This week's guest is just that person. Benjamin Olsen is the Head of Windows Responsible AI & Data Compliance at Microsoft, where he also pioneered their first AI & Ethics education programs. He's also an advisor for AI and Faith and has worked as co-chair of the World Economic Forum's Responsible Learning & Education program and member of their Responsible Development and Deployment of Technology steering committee; the former Responsible Innovation Lead at Meta; and a part of the IEEE's working group on Responsible AI. His online courses in Analytics, Data Science, and Responsible Technology have been taken by millions of students in more than 120 countries. But it's his writing at the intersection of religion, spirituality, technology, and human flourishing that caught my eye. I met Ben through Andrew Dunn of the School of Wise Innovation, where I was on the faculty for a course on Embodied Ethics in The Age of AI with Josh Schrei, and was immediately taken by the clarity and heart he brings to places I have always guessed were, frankly, soulless. Speaking with him gave me hope that maybe all this hype is actually the evidence of earnest and concerted effort — in some corners, anyway — to do the future right and not just big. The more diverse, the more they produce questions, the longer it takes to deliberate, but the better the outcomes."   "We need to take responsibility and intentionally co-create with AI to ensure diverse perspectives are debated, increasing initial friction to reduce asymmetries and improve capabilities and relevance."   "Digital trust is kind of key. If we want data, personal data, to work for everyone on the planet, and not just the usual suspects, we need to address digital trust and infrastructure."   "If you feel that your personal morals are being confronted by what you're being asked to do at work, now is the time to recognize that disalignment and seek a place where you can be fulfilled and work on meaningful things."   "I'm excited about shaping AI's future because we are the generations that get to shape it. The decisions we make now will determine where digital trust will be in the next hundred years."   “There is expertise in the everyday person. We don't necessarily reward financially or recognize that, but that tacit knowledge is invaluable.”   “If we take longer to deliberate around our AI systems in their specific use cases and context, bring in the various communities that will be affected before we start building them, and deploy them constantly incorporating that feedback, we'd have much better systems that would work for far more people.”   “If we all woke up a little bit more to the kind of power that we give away, then we could also realize the kind of power that we actually have if we decide to do something about it.”   “We have to be able to manage all this uncertainty on the individual level as a community.”   "If you feel that your personal morals are being confronted by what you're being asked to do at work, now is the time to recognize that disalignment and seek a place where you can be fulfilled and work on meaningful things."   "I'm excited about shaping AI's future because we are the generations that get to shape it. Welcome to episode #930 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #930. I've known Juliette Powell since she was a famed VJ on MusiquePlus - MuchMusic and I was a music journalist back in the mid-ninties. While we lost touch over the years, we reconnected when she published her book about social media in 2008, 33 Million People in the Room - How to Create, Influence, and Run a Successful Business with Social Networking, and more recently with her latest, The AI Dilemma - 7 Principles for Responsible Technology (co-authored with Art Kleiner). The balance between innovation and ethics with artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly crucial. Juliette, a seasoned consultant at the intersection of technology and business (wit her consultancy, KPI), addresses this challenge head-on in The AI Dilemma. The book is a roadmap for businesses and governments looking to harness AI's potential responsibly. Juliette delves into the pressing issues surrounding AI deployment and the imperative of upholding ethical standards. With her extensive background consulting for multinational companies and her research at Columbia University, Juliette brings a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective to the AI discourse. She explores the dual nature of AI - its capacity to drive unprecedented progress and its potential to perpetuate harm. She articulates the seven principles outlined in her book, which serve as guidelines for developing AI systems that support human flourishing while minimizing risks. These principles focus on rigorous risk assessment, transparency, data protection, bias reduction, accountability, organizational flexibility, and fostering an environment of psychological safety and creative friction. Juliette's insights are informed by real-world examples and her collaborations with institutions like Intel Labs and governmental bodies, which underscore the complexity of AI's impact across various sectors. Our discussion also touches on the broader social implications of AI, including the challenges posed by data ownership, the illusion of personalized experiences, and the global divide in data value. Juliette addresses the confusion surrounding the term 'AI' and the critical need for digital literacy to navigate its consequences effectively. We all know that AI presents significant challenges but it also offers remarkable opportunities for those willing to engage with it thoughtfully and ethically. Enjoy the conversation... The risks of even one modified microorganism persisting in Nature and inadvertently editing the fungal, bacterial and viral microbiomes on which life depend were found to be very high. The main challenge to regulation was Intellectual Property privacy, to protect military and trade value, while making public or independent risk assessment impossible. Governments had been lobbied, by the Pharmaceutical and Biotech Industry to grant exemptions from risk assessing genetically engineered organisms as invasive species. Environmental protection agencies were told to use old chemical contamination protocols instead, which do not take into account the spread of living organisms. Infant genetic engineering technologies, including CRISPR and micro-injection were promoted as natural and non-GMO.

