There are calls for more discussion around genetic modification. An Institute of Economic Research report, commissioned by Organics Aotearoa New Zealand, reveals genetic modification could reduce the value of primary sector exports by up to $20 billion a year. It estimates GMO-free branding adds an extra 59% on the value of our exports. Organics NZ chief executive Tiffany Tompkins told Mike Hosking there's a range of opinion on the subject. She says the Government should slow down, open up the conversation and include farmers more proactively so we can understand the cost-benefit analysis. This week the government announced it is moving forward on overhauling restrictions on the use of gene editing and other genetic technologies in New Zealand - establishing a dedicated gene tech regulator before 2026. The law will be based on similar legislation in Australia - the Australian Gene Technology Act 2000 - while taking a ‘hybrid approach' to regulation with applications assessed under a risk framework.  With legislation expected to go through parliament by the end of 2024, it will remove regulatory hurdles that have been in place for the last 30 years on developing genetic technology beyond the lab. Producer Sofia spoke to Principal Scientist at Plant & Food Research and Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Auckland, Dr Andy Allan, about this announcement and whether he welcomes the change.

A biotech company say it's about time we reconsider gene modification's role in the country's scientific pursuits. National has promised to ease genetic modification regulations to help with solutions to environmental, agricultural, and health issues. BioTechNZ Executive Director Zahra Champion told Mike Hosking that past anti-GMO conversations caused industry to steer clear of the topic, out of fear of what consumers will say. The National Party wants to change current restrictions on genetic modifcation if it gets into government. But critics argue the restrictions are there for a reason. Spokesperson for GE Free New Zealand Jon Carapiet spoke to Corin Dann.

The president of the International Science Council says a policy to end New Zealand's restrictions on genetic modification would open up valuable opportunities for science. It follows the National Party saying it would drop restrictions if elected. Sir Peter Gluckman, a biomedical scientist, says such a policy is long overdue. He spoke to Corin Dann.

Lake trout are on life support in Lake Michigan. They rely on intense breeding and stocking by federal fisheries. There was a breakthrough last summer, though, that could help bolster the lake trout's recovery. A geneticist successfully mapped the lake trout genome: an outline of the fish's genetic makeup. The genome will help biologists understand why some “strains” of trout have a higher survival rate. But could it also be used to create a sort of super-trout? And is that a good thing?
