Welcome to the third installment of the Updates in Music Audiology workshop recap from the NHCA 2025 conference. This week we will help Sensaphonics celebrate their 40 year anniversary by featuring the voices of founder Michael Santucci and hearing clinic director Shannon Switzer. Together, they shared a brief history of in ear monitors, common fit and use issues, and recommendations for their safe and effective use. Their presentations have been edited slightly for the audio-only format.  Michael Santucci is a Doctor of Audiology and president of Sensaphonics, Inc., Chicago, IL. In 1985 he founded Sensaphonics which designs, develops and manufactures custom in‐ear products for the music industry as well as a variety of other hearing conservation applications. For over 40 years he has provided Audiological consultation and customized hearing protection strategies to both Chicago area musicians and many of today's most prolific music performers from all genres of music. Today, Dr. Santucci continues his hearing conservation efforts, spearheading the development of innovative new products and technologies that have 3 patents for the 3DME IEM system and the dB Check Pro sound level analyzer. Both products are NAMM tech award finalists. Dr. Santucci is the Chair of the Music Induced Hearing Loss Task Force for the National Hearing Conservation Association. Dr. Santucci is also a member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES), where he is Chair of the Technical Committee on Hearing and Hearing Loss Prevention. Shannon Switzer, Au.D. is the Director of the Sensaphonics Musicians' Hearing Clinic in Chicago and is a featured audiologist in the MusiCares x Tuned teleaudiology partnership. As a lifelong clarinetist herself, she became fascinated with hearing conservation for musicians while earning her Doctorate of Audiology at Northwestern University. She primarily provides direct patient care to over 1000 music industry professionals annually through a variety of channels; the Sensaphonics clinic, mobile visits at music venues in Chicago, onsite clinical residencies with orchestras around the country, and teleaudiology visits with musicians around the world. Dr. Switzer is passionate about promoting hearing health through public education. She lectures at conferences, gives interviews to various music media, and trains audiologists in music audiology best practices. She has recently joined the WHO's Make Listening Safe committee for safe listening in music venues and organizes high-profile musicians to promote World Hearing Day on their social media. They dissect the Technical Committee's report and highlight concerns about proposals such as no-targeting closures, which are inequitable and unenforceable. The team unpacks flawed assumptions driving management decisions, including projections based on data that fail to reflect the current state of the fishery. Kyle offers a guide's perspective on the impact of closures, emphasizing their potential to harm both the resource and local economies. The discussion also critiques the lack of fairness in management measures between states and the disproportionate burden placed on different areas and groups. As they rally listeners to take action, the team underscores the importance of advocating for balanced, science-based decisions to ensure a thriving future for striped bass.

There are seemingly different expectations about the role of the GNU technical committee by its two largest partners.  Deputy President Paul Mashatile will convene the inaugural meeting of the GNU's technical committee, which will be attended by the leaders of the 11 parties in the coalition arrangement in Cape Town on Thursday.  The Committee is aimed at acting as a so-called clearing house to deal with the issues facing the GNU on an ongoing basis. However, as Busi Chimombe reports, while the DA appears to view the forum primarily as a dispute resolution platform, the ANC is adamant that it will play a much broader role

Recorded before the highly successful MEPC81, Arsenio describes his vision for the IMO and his confidence in solutions that will reduce emissions from shipping without penalizing member states. --About SG Arsenio Dominguez:Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco is the tenth IMO Secretary-General, bringing with him more than three decades of experience serving the global maritime sector, across a spectrum of leadership roles of increasing scope and responsibility.Initially representing his native Panama, first within the Panama Maritime Authority and in his lattermost appointment as Ambassador of Panama to the IMO, his affinity for building consensus saw him elected by his peers as Chair of several flagship IMO intergovernmental meetings, including: the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), the Technical Committee of the 29th Assembly, and the Maritime Security, Piracy and Armed Robbery Group, as well as a number of Vice-Chair and Board member roles.A naval architect at heart and by training, Mr. Dominguez gained his first degree at Veracruzana University, Mexico. Recognizing from the outset of his career the importance of a multi-disciplinary and multi-sectorial approach to the maritime sector, Mr. Dominguez later went on to pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Hull, as well as an executive qualification in International Law and European Politics at Birkbeck University, both in the United Kingdom. This agile approach served him well in better understanding the priorities and navigating the needs of the different stakeholders across the maritime sector, and indeed the complexities of a specialized UN agency whose mission it is to support them. In 2017, Mr. Dominguez harnessed this extensive technical and diplomatic knowledge and experience as a delegate for the benefit of IMO. He joined the Organization, first as Chief of Staff, followed by Administrative Director - leading the Organization through the COVID-19 pandemic. Directly prior to his election in July 2023 as Secretary-General, he was the Director of the Marine Environment Division. His initial term as IMO Secretary-General was approved at the 33rd Assembly in December 2023.--About the IMO:The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. The IMO work supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).The main role of the IMO is to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted and universally implemented. Shipping is a truly international industry, and it can only operate effectively if the regulations and standards are themselves agreed, adopted and implemented on an international basis. IMO measures cover all aspects of international shipping – including ship design, construction, equipment, manning, operation and disposal – to ensure that this vital sector for remains safe, environmentally sound, energy efficient and secure.--Links:IMO: https://www.imo.org/

