In this Omni Talk Retail Fast Five discussion, sponsored by the A&M Consumer and Retail Group, Simbe, Mirakl, Ocampo Capital, Infios, and ClearDemand, Chris and Anne explore Hy-Vee's decision to shutter most in-store bars and eliminate full-service dining in favor of counter-only service (0:02). Chris critiques the overuse of “experiential retail” as a vague, unscalable buzzword (1:00), calling Hy-Vee's move a necessary correction in an era where operational simplicity and consistency matter more than novelty. He shares a personal anecdote from his days at Gap about the hidden complexity of over-segmentation in retail (2:59) and warns about the challenges of managing stores with differing formats. Anne supports the shift as a logical step for maximizing floor space and profitability, citing successful models like Aldi and Sprouts that keep formats tightly controlled (4:50). The episode closes with a spirited debate on whether experiential retail ever really worked—and if retailers should let go of the fantasy altogether (7:40). What happens when you check your bank account and wonder where all the money went? Join me, Stephen Feith, on a journey through life's losses as we explore not just financial dilemmas but the deeper losses we all face. From lost pets to missing people, I reflect on how these universal experiences mirror God's longing for those who are far from him. Together, we traverse the Gospel of Luke, particularly the poignant teachings in chapter 15, where Jesus reshapes our understanding of purpose. We revisit the timeless parable of the prodigal son, unraveling its rich themes of grace, forgiveness, and restoration, and how they challenge our perceptions of divine love and human relationships.Reflect upon my own path in founding Madison Church, where the humble beginnings included working at a Hy-Vee grocery store in Springfield, Missouri. As Megan and I journeyed across the Midwest sharing our dream of a new church community, we met both skeptics and supporters. Those supporters have been pivotal in our growth over the last decade. Embrace the call to be a community that mirrors heaven's joy, extending grace and inclusivity to everyone, whether they're returning home or arriving for the first time. Let's build a church that actively seeks and celebrates those seeking belonging, just as the father did with his returning son.Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode, consider subscribing to Madison Church on your favorite podcast platform. The YSS Rooftop Gardens program is producing thousands of heads of lettuce, but its' more important export is the employability skills young adults need to change their lives. Started in 2024, the garden employs several groups of at-risk youth to grow hydroponic romaine lettuce which is then sold at farmers markets and select Hy-Vee stores. Hear from program founder Samanthya Marlatt as she disccuses how they use a combination of real world experience and classroom learning to teach these young adults about employability, and find out how they've already seen results after students graduate the program. Louisville is getting a new international grocery store — which got us talking about the market's needs on this week's Access Louisville podcast.LBF Reporter Joel Stinnett joins the show this week to tell us about Saraga International Grocery, which has signed a lease and will open its first area store at 200 N. Hurstbourne Parkway inside The Forum Center. This was formerly the site of Lucky's Market, which closed amid a company bankruptcy in 2020. This gets us talking about what we'd like to see in the grocery market in Louisville — a second Trader Joe's and more options inside the Watterson Expressway are on our wishlist. In other grocery news, Stinnett also tells us about the latest with Hy-Vee. In spite of delays, the Des Moines, Iowa-based grocery retailer says it is still planning to open a location in Kentucky. It initially announced plans to build in the Fern Creek area in 2021 but it has yet to happen.Bourbon and restaurant newsLater in the show, we discuss some bourbon industry news with LBF reporter Stephen P. Schmidt, including the auction of a distillery in Downtown Louisville. This auction includes aging bourbon, equipment as well as real estate and other assets. We also talk about a new downtown tasting room for Green River Distilling Co., which sounds different than some of the other tasting rooms you can find in that it'll have a more sports bar like atmosphere. Finally we wrap up the show with a bit of restaurant and bar news, including the news that Baxters 942 is losing its liquor license. And we discuss a new grab-and-go bar coming to Oxmoor Center that will allow customers to drink while they shop this holiday season. Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. It's available on popular podcast services, including Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
