He then talks about how the Houston Astros slow start will be pinned by the media and fans on new manager Joe Espada, but believes the Astros will revert back to its 2017-2023 form before too long. John then questions why MLB has not implemented the ball/ strike challenge system that has proven to be successful in Triple- A this season. John gives his respect to Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog before applauding him for having the balls to stick with his intention to rebuild the 1980's St. Louis Cardinals in spite of winning the 1982 World Series. He then wonders aloud whether the 1970's New York Mets would have had better fortune if they had hired Whitey instead of Yogi Berra in 1972 to replace the decreased legendary manager Gil Hodges.

February 27, 2011 — The “Duke of Flatbush”, Hall of Famer Duke Snider dies in Escondido, CA at age 84. Snider was a power-hitting centerfielder for the great Brooklyn Dodgers teams of the 1950s and is immortalized in Terry Cashman's song “Willie, Mickey and the Duke”. Snider was Brooklyn's entry into one of the most passionate debates in baseball history. New York sportswriter Red Smith once wrote, “(Duke) Snider, (Mickey) Mantle, and (Willie) Mays. You could get a fat lip in any saloon by starting an argument as to which was the best.” Sharing the big city spotlight with fellow future Hall of Fame centerfielders Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle, Snider was part of a magical period in New York baseball that saw a team from the nation's largest city win the World Series in nine out of the 10 seasons between 1949 and 1958. The Dodgers appeared in the Fall Classic five times during that time, winning their only championship in Brooklyn in 1955. Although the Dodger lineup also featured other outstanding performers such as Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, and Gil Hodges throughout much of the period, no one on the team wielded a more potent bat than Snider. And, even though the Brooklyn centerfielder usually came out third best in comparisons to Mays and Mantle, Snider hit more home runs during the 1950s (326) than any other player in baseball.Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner once noted, “I'd say Duke covers more ground, wastes less motion, and is more consistent than anyone since DiMaggio.” And Stan Musial named Snider, Willie Mays, and Hank Aaron as his all-time National League outfield. What could have been – after the failed playoff series in 1951 Snider later recalled, “I went to Walter O'Malley and told him I couldn't take the pressure. I told him I'd just as soon be traded. I told him I figured I could do the Dodgers no good.”

January 30, 1930 Sandy Amoros is born in Matanzas, CubaAt 20 he made the 1950 Central American and Caribbean Games, Amorós led Cuba to a Gold Medal with 6 home runs in 7 games. He then turned to America to turn pro, first playing for the New York Cubans in the Negro Leagues in 1950 and in the Dominican Republic during the summer of 1951, he will finally debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers August 22, 1952.He was a good hitter with a keen eye, not quite a regular he did play in over 100 games in both 1955 & 1956 & 1957 and posted a 902 OPS in 1956. He hit a career high in hrs in 1956, 16 and from 1954-1957 in Brooklyn he had some nice spilts including a 369 career OBP. LA wasn't as kind to Sandy. The defining moment of Amorós' career with the Brooklyn Dodgers was one of the memorable events in World Series history. It was the sixth inning of the decisive Game 7 of the 1955 World Series. The Dodgers had never won a World Series and were now trying to hold a 2–0 lead against their perennial rivals, the New York Yankees. The left-handed Amorós came into the game that inning as a defensive replacement, as the right-handed throwing Jim Gilliam moved from left field to second base in place of Don Zimmer. The first two batters in the inning reached base and Yogi Berra came to the plate. Berra, notorious for swinging at pitches outside the strike zone, hit an opposite-field shot toward the left field corner that looked to be a sure double, as the Brooklyn outfield had just shifted to the right. Amorós seemingly came out of nowhere, extended his gloved right hand to catch the ball and immediately skidded to a halt to avoid crashing into the fence near Yankee Stadium's 301 distance marker in the left field corner. He then threw to the relay man, shortstop Pee Wee Reese, who in turn threw to first baseman Gil Hodges, doubling Gil McDougald off first; Hank Bauer grounded out to end the inning.According to winning pitcher Johnny Podres: “As great a catch as Amoros made, his relay to Pee Wee [Reese] (to double up Gil McDougald) was even better.” When a reporter asked Amoros if he thought he would make the catch, he said, “I dunno. I just run like hell.”