Dave Durante, former USA Gymnastics Olympic team member and co-owner of Power Monkey Fitness, talks about his journey from elite athlete to coach. He details the importance of consistency in movement of the body, and the value of smaller but consistent periods of activity each day. Dave shares tips on how cancer survivors can start to regain some of their strength and mobility back after treatments, and the importance of having support along the way to maintain consistency and achieve fitness goals. He also reminds us to prioritize the process and not the end result. Key Highlights: The importance of mental fitness to help improve physical fitness. Tips for cancer survivors to regain strength and mobility after treatment. The power of consistency and focusing on the process rather than the end result to achieve goals. About our guest: Dave Durante is a multiple time USA gymnastics national champion and a member of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Team as an alternate. Following his retirement from competition, Dave helped coach his alma mater, Stanford University, to an NCAA Team Title in 2009. He remained involved in the sport by serving on the Athlete Advisory Committee with the United States Olympic Committee and the USA Gymnastics Men's Technical Committee until 2018. From 2013-2015, Dave was a lead coach with the CrossFit Gymnastics L1 course, where he developed the CrossFit Gymnastics Advanced Course. Dave is now the co-owner of Power Monkey Fitness and Power Monkey Camp, which host adult fitness events worldwide. They also provide technical education in various training specialties through their social media platforms and their Power Monkey Training app. Key Moments: 12 minutes: On the importance of mental health to perform - Leading up to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, I just missed out on the Olympic team. I was part of the Olympic selection process team, one of the last ten guys. They took eight to Athens. I was one of the two that they didn't take to Athens. I did everything I could, and I was in the best shape of my life. I was so ready competitively, but I was mentally a mess. Everything that I'm doing well physically, the complete opposite is happening on the mental side. So I found a balance in my teammates and things outside of the sport. 36 minutes: How to ease back into exercise after cancer treatments - Start with bodyweight. Really phase one is about more mobility as we discussed, but also a stronger core. So those are two things that we recommend people doing on a daily basis. You should spend five to ten minutes on core work. You spend five to ten minutes on mobility work on a daily basis. 40 minutes: On the power of consistency - It's imperative on you to wake up every day and put a priority on how important these things are to you. It doesn't need to start massive. And I think that that's the thing that's really important with consistency. It can start as easy as I'm going to walk to the end of the block today and come back and just do that for this week. When we talk about consistency, it needs to start with something attainable, something small, one day at a time, and then allow it to grow from there.Visit the Manta Cares website Disclaimer: This podcast is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed. I've always said that the water treatment industry is the best industry in the world. The opportunities in the water industry are endless. If you work in the water treatment industry, you know that you'll be secure for the rest of your life. Businesses will always need water treaters, everyone will always need clean water. In today's episode, my lab partner is someone who's worked in the water treatment industry for 42 years: Jerry Angelili. Jerry started his career at Betz Laboratories, where he worked as a Sales Representative and Account Manager for 14 years. He then worked at three more companies before joining Chem-Aqua in 2007. He started as a Senior Engineer, responsible for technical assistance to the corporate sales force in selling and servicing prospects and customers in the area of boiler, cooling, and wastewater treatment applications. He would eventually become the Manager of Oxidative Technology, managing Chem-Aqua's existing and potential applications of chlorine dioxide ozone, and peracetic acid, and the Manager of Engineering until he retired in 2020. An expert in Chlorine Dioxide and its applications, Jerry holds two patents to his name: one for the portable water treatment system and apparatus (US 8211296) and another for the portable water treatment method (US 8226832), which were both issued on April 9, 2010. He was also a member of AWT, serving in the Technical Committee, specifically with boilers.  Jerry aspired to become a doctor when he was in college, majoring in Biology at the University of Pittsburgh. But lucky for us that Jerry decided to go into water treatment or we wouldn't have some of the technologies and industry knowledge we have today. Bottom line: Armed with 42 years of experience in water treatment, Jerry Angelili will share with us how we can embrace new technologies to make the entire water treatment industry better. What is the science behind the order? Where would you find the proper order when in doubt? Would there ever be a reason to install one out of the standard order? Take this week to think about the proper order of corrosion coupons and why it matters.    Quotes: “I provided Betz with assistance without being denigrating. I tried to lift people up, if they did something wrong, we worked through it.” - Jerry Angelili “Get through a year; whatever happens, don't quit.
