Bagged Salad Removed from Supermarkets after Making Consumers Sick

Bagged salad mixes sold at grocery stores were recalled after being possibly contaminated with infectious parasites. The affected products were distributed to 10 US states and sold at grocery chains Hy-Vee, Jewel-Osco, and ALDI. The mixes, which contained carrots, iceberg lettuce, and red cabbage, were produced by Fresh Express, a company that manufactures ready-to-eat salads. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 122 people got sick in July after eating one of the salads, and 19 were hospitalized. The CDC first reported the contamination in June when it confirmed 76 cases of cyclosporiasis, a mild illness caused by the parasite cyclospora. This parasite enters the body when contaminated food or water is ingested. Some symptoms of the illness, which may last for more than a month, include severe diarrhea and loss of weight and appetite. According to experts, the illness usually goes away on its own, but some immunocompromised people may need to be treated with prescribed antibiotics. The president of Fresh Express said that the company is working together with the Food and Drug Administration to determine the source of the outbreak. In the meantime, the CDC advises people who purchased the recalled salad mixes to throw away any leftovers even if they had not gotten sick after eating the products. If consumers are unsure whether the bagged salad mixes they bought are part of the recall, the CDC recommends disposing of them to be safe.

Ep. 89: Kevin Murphy, former CEO & President to Driscoll’s fresh berries Enterprises || On episode 89 we welcome Kevin Murphy, former CEO of California-based fresh berry company – Driscoll’s.  Murphy has 30 years of business and agriculture experience. Kevin joined Driscoll’s, the world leader in fresh berries with operations in over 20 countries, in 2007 and rose to President and CEO. Prior to Driscoll’s he was at Capurro Farms where he served for three years as President. For roughly 15 years, Kevin was with Fresh Express from its early inception to its acquisition. During that period he held various jobs that included heading up strategic planning, marketing and operations for the company. Most recently, Murphy has become an advocate for the farmers he spent three decades working arm in arm.  Since stepping down at Driscoll’s – Kevin has decided to take on the issue of undocumented workers in agriculture head on.  In a recent opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal, Murphy explained that American farmers desperately need immigration reform.  The editorial teased the readers with a subtitle – “will migrant workers produce our food here or somewhere else?”  What’s great about it – in this WSJ piece Murphy doesn’t lament over the problems.  Instead, he lays out a three step plan to reform immigration in this country beginning from our ground zero – the fields that produce what sustains us and our families everyday.   In our 50 minute conversation we go deep into Murphy’s three-step plan for immigration reform.  We discuss how that will impact the American farmer and consumer.  We learn how this approach in agriculture could very well be the proving grounds for a much grander solution for immigration reform for the 12 million undocumented immigrants in this country now, and the volumes more set to arrive in generations to come.  We learn how Kevin’s background as an immigrant to the US has offered him unique insight into the issues, and the solutions.  And, we hear how his formidable years dealing with apartheid in South Africa with his work throughout California agriculture has matriculated into him becoming a champion for the underrepresented and the marginalized.   Want to know what’s really going on with immigration in this country – then turn to your food.  Start to peel back the layers and get some of the backstory of where your sustenance is actually coming from and whose hands are getting dirty in the process.  Need a crash course on how to reassess this? Where to begin being part of a solution for the future – then TuneIn to our conversation with food system reformer Kevin Murphy.   www.SourcingMatters.show

Investigators say 18-year-old Zemarcuis Devon Scott wanted to fly to an out-of-state concert when he hopped inside an American Eagle jet at Texarkana Regional Airport. The Texarkana Gazette reports Scott was inside the cockpit when he was arrested early on July 4. He was charged Monday and remained jailed Thursday on commercial burglary and attempted theft of property charges. Envoy Air operates the plane. The company says the 44-seat jet wasn’t damaged. Miller County jail records don’t list an attorney for Scott, who lives in Texarkana. The 15 reporting states as of Aug. 2 are Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Montana, North Dakota, Kentucky, Virginia, Florida and Missouri. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 16 people have been hospitalized and those who reported illness range in age from 14 to 91 years old. The Connecticut, Tennessee and Virginia cases bought salads while traveling in Illinois, and the Florida case bought a salad while traveling in Kentucky. The outbreak was first reported in May. In July, the departments of public health in Illinois and Iowa were investigating some McDonald’s locations after people became ill after eating their salads. In July, more states reported an outbreak. At the time, McDonald’s said in a statement that it decided to voluntarily stop selling salads at affected restaurants in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Montana, North Dakota, Kentucky, Virginia and Missouri. The FDA said it completed an analysis of Fresh Express salad mix containing romaine lettuce and carrots, which had been distributed to McDonald’s, on July 26. Cyclospora was found in the sample and Fresh Express was informed. Symptoms of cyclospora infection include diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps/pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea and fatigue. The FDA recommends those who have symptoms contact their health provider.
