Press play and discover the liberating power of evolved, mutually respectful parenthood. “You have to embrace autonomy. You have to recognize their need for independence and decision making, even if they make mistakes. Sometimes that is the best way for them to learn is to actually go through it. Failure is a crucial part of growth. So you want to encourage resilience. You want to encourage problem solving by allowing your child to face those challenges without immediately intervening. And also, you have to trust that the lessons that you've instilled in them over, you know, let's say 18 years will help to guide their actions in a good way.” ~Michael R. Y'all -- guess what! By the end of THIS YEAR, I'll be a published author! You may already know that I'm signed on with a speaking agency (Greek University) and through it, several other female speakers from the team are working together to co-author Greek University's newest book titled From Letters to Leaders: The Ladies Edition. And I've been able to write two chapters of the book! The process was a super cool experience because writing a book is something I can maaaaaybe see myself doing one day? Who knows! So it was definitely neat to be able to dip my toe in and get this experience. Now I won't give away too many details about the book's content, but I did get approval to share a little excerpt from one of my chapters titled "Can I Have It All? How to Balance Academics, Work, and Sorority Life." I chose this chapter because I knew I had a lot of experience to pull from, and insight to offer on the topic. And on this episode, I'm going to read part of the chapter to you! If you're into it, be sure to follow me on Instagram or sign up for my email list for more details on when the book is available for purchase. Meriwether, Jamie Devin Wilson, and Mike Ayalon with our listening audience for anyone who missed the live program. Welcome to episode #88 of Fraternity Foodie! I’m your host, Mike Ayalon, CEO of Greek University. Today we are talking health and fitness with Emily Coffman, host of Girls Gone Healthy Podcast. Emily came up with the idea for the podcast when she realized how many women like her were struggling when it came to working out, eating right, and feeling confident in their body. Our bodies are constantly changing and fluctuating and no one has taught us how to adapt to these changes. Instead they tell us to burn more calories and try the new latest diet. Emily is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, a Division 1 athlete at the University of Oklahoma and was living a very unhealthy lifestyle in college. She thought she was healthy because she was constantly active and could eat whatever she wanted without gaining weight. But truth is she didn’t know how to train without over working herself or how to fuel her body properly. We find out why she chose University of Oklahoma coming from Boston, what she learned being on the Women's Rowing Team, why she went Greek as an athlete, how to train without overworking yourself, how you can fuel your body properly, how to manage sugar in our diets, how to trust your body and ditch your scale, how to stay motivated in working out, how to replace negative thoughts with self-love, and Emily's favorite restaurant in Boston. We interview Greg Vogt, one of the newest speakers at Greek University. He has already been speaking for Active Minds, and now he’s looking forward to sharing his story with your fraternity and sorority students as well. In his raw and transformational speeches, Greg unfolds his journey from living a typical childhood to battling depression, suicide attempts, and spending a year in a mental health treatment center. A story of personal recovery and healing, Greg faces unexpected external obstacles when he experiences the tragic loss of his favorite high school teacher by suicide, and then of one of his best college friends in a car accident. Greg graduated from The University of Arizona in 2017 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and Entrepreneurship. During his time as a student, Greg spent nearly two and a half years writing and publishing a book. A self-help memoir, “The Battle Against Yourself,” was written with the mission to help students who are struggling to find hope, identity, and fulfillment. We talk about his time in a mental health treatment center, how he made the decision to attend the University of Arizona, why Kappa Alpha Order is so important to him, what he learned about himself by writing the book, his faith in God, the correlation between positive relationships and mental health, where students can go to get the mental health care they need, ways to reduce anxiety in college, 3 practical ways to help someone with a mental health need, and his favorite restaurants in Sacramento. Mel was born and raised in Middletown, New Jersey, a founding member of Alpha Omicron Pi at Ramapo College of New Jersey where she also went on to be Panhellenic Council President. She went on to earn a Master’s Degree from Monmouth University in Higher Education, then worked as a higher education professional, and then made the transition into a fraternity headquarters by working for Alpha Chi Rho as Director of Education and Programs. Mel loves cooking, baking, arts and crafts, and she’s a firm believer that all dogs are the best dogs. You're going to love Mel just as much as we do. We ask her why she chose Ramapo, what was special about being a founding member of Alpha Omicron Pi, what it was like being Panhellenic Council President, how Monmouth University was different from Ramapo, the best part of being a higher ed professional, what she does as Director of Education and Programs, what it's like being a female working for a men's fraternity, what chapters should be focusing on right now, success stories from Alpha Chi Rho, and we even got her to commit to her favorite restaurant in New Jersey.
