The Polyphonic Spree band founder Tim Delaughter was looking for innovative ways to get people to listen to the entirety of his latest album called Salvage Enterprise. He was driving around a lot of speakers in his van and setting up pop-up listening parties around his home town when he thought there should be a better way to coax people into listening to his entire album, which is something that's a lot more rare in today's fragmented media ecosystem. He worked with Scott Berman as his long-time collaborator on visuals to recruit a number of different animators and filmmakers to create a dome version featuring his entire album called RESOLUTION: A CINEPHONIC RHAPSODY FOR THE SOUL. It's the first time SXSW has been able to curate a dome experience (which showed on the main showroom floor), and it was one of the experiences that was able to quickly fill up their 20 available slots per hour across their six showings a day. It ended up taking home the Audience Award for the XR Experience Spotlight, and was one of the hotter tickets of the exhibition with people rushing to sign up as soon as the doors opened. I had a chance to speak with Director Scott Berman, Polyphonic Spree Founder Tim Delaughter, and Producer Ryan Hartsell about the process of putting this dome experience together. We begin 2025 by going back 23 years to discuss our favourite songs of 2002, including emo classics, motivational hardcore, sparkly piano pop, terrifyingly positive psychedelic religious cults, and THE GREATEST GUITAR RIFF OF ALL TIME.We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Christina Aguilera ft Redman, Aqualung, Bright Eyes, Vanessa Carlton, Cousteau, The Delgados, The DIllinger Escape Plan Ft Mike Patton, Down, Frou Frou, Hatebreed, Idlewild, Isis, Jay-Z Ft Big Boi, Killer Mike, & Twista, July Skies, Ben Kweller, Avril Lavigne, Malcolm Middleton, Miss Black America, Nada Surf, Nine Inch Nails, Opeth, The Polyphonic Spree, Porcupine Tree, Sonic Youth, theSTART, Sigur Ros, Taking Back Sunday, Tech N9ne, Wilco, and James Yorkston & The AthletesFind all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/13AsY6By1DI8knbl7TpMFx?si=cd88b8d2738249feFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

John launches Sarah Kinsley who reflects on working with John on her latest album, “Escaper”, highlighting the collaborative nature of music production and the challenges of translating studio work to live performances. ----------------- LAUNCHLEFT OFFICIAL WEBSITEhttps://www.launchleft.com LAUNCHLEFT PATREON https://www.patreon.com/LaunchLeft TWITTER https://twitter.com/LaunchLeft INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/launchleft/ FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/LaunchLeft --------------------- In This Episode: [5:30] John Congleton's Early Music Journey [10:48] The Role of Artists and Creativity [16:43] Mentorship and Influence of Steve Albini [21:33] John launches Sarah Kinsley [27:06] Creating Music with Physical Instruments [33:07] The Impact of Technology on Music Creation [38:25] Social Media and Artistic Perception Key Takeaways: Everyone is inherently creative, akin to breathing. It's about recognizing and nurturing that creativity in everyday life. Congleton believes that creativity is as natural as breathing. Everyone possesses it, but often, people forget their innate artistic potential. Recognizing and nurturing this creativity can lead to personal fulfillment and innovation. Artists serve as conduits for expressing the human experience. They capture the essence of what it feels like to be alive at a particular moment in time, offering insights that go beyond mere information through all forms of art and expression. The digital age presents new challenges, such as the instant playback of music and the pervasive influence of social media. Artists must balance these tools with their creative instincts to maintain authenticity. Performing live offers a unique opportunity to connect with audiences in a shared, ephemeral experience. It allows artists to reinterpret their work and engage with listeners on a deeper level. Tim DeLaughter is an Emmy nominated singer, songwriter, performer, and producer of the musical group The Polyphonic Spree. Formed in 2000 following a period of heartbreak, confusion, and uncertainty as his original band Tripping Daisy fell apart in 1999, Tim started over again. Accompanied by 23 other collaborators, draped in robes, and drunk on the natural exuberance of a new chapter, he introduced The Polyphonic Spree with the now-classic 2002 debut, The Beginning Stages of… The signature “Light & Day/ Reach for the Sun” surged through popular culture for two decades, appearing everywhere from the Academy Award-winning 2004 classic Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind to a 2017 episode of Girlboss. Along the way, the band released several albums, including Together We're Heavy (2004), The Fragile Army (2007), Yes It's True (2013), and Psychphonic (2014). And in 2023, they embark on their next season with their full-length offering, Salvage Enterprise. Salvage Enterprise physical records CD's Cassettes: goodrecordstogo.com
