#070: Regenerative Organic and GMO Labeling champion David Bronner talks about the ongoing fight farmers and food activists face against global chemical companies. David Bronner is an organic food and farming activist and the leader (Cosmic Engagement Officer) of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, a company founded by his grandfather. David is active in campaigns for fair trade, sustainable agriculture, animal rights, and played a key role in the mission to label GMOs. He has written a handful of articles for the Huffington Post:https://www.huffpost.com/entry/on-the-organic-trade-association_b_11306156 To watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/david-bronner-verifying-organic-supply-chains-epsiode-seventyThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000 Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

Food and Travel Nation Things That Make You Go HMMMMM On January 1, 2022, new food labeling laws go into effect that require genetically modified products (GMO) be labeled properly. Instead, the food industry stepped in to "help" the USDA/FDA write the rules and regulations. Instead of true GMO transparency (which is what we were promised) instead we'll see the watered down word "bionegineered" instead. And if that's not bad enough, the industry has crafted loopholes for itself that renders the whole thing pointless! I bet you're confused when you hear things like "GMO food is the science of the future." And then you turn around and hear "GMO food causes cancer." Can both people be right? The oversimplified answer is that GMO food is neither good nor bad. It depends on why the food is being genetically modified. And who is doing the modifying. I am going to attempt to do some splainin' today. There is an article put out by "nature" that defines some terms and explains why we might want to genetically modify plants and animals. That article can be found here. Could problems arise when corporations confuse product improvement with profit improvement? You bet. This article describes how canola oil (normally a healthy oil that is higher in polyunsaturated fatty acids) has now been modified to contain much more saturated fatty acids. It now resembles palm oil (an unhealthy oil), which was done to increase the stable shelf life of snack foods. Until now, there was no way of knowing what these food manufacturers had done. But help is on the way in the form of mandatory labeling for GMO foods. This Journal of nutrition article looks into the beneficial results of having the ability to add iron or vitamin A to a low nutrient, but inexpensive, staple like rice. As always, if you have any questions about this topic, or would be interested in hiring a nutritionist to improve your healthy eating habits, feel free to contact me on my website contact page.

Dr. Jon Herington is a political philosopher of applied ethics focusing mainly on the concept of risk within the fields of science, health, and technology. In today’s discussion we cover the definition of security and what it means to be food secure as well as why simply labeling food as containing genetically engineered ingredients may not actually be in the best interest of individual consumers. This interview was recorded in late 2018 before the USDA made a final ruling on the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Law. The standards have been set since, but we still feel that listeners will find this conversation interesting and useful. More information about labeling requirements can be found at: https://www.ams.usda.gov/rules-regulations/be For further reference to Dr. Herington’s work, you can check out his personal website: https://www.jherington.com/index.php

On July 29, 2016, Congress passed legislation that wipes out Vermont's GMO labeling law and replaces it with a much weaker federal law. Listen in this week as Dee explains the terms of the new law and what it means for you as a consumer.
James Comey’s testimony before the House Oversight Committee on the Hillary Clinton email scandal left us with more questions than answers. One thing is for sure, though: the Clinton Campaign should be worried. Then, Bernie Sanders called on the big banks to be broken up. Alexis Goldstein joins us to talk about how that process is, kind of, underway. We also chat about House Republicans’ efforts this week to stop recent regulations proposed to safeguard financial consumers. And later, we explain how Democrats are co-opting the GMO-labeling movement by supporting legislation that would hide GMO labeling behind complex digital codes. Oh, and at the end of the show, someone gets thrown in the garbage can.