Our friend, Gil Hodges, is releasing his new book this week and he's giving a sneak peek into "Choice".  "Choice is a constant in our lives; we always have it. The key is to recognize and embrace the power of choice. Every action, every decision, is a reflection of a choice we've made. When someone says they had no choice, it often means they felt limited by the consequences of other options. Yet, it remains their choice. Sometimes, our ingrained beliefs or 'programming' might sway our decisions, making it challenging to see alternatives. But remember, the power to choose differently always exists within us, even if it requires a bit more effort."   Join the Discord channel and get into the conversation! https://discord.gg/NDtG3bUEbT #Choice #BookRelease #SpiritualAwakening #Restoration #GilHodges #Journey #Christian #YHVH #Faith #Yeshuan #Yahweh #Podcast #Mystic #Spirituality #DeconstructingFaith Find more with Gil here: Book: $19.99 release date: Wednesday, October 18, 2023 https://www.kingdomequippingcenter.com/ Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@KingdomEquippingCenter Email: gil@kingdomequippingcenter.com Choice Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/993504821908727

August 31, 1990, the Houston Astros make one of their best trades ever, acquiring minor league infielder Jeff Bagwell from the Boston Red Sox for pitcher Larry Andersen. Refusing to part with Triple-A third baseman Scott Cooper to get Larry Andersen from the Astros for the stretch run, Red Sox general manager Lou Gorman trades the Eastern League's MVP Jeff Bagwell for the right-handed relief pitcher. The University of Hartford standout will go on to win the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 1991 and we will win the National League's MVP Award in 1994 and become one of the greatest players in Astros franchise history. Anderson was a key member of the Red Sox bullpen down the stretch and helped Boston capture the the AL East Title. What is also lost is the Red Sox had a future MVP themselves in Mo Vaughn at firstbase who became on of the top offensive players in team history. August 31, 1990, Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr. become the first father and son combination to play together in a major league game. The elder Griffey plays left field and bats second, while the younger Griffey bats third and plays center field. They each pick up one hit in four at-bats. August 31, 1950, Gil Hodges of the Brooklyn Dodgers ties a major league record by piling up 17 total bases in a game against the Boston Braves. Hodges hits four home runs and a single in leading the Dodgers to a 19-3 win at Ebbets Field.August 31, 1917, 22-year old Red Sox lefty Babe Ruth won his 20th game of the season, defeating the Athletics, 5-3. Ruth won 24 games that season, the second straight year he had reached the 20-win mark. Ruth posted a career 94-46 mark as a pitcher, but earned his fame as a slugger

