullmore, Simon Pegg, Julia Davis, Claire Skinner, John Guerrasio, Hugh Dennis and Kevin Eldon. AND, he's the main who stitched together the stupendous Stan and Ollie and the blood-chilling Ghost Stories. He talks about how he got there from a career start as an in-debt dispatch rider and a chance meeting in a pub.

Lately, Chris Morris has been basing a lot of his absurdist comedy on real life world events. His new film, The Day Shall Come, is kind of a farce about terrorism and the FBI's efforts to fight it. The film tells a complex and often bizarre story that is almost entirely based on real things that happened in the counter terrorism world. Chris Morris joins us to talk about his new movie. He'll chat about reading court transcripts, talking with journalists, even attending trials to really understand what goes on at the Bureau. Plus, we'll talk about his other brilliant works of satire The Day Today and Brass Eye.

EP—IV. Mr. Bingo likes to provoke with his work. And translate this provocation into an analog experiences for us! Something he discovered during his Hate Mail project back in 2011, where he asked strangers if they wanted to buy offensive postcards made by him. People loved it, and he had to close the service because he couldn’t keep up with the demand. Fast forward, in 2015 Mr. Bingo successfully funded his self-published book Hate Mail: The Definitive Collection via Kickstarter. The book is a retrospective of the project showcasing 156 of his favorite postcards. Since then Mr. Bingo gives talks all around the world about everything he has learned, from the Hate Mail project, the Kickstarter campaign, interacting with strangers on Instagram and Twitter and just doing what he thinks is fun to do. We wanted to know how his world tour is going and what he has learned from giving all these presentations. Next to that Mr. Bingo gives great insights in how he prepares before he goes on stage and why he thinks giving talks about your work on stage is so important. Enjoy the show! http://thecomedycast.com Today you'll be hearing from Bilal Zafar. We started off the interview talking about Bilal already preparing new material for this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, we spoke as well a bit about Bilal family history, his mother and father moving from Pakistan to Britain. Bilal's family had just celebrated a wedding in the family so I was curious to ask him some questions about that as I know next to nothing about Muslim religious ceremonies. We spoke about how and why Bilal got into comedy and he got straight into his comedic influences growing up, Vic & Bob, Alan Partridge and in particular Chris Morris with Brass Eye, The Day Today and Blue Jam. Bilal also spoke about him going to university to study script writing and deciding that the best way to get noticed and get things done was to get a name for himself on the stand-up comedy scene so he took the plunge. We talked about his first gig, going blank and using it to his advantage and how he had to battle a bit with shyness before getting used to being on stage. Bilal won the 2016 NATYS (New Act of the Year Show) award so we had to speak about that and all the doors that it has helped open for him, we spoke about him getting signed by an agency thanks to it and how they came in handy during his Edinburgh Fringe Show. We had a chat then about Bilal getting into some acting roles and he revealed he'll be appearing on Rob Delaney & Sharon Horgan's show Catastrophe in the future, we spoke too about comedy panel shows, their popularity and a little about how people are auditioned for them. We spoke then about last year's show Cakes and how it was all kicked off by his brother joking around with some racism he'd seen on Twitter one day. That got us talking about social media and the power that it has and how people give it more weight that it probably deserves. Finally then we chat about how Bilal likes to work on his act and his writing process and how the writing is the real work compared to what we see on stage.