The majority of Americans now understand that GMOs are unsafe, and the food industry is responding by removing them. His global bestseller, Seeds of Deception, ignited the anti-GMO movement by exposing industry and government lies about GMO safety. In the book Genetic Roulette, he organized the science behind GMO health risks in a unique, easy-to-digest format, prompting one reviewer to write, “Smith has to be the best science communicator alive today.” Over 25 years, Jeffrey gave 1,000 lectures and 1,000 interviews in 45 countries, trained 1,500 speakers, organized over 10,000 grassroots activists, and appeared in top news outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time Magazine, The Doctors, and The Dr. Oz Show. He introduced the science on GMOs to medical communities worldwide, inspiring thousands of practitioners to prescribe non-GMO and organic diets.  Many of them recommend his most recent documentary, Secret Ingredients, (co-directed with Amy Hart) which features emotional stories of families who recover from serious diseases after switching to organic food. In this episode, Jeffrey talks in front of a live audience about the true aftermath of spraying billions of pounds of Roundup on farm fields every year. Roundup as an herbicide: Chelates trace minerals Dismantles plant defenses Destroys beneficial microorganisms Promotes pathogenic organisms Glyphosate, the chief poison in Roundup, has many deleterious biological effects: Depletes important minerals As an antibiotic: disrupts gut bacteria -> Studies with chickens, cows and pigs show death of beneficial bacteria and overgrowth of pathogens in gut Blocks the Shikamate pathway Damages microvilli and suppresses digestive enzymes The most important thing you can do to avoid the probable damage from eatiing food laced with glyphosate is to eat organic.    The Institute for Responsible Technology is working to protect you & the World from GMOs (and while we're at it, Roundup®...)  To find out exactly how we do this and to subscribe to our newsletter visit https://www.responsibletechnology.org/ Watch our short film, "7 Reasons Why Gene Editing is Dangerous and Unpredictable" Watch the film: Secret Ingredients Watch "Don't Let the Gene Out of the Bottle" Get the book: "Seeds of Deception" IG @irtnogmos Facebook @responsibletechnology YouTube @TheInstituteforResponsibleTechinology Twitter @TheInstituteforResponsibleTechnology

This statement was directly above the assortment of non-GMO corn and above the assortment of GMO corn there was no sign at all.  This was all done by a pro-GMO group in Canada. This shows the length the biotech industry will go to in promoting their GMO products - publishing an article in a scientific journal that only presents part of the story. Now Jeffrey is also speaking up about the dangers of GMO 2.0, which is the subject of the documentary Don't Let the Gene Out of the Bottle, which is a 16-minute film, which happens to be at the website above. 6:26  GMO Foods.  Traditional GMO foods have a gene from another species transferred into that plant, but we now have have GMO 2.0, which utilizes the new gene editing tools to knock out genes or gut the genome in a place or two and hoping that when the thing gets reattached, it either adds what you want in or leaves out what you want and doesn't bring anything in extra that you don't want.  This involves a lot of wishful thinking and obviously a lot could go wrong.  Jeffrey has a six minute film at responsibletechnology.org/takeaction that discusses some of these dangers: Seven Reasons Why Gene Editing Is Dangerous and Unpredictable.  The biotech industry has been licking its wounds because the movement to limit and ban GMO foods has been successful at informing consumers, and doctors that it is not safe that we have been able to contain it to 12 genetically engineered food crops as opposed to Monsanto's stated goal by this time to have 100% of all commercial seeds genetically engineered and patented.  What's even scarier is that it used to take a long period of time and was expensive to genetically engineer foods, but now you can buy a gene editing kit from Amazon for a few thousand dollars and create your own GMO every day. 9:41  Monsanto convinced the White House that GMOs were safe and that GMOs were going to increase US exports and domination by the US in world food trade and they should be allowed on the market.  Monsanto were able to get a former attorney of theirs--Michael Taylor--into the FDA to create a pro GMO policy.       