“You have to create this environment that the person's comfortable in, that's a big part of it. And I don't actually like to use the word interview, especially when I coach people or advise people who are starting podcasts. You don't ever want to use the word ‘interview' because interview implies question answer, question answer, question answer, whereas a conversation is a back and forth, it's people sharing ideas.”-- Joe Pardavila My next guest has produced over ten thousand hours of audio content over the course of his career in podcasting and terrestrial radio. He was a radio personality and producer on the legendary New York City radio station, 95.5 PLJ, where he was part of the iconic Scott & Todd in the Morning. He studied Sketch & Improv Comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade and was a founding member and actor in the New York-based sketch comedy group Clip Show. The group performed at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater and the People's Improv Theater, and their video sketches have been featured on Funny or Die and the Huffington Post. He's also the co-director, writer, and producer of the award-winning horror satire The Witches of Bushwick and currently serves as the director of podcasts for Advantage Media Group/ForbesBooks. His name is Joe Pardavila and, as you can probably tell, he's spent much of his life understanding good audio and good conversation. His book Good Listen talks about the secrets behind creating compelling conversations and powerful podcasts. Sounds like he'll fit right in here, so let's get to it! As always, if you have any questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. If you have questions for me, just visit http://www.audiobrandingpodcast.com/ (www.audiobrandingpodcast.com) where you'll find all sorts of ways to get in touch. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter (on the http://www.audiobrandingpodcast.com/ (www.audiobrandingpodcast.com) webpage) will let you know when the new podcasts are available. In Love with Radio As the interview starts, we talk about Joe's early memories of sound and how he used to stay up late at night as a child to secretly listen to sports news on the radio, "I would be in my bedroom underneath my blankets," he recalls, "listening to my little radio till 3 o'clock in the morning to see what the Mets had done." That radio under the blankets, he says, was a lifeline in the days before the internet and news on demand, and it changed the way he thought about sound, media, and particularly the power of radio. "That was sort of my connection," Joe says, "to the way I fell in love with radio." Opening Up the World Joe goes on to tell us how he came to work for WPLJ and Scott & Todd in the Morning, as a college internship turned into a surprise job offer. "I didn't have to think twice about it," he says. "I was like 'sure, who needs school?' And then that sort of opened my world up." He quickly progressed in his newfound career and, as he explains, "I ended up running the morning show by the time the morning show was blowing up in 2019." We talk about his mentors and how they influenced his career, and how a mentor can sometimes be just as valuable for the mistakes they teach you to avoid as the advice they offer. "One thing people don't realize about mentors and mentorship," he notes, "is it's not only the good things you can learn from your mentors. It's also the bad things." Good Listening Next, we talk about his foray into podcasting and writing his first book. "I was like 'I want to do podcasting,'" Joe reflects, "'but I don't want to do the same thing I'm doing on the air.'" His first podcast ended up being a collaboration with renowned sex researcher Zhana Vrangalova in part, he says, "because that's something I would never be able to discuss on the radio." Podcasting soon led him to an unexpected new creative venture, his new book Good Listen. “It turns out as I was...

This week we squeeze into the bath with Hayes Bradley, known musically as B. Hayes, to discuss his new ambient record “1-9”, his journey into his musical career, and the intimate moments in between it all. Growing up in the Palisades in Los Angeles with his mother and three brothers, music has always had an influence on his life. Hayes is the first in his lineage to actually work in music. He shares how this career path has been a series of trial and error for him, pushing him to consistently take creative risks. He has always explored the edges of music scenes from warehouse and noise parties in Chicago, to Berlin, New York, LA undergrounds. This exploration has led him to discover some of the world's most interesting groups of people and places, experiences that shaped his view on music culture. While touring with his dance music project American Dance Ghosts, he continues to explore real, raw underground scenes in each city. Hayes explores many genres within music through different experiences. But the heart and source of it always comes back to his family. There is a strong sense of family connection woven throughout his process, if even subconsciously, which he shines a light on throughout his many stories of home life. They range from collaborating with his brothers for spontaneous punk collaborations over the holidays to recording his sounds at his mother's piano, and inspiration from his mother's tape collection. For his latest musical creation, B. Hayes dives into the world of ambient music with the release of “1-9”. As he tells us in the conversion, this style of music has always been a personal listening practice for him until very recently. He used his need to emote a recent breakup as the jumping-off point to experiment with this genre himself. Listening and playing his own ambient music in a crowd of strangers in the desert at Secular Sabbath last May was a first. Trying an array of other sensory experiences at the ambient soundscape during our Joshua Tree Acres retreat event, Hayes broke out of his comfort zone. This allowed for new layers of creativity to flow and open-mindedness to develop. Delving into the world of his process as a young up-and-coming artist on the scene, we hope you take a moment to listen to his full album after the bath. But first, we hope you enjoy our discussion with Hayes about his personal music journey through the years and how “1-9” was born. Stream the whole album “1-9” now on Spotify. To join Secular Sabbath membership, you can find us at secular-sabbath.com/membership. Joining grants you access to our Inner Circle community of sensory-exploring like-minded people, where you can gather with us locally in LA for monthly meet-up experiences, and pop-up events around the globe, and partake in our exclusive ambient online community. 'The Freedom Flights' from Cuba to the United States took place between 1965 and 1973. The Cuban Government agreed to allow America to transport fleeing Cuban families, with relatives in the US, to Miami. In 1967, Maria, her brother and her parents were among the hundreds of thousands that fled to start a new life in America. Because the family was sponsored by a New Jersey business man, they settled there to begin their new life. Maria was 16-17 years old when she came to the United States and according to her son, "considers herself an American." Joe insists "my mother is old school and worked very hard through out her life. She went to school for as long as her family could pay for it and then went on to work in factories where she was treated terribly as an immigrant."Both of Joe's parent's families are originally from Spain, even though his mother had been living in Cuba. Joe's father, a ship mechanic and hard worker came to the US and met Maria. They married when Maria was 19 years old and started a family.Joe repeatedly mentions through out the interview that as a child and even today, "I never wanted to disappoint my mother." Both of his parents worked very hard to give Joe and his brother everything they wanted. All Maria asked of her boys was to treat others they way you want to be treated. "Mom encouraged us to do what ever made us happy" says Pardavila. "I'm very grateful for all those little life lessons that were taught to me, whether through osmosis or verbal. It king of stuck to me and it's a part of my life for life."Joe is the Director of Podcasts for Advantage Forbes Books as well as the host of the podcast "Uncertain Times, Survive And Thrive In Business." He's also written the book "Good Listen," where he shares his experience and background as a producer/talent for the 'Scott and Todd Morning Show' on WPLJ FM, one of New York City iconic radio shows for 2 decades. He came to understand that he had many "soft skills" he could share and apply with others regarding great communication tools, regardless of what medium you choose to apply them. The Freedom Flights were an unusual instance of cooperation between the US and Cuban governments. During the Camarioca boatlift in 1965, Castro opened up the Cuban port of Camarioca for the departure of Cubans with relatives in the US (excluding men of military age). The number of boats and fleeing Cubans was so great that the boatlift overwhelmed the US Coast Guard. In an effort to support refugees and quell chaos, the US agreed with Cuba to finance the Freedom Flights, which transported Cuban refugees with US relatives to Miami twice daily, five times per week between 1965 and 1973. The Freedom Flights would bring about 300,000 Cubans to the US and cost approximately twelve million dollars. Although Castro initially agreed to the program, Cubans who signed up faced harassment and humiliation before their departure and property confiscation after.