What robed goodness! This episode Phillip and David get to spend time with the frontman and mastermind behind The Polyphonic Spree, Tim DeLaughter. They've just released brand new music that is stunningly beautiful. The record is called Salvage Enterprise and it is a treasure to enjoy, especially front to back, in order as it was intended. We'll hear all about that and what it took to get here - it's been about a decade since their last release, and Tim shares some details around that. We also learn about the months leading up the release and how he partook in a listening experience, taking the music on the road to play for people in parks and various locations to try it out and get feedback (and that badass photo of him). This is also the 4th guest this year that was a iconic musical fixture for Phillip during his college years, as Tim was the frontman of Tripping Daisy back then. He'll take us through the usual chronology of their story and how that chapter closed, only to open a new one with The Spree. Which lead to some cool "firsts" that we'll talk about in commercials (Apple/VW) and television (Scrubs).Website: thepolyphonicspree.comYouTube ChannelSpotifyBe sure to check out a show if you can, especially the Holiday Extravaganza in Dallas in mid-December, or their planetarium shows that will be coming in 2024.As always, our hope is to bring you "your next favorite band". Tim is a Lakewood dad with four kids and a wife who runs a restaurant (Lounge Here) to which he is sometimes summoned to do handyman work. He's also a rockstar, making his name first with Tripping Daisy and now serving as frontman for The Polyphonic Spree. The latter is dropping a new album, Salvage Enterprise, on November 17. We talked with Tim about how recording that album broke him out of a years-long depression and why kids today can't seem to listen to a song that lasts longer than a minute thirty. Also, we talked about whether Jesus ever rode a triceratops and the Dallas-based Institute for Creation Research. If you dig this podcast, consider subscribing to D Magazine.

Lacy and Josh Vetter from the When Cinephiles Attack Podcast are the guests for our 2023 Valentine's Day episode and they're joining Ryan and Nicole to talk about the soundtrack to Michel Gondry's 2004 film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which bounces between Jon Brion's score and songs from artists such as Beck, The Polyphonic Spree, and The Willowz. From discussing the importance of the score to the needle drop of Beck's cover of The Korgis' "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime", all the music adds to this trippy, kind of Sci-Fi, romance. We talk about Jon Brion's career as composer producer, how the film elevated that status of Gondry and Brion to the point where they were producing and drumming on a very popular hip hop album, and how Jon Brion has worked on everything from animated films to Beyonce's Lemonade since this soundtrack dropped. Also, we all share stories of films that we had to take a break from because of humiliating experiences attached to them. Our sponsor for this episode is Podtastic Audio! If you're looking to create a podcast with professional sound, check out Podtastic Audio at:https://www.podtasticaudio.com/easyFor More Information about When Cinephiles Attack:IG: https://www.instagram.com/cinephileattackTwitter: https://twitter.com/CinephileAttackIf you'd like to support Soundtrack Your Life, we have a Patreon, where you'll get bonus episodes and more!https://www.patreon.com/soundtrackyourlife
Annie Clark has been a musician touring with artists for quite a while, including Sufjan Stevens and The Polyphonic Spree. In 2007, she would debut with her album, Marry Me, a folksier take than we would be familiar with in coming years. Her sophmore album, Actor, is a more realized project. This week, we discuss St. Vincent.