Jeffrey Smith is a global thought leader on the health dangers of genetically modified organisms for over 27 years. He has written 2 bestselling books, Seeds of Deception and Genetic Roulette, directed 5 documentaries, the most recent of which is Don't Let the Gene Out of the Bottle in 2023 and Secret Ingredients in 2018. Jeffrey has given thousands of lectures all around the world and has counseled world leaders on six continents.  He is the founder and CEO of the Institute of Responsible Technology and he is now sounding the alarm not only about about GMOs and glyphosate but about GMOs 2.0. Monsanto was about to genetically engineer the food supply of soy and corn grown in Iowa. However, hardly anyone knew about it. The scientist knew that the technology was dangerous and could have a dramatic effect on human health. Jeffrey realized the fraud that allowed it to be approved by the corrupt regulatory agencies captured based on the mythological lies by the biotech industry claiming safety. So, Jeffrey started writing books and making movies about the controversy. Based on the evidence he collected, Jeffrey was convinced that eating these foods was causing tremendous harm to the US population and around the world. Did you know that GMOs have nothing to offer when it comes to feeding the hungry world? GMOs do not increase average yields, and increasing yields is not necessarily the way to handle hunger. Currently, there's more food per person than at any time in human history. GMOs work against developing countries, destroys biodiversity and concentrates the power into the hands of corporations. Sadly, GMOs can devastate both the health of humans and animals. [19:50] What Is Happening To Humans When Pesticides Are Going Into Our Water Supply? One of the highest levels of Roundup is in the animal feeds. In addition to being patented as an herbicide, glyphosate was patented as an antibiotic. Glyphosate is a special type of antibiotic because it kills the beneficial bacteria in our gut, not the pathogens. So, it creates dangerous changes in our bodies. Roundup can be a cause of leaky gut, and all diseases come from a leaky gut. Glyphosate damages the sequence of the DNA and creates oxidative stress, linking it to cancer. There are also birth defects associated with it and changes in epigenetics. [37:55] How Do You Go About Finding Wine That Is Not Contaminated? Finding a wine that is not contaminated will be a heavy burden. Someone did a study on organic wines in California. All except one had traces of glyphosate. Why are there traces of glyphosate in most wines? Well, it's because the water supply is contaminated and because the air is contaminated. Most of the time, ‘organic' isn't good enough. Instead, you need to know that it is non-GMO verified. [43:00] The Terms We Want To Look For When We're Shopping For Products Even if the beef says ‘grass-fed,' it could be grain-finished. If they grain finish, it is probably corn, and that would contain GMOs. You want 100% grass-fed beef. Ideally, you want to call them and ask if the pastures contain any genetically engineered alfalfa. Remember, consumer demand drives the companies. We really want the 100% grass-fed people to say no genetically engineered alfalfa. [46:50] Jeffrey Gives His Thoughts On The Dirty Dozen and The Clean Fifteen For a long time, the clean fifteen included papaya and corn. However, those are two of the most genetically engineered crops. There was something they weren't telling people. Glyphosate is not tested as a residue by the US government. The US government doesn't test for glyphosate because they have been bought off. The government believed that glyphosate was so safe, it didn't need to be tested. They haven't been able to change their minds because of the corporate capture. Jeffrey recommends checking out Moms Across America: https://www.momsacrossamerica.com/ Also, he says to check out Responsible Technology: https://www.responsibletechnology.org/ [50:55] The Environmental Impact Glyphosate Is Having On Our World Learn more at Protect Nature Now: https://protectnaturenow.com/ On Protect Nature Now, there's a sixteen-minute video that you must check out. Jeffrey is exposing the shocking and potentially world-altering effects of genetic engineering microbes. A graduate student wanted to research a genetically engineered organism to get his Ph.D. So, he got permission to test this GMO microbe. He went into the lab one Saturday morning and was shocked to find that all of the wheat plants on his experimental batch had turned to slime. The sludge contained still active bacteria. The student discovered this two weeks before the people with the bacteria would release it outdoors to see how far it could spread. The microbiome, however, is far more complicated and essential than anyone ever thought. We didn't need a pandemic to know that they could travel around the world and mutate.