The Mets traded David Robertson to the Marlins last night for a pair of teenagers, infielder Marco Vargas and catcher Ronald Hernandez. Both have joined the Mets' team in the Florida Complex League, and if we ever see them in the majors, fantastic.Vargas, the younger of the prospects acquired for the 38-year-old Robertson, was born on May 14, 2005. That day, the Alabama Crimson Tide played the Arkansas Razorbacks at home in Tuscaloosa. Robertson did not pitch, because he had given up a couple of runs in relief in a loss the night before. The following day, with Vargas now in the world, some 1,100 miles away in Chihuahua, Mexico, Robertson pitched another couple of innings, this time holding the Razorbacks scoreless to close out Alabama's second loss in the three-game series. If you get traded for someone who was born in between your college pitching appearances, you're doing something right, so congratulations and best of luck to Robertson the rest of the way. But he's not the oldest Met to be traded. The standard was initially set 60 years ago, when the Mets sent Gil Hodges, who'd just turned 39, to the Washington Senators for a suddenly-washed Jim Piersall. The Senators made Hodges their manager, Piersall was released in a couple of months, and the Mets eventually traded Bill Denehy and $100,000 to the Senators to get Hodges back to be their manager. That's probably the best trade the Mets ever made. The Hodges “record” lasted 30 years, until September 17, 1993, when the Mets sent the recently-turned-40 Frank Tanana to the Yankees for Kenny Greer, who struck ou two of the three batters he faced as a Met and recorded a win. Tanana went 0-2 in three starts for the Buck Showalter-managed Bronx Bombers. If the Mets trade Justin Verlander, he'll become the oldest player they've ever dealt… once again, 30 years after the last time this benchmark was set. 1951 seemed like the season it would all finally come together in Brooklyn. The Dodgers were led by Catcher Roy Campanella, First baseman Gil Hodges, Outfielder Duke Snider, and now second-baseman, Jackie Robinson. Through one-hundred sixteen games, Brooklyn had seventy wins. On August 11th the New York Giants trailed the Dodgers in the standings by thirteen games. Then, Giants manager Leo Durocher put coach Herman Franks in the Polo Grounds offices in the Giants' clubhouse beyond center field. His objective was to steal opposing catchers' signals. Franks used a telescope to relay signs through an electrical-buzzer system to the Giants' bullpen. From there, the signs would be flashed to the Giants' hitters. The Giants won thirty-seven of forty-four games down the stretch. It forced a tie with the Dodgers in the standings. A three game series was announced to decide the winner of the pennant. At Ebbets field in Game 1, Giants pitcher Jim Hearn out-dueled Dodgers starter Ralph Branca, and the Giants won three to one behind solo home runs from Andy Pafko, Bobby Thomson, and Monty Irvin. The second game, played at The Polo Grounds was a rout, but in favor of Brooklyn. Jackie Robinson had three hits, including a home run, and Dodgers starter Clem Labine went nine. October 3rd, 1951: Game three. The tight, tense affair was played before more than thirty-four thousand fans at the Polo Grounds. Brooklyn struck first when Jackie Robinson had an RBI single in the first inning. The Giants tied it in the seventh when Bobby Thomson hit a Sacrifice Fly. But the Dodgers struck right back, scoring three runs in the eighth. Jackie Robinson was once again in the middle of the action. With Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe dealing, the game seemed all, but over. Then in the bottom of the 9th, The Giants put back-to-back men on. Whitey Lockman doubled to center field to score two runs. It made the score four-to-three. The winning run came up to bat. Ralph Branca came in to relieve Newcombe. Bobby Thompson was the Giants batter. The Giants would face the Yankees in the World Series and the Dodgers would again have to wait until next year.

John spends this program giving his best wishes to the great College Basketball Coach Bob Knight before putting in his two cents when it comes to the off the court bull shit generated during the Women's NCAA Tournament Final Four. His message to those criticizing LSU's Angel Reese: Once you have been shown Caitlin Clark's antics and you still feel ill towards Reese, your racism is clearly showing. The next thing you are going to say is, "You have black friends." The overreaction to black male and female athletes is a sign there are still a lot of white men and women that do not like blacks. John then talks about the incident involving Los Angeles Angels infielder Anthony Rendon, the punishment that was handed out and questions whether there is any accountability out there for the fan that was involved in this. Can fans literally do whatever they want? John then reiterates his belief that at least two NFL teams will be franchising destroying mistakes when they select a quarterback in the top ten (10) in this month's draft. He also believes there is a college QB that will be selected later on in the draft that will be better than most of the first round choices. In today's "Saving Sports History," John talks about Byron Nelson, the Masters, Connie Mack, Hank Aaron, NC State, Wayne Gretzky, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Sheryl Swoops, Tris Speaker, Gil Hodges, Guy Chamberlin, Elmer Lach, and Whitey Skoog.