Today's show was recorded July 1st, the first day that Vermont’s GMO labeling law went into effect. Just how big a win was this for the anti-GMO crowd, we ask our two commentators, Nathan Pearson and Laura Hercher. They have a surprisingly optimistic take, suggesting that the GMO labeling could become a positive marketing tool.
GMO labeling is a hot debate. Why can't we just know what's in our food?GMO labeling is a hot debate. Why can't we just know what's in our food? Our food system is fundamentally broken. A few companies dominate the market, prioritizing profits over people and our planet. Government policies put the interests of corporate agribusiness over the livelihoods of farm families. Farm workers toil in unsafe conditions for minimal wages. School children lack access to healthy foods, as do millions of Americans living in poverty. From rising childhood and adult obesity to issues of food safety, air and water pollution, worker's rights and global warming, our current food system is leading our nation to an unsustainable future.Food Democracy Now! is a grassroots community dedicated to building a sustainable food system that protects our natural environment, sustains farmers and nourishes families.Lisa Stokke, co-founder of Food Democracy Now!, joins Andrea and Lisa to share more about what the organization does, specifically the debate surrounding GMO labeling in the United States.
Vermont, Maine, and Connecticut have all adopted GMO labeling laws. So what does that mean for the rest of the country? And what can we take away from the fact that major food corporations like Campbell's and General Mills have agreed to institute nationwide labeling policies for their products? Get the scoop from one of the most influential people advocating for our right to know, Chairman of the Just Label It campaign. Guest: Gary Hirshberg, Chairman, Just Label It, Washington, D.C.
Sylvain Charlebois, Professor of Food Distribution and Policy at Dalhousie University, explained the benefits of mandatory labeling for genetically modified foods.
"NO WORRIES!" That's what Monsanto Chemical Company would have you believe about the GMO version of foods they are creating. According to community activist, Pam Gentry, the company artificially splices genes from some other organisms into food crops we eat. What could possibly go wrong? In addition to this reckless behavior, they are also insisting on GMO foods NOT having GMO labeling. As a food policy show, we would be remiss to not discuss one of the most hotly contested issues in the food space over the past year - GMO labeling. What has been going on at the state and federal level around GMO labeling regulations and what is at stake for industry as well as our broader food system? And why was this issue - compared with the myriad others in the "good food movement" - successful? Host Jenna Liut delves into these questions and more with guests Jenny Hopkinson, a food policy and agriculture reporter at POLITICO and POLITICO Pro; Colin O'Neil, Agriculture Policy Director at the Environmental Working Group; and Steve Armstrong, Chief Food Law Counsel at Campbell Soup Company.

http://healthyalternativestovaccines.com/?p=27 Zofia is a British born documentary film maker and human rights activist who has been living in Philadelphia since 2010. She is director of Neviah Films, a TV and film production company that introduces new perspectives into public debate to encourage action and inspire “agents of change”. While carrying out research for her latest film “Grow A Pear”, a feature length documentary that examines the effects of GMOs on human health and the environment, she became passionate about the issues facing our nation’s food supply. This quickly led her to the local food movement in Pennsylvania and to meeting Annmarie Cantrell and Karen Stark who had just formed GMO Free PA. This was the beginning of her work as a safe food advocate. GMO Free PA is a state-wide grassroots group whose mission is to publicize the newest research and information regarding the risks of genetically engineered foods, assist and educate consumers in selecting vendors and products that are GMO free, and advocate for legislation that requires mandatory GMO labeling in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Zofia is also co-founder of the non-profit organization Citizens for GMO Labeling, a national grassroots movement of mothers, fathers, farmers and citizens dedicated to ensuring our basic right of knowing what we’re feeding our families. Its mission is to raise public awareness across the U.S., engage grassroots activists and pass legislation calling for clear and immediate GMO labeling on the state and ultimately federal level. Zofia has become well recognized as an advocate for food justice issues and GMO labeling and is invited to speak at events on a regular basis. She lives with her husband, son and rescue cat in Wynnewood.

Secret deals between "big agra," Congress, and government officials threaten our health. Eat GMO foods and die! Maybe not immediately, but the damage mounts up, with inevitable consequences. This is demonstrated by feeding GMO to successive generations of rats. Surely we have a right to truthful labeling so the educated consumer can make informed choices. Tonight's featured guest is Zack Kaldveer, Assistant Media Director from the Organic Consumers Association. We will be discussing issues concerning organic products, truth in labeling (and the related political issues), genetically modified organisms (GMO), and the dangers of Roundup. You probably did not hear about the worldwide March Against Monsanto. What did you expect from the "mainstream media" anyway. Tune them in if you want propaganda. Tune in to Prime Directive Radio if you want the truth. Be sure to call in with your questions or opinions. This is your show. 310-807-5158 or 877-878-1431.