The brand new $375 million Moody Center is officially open today after yesterday's ribbon cutting ceremony featured UT Minister of Culture Matthew McConaughey breaking into song to "bless the Mood". Texas basketball coaches Chris Beard and Vic Schaefer spoke at the event as well. The first concert is tonight with John Mayer, the first sporting event will be the Moody debut of the professional bullriding team the Austin Gamblers on August 26. A task force organized by Governor Greg Abbott after the disastrous Astroworld Festival incident last fall in which 10 people died has released its findings and recommendations, and a California-based concert safety consulting firm has found those recommendations "very disappointing" and "very superficial". Some travelers at ABIA are still wearing masks, but many are not, following this week's lifting of federal masking mandates for air travel. Austin ISD is seeking input from district parents on its proposed human sexuality curriculum, due in part to changes in state standards. A local man is charged with criminal mischief after pouring red dye on a woman walking out of the Domain's Louis Vuitton location during a protest at the store. Pease Park is displaying a memorial flag array to remember locals who have lost their lives to HIV and AIDS, it will be up through Sunday. Hometown media hero Bobby Bones is set to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Arkansas. Just up the highway, Lake Waco is being recognized as the first Texas lake to eradicate its zebra mussel infestation - local waterway administrators are taking note. Austin has been recognized as the best city in the country for dating, based on our large population of young, single people, Austin-based online dating platforms, and quality date night spots. The annual "Hi How Are You" concert inspired by Daniel Johnston will return for the first time since the pandemic began on May 4 at ACL Live with Grouplove, Polyphonic Spree and more. Price increases may be on the way to local craft breweries due to rising costs of ingredients and supply chain problems. Austin lifeguards have a suggestion to help the city overcome its shortage of lifeguards: a living wage. And drought conditions have gotten extremely bad in the nearby Texas Hill Country, but we've still not reached the severity of the 2011 drought - rain chances for today thru Saturday have decreased in the forecast, but Sunday through Tuesday still look promising.
This is the last episode of the Christmas season, but The Twelve Songs of Christmas is a year-around affair, so the conversations will continue in January after I take a much-needed week off. This week's episode includes an interview with filmmaker Mitchell Kezin, whose documentary Jingle Bell Rocks! takes a deep dive into the world of Christmas music, talking to people who collect it and create it. It's streaming on Hulu and Amazon Prime, and we'll talk more about the movie next year, but this week we discuss its origins including the songs and ideas that set him on the path for a documentary on Christmas music. Then I talk to songwriter Jim McCormick, an old friend and successful songwriter in Nashville. Last year, he co-wrote his third number one, Gabby Barrett's "The Good Ones," and we catch up on the story behind that, as well as some of his favorite country Christmas songs. We talk about Kacey Musgraves, Randy Travis, Alan Jackson, Luke Bryan and more, thinking about the songs from the songwriter's or the industry's perspectives. Finally, I talk to young country artist Bailey James, who is still finding her audience. We talk about dealing with COVID times and her two Christmas recordings, which at the time of the interview made up a quarter of her output. How does Christmas music create marketing opportunities? Alexandra Scott returns this week to discuss two of Phoebe Bridgers' Christmas songs--"The Christmas Song" and her cover of Merle Haggard's "If We Make it Through December." We also hear some of our favorite contemporary Christmas albums, JD McPherson's Socks and Kelly Finnigan's A Joyful Sound, and The Polyphonic Spree, who put tickets on sale for their 2022 Holiday Extraganza this week. JD, Kelly, and Tim DeLaughter of the Spree have all appeared on Twelve Songs. We also heard new lofi Christmas music this week from Brooklyn's The Fundamental Sound. Last week, my story on the influence of Vince Guaraldi's soundtrack to A Charlie Brown Christmas appeared in The New Orleans Advocate. This week, a story I wrote on Christmas on Death Row, the Death Row Records' Christmas album, appeared in The New York Times. It's based in part on an interview on the podcast with Death Row vocalist Danny Boy and label exec John "JP" Payne from earlier this year. I'm going to take a week off and return in January with a new episode. Christmas will be over the conversations continue. Lilli Lewis is an American folk and Americana singer, songwriter, and pianist based in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is sometimes known as the "Folk-Rock Diva Americana, her third full album for Louisiana Red Hot Records. The album was co-produced by Lewis and iconic indie producer Mark Bingham (Peter Stampfel, Hal Wilner, Allen Ginsberg…). Notable guest artists include cellist Rick Nelson (Afghan Whigs, Polyphonic Spree), folk favorite Gina Forsyth, and Seattle Blues Legend Lady A. The album will be released on CD and across all digital platforms on October 29th. Thanks to the perils of five pandemic-era hurricanes, Americana was recorded across more than twice as many spaces, with the bulk of the load performed in New Orleans at Marigny Studios (recorded by Rick Nelson), and at Bingham's own Nina Highway in Henderson, Louisiana. After performing for a full house at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation's last show before lockdown, Lewis conceived the album amid quarantine conditions that imposed an indefinite pause in an otherwise booked-out performance year. Without the pressure of upbeat, danceable shows on the agenda, Lewis turned to a bag of story songs that she felt didn't fit the New Orleans club scene. It's getting near the end of Your New Opinion, and the boys are looking back on old topics. What better time than to do a rematch on some forgotten debates! Each of Nick, Ben, and Ryan pick old ideas on the spot and have the other two come up with one point for their chosen side! Discussion points include: Dune, worms, moral dilemmas, soap operas, Squid Game, internet providers, YouTube, saving lives, road designs, incubators, mystique, and The Polyphonic Spree.
