Resiliency is not something that’s easy to find. Michael Bentt’s career has shown a lot of it and it’s not lost on him how the ups and downs of his life have helped him find his true calling. On this week’s episode, I had the pleasure of sitting down with a man of many talents and former heavyweight champion of the world as he talks about just how hard it is to get up when life knocks you down. His incredible story of overcoming adversity and finding your passions is a part of our open and honest discussion. Michael and I discuss how his relationship with his father and the death of a friend made him pursue a career in boxing, what went into his celebrated amateur career, how his first professional fight shaped one part of his life, and what it’s like to be labeled a “bum.” You’ll find out more about what it’s like to rebound after an extremely tough loss, why you shouldn’t look past an opponent, especially when it’s for a title fight, how his first career ended with him in a coma, and how a book sparked his second career as an actor. This is an engaging discussion that shines a light on a man who came back from the brink of death to achieve even more great success. Sit down with us and you’ll hear how a boy from the United Kingdom who felt he needed to change his accent to fit in ended up working with director Michael Mann five different times. This is one you don’t want to miss.

Taina Maldonado sits down with one the biggest advocates for equality in women's sports, World Champion Boxer Heather "The Heat" Hardy. She first made waves on the scene of amateur boxing in 2011-2012, winning every title you could win at 125lbs. Regionals, Metros, Nationals and Golden Gloves, along with a NE Kickboxing title. Hardy was ranked #1 in the USA at 125lbs. before turning professional August 4, 2012. After turning professional, Hardy racked up an impressive 15 straight wins and no losses at Super Bantamweight (122lbs.) including capturing a WBC and UBF International title. Hardy became the first female to be signed to a long term promotional contract by DiBella entertainment and the first female to box professionally on a boxing card ar The Barclays Center. Hardy was then known as “The First Lady of Brooklyn Boxing”. In August of 2016, on the night she captured the WBC Featherweight Title, Hardy/Vincent was aired on NBC Sports, and was the first female bout to be televised in over 20 years. In June of 2017, Hardy decided to try her hand at MMA and became the first athlete (male or female) to be co-promoted in two combat sports. She signed to Belabor and became an instant fan favorite when she won her pro debut at MSG by knockout. In 2018, Hardy fulfilled her dream of becoming a world champion where she defeated Shelly Vincent for a second time and was only the second female fight ever to be aired on HBO.

Ladies and Gentlemen, This might just be the most important interview that I've ever had. When I finally got to watching the Netflix documentary “Losers", it ripped my heart open because of the raw honesty of Michael Bentt. Michael's emotional courage shows in how he reveals his roller coaster journey from being in a household where fatherly love was conditional to his winning, the high of becoming Heavyweight Champion of the world to the deep abyss of losing the title going through extreme depression, a loss of identity and contemplation of taking his life. This former heavyweight boxing champion of the world has a story to tell with life lessons important for every parent, athlete, and coach. The pain he is willing to share is really his gift to us so that others don't repeat the same mistakes. As a complement to this interview, I ask that you watch the first episode of Losers and also read the article that Michael wrote many years ago called “The anatomy of a knockout”. Enjoy and I hope Michael's story disturbs you enough to make sure you are doing the right things, the right way, for the right reasons. As a parent or coach know that your job is to inspire, encourage but also be willing to check in with the athlete to make sure they are doing what they want to do. It's their journey not ours. Former WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker (27-2, 21 KOs) of New Zealand talks with Ring magazine writer Michael Montero about his viral social media videos during the COVID-19 lockdown, family life, the best he's faced in his boxing career and what's next.
Former WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee reached the top when he won the world crown against Matvey Korobov in Las Vegas. Lee's journey saw him go from Olympic heartbreak as Ireland's sole representative at the 2004 Games to big things in the USA. He was taken under the wing of Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward and became a star of the famous Kronk Gym in Detroit. He rose fast, but was stunned in a defeat to Bryan Vera that saw him question everything. He fought his way back. There were trials and tribulations. Here, he lets you into his uncertainty, while being behind the scenes at the Kronk and on the road in Klitschko training camps. Then came the big nights, wins against John Jackson, Craig McEwan, Korobov and more and he joined forces with one of Britain's leading trainers, Adam Booth. As the champion, he faced Peter Quillin before losing his crown to Billy Joe Saunders. Then came an acceptance that it was over. He began his new life as a trainer, working with the likes of Paddy Donovan and Jay Quigley and he was a key part of Tyson Fury's rematch win over Deontay Wilder.

Former WBO featherweight champion Colin McMillan could be forgiven for being sour. Just when he had the world at his feet, as the reigning champion, he lost his crown in his first defence when he suffered a dislocated shoulder. Things changed from that moment. But McMillan has retained his highly positive disposition and is one of boxing's good guys. He had a fascinating career, trying to forge his own path, working with the late author Jonathan Rendall as an advisor, being guided by Terry Marsh and then, afterwards, becoming an advisor to Audley Harrison. In his own fighting career, there were big nights against big names when he was being touted as the next big thing and then came the disappointment of the injury that curtailed his charge. There were battles with the powers that be, battles with himself and battles with his shoulder. This is an incredible story.

Former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli was one of the biggest British punchers of his era, if not of all time. The Swansea man was an integral part of the Enzo Calzaghe stable, a regular sparring partner of Joe Calzaghe but he had his own huge nights in the ring, against Wayne Braithwaite, Marcelo Fabian Dominguez, David Haye, Ola Afolabi, Denis Lebedev and Roy Jones. There were nearly contests with Johnny Nelson and others, too, and the popular Welshman is not ruling out one more fight, which would be his 50th. Candidly he talks about his battles in the ring and away from it, the trainers he boxed under, his fight to prove his innocence after failing a drug test, the loss of his father and much more in a truly compelling and insightful interview