Last week, Kristin Chenoweth was part of the episode focused on A Sentimental Christmas, an album of remakes of songs by Nat "King" Cole. Today, we continue that conversation to cover her new Christmas album, Happiness Is ... Christmas and 2008's A Lovely Way to Spend Christmas. This episode also includes my interview with country legend Ronnie Milsap, whose Christmas with Ronnie Milsap was reissued this year, and guitar hero Paul Gilbert, who got in the Christmas music game this year with his new album, TWAS. Unfortunately, we had a wifi disconnect and, as you'll hear, had to pick up more or less where we left off. That gives us a choppy moment part way in, but that's life on the Internet. This episode also includes new music from New Orleans-based jazz vocalist Meryl Zimmerman, who released A Very Meryl Christmas this year, and a cover of John Prine's "Christmas in Prison" by Aidan & the Wild, Lewin, and the Revanche Family. It's on Another Christmas Vol. 2, and I'll talk to someone from Revanche Records in Amsterdam next year about the label sampler as a marketing strategy. This episode also includes new music from Americana band Loose Cattle, who recently cut a version of Neil Young's "Star of Bethlehem" with the holidays in mind. Michael and Kimberly of Loose Cattle were early guests on Twelve Songs, and if you're in New Orleans, they'll play a holiday show Saturday at The Broadside with many of their musical friends. Finally, the episode closes with a version of "The Christmas Song" by The Polyphonic Spree. I interviewed Tim DeLaughter of the Spree last summer about their then-new album Afflatus and their Holidaydream Christmas album. At the time, he said that they planned to bring back their Holiday Extraganza this year in Dallas. It's on for December 18, and last time I checked, there were a few tickets still on sale. I'll be there this year, and if your tastes run toward the maximalist and psychedelic, it might be for you too. If you haven't already done so, please do what you have to do to get Twelve Songs in your podcast feed. You can find us at Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Pandora, and Spotify.
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Brothers Koren with Daybreaker over Zoom video!! The Daybreaker community releases ‘Joy Generation' a collaboration with ace songwriters The Brothers Koren!'Joy Generation' is a unique and inspiring song crowd-sourced in real-time during a creative jam session by 350 members of the Daybreaker community. In case you haven't heard, Daybreaker is one of the most popular and innovative organizations in the wellness and dance space, fusing yoga and meditation with next-level dance events in unique spaces around the world. They have toured arenas with Oprah and been featured by The Today Show, New York Times, Mashable, Elle, WSJ, Buzzfeed, and Vice, and partnered with Nike, Samsung, AMEX, and more. They have collaborated on events with artists like Gloria Estefan, Boyz II Men, SOFI TUKKER, Above & Beyond, Dionne Warwick, and more. The never before attempted song-writing method resulted in ‘Joy Generation', a song that recalls the most epic and exuberant moments of Mumford And Sons, MGMT and The Polyphonic Spree, and yet is so much more, expressing the relief and sense of communion that is balm for these times. In March 2020 we began a new experiment hosting dance parties from our living room. We ended up serving over 200K people in 112 countries to dance and invite joy into their homes during the height of the pandemic when spirits needed it the most.We asked our community members to stick around after to write our new Daybreaker anthem with us. 350+ community members stayed to attempt something never done before: to lace together a song while miles apart, expressing the palpable anticipation of a return to IRL. We longed for an anthem that would take us out of the darkness and into a new more hopeful generation. We sat down in front of our little cameras, intent to harmoniously surface verses about the start of a new cultural Renaissance. The Brothers Koren masterfully shepherded us through the process of co-creating the song. Someone would spontaneously unmute themselves and provide a note, then another, and another: ideas. phrases, lyrics floated across the web. We jammed, we cried, we laughed...And then suddenly, we had an anthem, freeing and naming us: The Joy Generation.' We want to hear from you!
